Chapter 8 – The Billionaire Starts Fighting Back

Chapter 8 – The Billionaire Starts Fighting Back
The words Thomas whispered refused to leave Adrian's mind.
"He's supposed to be dead."
The old butler had spent more than thirty years protecting the Harrison family. He wasn't a man who frightened easily.
Yet for the first time since Sophia's return, genuine fear filled his eyes.
Adrian closed the study door behind them.
"Tell me exactly what you saw."
Thomas loosened his tie with trembling fingers.
"The man watching the guest house..."
"I know him."
Adrian leaned forward.
"Who is he?"
Thomas hesitated.
"A man named Daniel Cross."
The name meant nothing to Adrian.
Thomas continued.
"He used to work private security."
"Then he disappeared nearly four years ago."
"The police declared him dead after a warehouse fire."
Adrian frowned.
"And you're certain?"
"I served in the military with him."
"I'd recognize his face anywhere."
A chill settled over the room.
If Daniel Cross was alive...
How many other lies had been carefully buried over the past three years?
No More Waiting
Adrian had spent three years grieving.
Three years trusting the wrong people.
Three years believing official reports without questioning them.
Not anymore.
He walked into the executive boardroom of Harrison Industries the following morning.
Every director immediately stood.
The atmosphere felt different.
His eyes were cold.
Focused.
Purposeful.
"Ladies and gentlemen."
"I'll keep this brief."
"I'll be taking an indefinite leave from public appearances."
Several directors exchanged confused glances.
"My priorities have changed."
One board member cautiously asked,
"Is this because of the engagement announcement?"
Adrian looked directly at him.
"There won't be an engagement."
The room became silent.
He removed the diamond engagement ring from his pocket.
Placed it on the polished conference table.
"The wedding is canceled."
Victoria Walks In
The boardroom doors suddenly opened.
Victoria entered wearing an elegant navy suit.
She forced a pleasant smile.
"Adrian."
"I've been trying to reach you."
He didn't return the smile.
"This meeting is private."
She glanced around the room.
"What is everyone talking about?"
Adrian picked up the ring.
Walked toward her.
For a brief second...
Victoria believed he had changed his mind.
Instead...
He placed the ring into her hand.
"It's over."
Her smile disappeared.
"What?"
"Our engagement."
"You can't be serious."
"I've never been more serious."
Victoria lowered her voice.
"This isn't the place."
"No."
Adrian replied calmly.
"It should've ended long before today."
She looked around desperately.
"You're embarrassing me."
His expression never changed.
"You should get used to that feeling."
Without another word, he walked past her and left the room.
The directors sat in stunned silence.
For the first time, Victoria realized...
She had lost control of the narrative.
A House Divided
By noon, rumors had spread through the mansion.
The engagement had been canceled.
Staff whispered in the hallways.
No one knew why.
Claire found Victoria angrily throwing clothes into expensive suitcases.
"So it's true."
Victoria didn't look up.
"I suppose you're happy."
Claire folded her arms.
"I never wanted Adrian to marry someone he didn't love."
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"He loved me."
Claire met her gaze.
"No."
"He needed someone while he was grieving."
"That's not the same thing."
Victoria slammed a drawer shut.
"You've always hated me."
Claire shook her head.
"I welcomed you."
"I defended you."
"I even apologized for doubting you."
She stepped closer.
"But if you've hurt my brother..."
Her voice became dangerously quiet.
"I'll make sure you answer for it."
For a split second...
Fear flashed across Victoria's face.
The Financial Audit
Rebecca Lawson, Harrison Industries' chief legal counsel, arrived that afternoon carrying six thick binders.
"You asked for every financial record connected to Victoria."
Adrian nodded.
"What did you find?"
Rebecca opened the first binder.
"Nothing unusual at first."
"But six months after Sophia disappeared..."
She slid several documents across the desk.
"Large consulting payments began leaving the Harrison Foundation."
"To whom?"
"Several shell companies."
"Amount?"
"Nearly twelve million dollars over three years."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"Who approved them?"
Rebecca hesitated.
"The authorization carried your electronic signature."
"I never signed these."
"I know."
She pushed another document toward him.
"The signatures were forged."
Anna Remembers the Office
Meanwhile, Anna wandered into Adrian's private office for the first time.
