Chapter 5 – The Flash Drive Opens

Chapter 5 – The Flash Drive Opens

The surveillance room changed everything.

Until that moment, Detective Marcus Hayes had believed Daniel Carter was an exceptionally intelligent con artist—a man who had spent years manipulating a wealthy woman for financial gain.

Now the investigation had become something far larger.

Forty-seven labeled hard drives.

Forty-seven women.

Forty-seven lives documented in meticulous detail.

It wasn't greed.

It was a system.

And Daniel had only been one part of it.

The Hidden Room

Just after sunrise, the forensic team sealed Daniel's townhouse.

Every camera, hard drive, notebook, and electronic device was cataloged before being removed.

The hidden room itself had been built behind a reinforced bookshelf in the basement.

Without the anonymous blueprint delivered to police overnight, they might never have found it.

Rows of monitors lined the walls.

Each screen displayed recordings from different homes, offices, restaurants, and hotel rooms.

Some cameras had clearly been hidden inside smoke detectors.

Others inside clocks.

Picture frames.

Air purifiers.

Even children's toys.

One forensic technician stared at the equipment in disbelief.

"I've never seen anything like this."

Another officer pointed toward a steel cabinet in the corner.

"It's locked."

Marcus nodded.

"Open it."

A hydraulic cutter sliced through the heavy lock.

Inside sat dozens of identical black flash drives.

Each one numbered.

A-01.

A-02.

A-03.

...

All the way to A-52.

But something was missing.

There should have been fifty-two drives.

Only fifty-one remained.

The empty slot bore a small engraved label.

MASTER

Marcus immediately understood.

Daniel hadn't escaped with random evidence.

He had escaped with the only drive that mattered.

The Digital Forensics Lab

Eight hours later...

The Cybercrime Division buzzed with controlled chaos.

Computer towers hummed.

Screens glowed with lines of encrypted code.

Detective Hayes stood behind Senior Digital Analyst Rachel Kim as she inserted one of the recovered drives into a secure workstation.

"Any luck?"

Rachel sighed.

"They're encrypted with military-grade protection."

"How long?"

"Normally?"

She shrugged.

"Months."

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"We don't have months."

Rachel smiled faintly.

"Fortunately..."

She pointed toward another desk.

"...someone already made a mistake."

A younger analyst rolled his chair across the room.

"They reused part of the encryption key."

Marcus frowned.

"Meaning?"

"It means whoever built this system believed no one would ever recover multiple drives."

Rachel nodded.

"They were wrong."

Three hours later...

A loud beep echoed through the lab.

Rachel leaned forward.

"I'm in."

Marcus stepped closer.

"Open it."

The screen remained black for several seconds.

Then white letters appeared.

PROPERTY OF THE CIRCLE

Below it, a warning.

Unauthorized access will activate emergency protocols.

Rachel clicked anyway.

Nothing happened.

Instead...

A list of folders appeared.

Not financial records.

Not bank statements.

Not investment portfolios.

Just names.

Hundreds of names.

Politicians.

Judges.

Police officers.

Corporate executives.

Media personalities.

Marcus felt a chill.

"This..."

Rachel whispered.

"...isn't blackmail."

"What is it?"

She clicked one profile.

A video opened.

A state senator sat inside a hotel suite.

Across from him sat a woman.

They spoke casually.

Then the senator accepted a thick envelope filled with cash.

The date appeared in the corner.

Four years earlier.

Rachel opened another file.

A famous television anchor secretly meeting organized crime figures.

Another.

A judge accepting expensive jewelry.

Another.

A prosecutor destroying evidence.

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

Every recording documented corruption.

Perfectly.

Professionally.

The Circle hadn't merely collected money.

They had collected leverage.

Emily Watches

Later that afternoon...

Marcus visited the hospital carrying only one tablet.

Emily sat beside the window, watching rain slide slowly down the glass.

She hadn't slept.

Not really.

The nightmares came each time she closed her eyes.

Daniel's smile.

The ballroom.

The planner.

The surveillance cameras.

She looked exhausted.

Marcus placed the tablet on the table.

"I need to show you something."

Emily frowned.

"What is it?"

"The flash drive."

She hesitated.

"You opened it?"

"One of them."

Emily looked at the screen.

The names meant nothing to her.

Until...

She saw one she recognized.

Charles Monroe

Her father's longtime attorney.

Her pulse quickened.

"No..."

Marcus selected the file.

The video began.

Charles Monroe sat inside a private office.

Across from him sat Daniel.

The recording quality was excellent.

Daniel slid several documents across the desk.

Charles signed them without reading.

Then Daniel handed him an envelope.

Money.

A lot of it.

Emily stared.

"I trusted him."

Marcus didn't answer.

She watched the date.

Two years ago.

Exactly one week before her father officially transferred several investment holdings into her name.

Except...

According to the video...

Charles had already agreed to transfer control to Daniel.

Without her knowledge.

Her inheritance had been stolen long before she realized anything was wrong.

The Unexpected Folder

Rachel called Marcus immediately.

