Chapter 10 – The Auction

Chapter 10 – The Auction
The fire at the Harrison mansion had barely been extinguished when another storm began.
Not one of wind or rain.
One of truth.
For three years, Adrian Harrison had believed he had lost everything.
Now he knew something far worse.
His wife had survived.
His son had been stolen.
And somewhere, the people responsible were still watching.
A Signal in the Mountains
Hundreds of miles away, hidden deep within the Blue Ridge Mountains, an old stone cabin stood surrounded by towering pines.
Inside, a silver-haired man closed his laptop.
The blinking notification on the screen had disappeared.
LOCATION CONFIRMED.
He turned toward the seven-year-old boy sitting cross-legged on the floor.
The child was carefully fitting together a wooden puzzle of the solar system.
"You finished it again?"
The boy smiled proudly.
"I got faster."
The old man chuckled.
"I've noticed."
The child had bright blue eyes.
Dark brown hair.
And a tiny crescent-shaped birthmark behind his left ear.
Exactly where Adrian Harrison's father had carried the same mark.
The old man knelt beside him.
"Elliot."
"Yes, Grandpa?"
"We may have visitors soon."
The boy tilted his head.
"My teacher says visitors bring presents."
The old man smiled sadly.
"Sometimes..."
"They bring the truth."
The Photograph
Back at the Harrison mansion, Detective Pierce carefully examined every document recovered from the hidden room.
Among faded receipts and old photographs, one envelope stood out.
It contained an invitation.
Heavy cream-colored paper.
Gold lettering.
At first glance, it seemed ordinary.
Until Adrian read the title.
Blackwood Charity Auction
Date: Three years ago.
Location: Blackwood Manor.
Anna frowned.
"I've been there."
Everyone looked at her.
"You remember?"
She closed her eyes.
"I didn't attend the auction."
"But..."
She inhaled sharply.
"I followed Victoria."
Blackwood Manor
The memory unfolded piece by piece.
Sophia had grown suspicious after discovering strange financial transfers connected to the Harrison Foundation.
Victoria had insisted she was attending a charity auction alone.
Instead...
Sophia secretly followed her.
Blackwood Manor stood on a secluded estate overlooking a private lake.
Expensive cars lined the entrance.
Men in tailored suits entered carrying briefcases.
None of them looked like charity donors.
Sophia remembered hiding behind a stone column.
Watching through a partially opened ballroom door.
People weren't bidding on paintings.
Or jewelry.
Or antiques.
They were bidding on files.
Corporate secrets.
Forged identities.
Stolen technology.
The auction wasn't raising money.
It was selling crimes.
Then...
Victoria disappeared into a private office upstairs.
Sophia quietly followed.
She never reached the door.
Someone grabbed her from behind.
Everything went black.
The Hidden Ledger
Thomas interrupted the silence.
"I know Blackwood Manor."
Adrian turned toward him.
"My father attended several events there."
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
"He always said..."
"...real business happened after the guests left."
Detective Pierce immediately ordered a search warrant.
"If Blackwood Manor still exists..."
"We're going."
Victoria's Last Card
Meanwhile, Victoria sat alone in a holding cell at the county detention center.
She had been arrested for fraud, pending further investigation.
She remained surprisingly calm.
The steel door opened.
Her attorney entered.
"You have one visitor."
"I didn't ask for one."
"He insisted."
A tall man wearing a charcoal overcoat stepped inside after the lawyer left.
Victor Kane.
Victoria glared at him.
"You let them catch me."
Victor remained expressionless.
"You were becoming a liability."
She laughed bitterly.
"And what are you now?"
He leaned closer.
"A survivor."
Victoria lowered her voice.
"They know about Elliot."
Victor smiled.
"No."
"They only know he exists."
"They still don't know where."
Victoria studied his face.
Then whispered,
"You've already moved him."
Victor didn't answer.
His silence was enough.
Emma's Dream
That night, Emma climbed into Anna's bed again.
"Mommy?"
Anna smiled softly.
"What is it?"
"I had a dream."
"What happened?"
Emma hugged her stuffed rabbit.
"I saw a little boy."
Anna's heart skipped.
"What did he look like?"
"He looked like Daddy."
She giggled.
"But smaller."
Anna gently brushed Emma's curls aside.
"What was he doing?"
"He was waiting."
"Where?"
Emma frowned as though trying to remember.
"In a house."
"With lots of trees."
Anna exchanged a glance with Adrian.
Neither spoke.
But both thought the same thing.
Mountains.
The Auction House
The following afternoon, Adrian, Pierce, Thomas, and a tactical police unit arrived at Blackwood Manor.
The estate appeared abandoned.
Weeds covered the stone driveway.
Broken windows overlooked the empty lake.
Inside...
Dust coated everything.
The grand ballroom still held rows of auction chairs.
A stage.
An auctioneer's podium.
Pierce swept his flashlight across the room.
"It closed shortly after the yacht explosion."
Thomas stopped near the stage.
"There."
A loose floorboard.
Officers pried it open.
Beneath lay a steel lockbox.
Inside were dozens of leather-bound ledgers.
Each contained handwritten records of illegal transactions dating back nearly twenty years.
Names.
Payments.
Political bribes.
Corporate espionage.
Then Adrian spotted a familiar signature.
Victoria Langford.
Another.
Victor Kane.
Then one entry froze everyone.
Special Transfer
Recipient: Daniel Cross
Package: Infant Male
Status: Delivered
No name.
Only a date.
The same day Dr. Morris said Sophia's son had disappeared.
The Mask Falls
Detective Pierce slowly closed the ledger.
"This wasn't just kidnapping."
He looked around the silent ballroom.
"This was an organization."
Adrian's expression darkened.
"How big?"
Pierce sighed.
"Big enough to erase people."
"Forge deaths."
"Buy officials."
"And hide children."
Thomas whispered,
"Your father knew."
Adrian looked at him sharply.
"What?"
Thomas hesitated.
"I don't know how much."
"But he attended these auctions."
The room suddenly felt much colder.
Could his own father have unknowingly financed the people who destroyed his family?
Or...
Had he known exactly what was happening?
A New Clue
As officers packed the ledgers into evidence boxes, one young detective discovered a hidden envelope wedged inside the auction podium.
"Detective!"
Pierce walked over.
"What did you find?"
The envelope contained only one photograph.
It showed a little boy around four years old standing beside a lake.
On the back, written in neat handwriting, were six chilling words.
He asks about his mother daily.
Anna stared at the photograph.
Her legs nearly gave out.
Without hesitation, she reached for it.
"My son..."
Tears streamed down her face.
"I know that's him."
Adrian gently wrapped an arm around her.
"We're close."
Pierce nodded.
"Closer than ever."
But before anyone could celebrate, another officer ran into the ballroom.
"Detective!"
"We've got a problem."
"What happened?"
The young officer held up a satellite phone recovered from the manor's basement.
"It just received a message."
Pierce took the device.
The screen displayed only a single sentence.
The auction has reopened.
Beneath it appeared a time.
Tomorrow.
And a location.
May you like
One that made Adrian's blood run cold.
Harrison Mansion.
