Chapter 3 – The Hidden Pregnancy

Chapter 3 – The Hidden Pregnancy

The room fell into stunned silence.

Detective Marcus Hayes slowly took the leather-bound planner from the younger detective's trembling hands.

He flipped it open.

Tomorrow's date had been circled in thick black ink.

Underneath it, written in Daniel Carter's unmistakably neat handwriting, were five chilling words.

10:00 A.M. – Emily's Funeral.

No question mark.

No explanation.

No crossed-out note.

Just a time.

A certainty.

Emily stared at the page until the letters blurred together.

"This..." she whispered. "This has to be some kind of joke."

No one laughed.

Hayes examined the rest of the entry.

Below the first line were several bullet points.

Transfer final assets.

Destroy remaining files.

Leave before sunset.

His expression darkened.

"This wasn't a joke."

Emily's hands instinctively covered her stomach.

The baby kicked—just barely, too faint for anyone else to notice.

Or perhaps she imagined it.

Either way, the tiny movement brought her back to reality.

She wasn't the only victim anymore.

There was another life depending on her.

Hayes closed the planner.

"We're taking you into protective custody."

Emily looked up.

"Am I under arrest?"

"No."

"Then why?"

"Because if this planner reflects Daniel's actual intentions..."

He paused.

"...someone may still try to finish what he started."

A Safe Place

Less than an hour later, two unmarked police vehicles left the estate.

One carried Detective Hayes and Emily.

The other followed closely behind.

No flashing lights.

No sirens.

Just darkness and silence.

Rain began to fall, soft at first, then harder against the windshield.

Emily stared out the window.

The city lights stretched into long streaks across the wet glass.

She couldn't stop thinking about the planner.

Emily's Funeral.

Daniel hadn't written "Leave Emily."

He hadn't written "Divorce Emily."

He had written Funeral.

The difference was impossible to ignore.

Hayes broke the silence.

"Has Daniel ever threatened you?"

"No."

"Physically hurt you?"

"No."

"Made you afraid?"

Emily hesitated.

She almost answered automatically.

Then memories surfaced.

Not punches.

Not shouting.

Something quieter.

Much more subtle.

"I wasn't afraid of him," she said.

"I was afraid of disappointing him."

Hayes glanced at her.

"What do you mean?"

"He always knew exactly what to say."

"If dinner wasn't ready..."

"He'd tell me he understood."

"But then he'd sigh."

"If I worked late..."

"He'd smile."

"And then spend the evening reminding me how lonely he felt."

"He never raised his voice."

"He just..."

She searched for the right word.

"...made me feel guilty."

Hayes nodded slowly.

"Control doesn't always begin with violence."

Emily looked down at her wedding ring.

She had forgotten it was still on her finger.

Without thinking, she twisted it once.

Then again.

Finally, she pulled it off.

For several seconds she simply stared at the diamond that had once represented forever.

Then she placed it in Hayes' hand.

"I'm done believing lies."

St. Catherine's Medical Center

The hospital entrance had already been secured.

Uniformed officers stood near every door.

Hayes escorted Emily through a private elevator to the maternity wing.

"I don't understand," Emily said.

"I'm not due for months."

"We're not here for delivery."

"Then why?"

"The paramedics who examined you at the estate noticed something."

A knot formed in her stomach.

"What?"

"They recommended a full examination."

Emily suddenly remembered the crushing pain she had felt after being shoved to the floor during the confrontation.

She had ignored it.

There had been too much happening.

Now...

She felt a dull ache low in her abdomen.

Fear settled into her chest.

Dr. Olivia Bennett

The examination room was quiet.

Warm lights.

Cream-colored walls.

The faint scent of disinfectant.

Dr. Olivia Bennett entered carrying a tablet.

She looked to be in her late forties, calm and composed.

"Mrs. Carter?"

Emily hesitated.

"Just Emily."

The doctor smiled gently.

"All right."

She reviewed the chart.

"I understand you've had a very stressful evening."

Emily let out a hollow laugh.

"That's one way to describe it."

The doctor didn't smile.

"Stress during pregnancy isn't uncommon."

"This level of stress..."

She shook her head.

"...is something else."

Emily's heart raced.

"Is my baby okay?"

"We're going to find out."

The ultrasound room was almost completely dark.

The only light came from the monitor.

Emily lay quietly while the technician applied cool gel to her abdomen.

She remembered this feeling.

Only once before.

The day Daniel had held her hand while they first heard the heartbeat.

He had cried.

Or at least...

She had believed he was crying.

Now she wondered if even those tears had been rehearsed.

"Ready?" the technician asked softly.

Emily nodded.

The monitor flickered to life.

Gray shadows slowly became recognizable shapes.

Then—

A tiny heartbeat appeared.

Fast.

Steady.

Beautiful.

Emily burst into tears.

Not because she was sad.

Because for the first time all night...

Something was real.

The baby.

Nothing else mattered.

The doctor watched carefully.

"The heartbeat is strong."

Emily let out a shaky breath.

"Thank God."

"But..."

Her heart stopped again.

"...there are signs of stress."

"What does that mean?"

