CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5
The Daughter He Never Knew
Alessandro Moretti had spent his entire life learning how to recognize danger.
A strange car parked outside his office.
A delayed phone call.
A man who smiled too much during negotiations.
A woman who asked questions she had no reason to ask.
Danger had a language.
And Alessandro spoke it fluently.
But there was one thing he had never learned how to recognize.
A child needing him.
For three nights after the woman entered Emma's room, Alessandro barely left her side.
The security team complained.
Luca complained.
Even Clara complained.
But nobody could convince him to change his mind.
"You need rest."
Clara stood in the doorway of Emma's bedroom.
Alessandro sat beside the sleeping child.
"I'll rest when this is over."
Clara looked at him.
"It will never be over."
The words surprised him.
She continued softly:
"Not completely."
Alessandro looked down.
Emma slept peacefully.
Completely unaware that adults were fighting over secrets connected to her blood.
"I don't know how to do this."
Clara stepped closer.
"Do what?"
His voice was barely audible.
"Be someone's father."
The honesty caught her off guard.
This was not the Alessandro Moretti everyone knew.
This was a man admitting fear.
A man who could face armed enemies without hesitation...
But didn't know what to do when a little girl called him important.
"You don't have to become her father overnight."
Alessandro looked at her.
"Then what do I become?"
Clara smiled sadly.
"Someone who stays."
Those words followed him.
Because staying had always been the one thing Alessandro was worst at.
The next morning, Emma found him in the garden.
She was wearing a small pink coat and carrying Mr. Bunny.
"You're awake early."
Alessandro looked at the clock.
"It is seven."
Emma nodded.
"That's early."
He almost smiled.
"For adults."
"For children too."
She walked beside him.
Then suddenly stopped.
"Can I ask something?"
"Yes."
"Are you my daddy?"
The question was simple.
But Alessandro felt like someone had fired a bullet.
Not because he didn't know the answer.
Because he didn't know how to answer.
"No."
Emma's face changed slightly.
Not sadness.
Confusion.
"But Daddy said..."
She looked down.
"He said if something happened, I should find you."
Alessandro crouched.
"Your father was my friend."
"Was he?"
"Yes."
"Then why did he leave?"
The question hurt.
Because Alessandro didn't have an answer.
"I don't know."
Emma looked at him.
"Adults say they know everything."
He blinked.
"Who told you that?"
"Mommy."
A small pause.
"She says adults just say things when they don't want children to worry."
Alessandro almost laughed.
Almost.
The child was terrifyingly observant.
"I knew your father."
Emma sat on the grass.
"Tell me."
So he did.
For the first time in fifteen years...
Alessandro talked about Daniel Romano.
Not the criminal.
Not the heir.
Not the legend.
The man.
"He was stubborn."
Emma smiled.
"Like me?"
Alessandro looked at her.
"Exactly like you."
"He hated losing."
"Me too."
"He laughed loudly."
"I laugh loudly."
"No."
Emma looked offended.
"I do."
"You don't."
She crossed her arms.
"I can."
And she attempted the loudest laugh she could.
Alessandro failed.
He laughed.
Actually laughed.
From the balcony above, Clara watched.
And for the first time since Daniel died...
She saw Emma laugh with another man.
It hurt.
But not because she was losing her daughter.
Because she realized Emma had been missing something.
A person who reminded her of her father.
Later that day, Luca arrived with information.
Not good information.
Never good information.
"We found Daniel's old files."
Alessandro looked up.
"And?"
Luca placed them on the table.
"Daniel wasn't just hiding from enemies."
"What was he doing?"
"Protecting someone."
Alessandro opened the file.
Inside were reports.
Names.
Payments.
Photographs.
One name appeared repeatedly.
The Viper Group.
A criminal organization that operated across Europe.
Older than the Moretti family.
More ruthless.
More patient.
"They wanted Daniel?"
Luca shook his head.
"No."
A pause.
"They wanted Emma."
Alessandro's expression darkened.
"Why?"
Luca looked uncomfortable.
"Because of her mother."
Alessandro looked at Clara.
She had entered silently.
"What about me?"
Luca turned the document.
There was another file.
One that had been sealed.
Alessandro opened it.
The contents made him freeze.
A photograph.
A young woman.
Clara.
But much younger.
Standing beside Daniel.
And beside them...
A man Alessandro recognized.
His own father.
Clara went pale.
"No."
Alessandro looked at her.
"You knew my father."
The room became silent.
"I didn't know who he was."
"When?"
"Before I met you."
"How?"
Clara's voice trembled.
"Daniel introduced us."
Alessandro stared.
Everything he believed was shifting.
"My father knew Daniel?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
But Luca spoke.
"We found a letter."
The letter was old.
The handwriting belonged to Alessandro's father.
He opened it carefully.
The message was short.
Daniel,
If they ever find the child, protect her.
She is not only Romano blood.
She carries the last piece of a promise we made years ago.
Moretti owes Romano a life.
Never let the world collect that debt.
Alessandro read it twice.
Then again.
A debt.
A promise.
A child.
His father had known.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
Nobody answered.
Because there was only one possibility.
His father had hidden Emma's existence from him.
Just like everyone else.
That evening, Alessandro confronted Clara.
Not angrily.
That would have been easier.
He was hurt.
"How much did you know?"
Clara looked at him.
"About what?"
"My father."
She went silent.
"I knew he helped Daniel."
"And you didn't tell me."
"I didn't know you were Alessandro Moretti."
The answer stopped him.
"What?"
"When Daniel brought me to meet him, you weren't there."
"He told me one day I would meet the man who saved his life."
A pause.
"But I never knew that man was you."
Alessandro looked away.
For years, he had believed Daniel's disappearance was a tragedy.
Now he wondered if it had been a sacrifice.
That night, Emma had another nightmare.
She woke screaming.
Alessandro reached her before anyone else.
"Emma."
She grabbed his hand.
"Don't go."
The words were automatic.
Like she had said them before.
"I won't."
"You promise?"
He looked at her.
And remembered every promise in his life that had been broken.
Then he answered:
"Yes."
The next morning, something unexpected happened.
Emma drew a picture.
She gave it to Alessandro.
Four people.
Clara.
Emma.
Alessandro.
And Daniel.
Alessandro stared.
"You drew your father."
Emma nodded.
"He said you would find us."
A pause.
Then:
"He said you would be my family."
Alessandro couldn't speak.
Because Daniel Romano...
The man who had saved his life.
The man who had trusted him with his greatest secret.
Had known something Alessandro never understood.
That sometimes family was not created by blood.
Sometimes it was created by a promise.
But before Alessandro could respond...
The security alarm exploded.
Luca's voice came through the communication system.
"Alessandro."
Something in his tone was wrong.
"What happened?"
A pause.
Then:
"We found the person who helped the woman enter the villa."
Alessandro stood.
"Who?"
The answer came.
And the world stopped.
"It was someone from your inner circle."
Alessandro looked at Emma.
Then at Clara.
Because the enemy inside Villa Moretti...
Was someone he trusted.
Someone who knew everything.
May you like
Someone close enough to destroy them all.
