Chapter 13: The Man Behind the Monster

Chapter 13: The Man Behind the Monster

For most of his life, Rafael De Santos believed monsters were created by choices.

A person chose greed.

A person chose cruelty.

A person chose power over people.

That was the simple version.

The version that allowed him to sleep at night.

Because if monsters were created by choices...

Then good people could choose differently.

But what Rafael discovered next was far more complicated.

Sometimes monsters were created by wounds.

Sometimes they were created by fear.

And sometimes...

They were created by people who convinced themselves they were doing the right thing.

The mansion was silent.

Too silent.

Nate was sleeping upstairs.

Safe.

Finally safe.

Clara sat in the living room with a cup of untouched tea.

Elena stood near the window.

And Rafael stood between them.

Three people connected by years of secrets.

Three people carrying pieces of the same broken story.

"Tell me."

Rafael's voice was calm.

But everyone in the room understood what that calm meant.

"Tell me why."

Elena looked down.

"Your mother was trying to protect you."

Rafael's expression hardened.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

A pause.

"Everyone keeps using that word."

Protect.

A word that had become a prison.

Elena sighed.

"Fourteen years ago, your father discovered I knew about his plans."

"His plans?"

"The empire."

She looked at him.

"The real one."

Rafael listened.

"Your father didn't want you to inherit a business."

A pause.

"He wanted you to inherit control."

"And you opposed him."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

The answer came quietly.

"Because I saw what he was becoming."

Rafael looked away.

Because that was the same thing Elena had said about him.

"Then what happened?"

Elena sat down.

"Your father found out I planned to expose him."

"To who?"

"Authorities."

A silence.

"Daniel was helping me."

Rafael closed his eyes.

Daniel.

The man who died trying to reveal the truth.

"Adrian found out."

Elena continued.

"He told your father."

"And my father killed him?"

"No."

The answer surprised him.

"No?"

Elena shook her head.

"Your father wanted to."

A pause.

"But Adrian stopped him."

Rafael frowned.

"Why?"

Elena looked at him.

"Because Adrian believed he was saving you."

The sentence was almost impossible to accept.

Adrian.

The man who destroyed families.

The man who manipulated everyone.

The man who kidnapped Nate.

Saving him?

"Explain."

Elena took a breath.

"Adrian saw what your father was turning you into."

"He knew you worshiped him."

"He knew you would follow him anywhere."

Rafael said nothing.

Because it was true.

"Adrian believed if your father stayed alive, you would become worse than him."

A pause.

"So Adrian removed him."

Rafael looked up.

"What does that mean?"

Elena hesitated.

"Your father didn't die naturally."

The room froze.

Rafael stared.

"Who killed him?"

Elena looked at him.

"Adrian."

Silence.

"He killed my father?"

"Yes."

"Then why?"

"Because he thought it was the only way to save you."

Rafael laughed.

But there was no humor.

"So he destroyed my life to protect me."

Elena looked away.

"Yes."

The irony was almost unbearable.

Adrian had spent years claiming he created Rafael.

And maybe...

In a twisted way...

He believed it.

Later that evening, Rafael visited Adrian.

Not in anger.

Not with revenge.

With questions.

Adrian sat behind the glass.

The powerful man who once controlled everything now wore a prison uniform.

But somehow...

He still looked confident.

"You came."

Rafael sat down.

"Why?"

Adrian smiled.

"Straight to the point."

"Why did you kill my father?"

The smile disappeared slightly.

"Elena told you."

"Answer."

A long silence.

Then Adrian leaned closer.

"Because nobody else would."

Rafael stared.

"You expect me to thank you?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Adrian looked tired.

"Understanding."

"Understanding what?"

"That everything I did was because I saw what he was creating."

A pause.

"You."

Rafael looked away.

"I became nothing like him."

Adrian smiled sadly.

"Did you?"

The question stayed.

"Look at yourself, Rafael."

"You built an empire."

"You made people fear your name."

"You punished enemies without hesitation."

A pause.

"You became exactly what he wanted."

Rafael's hands tightened.

Because the terrifying part was...

Some of it was true.

"But I changed."

Adrian nodded.

"Because of the boy."

A silence.

"You were right about one thing."

Rafael looked at him.

"What?"

"Family changes people."

Adrian looked down.

"But I learned that too late."

For the first time, Rafael saw something behind Adrian's arrogance.

Not innocence.

Never that.

But regret.

"You could have told me."

Adrian looked up.

"Would you have believed me?"

Rafael had no answer.

Because years ago?

No.

He would have chosen his father.

He would have chosen the empire.

He would have chosen the version of reality that hurt less.

When Rafael returned home, Nate was awake.

The boy sat on the stairs.

"You went somewhere."

"Yes."

"Are you okay?"

Rafael stopped.

Because nobody asked him that.

Not honestly.

Not without wanting something.

"I don't know."

Nate nodded.

"Mom says that's okay."

Rafael sat beside him.

"Your mom says many wise things."

"She says people can be good and bad at the same time."

Rafael looked at him.

"Do you believe that?"

Nate nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because my dad was good."

A pause.

"But he made mistakes."

Rafael looked toward the dark hallway.

A child understood something adults spent their entire lives avoiding.

Nobody was only one thing.

Not his father.

Not Adrian.

Not even Rafael.

The next morning, Rafael made his final decision.

He would dismantle the empire.

Not abandon it.

Not destroy it.

Transform it.

The businesses built on fear would become legitimate.

The people who suffered would be compensated.

The secrets would be exposed.

The cycle would end.

Diego looked shocked.

"Boss... you know this could destroy everything."

Rafael nodded.

"I know."

"Then why do it?"

Rafael looked at a photograph.

A picture of Nate laughing.

"Because I spent my whole life proving I wasn't my father."

A pause.

"And I almost became him."

That day, Rafael De Santos stopped being the king everyone feared.

And became something much harder.

A man who had to live with the truth.

But the final battle was not over.

Because while Rafael was trying to destroy the sins of the past...

Someone else was preparing to reveal the last secret.

The one even Elena had hidden.

The one that would change Nate's life forever.

May you like

The truth about who his mother really was.
