Chapter 7 – The Maid Remembers

Chapter 7 – The Maid Remembers

The words lingered in the nursery long after Anna whispered them.

"We had a son."

No one moved.

The grandfather clock in the hallway ticked steadily, each second sounding louder than the last.

Adrian stared at the woman standing before him.

Three years.

Three years believing he had lost his wife.

Now she remembered not only their life together...

But the child they had never met.

His voice cracked.

"A son?"

Anna closed her eyes.

"I... I don't know everything."

"The memories come in pieces."

"They're like broken glass."

"I can pick up one piece..."

"...but the others still cut me."

Emma looked up at her.

"Do I have a baby brother?"

Anna couldn't answer.

She simply pulled the little girl into her arms.

For reasons she couldn't explain, holding Emma made the pain easier to bear.

The Safe

After leaving the nursery, Adrian walked directly to his private office.

There was one place he hadn't opened since Sophia's memorial service.

An antique wall safe hidden behind a painting.

He entered the combination with trembling fingers.

Inside were documents, family photographs, and a small velvet box.

He opened it.

A pair of tiny silver baby shoes.

Sophia had bought them the day they learned she was pregnant again.

She had laughed when Adrian teased her.

"The baby's only the size of a strawberry."

"So?"

She smiled.

"I like being prepared."

He had forgotten about them.

Or perhaps...

He had forced himself to forget.

Now, the tiny shoes felt heavier than anything he had ever held.

Another Memory

That afternoon, Anna wandered into the mansion's greenhouse.

The scent of fresh lavender drifted through the warm air.

She paused beside a row of white roses.

Without thinking, she reached down and trimmed a dying bloom.

Claire watched quietly.

"You knew exactly where the gardening scissors were."

Anna frowned.

"I did?"

"They've always been kept in that drawer."

Anna looked toward the old wooden cabinet.

"I didn't even think."

Claire smiled sadly.

"Because you used to spend hours here."

Anna gently touched one of the roses.

Then another memory surfaced.

Sophia laughed as she pressed a flower into Adrian's jacket pocket.

"You'll carry part of home with you."

Adrian smiled.

"Then I won't miss you quite as much."

The memory vanished.

Anna whispered,

"I planted these."

Claire nodded.

"Every single one."

Detective Pierce Reopens the Case

Meanwhile, Detective Alan Pierce sat in the county archives surrounded by dusty evidence boxes.

He reopened the Harrison file for the first time in three years.

Something bothered him.

The original investigation had moved too quickly.

Too many questions had been left unanswered.

He carefully examined the recovered evidence inventory.

Then frowned.

"Where's the black box?"

His assistant looked confused.

"What black box?"

"The yacht's navigation recorder."

"It should be listed here."

It wasn't.

Someone had removed it from evidence.

Years ago.

Without leaving a signature.

Pierce immediately picked up the phone.

"I need every officer who worked that case."

"And I need them today."

Victoria Loses Control

Victoria stood before her bedroom mirror.

She barely recognized the woman staring back.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes.

Her hands wouldn't stop shaking.

For three years, she had controlled every situation.

Every lie.

Every appearance.

Now...

The cracks were spreading too fast.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

Victor Kane entered without waiting for permission.

His expensive gray suit looked immaculate.

Unlike his expression.

"You've made too many mistakes."

Victoria glared at him.

"I wasn't expecting her to survive."

"Neither was I."

He walked to the window.

"But she's remembering."

Victoria lowered her voice.

"What if she remembers everything?"

Victor slowly turned.

"Then we make sure no one believes her."

The First Nightmare

That night, Anna woke screaming.

"No!"

She sat upright, drenched in sweat.

Emma, who had insisted on sleeping in the same room, immediately climbed into the bed.

"Mommy?"

Anna's breathing was frantic.

"I saw it."

"Saw what?"

"There was fire."

She squeezed her eyes shut.

"The yacht."

Claire hurried into the room.

"So you remember?"

Anna nodded weakly.

"It wasn't an accident."

She covered her face with trembling hands.

"I remember Victoria."

The Night Everything Changed

The memory returned with terrifying clarity.

Three years earlier...

Sophia had stood alone on the yacht's upper deck.

Emma was already asleep below.

The ocean was calm.

She heard footsteps behind her.

She smiled.

"I thought Adrian wasn't coming until morning."

No answer.

She turned.

Victoria stood there.

Wearing a black coat.

