Chapter 6: The Betrayal Inside the Family

Chapter 6: The Betrayal Inside the Family
The hardest truths were never the ones enemies revealed.
Rafael De Santos had learned that lesson long ago.
Enemies announced themselves.
They carried weapons.
They made threats.
They showed their intentions.
Family was different.
Family knew where you kept your heart.
And they knew exactly where to strike.
The apartment remained silent after Adrian left.
Not peaceful.
Not calm.
Silent in the way a room became after someone had dropped a glass and everyone was waiting for the sound of it breaking.
Rafael stood near the door.
His hand still rested on the handle.
As if some part of him expected Adrian to return and explain everything.
He didn't.
Because the explanation was standing twenty feet away.
Clara.
The woman who had spent years protecting Nate.
The woman who had refused his help.
The woman who had looked him directly in the eyes and told him she wanted nothing from him.
She had been hiding something.
"How long?"
Rafael asked.
Clara didn't pretend not to understand.
Her eyes lowered.
"Four years."
Four years.
The number landed heavier than Rafael expected.
"Four years you knew something connected to my family."
"No."
Her answer came quickly.
"Not your family."
Rafael's expression hardened.
"Then explain."
Clara looked at Nate.
The boy was standing between them, confused and frightened.
"Not in front of him."
Rafael followed her gaze.
And for a moment, his anger disappeared.
Because Nate was watching him.
Waiting.
Not like a child watching an argument.
Like a child waiting to find out if the adults around him would disappear.
Rafael lowered his voice.
"Nate."
The boy looked up.
"Go to your room for a few minutes."
The boy hesitated.
"Are you mad at Mom?"
The question stopped him.
Rafael looked at Clara.
Then back at Nate.
"I am trying to understand."
Nate studied him.
Then slowly walked away.
But before closing the door, he looked back.
"Don't leave."
Rafael felt something tighten inside his chest.
"I won't."
The door closed.
Now there were only two people.
Two adults.
Two secrets.
"Start."
Rafael said.
Clara sat down.
She looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like someone who had carried a weight so long she no longer remembered what it felt like to be without it.
"Nate's father..."
She stopped.
Rafael waited.
"His name was Daniel Bennett."
"I know."
"He wasn't just my husband."
Rafael watched her carefully.
"He worked for Adrian."
The room changed.
"What?"
Clara nodded.
"Before Nate was born, Daniel was an accountant."
"For Adrian?"
"Yes."
Rafael said nothing.
He knew where this was going.
And he hated that he already understood.
"Daniel discovered money was being moved through companies that didn't exist."
"Falcon Shield?"
Clara looked surprised.
"You know?"
"I know enough."
She swallowed.
"Daniel didn't know who was behind it at first."
"Then?"
"He found out."
A pause.
"He found out Adrian wasn't working alone."
Rafael's eyes narrowed.
"Who else?"
Clara looked away.
"Someone inside your family."
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed the room.
Rafael stood.
"No."
Clara looked at him.
"I know what I heard."
"No."
His voice became colder.
"You don't understand."
"I do."
"You don't."
Rafael turned away.
Because for fourteen years, he had protected the image of his family.
Even after losing people.
Even after betrayal.
Even after pain.
Some lies survived because people needed them to.
"Who?"
He asked.
Clara's eyes filled.
"I don't know."
Rafael turned back.
"You don't know?"
"Daniel never told me the name."
"Why?"
"Because he was trying to protect me."
A bitter laugh escaped Rafael.
"Everyone is always protecting someone."
Clara accepted the anger.
"Before he died, he gave me something."
"What?"
"A message."
"Where is it?"
She looked at him.
"I destroyed it."
Silence.
Rafael stared.
"You destroyed evidence?"
"I destroyed a reason for people to come after Nate."
"And did it work?"
She didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
Rafael walked to the window.
The city looked the same.
That was the strangest part.
The world continued.
Cars moved.
People laughed.
Lights turned on.
While his entire understanding of his own life collapsed.
"Why didn't you come to me?"
Clara looked down.
"Because Daniel warned me."
"About me?"
"No."
The answer surprised him.
"About Adrian."
Rafael turned.
"He said Adrian knew how you think."
A pause.
"He said Adrian knew exactly how to use your loyalty against you."
Rafael said nothing.
Because that was true.
Adrian had never tried to fight him.
He had studied him.
"Daniel said if I came to you, Adrian would know."
"And?"
"He said you would go after him."
Rafael almost smiled.
"Of course I would."
"And that's why he was afraid."
The sentence stayed between them.
Because Rafael understood.
Daniel had not feared Rafael's failure.
He feared Rafael's reaction.
"What happened the night Daniel died?"
Rafael asked.
Clara closed her eyes.
"He called me."
Her voice became quieter.
"He said he found something."
"What?"
"He said Adrian wasn't trying to steal money."
Rafael waited.
"He was trying to take control."
A pause.
"Of everything."
Rafael thought about the photograph.
The missing sister.
The hidden accounts.
The false security company.
It was all connected.
"Then why Nate?"
Clara looked toward his bedroom door.
"Because Daniel had copied everything."
"What?"
"The files."
Rafael stepped closer.
"Where?"
"He hid them."
"Where?"
Clara shook her head.
"I don't know."
Rafael's patience disappeared.
"Clara."
"I swear."
Her voice cracked.
"He never told me."
"Then why did Adrian say Nate was the reason everything started?"
Her face changed.
And Rafael saw it.
She knew something.
"What?"
Clara whispered:
"Because Daniel didn't hide the files."
A pause.
"He hid the key."
Rafael frowned.
"What key?"
Clara looked toward Nate's room.
"The key to the files was hidden somewhere Adrian could never find."
"Where?"
Clara's eyes filled with fear.
"With Nate."
The silence afterward was absolute.
A seven-year-old boy.
A hidden key.
A dead father.
A betrayal inside Rafael's own family.
Suddenly everything made sense.
Adrian hadn't been interested in Nate because of who he was.
He was interested because of what Nate carried.
Rafael walked toward the bedroom door.
Slowly.
He opened it.
Nate was sitting on the bed.
Holding his stuffed animal.
Waiting.
"Hey."
Rafael said softly.
The boy looked up.
"Are you mad?"
Rafael sat beside him.
"No."
"At Mom?"
Rafael looked toward the hallway.
"Not the way you think."
Nate was quiet.
Then:
"My dad said someone bad would come."
Rafael froze.
"When did he say that?"
"Before he died."
Rafael's heart tightened.
"What else did he say?"
Nate looked nervous.
"He said if someone ever asked me about the necklace..."
Rafael went still.
"What necklace?"
Nate reached beneath his shirt.
Slowly.
And pulled out a thin chain.
A small metal pendant hung from it.
Rafael stared.
Because he recognized it.
Not from Daniel.
From fourteen years ago.
From the photograph.
From the woman he thought was dead.
His sister's necklace.
Rafael touched nothing.
He couldn't.
Because the impossible truth was now hanging in front of him.
Adrian Kell had not returned to destroy Rafael.
He had returned because something Rafael lost fourteen years ago...
Was alive.
May you like
And Nate Bennett was the only person who could lead him to it.
