Chapter 1 – The Flash Drive

Chapter 1 – The Flash Drive

The ballroom had never been so quiet.

Only minutes earlier, it had echoed with laughter, clinking champagne glasses, and the polished music of a string quartet. Crystal chandeliers bathed hundreds of guests in warm golden light while cameras flashed to capture what everyone believed would become the society wedding of the year.

Now the music had stopped.

The silence felt heavier than stone.

Every pair of eyes remained fixed on one man.

Daniel Carter.

He stood near the open elevator shaft at the end of the grand hallway, his expensive tuxedo stained with sweat, his chest rising and falling in uneven breaths. One hand gripped the recording tablet he had stolen from security. The other disappeared into the inside pocket of his jacket.

Security officers spread out cautiously.

"No sudden movements," one of them ordered.

Daniel laughed.

It wasn't the laugh of a frightened man.

It was calm.

Confident.

Almost amused.

Emily Carter stared at him from the opposite end of the corridor, unable to recognize the husband she had loved for four years.

Minutes ago she had learned that he hadn't merely watched while his family humiliated her.

He had planned every second of it.

Every accusation.

Every insult.

Every tear.

She instinctively placed both hands over the gentle curve of her pregnant stomach.

The tiny life inside her was barely three months old.

She hadn't even announced the pregnancy to everyone yet.

Tonight had been supposed to be a celebration.

Instead, it had become the worst day of her life.

Daniel slowly pulled a small black object from his jacket.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Several guests instinctively stepped backward.

One security officer reached toward his holster before realizing the object wasn't a weapon.

It was a flash drive.

No larger than a thumb.

Daniel held it between two fingers as though it were the most valuable thing in the world.

His eyes found Emily.

There wasn't an ounce of guilt in them.

Only satisfaction.

"I told you once," he said quietly, "that trust is the most expensive thing a person can own."

Emily's voice trembled.

"What is that?"

"The reason no one here will ever sleep peacefully again."

The groom's father frowned.

"What nonsense are you talking about?"

Daniel ignored him.

Instead, he lifted the flash drive higher.

"This little piece of metal contains enough secrets to destroy families... companies... political careers..."

He smiled.

"...and marriages."

A murmur spread through the guests.

Someone whispered that he was bluffing.

Someone else whispered that he wasn't.

The bride, Victoria, felt the color drain from her face.

The bridesmaid beside her suddenly looked ready to faint.

Emily noticed.

She noticed everything now.

Every nervous glance.

Every shaking hand.

Every expression she had ignored before because she had believed the people around her loved her.

Security continued moving closer.

"Put it down," the lead officer warned.

Daniel shook his head.

"You think you've won."

He laughed again.

"You've only discovered the first layer."

Emily's heartbeat accelerated.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked directly at her.

"Ask your father."

Emily froze.

"My father?"

"You still think he built his fortune honestly?"

Her breathing stopped.

"My father died eight years ago."

Daniel tilted his head.

"Did he?"

The words struck harder than a slap.

Emily felt the hallway spinning.

"What are you talking about?"

Daniel smiled without answering.

Security was only a few feet away now.

One more step.

Then another.

Daniel's fingers tightened around the flash drive.

"If anyone touches me..."

He raised the tiny device.

"...this disappears forever."

The lead officer hesitated.

The guests exchanged anxious looks.

Even those who despised Daniel suddenly realized he possessed something powerful enough to make trained professionals stop moving.

Emily forced herself forward.

Every step felt impossible.

Her wedding heels clicked against the marble floor.

The sound echoed through the hallway.

She stopped only a few feet away from him.

"Why?" she whispered.

He looked almost disappointed.

"You're asking the wrong question."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I loved you."

"I know."

"I trusted you."

"I know."

"I was carrying your child."

For the first time...

His expression changed.

Only for half a second.

A tiny crack appeared in the mask he had worn all evening.

Then it vanished.

"Exactly."

Emily stared.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you were useful."

The words shattered something inside her.

Useful.

Not loved.

Not cherished.

Useful.

Every memory flashed before her eyes.

Their first date.

Their honeymoon.

Late-night conversations.

Birthday surprises.

The day he cried while asking her to marry him.

Every beautiful memory suddenly looked fake.

Manufactured.

Designed.

She realized she couldn't remember a single major financial decision she had made without Daniel standing beside her.

He had always insisted on helping.

Helping with taxes.

Helping with investments.

Helping with paperwork.