Her expression was cold.

"Sophia."

Sophia frowned.

"What are you doing here?"

Victoria stepped closer.

"We need to talk."

"About what?"

"The Harrison fortune."

Sophia laughed nervously.

"I don't understand."

"You will."

Victoria pulled an envelope from her handbag.

Inside were copies of financial documents.

Forged signatures.

Fraudulent transfers.

Sophia stared in disbelief.

"What is this?"

"The future."

Sophia looked up.

"I'd never sign these."

"I know."

Victoria smiled.

"That's why you won't be around to refuse."

Sophia slowly backed away.

"Victoria..."

"What are you talking about?"

Victoria's smile disappeared.

"I loved Adrian long before you married him."

Sophia's heart pounded.

"This is insane."

"No."

Victoria whispered.

"It's patient."

"I waited years."

"I earned his trust."

"I became part of his life."

"And now..."

She looked toward the sleeping quarters below.

"You're standing in my way."

Sophia turned to run.

Victoria grabbed her arm.

The two women struggled.

Sophia tried to scream.

Victoria shoved her violently.

Sophia struck the back of her head against the metal railing.

Pain exploded through her skull.

She fell to her knees.

Everything blurred.

She heard Victoria's voice.

"I'm sorry."

"But I want your life."

Then...

Another figure emerged from the shadows.

A man.

Tall.

Wearing black gloves.

Sophia couldn't see his face.

He carried a small metal case.

Victoria stepped aside.

The man disappeared into the engine room.

Seconds later—

A deafening explosion tore through the yacht.

Fire erupted everywhere.

The force threw Sophia over the railing.

She hit the freezing water below.

The last thing she remembered...

Was trying to swim back.

Toward Emma.

Then darkness.

The Truth Comes Out

Anna gasped and grabbed Adrian's arm.

"It was her."

Tears streamed down her face.

"Victoria pushed me."

The room fell silent.

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Are you certain?"

Anna looked directly into his eyes.

"I remember her face."

"I remember every word."

"She said..."

Anna struggled to breathe.

"'I want your life.'"

Adrian closed his eyes.

Every doubt disappeared.

This wasn't grief.

This wasn't confusion.

This was murder.

Or at least...

An attempt.

Emma's Question

The next morning, Emma climbed onto Adrian's lap during breakfast.

"Daddy?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"If Mommy came back..."

"Why didn't she come home sooner?"

Adrian held his daughter a little tighter.

"Because someone tried to take her away from us."

Emma frowned.

"Are they still here?"

Adrian looked across the dining room.

Victoria's chair sat empty.

For the first time in three years...

She hadn't come to breakfast.

His voice became quiet.

"I think..."

"They've been closer than we ever imagined."

The Missing Flight

Detective Pierce called just before noon.

"I found something."

Adrian immediately drove to the police station.

Pierce slid an old airline manifest across the desk.

"Victoria claimed she attended a charity gala in Manhattan the night of the explosion."

"I remember."

Pierce pointed to a passenger list.

"She didn't."

Adrian leaned closer.

"What is this?"

"A private helicopter."

"Destination?"

"The marina where your yacht departed."

Departure time:

10:42 p.m.

Arrival:

11:18 p.m.

Exactly one hour before the explosion.

Adrian slowly looked up.

"She lied."

Pierce nodded grimly.

"And someone spent three years making sure no one checked."

A Voice From the Past

Late that evening, Anna stood alone on the mansion's balcony overlooking the ocean.

The waves crashed gently against the distant shore.

She closed her eyes.

More memories came.

Not painful ones.

Happy ones.

Adrian teaching Emma to walk.

Sunday pancakes.

Christmas mornings.

The first time he had told her he loved her.

She smiled through her tears.

"I'm coming back."

She whispered the words to herself.

"I'm finally coming back."

Behind her, hidden in the darkness of the garden, someone quietly watched through binoculars.

A camera shutter clicked once.

Then again.

The mysterious figure lowered the lens and spoke into a phone.

"She remembers Victoria."

A cold voice answered.

"Then the next phase begins tonight."

The line went dead.

The watcher disappeared into the darkness.

Completely unaware...

That Thomas, standing behind the hedge with years of military training behind him, had seen everything.

And for the first time since Sophia vanished...

He recognized the face hiding beneath the hood.

His own expression turned pale as he whispered,

May you like

"It can't be..."

"He's supposed to be dead."