"You need to come back."

"What happened?"

"You were right."

"About what?"

"There's another partition."

Marcus hurried back to headquarters.

Rachel pointed toward the screen.

"The drive contains hidden files."

She opened the concealed directory.

Only one folder appeared.

PROJECT EVE

Marcus exchanged confused looks with the analysts.

"Open it."

Inside were only six video recordings.

Each numbered.

Each labeled with dates spanning nearly five years.

Rachel clicked the first.

The screen displayed Daniel.

He sat alone inside an office.

A camera faced him directly.

He wasn't smiling.

He looked tense.

As though reporting to someone.

His voice was calm.

"Subject E-17 has accepted the first invitation."

Marcus frowned.

Subject?

Daniel continued.

"Psychological profile matches expectations."

"Trust index increasing."

"No suspicion detected."

The video ended.

Rachel opened the second.

Daniel again.

"Subject E-17 has agreed to merge financial accounts."

"Estimated completion of Phase Two: six months."

The third.

"Subject now emotionally dependent."

"Minimal outside influence."

The fourth.

"Power of attorney secured."

"Preparing asset consolidation."

Marcus suddenly understood.

"E-17..."

Rachel nodded.

"Emily."

The room fell silent.

Her life had been reduced to project milestones.

Not a marriage.

Not a relationship.

An operation.

Every smile.

Every vacation.

Every anniversary.

Had been progress reports.

The Fifth Recording

Rachel clicked again.

Daniel appeared older.

More tired.

Unlike previous recordings...

He wasn't reading from notes.

He looked directly into the camera.

Something seemed wrong.

"If you're watching this..."

He paused.

"...then something has gone terribly wrong."

Marcus leaned closer.

Daniel continued.

"I know the Circle will eventually kill me."

Rachel looked surprised.

Daniel laughed quietly.

"I've accepted that."

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

This wasn't the confident manipulator from the ballroom.

This man looked frightened.

Exhausted.

Haunted.

"I've done terrible things."

"I can't undo them."

"But I can delay what's coming."

Rachel whispered,

"What is he talking about?"

Daniel reached toward the camera.

"I hid copies."

Marcus' eyes widened.

"Not because I wanted justice."

"Because nobody should possess this much power."

The recording ended abruptly.

No explanation.

No names.

Nothing else.

The Sixth Recording

Silence filled the lab.

Rachel clicked the final file.

The screen remained black.

Then Daniel's voice appeared.

No image.

Only audio.

"If this file exists..."

"...I'm already dead."

Marcus exchanged a glance with Rachel.

Daniel continued.

"Don't trust Richard Holloway."

"He isn't the Director."

"He's only the face."

A long pause followed.

Then one final sentence.

"The real Director..."

Static interrupted the recording.

Loud.

Violent.

The audio cracked.

Then—

Nothing.

Rachel checked the file.

"It's corrupted."

Marcus frowned.

"Can you recover it?"

"I'll try."

"How long?"

"I don't know."

Marcus stared at the frozen screen.

One sentence.

One missing name.

Someone had deliberately destroyed the most important part of the recording.

The Hospital

That evening...

Emily finally managed to fall asleep.

For the first time since the wedding.

The medication had eased her anxiety enough for exhaustion to win.

A police officer stood outside her room.

Another watched the hallway.

Marcus had doubled security after Daniel's escape.

At 9:43 p.m., a nurse entered carrying fresh flowers.

She smiled politely.

"Delivery for Mrs. Carter."

The officer checked the arrangement.

Nothing suspicious.

White lilies.

Blue orchids.

A handwritten card.

He nodded.

"You can leave them."

The nurse placed the bouquet beside Emily's bed and quietly walked away.

Five minutes later...

Emily woke.

She noticed the flowers immediately.

There was no sender's name.

Only three handwritten words.

Look underneath them.

Her heart began racing.

She carefully lifted the bouquet.

Hidden beneath the stems was a tiny prepaid cellphone.

It vibrated the moment she touched it.

Unknown Number.

Against every instinct...

She answered.

No one spoke.

Only slow breathing.

Then...

A familiar voice.

Daniel.

Soft.

Calm.

Almost affectionate.

"Hello, Emily."

Her blood ran cold.

She looked toward the police officer.

He hadn't heard.

Daniel continued.

"I've been watching."

She glanced around the room in terror.

"What do you want?"

"I need you to listen carefully."

"You have exactly twenty-four hours."

"For what?"

His voice became deadly serious.

"Leave the hospital."

"Tell no one."

"Trust no one."

She gripped the phone tighter.

"Why would I ever trust you again?"

Daniel answered with a sentence that made her heart stop.

"Because the people protecting you..."

He paused.

"...are the same people who murdered your father."

The line went dead.

Emily stared at the silent phone.

Outside her room...

Neither police officer noticed the shadow standing at the far end of the hallway.

The figure wore a doctor's coat.

A surgical mask covered the lower half of the face.

The person watched Emily's room for another ten seconds.

May you like

Then quietly disappeared around the corner.