Helping with lawyers.

Helping.

Helping.

Helping.

Until she no longer controlled anything herself.

Her knees nearly gave way.

An older woman in the crowd caught her arm before she could fall.

Daniel watched without emotion.

"You know what your biggest mistake was?"

Emily remained silent.

"You believed kindness makes people safe."

Another security officer quietly circled behind him.

Daniel noticed immediately.

"I wouldn't."

The officer froze.

Daniel smiled.

"I've always been observant."

Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

"This has gone far enough."

Daniel turned toward her.

"You should stay quiet."

Her face paled.

"You've already said too much."

Emily looked between them.

"You knew?"

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The silence answered the question.

Emily felt another betrayal settle over her.

The bride...

Had known.

Perhaps not everything.

But enough.

Daniel chuckled.

"Look around."

Everyone did.

Half the guests refused to meet anyone else's eyes.

Several businessmen quietly slipped their phones into their pockets.

One lawyer attempted to leave.

Security stopped him.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Daniel noticed the reaction.

"Oh, now they're nervous."

He lifted the flash drive slightly.

"You all recognize this."

Emily frowned.

"Recognize it?"

"This isn't the only copy."

A wave of panic swept through the room.

The groom's mother grabbed the arm of her husband.

"What is he talking about?"

Daniel answered before anyone else could.

"Insurance."

He smiled.

"When you work with dangerous people..."

His eyes scanned the room.

"...you never keep only one copy."

Emily's heart pounded.

Dangerous people?

Who exactly had she married?

The lead detective finally arrived, pushing through the crowd.

He was a tall man with silver hair and sharp blue eyes.

Everyone instinctively made room.

He looked first at Emily.

Then at Daniel.

Finally at the flash drive.

"I'm Detective Marcus Hayes."

Daniel nodded.

"I know who you are."

"I'm sure you do."

The detective folded his arms.

"Give me the drive."

"No."

"You don't have many options."

Daniel smiled.

"I have exactly one."

"And what's that?"

"Negotiation."

The detective remained silent.

Daniel continued.

"I walk out of here alive."

"No."

"I receive immunity."

"No."

"My evidence goes public if I'm arrested."

The detective's expression never changed.

"You assume you're the only one who's prepared."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Without warning, another security officer entered the hallway carrying a laptop.

He whispered something into Detective Hayes' ear.

The detective nodded once.

Then looked at Daniel.

"We found your apartment."

Daniel's smile faded slightly.

"We also found your storage unit."

A flicker of uncertainty crossed Daniel's face.

"And?"

"We're still searching."

Daniel forced another smile.

"You won't find anything."

The detective studied him carefully.

"Maybe."

Then he added one sentence.

"We already found the second flash drive."

The hallway became perfectly still.

Daniel didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't breathe.

Emily saw it.

The confidence...

Was gone.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

The detective had lied.

She realized it instantly.

He hadn't said they recovered it.

He had simply watched Daniel's reaction.

And Daniel had reacted.

The detective smiled ever so slightly.

"Thank you."

Daniel understood too late.

"You..."

"You just confirmed there is another copy."

Daniel cursed under his breath.

Emily watched the realization spread across his face.

For the first time that night...

He had made a mistake.

A small one.

But real.

The detective took one slow step forward.

"So now we know we're looking for two."

Daniel's breathing became heavier.

The hallway suddenly felt much smaller.

The walls seemed to close around him.

He looked toward the emergency exit.

Blocked.

Toward the ballroom.

Blocked.

Toward the elevator.

Out of service.

His escape routes had disappeared.

Yet...

Instead of surrendering...

He laughed.

Louder than before.

Almost hysterically.

"You still don't understand."

Detective Hayes narrowed his eyes.

"What don't we understand?"

Daniel looked directly at Emily one last time.

"You think this story started tonight."

His smile slowly returned.

"It started four years ago..."

He tightened his grip on the flash drive.

"...the day I married you."

Emily's blood turned cold.

Before anyone could react...

A cell phone rang.

Not Daniel's.

Not Emily's.

Detective Hayes reached into his pocket.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Only three words were spoken from the other end.

His face changed instantly.

"What?"

The ballroom waited.

The detective slowly lowered the phone.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"The evidence vault..."

He looked at Daniel.

"...has been emptied."

Daniel smiled.

Not with relief.

With victory.

"Like I said..."

He raised the flash drive between his fingers.

May you like

"...you've only discovered the first layer."
