Chapter 12 – The Monster Behind Victoria

Chapter 12 – The Monster Behind Victoria
The courtroom erupted into chaos.
Deputies rushed to shield the judge.
Reporters crawled beneath benches.
Shattered glass covered the marble floor.
Victoria Langford lay bleeding, her gray prison uniform stained crimson.
Adrian wrapped one arm around Sophia while keeping Emma hidden behind the witness stand.
"Stay down!" Detective Alan Pierce shouted.
The courthouse went into immediate lockdown.
Every exit was sealed.
Every officer was searching for the sniper.
But deep inside, Pierce already knew the truth.
The shooter hadn't come to rescue Victoria.
He had come to make sure she never talked again.
"She Can't Die"
Paramedics wheeled Victoria through the courthouse hallway.
Her pulse was weak.
A trauma surgeon applied pressure to the gunshot wound.
"Blood pressure is dropping!"
"Move!"
As the ambulance doors closed, Victoria's eyes fluttered open for only a second.
She grabbed the doctor's wrist.
In a raspy whisper, she said,
"He's... watching..."
Before the doctor could ask who she meant, she lost consciousness again.
The Warning
Inside a secure conference room, Detective Pierce spread photographs across a large table.
The yacht explosion.
Blackwood Manor.
The hidden nursery.
The forged hospital records.
Daniel Cross.
Victor Kane.
Victoria.
Every clue pointed toward the same conclusion.
"This was never about money."
Rebecca Lawson looked up.
"Then what was it about?"
Pierce folded his arms.
"Power."
Thomas nodded slowly.
"They built an organization."
"An invisible one."
Rebecca frowned.
"Who leads it?"
No one answered.
Because none of them knew.
Until a young FBI analyst hurried into the room carrying a laptop.
"Detective."
"I found something."
The Symbol
The analyst projected dozens of documents onto a large screen.
Bank transfers.
Property records.
Corporate registrations.
Each seemed unrelated.
Until she enlarged one tiny detail.
A symbol.
A black crown with a serpent coiled around it.
Pierce immediately recognized it.
"I've seen this before."
Rebecca looked surprised.
"Where?"
"The Blackwood ledger."
She flipped through the evidence until she found the final page.
There it was.
The same symbol.
Stamped in black ink.
Below it...
Only two words.
The Chairman
Adrian looked at Pierce.
"You know him?"
Pierce slowly shook his head.
"No."
"But every investigation involving this symbol disappeared."
Victoria Wakes
Late that evening, Victoria regained consciousness under heavy police guard.
Her hospital room was surrounded by armed officers.
Adrian entered alone.
She looked exhausted.
Pale.
Broken.
"You came."
"I need answers."
Victoria laughed weakly.
"You still think I'm the villain."
"Weren't you?"
"I was..."
She stared at the ceiling.
"...a servant."
Adrian remained silent.
Victoria slowly turned toward him.
"I loved you."
"I know."
"But love wasn't enough."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"The Chairman found me long before I found you."
The Recruitment
Seven years earlier...
Victoria had been drowning in debt.
Her father's business had collapsed.
Loan sharks threatened her family daily.
Then a stranger approached her after a charity dinner.
Elegant.
Calm.
Powerful.
"I can solve all your problems."
Victoria asked only one question.
"What do you want in return?"
The man smiled.
"Loyalty."
Within weeks...
Every debt disappeared.
Her father received expensive medical treatment.
A luxury apartment appeared in her name.
Then came her first assignment.
"Get close to Adrian Harrison."
She thought it was corporate espionage.
Nothing more.
Until years later...
The orders changed.
"Take His Family"
Victoria closed her eyes.
"I refused."
Adrian stared at her.
"What?"
"When they ordered me to kill Sophia..."
"I refused."
Sophia's expression hardened.
"You pushed me."
Victoria nodded through tears.
"I know."
"I was weak."
"But I wasn't the one who planned it."
"Who was?"
Victoria whispered,
"The Chairman."
