CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2
The Woman Who Lied About Death
The first thing Alessandro Moretti did after the attack was not call his men.
Not the police.
Not his lawyers.
Not the heads of the families waiting for an explanation.
He carried Emma upstairs.
Personally.
The sight alone unsettled everyone in Villa Moretti.
Because Alessandro Moretti was a man people feared from a distance.
A man who had ended negotiations with a single look.
A man who had built an empire by making sure nobody ever saw weakness.
And yet that night...
The most dangerous man in Milan was walking through his own mansion with a three-year-old girl asleep against his chest.
Emma's small hand remained wrapped around his shirt.
Even while sleeping.
Even after the gunshot.
Even after strangers had broken the safety of her world.
She held onto him like she had already decided something.
Like she trusted him.
Alessandro did not understand that.
Trust was not something he received.
It was something people pretended to give him until they needed something.
But this child...
She wanted nothing.
No money.
No protection.
No favor.
She only wanted to know that someone would stay.
Clara stood outside the bedroom door.
Watching.
"You don't have to do this."
Alessandro looked at her.
"Do what?"
"Protect us."
The answer came immediately.
"Yes, I do."
Clara shook her head.
"You don't even know us."
His expression hardened slightly.
"I know enough."
"You don't know what this will cost you."
A pause.
Then:
"I know exactly what it costs."
Because Alessandro had already lost people.
Too many.
His father.
His brother.
Friends who trusted the wrong people.
A woman he once loved who disappeared because standing beside him was too dangerous.
He knew the price of caring.
That was why he avoided it.
And now a little girl had walked into his life carrying a dead man's secret.
"Who was watching you, Clara?"
The question changed her expression.
She looked away.
"I don't know."
"You said that before."
"It's the truth."
Alessandro stepped closer.
"Everyone in my world has enemies."
"Your husband had enemies."
"Your daughter has enemies."
His voice lowered.
"And now I need to know why."
Clara looked through the bedroom window.
At the city lights.
At the world she had tried to escape.
"When Daniel died..."
Her voice became quiet.
"I thought the nightmare was over."
Three years earlier.
Before Villa Moretti.
Before Alessandro.
Before the symbol.
Clara remembered the night clearly.
Rain.
Too much rain.
The kind that made the entire world feel hidden.
Daniel arrived home after midnight.
But something was wrong.
He always smiled when he saw Emma.
Always.
No matter how tired.
No matter how afraid.
That night...
He didn't.
"Clara."
The way he said her name frightened her.
"What happened?"
Daniel locked the door.
Then checked every window.
Every corner.
Every shadow.
A man who had spent his life surviving knew when death was near.
"Take Emma."
She laughed nervously.
"What?"
"Take her and leave."
"Daniel, stop."
"No."
He grabbed her hands.
"For once, listen to me."
He showed her the rabbit.
Mr. Bunny.
The toy Emma loved more than anything.
"Never let anyone open this."
"Why?"
"Because inside is the only thing that proves the truth."
"What truth?"
Daniel looked toward their sleeping daughter.
"That she is alive."
Clara froze.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Because footsteps sounded outside.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming closer.
His face changed.
The fear in his eyes was not for himself.
It was for Emma.
"Daniel..."
He kissed his daughter's forehead.
Then Clara remembered his final words.
"If they find out she exists..."
"They will kill everyone who protects her."
The memory ended.
Clara wiped away a tear.
"I ran."
Alessandro remained silent.
"I changed my name."
"I moved."
"I tried to become invisible."
"But someone always knew."
Alessandro looked at her.
"You lied too."
Clara accepted that.
"Yes."
"To everyone."
"Yes."
"Even me."
Her eyes met his.
"I lied because every person who knew the truth about Daniel ended up dead."
That answer silenced him.
Because Alessandro understood fear.
Real fear.
Not fear of losing money.
Not fear of losing status.
Fear of losing someone you loved.
Downstairs, Luca Ferraro entered the office.
Alessandro's oldest friend.
And the only person in the world who spoke to him without fear.
"We found something."
Alessandro turned.
"Already?"
Luca placed a folder on the desk.
"The bullet."
"And?"
"Not random."
He opened the file.
"Old military-grade weapon."
"Professional shooter."
Alessandro's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Luca hesitated.
Then:
"The Romano family."
Silence.
Clara stopped breathing.
"No."
Luca looked at her.
"You recognize the name."
She looked terrified.
"They're dead."
Luca nodded.
"That's what everyone believed."
The folder contained photographs.
Old photographs.
One showed Daniel Romano.
Young.
Smiling.
Standing beside another man.
Alessandro picked it up.
His face changed.
Because he recognized the second person.
Himself.
The photograph was from fifteen years ago.
The night Daniel saved his life.
But something was different.
Something he had never noticed.
In Daniel's hand...
Was the same blue rabbit.
Alessandro looked at Clara.
"Emma's rabbit existed before she was born."
Clara's expression changed.
"I don't understand."
Neither did Alessandro.
And that was rare.
Then Luca placed another document on the table.
A birth certificate.
Alessandro read it.
His eyes moved slowly.
Then stopped.
"Impossible."
Clara stepped closer.
"What?"
Alessandro looked at her.
The words felt heavier than any weapon.
"Emma Bennett isn't Emma Bennett."
Clara went pale.
"What are you saying?"
He turned the paper toward her.
The original birth record.
The one hidden beneath years of false documents.
Child's Name: Emma Romano
Father: Daniel Romano
Mother: Clara Bennett
Clara stepped back.
"No."
Alessandro watched her carefully.
"You knew."
"I didn't."
"You didn't know her surname?"
Tears filled her eyes.
"Daniel changed everything after she was born."
"Why?"
Clara whispered:
"Because he said if anyone knew Emma carried the Romano bloodline..."
"She would never have a chance at a normal life."
Alessandro stared at the name.
Emma Romano.
The last living heir of a family believed destroyed.
The child every enemy would want.
The child someone had already tried to kill.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone in the room became still.
Alessandro answered.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then a man's voice came through.
Older.
Cold.
Familiar.
"Alessandro Moretti."
His grip tightened.
"Who is this?"
A quiet laugh.
"You protected the girl."
Alessandro's eyes darkened.
"Who are you?"
The voice answered:
"The man who watched Daniel Romano die."
Clara covered her mouth.
Alessandro stood.
"Where are you?"
Another laugh.
"Careful, Alessandro."
"You spent fifteen years believing Daniel was your friend."
A pause.
"Maybe you should ask yourself why he never told you the truth."
The call ended.
Everyone remained silent.
Luca looked at him.
"What did he say?"
Alessandro looked toward the stairs.
Toward the room where Emma slept.
Then toward Clara.
A woman who had lied about her husband's death.
A child who was not supposed to exist.
A secret that had survived fifteen years.
Finally, he answered:
"He said Daniel betrayed me."
But Alessandro Moretti had survived enough betrayals to know one thing.
The person accusing someone first...
Was often the person hiding the most.
And somewhere in Milan...
Someone was preparing to take Emma Romano.
The last heir.
The last witness.
May you like
The last piece of a war that had never truly ended.
