CHAPTER 12

CHAPTER 12
The Last Bullet
The photograph was only a piece of paper.
A few grams of ink.
Something most people would have thrown away.
But in Alessandro Morettiâs hand, it felt heavier than a weapon.
Because the photograph proved one thing.
The enemy had been inside.
Not outside the gates.
Not across the city.
Inside Villa Moretti.
Inside the place where Emma slept.
Inside the place Alessandro had promised would become her home.
The security room was silent.
Every screen showed the same thing.
The mansion.
Every entrance.
Every hallway.
Every person.
Luca stared at the photograph.
"Whoever took this had access."
Alessandro nodded.
"Yes."
"Which meansâ"
"Someone helped them."
Nobody wanted to say the next part.
Someone in the house.
The guards looked at each other.
The staff avoided eye contact.
Fear spread faster than any rumor.
Alessandro noticed.
And he hated it.
Not because he suspected them.
Because he knew what suspicion did.
It destroyed innocent people.
"Nobody leaves."
Everyone looked at him.
"Nobody is accused without proof."
A pause.
"We are not becoming the people we fought against."
Luca looked at him carefully.
Months ago, those words would have sounded impossible coming from Alessandro.
The old Alessandro would have locked every door.
Interrogated everyone.
Used fear.
The new Alessandro chose something harder.
Trust.
But trust was tested immediately.
At midnight, the power went out.
Every light in Villa Moretti disappeared.
The alarms failed.
The cameras went black.
Luca grabbed his weapon.
"Backup generator."
Alessandro was already moving.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because whoever did this knew exactly how to stop it."
He looked toward the stairs.
Emma's room.
They ran.
The hallway was dark.
Too dark.
"Emma!"
No answer.
Alessandro pushed open the door.
Empty.
His heart stopped.
The bed was untouched.
The window was closed.
The room looked normal.
Too normal.
Then he saw it.
Mr. Bunny.
Sitting on the pillow.
And beside it...
A single bullet.
Not a message.
Not a threat.
A warning.
Alessandro picked it up.
His face changed.
Luca saw.
"What?"
Alessandro turned.
"This isn't a random bullet."
The metal casing had a mark.
A small symbol.
Three thorns.
The Thorn Circle.
"No."
Luca whispered.
"Impossible."
Alessandro stared at the bullet.
Because he recognized it.
His father had kept one in his private collection.
A symbol from the old protection network.
"This was made before the war."
Luca frowned.
"Then who has it?"
Alessandro didn't answer.
Because the answer was already forming.
Someone older than Antonio.
Older than Isabella.
Someone who had been there from the beginning.
A sound came from behind them.
Clara.
She stood in the doorway.
Her face was pale.
"I know who it is."
Alessandro turned.
"What?"
She stepped inside slowly.
"I should have told you years ago."
The room became silent.
"Clara."
Her hands trembled.
"There was another person that night."
"What night?"
"The night Daniel died."
Alessandro felt cold.
"Who?"
Clara looked at the bullet.
Then whispered:
"Your mother."
The words were impossible.
"My mother died when I was sixteen."
"I know."
"She wasn't involved."
Clara looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"I thought that too."
The memory came back.
The night Daniel disappeared.
The fear.
The confusion.
The lies.
"Tell me."
Clara sat down.
"I met Daniel because of your mother."
Alessandro froze.
"She was the one who helped us escape."
"What?"
"She knew Lorenzo wanted to protect Daniel."
"She knew Antonio was dangerous."
"Then why didn't she tell me?"
Clara looked down.
"Because she was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of someone inside the Moretti family."
A pause.
"Someone who had more power than Lorenzo."
Alessandro's mind raced.
"My mother..."
Clara nodded.
"She discovered the truth."
"Which was?"
Clara looked toward Emma's room.
"Emma was never the target."
A silence.
"The target was the person who could protect her."
Alessandro understood.
Lorenzo.
Daniel.
His mother.
Everyone who stood between Emma and whoever wanted control.
"They weren't trying to kill a child."
Clara whispered.
"They were trying to erase everyone who knew the truth."
Before Alessandro could respond...
The security alarm returned.
One camera came online.
Only one.
The screen showed the front gate.
A figure standing outside.
A woman.
Older.
Wearing a black coat.
Alessandro stepped closer.
His breath stopped.
Because he knew her.
Not personally.
But from photographs.
From memories.
From stories.
His mother.
Except she was supposed to be dead.
Luca whispered:
"Alessandro..."
The woman lifted her face toward the camera.
Then spoke.
The audio system activated.
"Hello, my son."
Nobody moved.
Alessandro stared.
Unable to understand.
His whole life had been built on one truth.
His mother was gone.
But now...
The dead woman was standing at his gate.
"Open the door."
Her voice echoed through the mansion.
Clara stepped back.
"She can't be here."
Alessandro looked at the screen.
His emotions collided.
Anger.
Confusion.
Pain.
"Why?"
Luca asked.
"Why would she come now?"
Alessandro didn't answer.
Because the answer was terrifying.
She had not come because she missed him.
She had come because the enemy was finally revealed.
The woman smiled at the camera.
"I know you have questions."
A pause.
"And I know you hate me."
The smile disappeared.
"But if you want Emma to survive..."
Everyone froze.
"You need to let me in."
The message ended.
Five minutes later, the gates opened.
The woman entered Villa Moretti.
The woman Alessandro had mourned for half his life.
His mother.
And the first words she said when she saw him were not an apology.
Not an explanation.
Not a greeting.
They were:
"I am sorry, Alessandro."
A pause.
"I was the one who pulled the trigger."
The world stopped.
Alessandro stared at her.
"The trigger?"
His voice was barely recognizable.
She looked at Emma's room.
"The last bullet."
And suddenly, Alessandro understood.
The bullet left in Emma's room was not a threat.
May you like
It was a confession.