"You've experienced significant emotional and physical trauma."

"The pregnancy is still viable."

"But from this point forward..."

The doctor met her eyes.

"...you need complete rest."

Emily nodded immediately.

"I'll do anything."

The doctor hesitated.

"There is one more concern."

Emily felt cold.

"What?"

"Have you been experiencing dizziness?"

"Yes."

"Headaches?"

"Sometimes."

"Blurred vision?"

Emily frowned.

"I thought it was exhaustion."

The doctor looked thoughtful.

"We'll run additional blood tests."

The News Breaks

Across the city, television screens flashed with breaking headlines.

Billionaire Heiress Accused of Wedding Theft Cleared by Security Footage

Wedding Scandal Turns Criminal Investigation

Husband Suspected in Elaborate Financial Fraud

Reporters surrounded the mansion.

Social media exploded.

Millions watched the leaked security footage showing Emily being searched while Daniel stood silently nearby.

The public reaction was immediate.

Outrage.

Sympathy.

Disbelief.

Within hours, hashtags supporting Emily began trending worldwide.

But another hashtag was spreading just as quickly.

#WhereIsDaniel

Because Daniel Carter had disappeared.

The Escape

Three hours earlier...

While detectives questioned witnesses...

Daniel had been transported to police headquarters.

Halfway there...

The transport vehicle had stopped.

Not because of traffic.

Because another police cruiser blocked the road.

Officers stepped out.

Everything appeared routine.

Until the shooting started.

The attack lasted less than forty seconds.

By the time reinforcements arrived...

Two officers were dead.

One seriously wounded.

The transport van stood open.

Its rear doors hanging wide.

Daniel Carter was gone.

Protective Custody

Hayes received the call outside Emily's hospital room.

He didn't speak for nearly a minute.

When he returned inside...

Emily immediately noticed his face.

"What happened?"

He considered lying.

Then decided against it.

"Daniel escaped."

The words seemed unreal.

"What?"

"The transport was ambushed."

She slowly sat upright.

"Is he hurt?"

"We don't know."

"Did they catch the attackers?"

"No."

She closed her eyes.

It wasn't random.

It couldn't be.

Someone had planned everything.

Daniel wasn't working alone.

He never had been.

A Visitor

It was nearly midnight when the nurse knocked softly.

"Emily?"

"Yes?"

"You have a visitor."

Hayes immediately stood.

"Nobody was approved."

The nurse frowned.

"She says she's family."

Emily looked confused.

"My mother?"

"No."

The nurse stepped aside.

An elderly woman entered.

Elegant.

Silver hair.

Dark green coat despite the warm hospital.

Emily frowned.

"I don't know you."

The woman smiled sadly.

"I know."

Hayes stepped between them.

"Name?"

"Eleanor Brooks."

Emily's blood froze.

She had seen that face before.

The photograph.

The woman from the rainstorm.

Daniel's godmother.

Hayes' hand instinctively moved toward his weapon.

"You have five seconds to explain why you're here."

Eleanor looked directly at Emily.

"I'm here to save your child's life."

Silence.

Hayes didn't lower his guard.

Emily's voice barely worked.

"Why would you help me?"

The old woman's eyes filled with regret.

"Because I helped destroy yours."

No one spoke.

Eleanor slowly reached into her handbag.

Hayes drew his pistol.

"Hands where I can see them."

She nodded calmly.

Instead of a weapon...

She removed a thick envelope.

"I've spent four years pretending to be loyal."

She placed the envelope on the bedside table.

"I can't do it anymore."

Emily stared at it.

"What is it?"

"Everything Daniel never wanted you to know."

Hayes carefully opened the envelope.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Bank records.

Birth certificates.

Old newspaper clippings.

Then one photograph slipped onto the hospital floor.

It landed face-up.

Emily leaned forward.

Her breath caught.

The picture showed Daniel.

Several years younger.

Standing beside a little boy who looked no older than five.

Daniel had one arm around the child.

Both were smiling.

Emily whispered,

"...Who is that?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"My grandson."

Emily frowned.

"I thought you said you were Daniel's godmother."

"I lied."

The old woman looked at Emily with tears in her eyes.

"I've lied about almost everything."

Hayes picked up the photograph.

His eyes narrowed.

"What aren't you telling us?"

Eleanor answered in a voice barely above a whisper.

"I'm not Daniel's godmother."

She looked directly at Emily.

"I'm his mother."

The room fell silent.

Emily could barely breathe.

Daniel had told everyone his parents died in a car accident when he was sixteen.

It had been one of the stories that made people sympathize with him.

Another lie.

But that wasn't what terrified her.

She looked back at the photograph.

The little boy.

Five years old.

Standing beside Daniel.

Emily's pulse thundered.

She looked at Eleanor.

"If you're his mother..."

She pointed at the child.

"...then who is he?"

A single tear rolled down Eleanor's cheek.

"That..."

She whispered.

"...is Daniel's son."

Emily felt the world collapse beneath her.

Daniel already had a child.

A child he had hidden.

A family he had erased.

And somehow...

May you like

She knew this was only the beginning.
