Chapter 10: The Trial of the King

Chapter 10: The Trial of the King

Rafael De Santos had spent his entire life sitting across from people who were afraid of him.

Judges.

Politicians.

Business leaders.

Enemies.

Friends.

Everyone who entered his world understood one thing.

Rafael was not a man who was questioned.

He was a man who asked questions.

But that changed the moment Elena De Santos spoke his father's name.

"Our father."

Two words.

Two words that destroyed the foundation Rafael had built his entire identity upon.

For years, Rafael believed his father was a complicated man.

Cold.

Demanding.

Difficult.

But honorable.

That belief had shaped him.

His father's lessons had become his own rules.

Power was protection.

Weakness was dangerous.

Family came first.

But what if the man who taught him those lessons had been the first person to break them?

The abandoned church remained silent.

Elena stood several feet away.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying fourteen years of secrets.

Rafael stared at her.

"Start talking."

His voice was controlled.

Too controlled.

Elena knew that tone.

Everyone who knew Rafael knew it.

It was the voice before the storm.

"Your father wasn't the man you thought he was."

Rafael's jaw tightened.

"I heard that already."

"From who?"

"Mother."

Elena looked away.

"Then she finally told you."

The sentence confirmed everything.

Rafael felt something inside him break.

"Everyone knew."

A pause.

"Everyone except me."

Elena stepped closer.

"Rafael..."

"No."

His voice stopped her.

"Don't explain yet."

He looked around the empty church.

"First tell me why."

Elena swallowed.

"Because you were the only person he trusted."

The answer confused him.

"Trusted?"

"Yes."

"After everything?"

"Especially after everything."

Elena took a deep breath.

"Our father created everything you eventually inherited."

"The businesses?"

"Yes."

"The influence?"

"Yes."

"The fear?"

A pause.

"Yes."

Rafael looked away.

"Then what was the problem?"

Elena's expression changed.

"He didn't build an empire."

A pause.

"He built a machine."

Rafael listened.

"He used people."

Elena continued.

"He controlled politicians. Destroyed competitors. Bought loyalty."

"That's not exactly new."

"No."

Her voice became softer.

"But he didn't stop there."

"He destroyed anyone who threatened him."

Rafael knew that world.

But hearing it connected to his father felt different.

"Daniel found the records."

Elena said.

"Daniel discovered our father had been responsible for things nobody knew about."

"What things?"

Elena hesitated.

"Deaths."

The word echoed.

Rafael said nothing.

Because some part of him had always known.

"My father died believing he was protecting the family."

Elena said.

"But he was protecting himself."

Rafael looked at her.

"And Adrian?"

Elena's face hardened.

"Adrian was his student."

A pause.

"He learned everything from him."

The pieces finally connected.

Adrian wasn't creating something new.

He was continuing something old.

"Why keep me out?"

Elena looked at him.

"Because you were becoming him."

The words hit harder than any attack.

Rafael went completely still.

"Explain."

"You were young."

Elena said.

"Angry."

"Ambitious."

"Determined to prove yourself."

She looked down.

"You wanted his approval."

Rafael said nothing.

Because it was true.

"I watched you become more like him every year."

Elena's voice broke.

"And I was afraid that if you learned the truth, you wouldn't stop."

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Because Rafael hated one thing more than betrayal.

Being predictable.

"You thought I would become him."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

The honesty hurt.

But Rafael respected it.

"Then why come back now?"

Elena looked toward the church doors.

"Because Adrian is finishing what your father started."

Rafael's eyes narrowed.

"Meaning?"

"He doesn't want your money."

A pause.

"He wants your name."

That evening, Rafael returned home.

But he wasn't the same man who had left.

Clara noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

Rafael looked exhausted.

"My father."

She understood.

"He was involved."

Rafael nodded.

"In everything."

Clara sat beside him.

"What are you going to do?"

The old Rafael would have answered immediately.

Destroy.

Punish.

End.

But this time...

He hesitated.

"I don't know."

Clara looked surprised.

"You don't know?"

"No."

A long silence.

"Because every choice feels like becoming him."

That was the first time Clara saw something she never expected.

Rafael De Santos was not afraid of losing power.

He was afraid of becoming a monster.

Meanwhile, Adrian Kell prepared his final move.

He watched news reports about Rafael.

Rumors were spreading.

Questions about his businesses.

Investigations.

Old accusations.

Adrian smiled.

The king was finally being judged.

Not by enemies.

By his own history.

The next morning, Rafael received a summons.

A government investigation.

Official.

Public.

Dangerous.

For years, people had whispered about Rafael De Santos.

Now they wanted answers.

The courtroom was filled.

Reporters.

Lawyers.

Officials.

Everyone wanted to see the feared man brought down.

Rafael entered calmly.

No anger.

No intimidation.

Just silence.

The judge looked at him.

"Mr. De Santos."

Rafael stood.

"Yes."

"You understand the seriousness of these allegations?"

"Yes."

"And your response?"

Everyone expected arrogance.

Denial.

Attack.

Instead:

"I want the truth."

The courtroom went quiet.

The prosecutor frowned.

"Even if that truth damages you?"

Rafael looked directly at him.

"Especially then."

For the first time...

The world saw something different.

Not the man feared by everyone.

A man willing to face what he had inherited.

But then the prosecutor presented the first piece of evidence.

A document.

Signed by Rafael's father.

And underneath...

A signature Rafael recognized.

His own.

From when he was twenty years old.

Rafael stared.

Because someone had forged his involvement.

Or worse...

Someone had manipulated him into signing something he never understood.

The prosecutor spoke.

"Mr. De Santos."

A pause.

"Did you authorize this operation?"

The room waited.

Rafael looked at the document.

Then at the courtroom.

Then at Clara and Nate sitting behind him.

The old Rafael would have lied.

The old Rafael would have protected his name.

But that man was gone.

"I don't remember."

Gasps filled the room.

The prosecutor smiled slightly.

"Convenient."

Rafael ignored him.

"But I will find out."

The judge leaned forward.

"You understand you are admitting uncertainty?"

Rafael nodded.

"I understand."

"And you still choose this answer?"

"Yes."

Because for the first time in his life...

Rafael De Santos chose truth over power.

Outside the courtroom, Adrian watched the broadcast.

He smiled.

"Good."

His assistant looked confused.

"Good?"

Adrian nodded.

"He's finally becoming weak."

But Adrian misunderstood one thing.

Rafael was not becoming weak.

He was becoming something far more dangerous.

A man who had nothing left to hide.

And a man with nothing left to protect...

May you like

Was impossible to control.
