Chapter 9 – Kidnapped

Chapter 9 – Kidnapped

The room fell into a heavy silence.

Arthur Blackwood's photograph remained on the laptop screen.

A smiling man.

Silver-haired.

Elegant.

The kind of man people trusted within minutes of meeting him.

Emily couldn't take her eyes off the image.

"I remember him," she whispered.

Margaret slowly nodded.

"He always brought you books."

Emily closed her eyes.

Not just books.

He had taught her how to play chess.

He had attended her high school graduation.

When she turned eighteen, he had mailed her a handwritten letter that ended with the words:

"Never stop trusting good people."

She had framed it.

The irony now made her feel sick.

Marcus finally broke the silence.

"If Arthur Blackwood is alive..."

Rebecca Collins finished the thought.

"...then everything we've believed about the Circle is incomplete."

Rachel quietly closed the laptop.

"We've been hunting the wrong people."

A False Sense of Safety

Three days passed.

For the first time since the wedding, nothing happened.

No anonymous phone calls.

No mysterious flowers.

No dead witnesses.

The media slowly shifted its attention toward other stories.

Outside St. Catherine's Medical Center, reporters disappeared one by one.

Emily remained under constant police protection.

Two officers outside her room.

Two more on the floor below.

Marcus visited twice each day.

Rebecca rotated FBI agents through the building.

The hospital had become a fortress.

Or so everyone believed.

Emily spent most of her time reading.

Sometimes she rested a hand over her growing belly and whispered to the baby.

"I promise..."

"...I'll keep you safe."

She wasn't sure whether she was reassuring the child—

or herself.

Noah's Question

Across the city...

Noah sat on the living room floor building a model lighthouse.

Eleanor watched him quietly.

"Grandma?"

"Yes?"

"When Dad comes home..."

"Can Emily come too?"

Eleanor looked up.

"What makes you ask that?"

Noah smiled.

"Dad looked happy in her pictures."

Eleanor's heart broke.

Daniel had hidden one family while building another.

Noah had seen only a few photographs of Emily over the years.

Daniel had always claimed she was "an old friend."

Children believed what adults told them.

Until the truth arrived.

The doorbell rang.

Eleanor immediately became alert.

She looked through the peephole.

Marcus.

She opened the door.

"Detective."

Marcus stepped inside.

"I need you and Noah moved."

She frowned.

"Why?"

"We intercepted encrypted messages."

"What kind?"

Marcus looked toward Noah before lowering his voice.

"The Circle is looking for the boy."

Eleanor instinctively wrapped an arm around her grandson.

"No."

"They won't find him."

Marcus wished he shared her confidence.

The Doctor's Advice

Dr. Olivia Bennett entered Emily's hospital room carrying new test results.

She smiled warmly.

"Your blood pressure has improved."

Emily smiled back.

"That's good news."

"It is."

The doctor reviewed the chart.

"The baby's heartbeat remains strong."

Emily felt relief wash over her.

"But..."

The doctor's expression grew serious.

"I want to discharge you tomorrow."

Emily blinked.

"I thought I needed complete rest."

"You do."

"But hospitals aren't always the safest places."

Marcus, standing near the window, agreed.

"We've arranged a secure location."

Emily nodded.

"Where?"

Marcus smiled faintly.

"You'll know tomorrow."

He refused to say more.

Even inside the room.

Even with the door locked.

Trust had become a luxury none of them could afford.

The Transfer

The following morning began before sunrise.

The plan was simple.

At 5:30 a.m., before reporters arrived, Emily would leave through an underground service exit.

Three identical ambulances would depart simultaneously.

Only one would carry Emily.

The others would act as decoys.

Rebecca approved the operation.

Marcus personally inspected every vehicle.

Rachel disabled every hospital security camera for thirty seconds during the departure to prevent digital tracking.

Everything looked perfect.

Too perfect.

At exactly 5:28 a.m., Emily climbed into the ambulance.

A paramedic adjusted her blanket.

"You'll be comfortable."

She nodded politely.

Marcus closed the rear doors.

"I'll be right behind you."

Emily smiled weakly.

"I know."

The convoy began moving.

Three ambulances.

Four police SUVs.

Two FBI vehicles.

The streets remained almost empty.

Marcus watched the GPS trackers on the dashboard.

Every vehicle followed its assigned route.

Then—

One signal disappeared.

Marcus frowned.