Everything felt strangely familiar.
Bookshelves.
The leather chair.
The antique globe.
She slowly approached the desk.
Her fingers brushed across its polished surface.
Another memory appeared.
Sophia laughing as she placed a family photograph beside Adrian's computer.
"You spend more time here than at home."
Adrian smiled.
"Then now home's here too."
Anna opened the top drawer instinctively.
Inside lay an old fountain pen.
Without thinking, she uncapped it.
Signed a blank sheet of paper.
Sophia Harrison.
She froze.
Claire, standing beside her, stared at the signature.
Every letter.
Every curve.
Perfect.
Exactly the same handwriting.
Anna looked horrified.
"I didn't mean to..."
"You remembered."
Claire whispered.
"You remembered your own name."
Anna stared at the paper.
Then whispered softly,
"Sophia..."
For the first time...
The name didn't feel unfamiliar.
It felt like coming home.
Emma's Treasure Box
That evening, Emma ran into the study carrying a tiny wooden box.
"Daddy!"
"Look what I found!"
Adrian smiled.
"What is it?"
"My treasure box."
Inside were dozens of childhood keepsakes.
Colorful rocks.
Tiny seashells.
Birthday cards.
Then...
One folded photograph.
Emma proudly unfolded it.
It showed Sophia holding baby Emma in the mansion garden.
On the back, written in elegant handwriting, were the words:
No matter what happens...
Mommy will always find you.
Anna slowly took the photograph.
Her tears fell onto the faded ink.
"I wrote this."
She looked at Adrian.
"I remember writing it."
He couldn't speak.
Instead...
He reached for her hand.
Their fingers touched for the first time in over three years.
Neither of them pulled away.
The Hidden Account
Rebecca interrupted the quiet moment.
"I found something else."
She placed a flash drive on Adrian's desk.
"This came from one of the shell companies."
"What is it?"
"A backup accounting file."
Adrian inserted it into his computer.
Thousands of transactions appeared.
Most were meaningless.
Until Rebecca pointed at one payment.
Cross Security Solutions
Recipient:
Daniel Cross
Adrian's heartbeat quickened.
Thomas looked over his shoulder.
"The man from last night."
Rebecca nodded.
"The payments stopped exactly three years ago."
Then another transaction caught Adrian's eye.
Recipient:
Victor Kane Investigations
Amount:
Five million dollars.
Every payment had been approved...
By Victoria Langford.
A Desperate Escape
Upstairs, Victoria quietly packed the last of her belongings.
She knew she couldn't stay.
Not another night.
She opened the hidden compartment beneath her wardrobe.
Inside lay a passport under another name.
Several bundles of cash.
A handgun.
And a one-way airline ticket to Argentina.
She zipped the suitcase shut.
Walked toward the back staircase.
Almost made it to the garage.
"Leaving so soon?"
Victoria froze.
Adrian stood at the bottom of the stairs.
Rebecca beside him.
Thomas behind him.
Two Harrison security officers blocked the front entrance.
Victoria forced a smile.
"I thought everyone needed a little space."
Adrian slowly held up the forged financial records.
"Twelve million dollars."
She said nothing.
Then he held up another document.
"The helicopter manifest."
Still silence.
Finally...
He placed the DNA report between them.
Emma and Anna appeared in the hallway above.
Victoria looked up.
Anna met her eyes.
A memory flashed across Anna's mind.
Victoria's cold smile.
The push.
The explosion.
Anna whispered,
"You tried to kill me."
Victoria's face turned white.
For several endless seconds...
No one moved.
Then Victoria laughed.
Softly at first.
Then louder.
The elegant mask she had worn for years finally cracked.
"You still don't remember everything."
Her smile became chilling.
"No..."
"You only remember the beginning."
She looked directly at Anna.
"If you ever remember how that night really ended..."
"You'll wish you'd stayed at the bottom of the ocean."
Before anyone could stop her, Victoria pulled a small remote from her coat pocket.
She pressed the button.
Somewhere deep beneath the mansion...
A deafening explosion echoed through the walls.
The lights flickered.
Smoke began rising from the west wing.
May you like
And from inside the hidden nursery...
A baby's music box suddenly started playing by itself.
