Chapter 11 – The Courtroom

Chapter 11 – The Courtroom
The message on the satellite phone changed everything.
The auction has reopened.
Tomorrow.
Location: Harrison Mansion.
For a long moment, no one spoke.
Detective Alan Pierce stared at the glowing screen before carefully slipping the phone into an evidence bag.
"This isn't an invitation," he said quietly.
"It's a challenge."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"No."
"They want me to panic."
Pierce looked at him.
"What are you going to do?"
Adrian's answer came without hesitation.
"I'm going to make sure they walk into a trap."
Emergency Hearing
By sunrise, the case had become too large for local authorities.
The Attorney General's Office had taken control.
Because the allegations now included attempted murder, kidnapping, identity fraud, financial crimes, and corruption involving public officials, the court granted an emergency hearing to authorize a full criminal investigation and immediate protective orders.
Television vans crowded outside the courthouse.
Reporters shouted questions as black SUVs pulled into the underground entrance.
"Cameras down!" security officers ordered.
"No photographs of the child!"
Emma remained hidden from the media, escorted through a private entrance by Claire and Thomas.
Anna walked beside Adrian.
For the first time in three years, she wasn't wearing a housekeeper's uniform.
She wore a simple navy dress Claire had chosen for her.
No expensive jewelry.
No designer labels.
Only the silver bracelet Adrian had given her years ago.
As they entered the courthouse, whispers spread through the hallway.
"That's Sophia Harrison..."
"I thought she died."
"She's alive..."
Facing Victoria Again
Victoria Langford entered the courtroom in handcuffs.
Gone were the elegant gowns and perfectly styled hair.
She wore a plain gray detention uniform.
Yet she still walked with practiced confidence.
When she saw Anna, a faint smile crossed her lips.
"So..."
"You finally remembered."
Anna met her gaze without fear.
"I remembered enough."
Victoria tilted her head.
"Not everything."
"You still don't know where your son is."
Adrian stepped between them.
"You'll tell us."
Victoria laughed softly.
"You still believe I'm the one making decisions."
Those words caught Detective Pierce's attention.
He wrote a note in his notebook.
Not the leader.
Judge Eleanor Whitmore
The courtroom doors opened.
"All rise."
Judge Eleanor Whitmore entered and took her seat.
"This hearing concerns the matter of the State versus Victoria Langford."
She looked toward the prosecution.
"Proceed."
Assistant Attorney Daniel Brooks stood.
"Your Honor, we request continued detention without bail."
"The defendant presents an extreme flight risk."
"And we believe additional victims remain in danger."
Victoria's attorney immediately objected.
"The prosecution has produced speculation, not proof."
Judge Whitmore turned toward the witness stand.
"Call your first witness."
Adrian Testifies
Adrian took the oath.
His voice remained steady despite the cameras.
He described the yacht explosion.
Sophia's presumed death.
The DNA results.
Anna's memory loss.
The forged financial records.
The hidden nursery.
The evidence recovered at Blackwood Manor.
When he finished, the courtroom had fallen completely silent.
The prosecutor asked one final question.
"Mr. Harrison..."
"Do you believe the defendant attempted to murder your wife?"
Adrian looked directly at Victoria.
"Yes."
"And I believe she stole my son."
Victoria's expression remained unreadable.
Anna Takes the Stand
The courtroom watched as Anna slowly approached the witness stand.
She placed one trembling hand on the Bible.
"I swear to tell the truth."
The prosecutor spoke gently.
"Please tell the court your name."
Anna hesitated only briefly.
"My name..."
She took a deep breath.
"...is Sophia Harrison."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Hearing her say those words felt like the first sunrise after years of darkness.
Sophia described waking up on a distant shore with no memories.
Living under the name Anna Bennett.
Working as a housekeeper.
Emma recognizing her at the engagement party.
Then...
She described the night aboard the yacht.
Victoria's threats.
The struggle.
The explosion.
When she reached the part about the hospital...
Her voice broke.
"I held my son."
She wiped away tears.
"I remember his tiny fingers."
"I remember singing to him."
"And when I woke up..."
"He was gone."
Many people in the gallery quietly wiped away tears.
Even several jurors struggled to remain composed.
The Defense Strikes Back
Victoria's attorney rose.
"Mrs. Harrison..."
"You've admitted suffering severe memory loss."
"Yes."
"You've admitted experiencing fragmented memories."
"Yes."
"So isn't it possible..."
"...that you've confused dreams with reality?"
The courtroom became silent.
Sophia lowered her eyes.
For a moment, doubt crept into her heart.
Then she reached into her purse.
"I brought something."
She held up the leather journal recovered from the nursery.
"The handwriting is mine."
"The entries were written before the explosion."
She opened to one page.
Victoria keeps asking strange questions about the baby.
Another page.
If anything happens to me, Adrian must never trust her.
The defense attorney's face tightened.
The journal had been written long before Sophia lost her memory.
It couldn't have been invented afterward.
A Surprise Witness
The prosecutor smiled.
"The State calls Dr. Evelyn Morris."
Gasps filled the courtroom.
Dr. Morris walked slowly to the witness stand.
Under oath, she confessed everything.
She confirmed Sophia's pregnancy.
The birth of a healthy baby boy.
The forged medical records.
The threats against her family.
The false death certificate.
The courtroom erupted in whispers.
Judge Whitmore struck her gavel.
"Order!"
"Order in the court!"
Dr. Morris then produced the original hospital records.
Including the newborn's footprints.
The prosecutor placed them beside Emma's birth records.
The family resemblance was undeniable.
Victoria Breaks
The prosecutor turned toward Victoria.
"Would you like to explain these records?"
Victoria remained silent.
"You were present at the hospital."
Silence.
"You authorized Victor Kane's access."
Silence.
Then...
Unexpectedly...
Victoria began laughing.
Not politely.
Not nervously.
Wildly.
Almost hysterically.
"You think this is over?"
The courtroom froze.
She slowly stood despite her attorney's attempts to stop her.
"You've spent three years looking at the wrong villain."
She looked directly at Adrian.
"You still don't understand who owns the auction."
The prosecutor demanded,
"Who?"
Victoria smiled.
"You'll never reach him."
"Because..."
Before she could finish—
A loud crack echoed through the courtroom.
The windows shattered.
Panic erupted.
"Everyone down!"
Security agents rushed toward the judge.
Another shot rang out.
A sniper.
Chaos spread through the courtroom as deputies shielded civilians behind benches.
Adrian threw himself over Sophia.
Pierce drew his weapon.
"Lock the building!"
The sniper fired once more.
The bullet wasn't aimed at Adrian.
Or Sophia.
It struck Victoria squarely in the shoulder.
She screamed and collapsed to the floor.
The shooter hadn't come to free her.
He had come to silence her.
As deputies secured the room, Victoria grabbed Adrian's sleeve with blood-covered fingers.
Her breathing became ragged.
With the last of her strength, she whispered four words:
"Trust... no one... upstairs."
Then her eyes rolled back.
She lost consciousness.
Across the street, the sniper disappeared into the crowd before police could reach the rooftop.
But Detective Pierce wasn't watching the fleeing assassin.
He was staring at Victoria's final warning.
Trust no one upstairs.
He slowly looked toward the courthouse's upper floors...
Where the offices of the Attorney General's special task force were located.

For the first time, he realized the conspiracy might reach far beyond Victor Kane.
Someone inside the justice system itself might have been protecting the truth all along.
