Chapter 5: The Night the Mafia Boss Came Home

Chapter 5: The Night the Mafia Boss Came Home

Rafael De Santos had spent years making sure nobody knew where he slept.

Not because he was afraid.

Because information was a weakness.

A man's home revealed everything.

His habits.

His family.

His vulnerabilities.

His heart.

Enemies could not hurt what they could not find.

That was the rule Rafael had lived by.

But tonight, that rule changed.

Because for the first time in his life...

Rafael was not protecting a business.

He was protecting a family.

The safe apartment was supposed to be temporary.

Quiet.

Hidden.

Untouchable.

Every entrance monitored.

Every camera checked.

Every possible threat removed.

Rafael had personally inspected the building.

He trusted the security.

He trusted Diego.

He trusted himself.

But he had forgotten one thing.

The most dangerous enemies were not always the ones trying to break in.

Sometimes they were the ones who already knew the door existed.

Clara noticed the change in him first.

She always did.

"You haven't slept."

She said.

Rafael sat at the kitchen table, looking through documents.

"I sleep."

"No."

She placed a cup of coffee beside him.

"You exist."

He looked at her.

It was strange.

Almost everyone around Rafael avoided saying anything that might upset him.

Clara had somehow developed the opposite habit.

She said exactly what bothered him.

"You always do this?"

Rafael asked.

"Do what?"

"Carry everything yourself."

She smiled faintly.

"Funny."

"What?"

"That's my line."

For a moment, neither spoke.

Because they both recognized the same thing in each other.

Two people who had spent years believing needing help was dangerous.

From the living room, Nate appeared.

His hair was messy.

He was holding a book.

"Are you fighting?"

Clara immediately softened.

"No."

Nate looked at Rafael.

"Adults say that when they are."

For the first time in days...

Rafael almost smiled.

"Your son is very observant."

Clara sighed.

"Unfortunately."

Nate sat down.

"Mr. De Santos."

Rafael looked at him.

"Yes?"

"Are you going to leave?"

The question was simple.

But it carried a weight Rafael understood.

"No."

Nate studied him.

"How do you know?"

Rafael paused.

Because promises were dangerous.

Especially to children.

Adults could understand disappointment.

Children carried it differently.

"Because I said I wouldn't."

Nate nodded.

Satisfied.

And somehow, that frightened Rafael more than any enemy.

Because a child believed him.

That afternoon, Clara received a call from the hospital.

A patient needed her.

A colleague was sick.

They were short-staffed.

Her first instinct was immediate.

"I'll go."

Rafael looked up.

"No."

She turned.

"No?"

"You haven't slept."

"I've worked worse shifts."

"That's not the point."

Clara crossed her arms.

"And what exactly is the point?"

"The point is that you don't have to prove you're strong every second."

The words surprised both of them.

Because Rafael realized he wasn't only talking about her.

He was talking about himself.

Clara looked away.

"I need to work."

"I know."

"And I need to provide."

"I know."

"Then why are you arguing?"

Rafael looked toward Nate.

"Because your son needs his mother."

Her expression softened.

That was the thing about Rafael.

He was terrifying when he wanted control.

But when he protected someone...

It was different.

That evening, Clara finally agreed to rest.

Nate watched a movie in the living room.

Rafael sat nearby.

Not watching the movie.

Watching Nate.

The boy laughed at something on the screen.

A real laugh.

Not nervous.

Not forced.

Rafael found himself wondering when the last time was that Nate laughed like that.

The thought angered him.

Not at Nate.

At the world.

A child should not have to learn survival before happiness.

Then the lights went out.

Everything became dark.

Nate froze.

Rafael immediately stood.

"Diego."

No answer.

Rafael reached for his phone.

No signal.

That was impossible.

The emergency lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then disappeared.

Clara grabbed Nate.

"What happened?"

Rafael moved toward the window.

"Everyone stay away from the glass."

His voice changed.

The calm disappeared.

The businessman disappeared.

The man who built his reputation on fear returned.

Nate noticed.

"You're scared."

Rafael looked at him.

"No."

But Nate shook his head.

"You are."

The honesty stopped him.

Because the boy was right.

Not for himself.

For them.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Controlled.

Someone who was not trying to hide.

Rafael moved silently.

He reached the door.

Three knocks.

Not a threat.

A message.

Rafael's expression hardened.

Because only one person knocked like that.

Adrian.

"Rafael."

The voice came from the other side.

"Open the door."

Clara looked at him.

"That's him?"

Rafael nodded.

Nate moved closer.

"Is he the bad man?"

Rafael looked at the child.

Then the door.

"I don't know yet."

The answer surprised everyone.

Because Rafael De Santos always knew.

But Adrian was different.

The door opened.

Adrian Kell stood there.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

Almost friendly.

Exactly like always.

"Rafael."

Neither man moved.

"You look surprised."

Adrian said.

"You came here."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Adrian glanced past him.

At Clara.

At Nate.

Then smiled.

"Because I wanted to meet the boy who changed everything."

Rafael's entire body became still.

"What do you want?"

Adrian looked amused.

"Still asking the wrong question."

"What should I ask?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"Ask why Clara never told you the truth."

Silence.

Clara's face changed.

Rafael noticed.

And that was enough.

"Clara."

His voice was quiet.

She looked away.

Adrian smiled.

"There it is."

Rafael looked back at him.

"What truth?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Nate.

"Your father didn't die because of an accident."

The room froze.

Nate looked confused.

Clara immediately stepped forward.

"Don't."

But Adrian continued.

"He died because he found out something he wasn't supposed to know."

Rafael's eyes darkened.

"What?"

Adrian smiled.

"That your little boy..."

He looked directly at Nate.

"Was the reason someone wanted him dead."

Clara's face went pale.

Rafael turned toward her.

And for the first time...

He saw it.

The fear.

The secret.

The thing she had been carrying alone.

"What did he mean?"

Clara whispered:

"Rafael..."

Her voice broke.

"I didn't know how to tell you."

A silence followed.

Then Nate spoke.

"Mom?"

Everyone looked at him.

The boy's voice trembled.

"Tell him."

Clara closed her eyes.

Because after four years of silence...

May you like

The truth was finally coming home.
