CHAPTER 1

CHAPTER 1

The Rabbit With Three Thorns

The room remained frozen long after the symbol appeared.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The small blue rabbit hung between Alessandro Moretti’s fingers, innocent-looking and worn from years of being carried by a child.

But the symbol hidden beneath the stitched ear was anything but innocent.

A black circle.

Three crooked thorns.

A mark that belonged to a name people in Milan had stopped saying out loud.

The Thorn Circle.

A family.

A bloodline.

A promise.

And, according to every record Alessandro had ever seen...

A dead one.

Emma looked between the adults.

She did not understand why everyone suddenly looked afraid.

To her, Mr. Bunny was still Mr. Bunny.

He had slept beside her every night.

He had traveled with her when she moved apartments.

He had been there when she cried because she missed her father.

He was not a symbol.

He was home.

"Mommy?"

Clara immediately pulled her daughter closer.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

But her voice was not convincing.

Alessandro noticed.

He noticed everything.

The way Clara's fingers tightened around Emma's shoulders.

The way her eyes avoided the rabbit.

The way fear appeared before confusion.

She knew something.

"Who gave her this rabbit?"

Alessandro asked again.

The entire corridor waited.

Clara swallowed.

"My husband."

"You said he died."

"He did."

Alessandro looked down at the symbol.

"People connected to the Thorn Circle don't simply disappear."

Clara's expression changed.

A flicker.

A memory.

Pain.

"How do you know that name?"

The question was quiet.

But it carried weight.

Because Clara Bennett was not supposed to know anything about the world Alessandro lived in.

She was a maid.

A woman who cleaned rooms, prepared meals, and avoided attention.

She was not someone who should recognize a forbidden symbol.

Alessandro stood.

The temperature of the room seemed to drop with him.

"Everyone leaves."

His eyes moved across the guests.

"Now."

No one argued.

Not because they respected the request.

Because they understood the command.

Within seconds, the corridor emptied.

The heads of powerful families disappeared behind expensive doors.

The guards followed.

Only Alessandro, Clara, and Emma remained.

Emma looked up at Alessandro.

"Are you angry?"

The question surprised him.

"No."

She tilted her head.

"You look angry."

Alessandro almost smiled.

Almost.

Children were dangerous in a way adults weren't.

They saw things people spent years hiding.

"I'm thinking."

"About Mr. Bunny?"

"Yes."

Emma held the rabbit tightly.

"He belongs to me."

Alessandro looked at her.

"I know."

"You can't take him."

Something in her voice changed.

Not fear.

Protection.

She was protecting the rabbit.

The way Clara protected her.

The way someone had once protected Alessandro.

A memory he had spent years burying.

"I won't take him."

Emma studied him.

"Promise?"

Alessandro had made many promises.

Most involved money.

Territory.

Contracts.

Death.

None involved a three-year-old girl holding a stuffed rabbit.

Yet somehow this felt more serious.

"I promise."

Emma nodded.

Satisfied.

Then she placed the rabbit into Clara's arms.

"Mommy knows."

Alessandro watched Clara carefully.

"Tell me."

She remained silent.

"Clara."

His voice softened slightly.

"I need the truth."

She looked toward Emma.

Then toward the closed doors.

Finally, she whispered:

"My husband's name was not Daniel Bennett."

The confession changed the room.

Alessandro didn't react immediately.

That was his skill.

He had learned long ago that showing surprise gave people power over you.

But inside...

Questions exploded.

"Then who was he?"

Clara's eyes filled.

"Daniel Romano."

Silence.

The name hit harder than expected.

Romano.

Not a small family.

Not an unknown man.

The Romano name had once controlled half of Northern Italy.

Until fifteen years ago.

Until the night the entire family vanished.

Alessandro remembered.

Everyone in his world remembered.

A massacre.

A betrayal.

A funeral with empty coffins.

The official story:

The Romano family had been destroyed.

"You married a Romano."

It wasn't a question.

Clara nodded.

"I didn't know at first."

"How could you not know?"

"Because he didn't want me to."

She looked down.

"Daniel wanted a normal life."

Alessandro almost laughed.

A normal life.

Men like Daniel Romano did not get normal lives.

Neither did Alessandro.

"When did he tell you?"

"The night Emma was born."

Alessandro looked at the child.

"Emma is three."

"Yes."

"Three years ago, the Romano name was supposed to be extinct."

Clara's face tightened.

"That's why he hid us."

"From whom?"

Her silence answered before she did.

"Everyone."

The wind outside struck the tall windows.

Somewhere in the mansion, a clock began to chime.

One.

Two.

Three.

Alessandro stared at Emma.

The child who had just stood between her mother and a woman twice her size.

The child carrying a symbol belonging to a dead empire.

The child whose father had apparently been alive under another name.

Something cold moved through him.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"Where is Daniel now?"

Clara looked away.

"He died."

"You said that before."

"It's true."

"How?"

Her hands trembled.

"He came home one night."

Emma was asleep upstairs.

Daniel looked different.

Like someone had finally caught him.

"He told me to leave."

"Leave?"

"He said people would come."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Clara's voice broke.

"He gave me Emma and the rabbit."

"He told me never to remove the stitching."

"Never let anyone see what was inside."

"Why?"

Clara looked directly at Alessandro.

"Because he said the only person who would understand the symbol..."

"...was the man he once saved."

Alessandro froze.

"What?"

"Daniel said his debt was not to money."

"He said it was to a person."

A pause.

"He said if everything went wrong..."

"Find Alessandro Moretti."

For the first time in years...

Alessandro Moretti had no immediate answer.

Because he remembered.

Fifteen years ago.

Before he became the man everyone feared.

Before the suits.

Before the empire.

Before the blood.

He was nineteen.

Young.

Reckless.

And surrounded by enemies.

One night, he had been trapped in a warehouse outside Milan.

Six men against him.

No escape.

Until another young man appeared.

A stranger.

A man with a scar over his eyebrow.

A man who fought beside him.

A man who disappeared before Alessandro could repay him.

Daniel Romano.

Alessandro slowly looked at Emma.

The girl's brown eyes watched him carefully.

"Your father saved my life."

Clara nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you find me?"

Her expression hardened with pain.

"I tried."

"And?"

"People were watching me."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Alessandro believed her.

That was the frightening part.

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A phone vibrating.

Not Clara's.

Not his.

The rabbit.

Emma gasped.

"Mr. Bunny is making noise."

Alessandro immediately took it.

The inside seam.

The hidden compartment.

There was something else.

A tiny device.

A tracking chip.

And beneath it...

A message.

Three words.

Written in black ink.

Alessandro read them.

And his blood turned cold.

THEY KNOW SHE EXISTS.

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then darkness filled the corridor.

Emma screamed.

Clara grabbed her.

Alessandro moved instantly.

His hand reached beneath his jacket.

The first rule of his world:

When the lights went out...

Someone was coming.

A gunshot exploded through the mansion.

Glass shattered.

Clara fell.

"Clara!"

Alessandro reached them.

She was alive.

But behind her, carved into the wooden wall, was a bullet hole.

And beside it...

A message.

Written with a knife.

Three words.

RETURN THE HEIR.

Emma clung to Alessandro's coat.

For the first time in her life...

She was not holding her mother's hand.

She was holding his.

Alessandro looked down at the child.

Then at the message.

The world had just changed.

Because the mafia families thought they were fighting over power.

They were wrong.

They were fighting over a little girl.

And Alessandro Moretti had just made the most dangerous promise of his life.

Nobody would touch her.

Nobody.

May you like

Not while he was alive.