"He said..."
"If Sophia lived..."
"...all of us would die."
The Photograph Nobody Saw
Victoria slowly reached beneath her hospital pillow.
The guards immediately raised their weapons.
"It's okay."
She removed a folded photograph.
Old.
Faded.
She handed it to Adrian.
It showed six people standing together inside Blackwood Manor.
Adrian immediately recognized Victor Kane.
Daniel Cross.
Victoria.
Then...
His breathing stopped.
Standing in the center...
Smiling confidently...
Was someone Adrian had trusted since childhood.
Richard Harrison.
His uncle.
His late father's younger brother.
Adrian whispered,
"No..."
Sophia looked at the photograph.
She felt the blood drain from her face.
"Uncle Richard?"
Victoria nodded.
"He isn't dead."
"What?"
"The funeral..."
"...was fake."
The Puppet Master
Detective Pierce arrived minutes later.
The moment he saw the photograph, he cursed under his breath.
"We've been chasing the wrong ghost."
Rebecca frowned.
"You know him?"
Pierce nodded.
"Richard Harrison disappeared eight years ago."
"Everyone believed he died in a private plane crash."
Thomas slowly shook his head.
"There was never a body."
Pierce looked toward Adrian.
"Just like Sophia."
Silence filled the room.
Richard Harrison.
Former board member.
Financial genius.
Adrian's favorite uncle.
The man who had taught him to play chess.
The man who had carried Emma around the gardens when she was a baby.
The man Adrian had cried over at another empty funeral.
Alive.
The Real Reason
Sophia stared at Victoria.
"Why?"
Victoria swallowed painfully.
"You remember the Harrison Trust?"
Adrian nodded.
"My grandfather's inheritance."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"Your second child changed everything."
Rebecca suddenly understood.
"My God..."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
Rebecca opened an old legal file.
"The Harrison family trust."
She flipped rapidly through the pages.
Then found the clause.
"If Adrian Harrison has more than one biological heir..."
"...control of the Harrison Foundation permanently leaves the extended Harrison family."
Everyone froze.
Richard Harrison had never been next in line.
Unless...
Adrian had only one child.
Sophia whispered,
"Elliot."
Rebecca nodded.
"The moment Elliot was born..."
"Richard lost everything."
The Monster Revealed
Victoria grabbed Adrian's arm with surprising strength.
"You have to find him."
"Richard?"
She shook her head.
"Elliot."
"Richard has spent seven years raising your son."
Sophia covered her mouth.
Victoria continued.
"He didn't want to kill the baby."
"He wanted to own him."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because one day..."
Victoria began coughing violently.
"...Elliot will inherit everything."
Another alarm suddenly sounded.
Not from the monitors.
From the hallway.
A nurse screamed.
A security officer shouted,
"He's here!"
Gunfire echoed outside the hospital room.
Pierce immediately drew his weapon.
"Protect the witness!"
The lights suddenly went dark.
Emergency power flickered on.
A shadow appeared beyond the frosted glass door.
Slow...
Calm...
Unhurried.
Then a familiar voice echoed through the hallway.
Deep.
Smooth.
Confident.
"You've all been searching for me."
The door handle slowly turned.
Adrian instinctively stepped in front of Sophia.
Thomas raised his pistol.
Detective Pierce aimed directly at the entrance.
The door opened.
An elderly man in an immaculate charcoal suit walked inside with a gentle smile, as though arriving for a family dinner instead of a siege.
His silver hair was perfectly combed.
His eyes settled on Adrian.
Then on Sophia.
Finally...
He smiled.
"Welcome back, Sophia."
Adrian's heart nearly stopped.
"Uncle Richard..."
Richard Harrison inclined his head politely.
"I've missed my family."
May you like
Behind him, dozens of armed men silently filled the hallway.
And somewhere far away, in a quiet mountain cabin, a seven-year-old boy looked out the window, unaware that the man he called "Grandpa" had just begun the final move in a game that had started long before he was born.