"Vehicle Two?"

Silence.

He tried the radio again.

"Vehicle Two, respond."

Nothing.

Rebecca looked up sharply.

"Marcus..."

The GPS icon blinked once.

Then vanished completely.

The Tunnel

Inside Ambulance Two...

Emily looked toward the front.

Something felt wrong.

The siren wasn't on.

The driver had turned onto an unfamiliar road.

She leaned forward.

"This isn't the route."

No answer.

The paramedic sitting beside her smiled.

It wasn't a friendly smile.

He slowly removed his surgical mask.

Emily's blood froze.

She had never seen the man before.

"Who are you?"

The driver locked the cabin doors.

The ambulance entered an abandoned maintenance tunnel beneath the city.

The paramedic calmly removed his ID badge.

Then his blond wig.

Dark hair fell across his forehead.

"We're almost there."

Emily reached for the emergency alarm.

His hand caught her wrist.

"Please."

His voice remained strangely gentle.

"Don't make this harder."

She pulled away.

"Marcus knows."

He smiled.

"Marcus is following the wrong ambulance."

The Gas

Emily screamed.

The man sighed.

"I hoped we wouldn't do this."

He reached beneath the seat.

A small silver cylinder clicked into place.

White vapor filled the back of the ambulance.

Emily covered her mouth.

Her vision blurred almost immediately.

She fought to stay awake.

She thought about the baby.

Not me...

Please...

Not the baby...

The stranger caught her before she collapsed.

"I'm sorry."

His voice sounded distant now.

"This isn't personal."

Darkness swallowed everything.

The Discovery

Marcus reached the safe house twelve minutes later.

He opened the ambulance doors himself.

Empty.

No Emily.

Only blankets.

His heart stopped.

Rebecca's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"What?"

Her face drained of color.

She slowly lowered the phone.

"The real ambulance..."

Marcus already knew.

"...never reached the checkpoint."

Waking Up

Emily awoke slowly.

Her head pounded.

Her wrists were tied.

She blinked against the harsh light.

Concrete walls.

Metal ceiling.

No windows.

An underground room.

She instinctively placed both hands over her stomach.

The baby.

Still there.

Still alive.

She closed her eyes in relief.

A voice echoed through the room.

"I was beginning to think you'd sleep all day."

Emily looked up.

Daniel Carter stepped out of the shadows.

He wore a simple black shirt.

No suit.

No expensive watch.

No wedding ring.

For the first time...

He looked exactly like what he truly was.

A man who had spent years pretending to be someone else.

She stared at him.

"You kidnapped me."

He smiled sadly.

"I rescued you."

Emily laughed bitterly.

"Is that what you call this?"

He walked closer.

"If I'd left you with Marcus..."

"You'd already be dead."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

"I expect you to listen."

She looked toward the locked steel door.

Daniel noticed.

"You can't escape."

"I'll scream."

"No one outside will help."

Silence settled between them.

Finally Emily spoke.

"Why?"

Daniel sighed.

"Because everything has changed."

"What changed?"

"They know you're pregnant."

Emily's pulse quickened.

"They already knew."

"No."

He shook his head.

"They know whose child you're carrying."

Emily frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel's face lost every trace of emotion.

"They've seen the DNA results."

She stared at him.

"What DNA results?"

"The test from the hospital."

"I never took—"

Realization struck.

The blood tests.

Dr. Bennett.

The lab work.

Daniel continued quietly.

"The Circle runs the laboratory."

Emily felt the room spinning.

"My baby..."

Daniel interrupted.

"...isn't valuable because it's mine."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"It's valuable because of who your father really was."

Emily's voice barely worked.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

He turned toward the steel door.

"But first..."

The lock buzzed.

The door slowly opened.

A little boy stepped hesitantly into the room.

Holding a worn drawing of a lighthouse.

Emily recognized him immediately from the photograph.

Noah.

Daniel rested a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"Noah..."

The child smiled shyly at Emily.

"Hi."

Then he looked up at Daniel.

"Dad..."

He pointed toward Emily's stomach.

"...is that my baby brother?"

Daniel closed his eyes for a brief moment.

Emily felt tears fill hers.

Because in that single innocent question...

The child had unknowingly shattered every wall Daniel had built.

For the first time since the nightmare began...

Emily saw something she had never imagined possible.

Genuine regret.

On Daniel Carter's face.
