Chapter 3: The Man Behind Falcon Shield

Chapter 3: The Man Behind Falcon Shield

Rafael De Santos had built his empire on one principle.

Trust was earned slowly.

And once earned...

It was protected at all costs.

That was why Adrian Kell's name appearing behind the Falcon Shield operation felt impossible.

Not unlikely.

Not unexpected.

Impossible.

For twelve years, Adrian had stood beside Rafael.

He had been there when Rafael expanded from a small organization into something far larger.

He had handled negotiations.

Managed businesses.

Solved problems before they reached Rafael's desk.

People feared Rafael.

But they respected Adrian.

Because Adrian was different.

Where Rafael was silent and intimidating, Adrian was charming.

Where Rafael created fear, Adrian created loyalty.

He smiled.

He listened.

He remembered birthdays.

He shook hands.

He made people believe they mattered.

That was what made him dangerous.

A man who looked like a friend could walk closer than an enemy ever could.

Rafael stood alone inside his office, staring at the photograph.

Fourteen years old.

The edges were worn.

The colors faded.

But the faces remained clear.

Rafael.

Adrian.

And a woman he thought had disappeared from his life forever.

"Boss."

Diego entered quietly.

Rafael did not turn.

"Tell me you have something useful."

Diego placed a tablet on the desk.

"I traced the Falcon Shield transactions."

"How much?"

"Enough to make this bigger than we thought."

Rafael finally looked.

The numbers were impossible.

Millions moved through accounts that were supposed to be inactive.

Payments disguised as security contracts.

Fake invoices.

Unregistered operations.

"How long?"

Rafael asked.

"At least eighteen months."

Eighteen months.

The exact amount of time Adrian had slowly separated himself from Rafael's control.

"And I didn't notice."

Diego remained silent.

That was the wrong answer.

But it was the honest one.

Rafael walked toward the window.

Below him, the city moved like nothing had changed.

People went to work.

Children went to school.

Families ate dinner.

They lived ordinary lives.

Meanwhile, men using his name had been destroying someone else's.

"Find every employee connected to Falcon Shield."

Diego nodded.

"Already started."

"Everyone?"

"Yes."

Rafael turned.

"Not just the managers."

A pause.

"Everyone."

Diego understood.

This was not an investigation anymore.

It was a cleansing.

But before he could leave, Rafael stopped him.

"One more thing."

"Yes?"

"Nobody touches Adrian."

Diego looked surprised.

"Boss?"

"Nobody."

Rafael's voice was firm.

"I want him to know exactly why he falls."

Because Rafael De Santos understood betrayal.

A stranger could hurt you.

An enemy could attack you.

But betrayal from someone you trusted?

That required understanding.

Adrian Kell sat in his private office twenty miles away.

He was not hiding.

That was the interesting part.

People who betrayed Rafael usually ran.

Adrian did not.

He drank expensive whiskey.

Reviewed contracts.

Answered calls.

Acted like nothing had happened.

Because Adrian believed something Rafael had forgotten.

The strongest weapon against a powerful man was not a gun.

It was knowledge.

Adrian opened an old folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

Memories.

Everything Rafael thought was buried.

A woman smiled from one of the pictures.

Beautiful.

Young.

Happy.

Before everything changed.

Adrian touched the photograph.

"Almost there."

His assistant entered.

"Mr. Kell."

Adrian closed the folder.

"What?"

"The De Santos investigation has started."

He smiled.

"Of course it has."

"Should we move?"

"No."

The assistant looked confused.

Adrian leaned back.

"Rafael always moves toward the fire."

A small smile appeared.

"That is why he never notices who lit the match."

At St. Vincent Medical Center, Clara Bennett returned to work.

She had spent the night barely sleeping.

Not because of the threats.

Because of Rafael.

That bothered her more.

Danger was easy to understand.

People like Rafael were predictable.

Powerful men always wanted something.

But Rafael had done something she did not expect.

He had admitted fault.

That was more dangerous.

Because it made him human.

She checked on patients.

Answered questions.

Handled emergencies.

Pretended her entire life had not shifted overnight.

During her break, she found Nate sitting in the hospital waiting area.

Reading.

"You should be at school."

He looked up.

"You should be sleeping."

Clara sighed.

"That's different."

"Why?"

"Because I'm your mother."

Nate closed the book.

"Rafael says you don't ask for help."

Clara froze.

"What?"

"He said you shouldn't have had to do everything alone."

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

"Nate."

"Yeah?"

"Stay away from people like him."

Nate looked confused.

"Why?"

Because he was dangerous.

Because he had power.

Because men like Rafael always came with consequences.

But Clara couldn't say that.

Not after seeing him help her son.

"Because people like him live complicated lives."

Nate thought about that.

"Your life is complicated."

Clara smiled sadly.

"Yes."

"You still love me."

"Of course."

"Then maybe complicated doesn't always mean bad."

Clara had no answer.

Children had a way of saying things adults avoided.

That evening, Rafael returned to Luminosa.

The same restaurant.

The same corner table.

The same place where everything had changed.

But this time, he wasn't meeting a businessman.

He was meeting one of his own.

Marco Alvarez.

Head of Falcon Shield security.

Marco arrived ten minutes early.

A mistake.

Rafael noticed.

People arrived early when they were nervous.

"Sit."

Marco obeyed.

"You know why you're here."

Marco swallowed.

"Yes."

"Then start talking."

Marco looked down.

"I didn't know everything."

Rafael said nothing.

"I swear."

Marco continued.

"Adrian told us it was approved."

"By who?"

Marco hesitated.

Rafael leaned forward slightly.

"Choose your next words carefully."

"By you."

The restaurant became silent.

Rafael stared at him.

"You told people I approved this?"

"No."

Marco shook his head quickly.

"Adrian did."

"And you believed him."

Marco lowered his eyes.

That was the answer.

Rafael stood.

Not angry.

Not shouting.

Just disappointed.

"Do you know the difference between a soldier and a criminal, Marco?"

The man looked up.

"No."

"A soldier follows orders."

Rafael stepped closer.

"A criminal follows orders without asking who gets hurt."

Marco looked ashamed.

"Those men went into a home."

Rafael continued.

"They frightened a woman."

"They terrified a child."

His voice remained calm.

"And they used my name."

Marco looked up.

"Boss, please—"

"Where is Adrian?"

Silence.

Then Marco answered.

"He has been meeting someone."

"Who?"

Marco hesitated.

"Your sister."

For the first time that night...

Rafael stopped moving.

"My sister is dead."

Marco's face changed.

"No."

A whisper.

"No, boss."

Rafael's eyes darkened.

"Explain."

Marco looked terrified.

"Adrian said you would never look for her because you believed she was gone."

The room seemed to shrink.

Fourteen years.

Fourteen years of believing a tragedy had ended.

Rafael remembered the funeral.

The empty coffin.

The unanswered questions.

"No."

The word left his mouth quietly.

Marco looked at him.

"She's alive."

And somewhere inside Rafael De Santos...

The foundation holding everything together cracked.

Because Adrian Kell had not simply stolen money.

He had not simply betrayed a business.

He had brought back the one ghost Rafael had spent fourteen years trying to bury.

Meanwhile, across the city...

Adrian opened the same old photograph again.

The woman beside him smiled.

A woman Rafael believed he had lost forever.

"Time to come home."

May you like

Adrian whispered.
