Chapter 6 – The Hidden Nursery

Chapter 6 – The Hidden Nursery

The sound of shattered glass echoed through the mansion long after the intruder disappeared into the storm.

Security officers searched every inch of the estate.

Flashlights swept across the gardens.

Police cars lined the front gates.

Dogs tracked footprints through the rain.

Nothing.

Whoever had entered the mansion had vanished without leaving behind a single useful clue.

But one fact had become painfully clear.

Someone wasn't afraid of Anna remembering.

Someone was terrified of it.

No More Secrets

At sunrise, Adrian stood in the security control room, watching footage from every camera on the estate.

Thomas entered quietly.

"The police searched the grounds."

"And?"

"They found this."

He placed a small black object on the desk.

A broken earpiece.

Professional grade.

Not something an ordinary burglar would carry.

Detective Alan Pierce examined it carefully.

"This wasn't a robbery."

"We know."

Pierce looked at Adrian.

"Mr. Harrison..."

"The person who came here last night wasn't trying to steal anything."

"They were trying to silence someone."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Then they're already too late."

The Locked Door

Anna hadn't slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, fragments of memories crashed into her mind.

Cold seawater.

A baby's cry.

Victoria's smile.

Fire.

By morning, she couldn't bear the confusion any longer.

"I need to see that room again."

Claire immediately understood.

"The nursery."

Anna nodded.

"I don't know why."

"But every time I think about it..."

"My heart hurts."

Together, they walked through the quiet west wing.

The white door stood exactly where it had before.

This time, Adrian followed.

So did Emma, holding Anna's hand tightly.

Thomas remained several steps behind.

No one spoke.

Claire slowly turned the key.

The old lock clicked open.

Frozen in Time

The nursery looked untouched.

Sunlight filtered through lace curtains.

Dust floated gently in the air.

A white rocking chair stood beside the window.

Stuffed bears sat neatly on a shelf.

Tiny baby clothes still hung inside an open wardrobe.

It was as though someone had been waiting for a child who never came.

Anna stepped inside.

Her breathing slowed.

She reached out and ran her fingertips across the crib.

Suddenly—

A vivid flash.

Sophia—herself—standing in this very room.

Her hand resting on a swollen belly.

Smiling.

"You're going to love this room."

Adrian's voice answered behind her.

"Our little one will never want to leave."

The memory disappeared.

Anna staggered backward.

"My baby..."

She whispered.

"I was..."

She pressed a trembling hand against her stomach.

"I was pregnant."

The room fell silent.

Adrian stared at her.

"What did you say?"

Anna looked at him with frightened eyes.

"I remember..."

"I was expecting another baby."

Claire covered her mouth.

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

"I knew it."

The Secret They Kept

Three years earlier...

Only four people had known about Sophia's second pregnancy.

Sophia.

Adrian.

Dr. Evelyn Morris.

And Victoria.

The pregnancy had been only ten weeks along.

Sophia wanted to wait until the first trimester ended before announcing it.

"It's too early," she had told Adrian one evening as they painted the nursery together.

"What if something goes wrong?"

Adrian had kissed her forehead.

"Nothing's going to happen."

"We'll tell everyone after your next appointment."

She smiled.

"And Emma gets to be a big sister."

Neither of them imagined that appointment would never happen.

The Journal

Anna wandered toward the rocking chair.

Something caught her attention.

One of its legs seemed uneven.

She knelt.

Reached beneath the seat.

Her fingers brushed against something wrapped in faded blue cloth.

She slowly pulled it out.

A leather journal.

Covered in dust.

Claire gasped.

"I've never seen that before."

The initials on the cover read:

S.H.

Anna's hands shook as she opened the first page.

The handwriting was elegant.

Flowing.

Beautiful.

Her own.

March 18

Emma kissed my tummy today and said, "Baby."

Adrian laughed so hard he nearly cried.

Anna blinked rapidly.

Tears blurred the page.

She turned another.

March 27

Victoria says I should slow down.

She's been unusually interested in my doctor's appointments.

Another page.

April 2

I don't know why, but lately I feel like someone is watching me.

Adrian slowly lowered himself into the rocking chair.

His face had lost all color.

He had never seen this journal before.

Sophia had hidden it.

But why?

The Empty Crib

Emma climbed onto a small stool beside the crib.

She looked inside.

"Where's the baby?"

No one answered.

The innocent question filled the room with unbearable silence.

Anna closed the journal.

"I don't know."

She looked around the nursery.

"But..."

"I don't think my baby died."

Adrian looked up sharply.

"What makes you say that?"

She placed a hand over her heart.

"I would've remembered losing my child."

"This feels different."

"It feels..."

She searched desperately for the right word.

"Taken."

The word struck Adrian like a hammer.

Dr. Morris Returns

That afternoon, Adrian called Dr. Evelyn Morris.

Sophia's former obstetrician.

The elderly physician arrived within an hour.

When she entered the nursery, she immediately froze.

Her eyes filled with disbelief as she looked at Anna.

"Sophia..."

Anna looked confused.

"You know me?"

Dr. Morris slowly approached.

"I delivered Emma."

She reached out with trembling hands.

"I thought I'd buried you."

Anna whispered,

"I don't remember."

Dr. Morris gently nodded.

"I believe you."

She turned toward Adrian.

"I suppose you've discovered the pregnancy."

He nodded silently.

Dr. Morris closed her eyes.

"There is something I've regretted keeping secret."

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

"The day before the yacht explosion..."

"Sophia came to see me alone."

"Why?"

"She was frightened."

Anna looked up.

"Of what?"

Dr. Morris hesitated.

"She believed someone wanted to harm her baby."

The room became perfectly still.

A Name Never Forgotten

Dr. Morris searched her old medical folder.

"I kept copies."

Inside was an ultrasound image.

Tiny.

Grainy.

But unmistakable.

A ten-week-old fetus.

Dr. Morris smiled sadly.

"Sophia insisted on giving the baby a nickname."

Anna stared at the picture.

Without thinking...

She whispered,

"Little Star."

Everyone looked at her.

She covered her mouth.

"I..."

"I don't know why I said that."

Dr. Morris began crying.

"Because that's exactly what you called the baby."

Sophia had remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

Victoria Overhears

Standing outside the slightly open nursery door...

Victoria listened.

Every word.

Every memory.

Every painful piece returning to Anna.

Her breathing became shallow.

This couldn't continue.

If Anna remembered the pregnancy...

The next memory would be the birth.

And if she remembered the birth...

She would remember the child.

Victoria quietly stepped away from the door and walked toward her bedroom.

Once inside, she locked it.

Her hands trembled as she opened a hidden compartment beneath her jewelry box.

Inside lay an old disposable phone.

She hadn't touched it in three years.

She turned it on.

One unread message still remained.

Its date:

Three years ago.

She opened it.

The baby has been moved. No one will ever find him. Destroy this phone.

Victoria stared at the words until tears filled her eyes.

She had never destroyed it.

Perhaps because even she couldn't completely erase what she had done.

Or perhaps...

Because some part of her had always feared this day would come.

The phone rang.

An unknown number.

She answered immediately.

A cold male voice spoke only one sentence.

"She found the nursery."

Victoria swallowed hard.

"Yes."

A long silence followed.

Then—

"Then prepare for Phase Two."

The line went dead.

Victoria slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time in years...

She was no longer protecting a secret.

She was running out of time to keep it buried.

And somewhere deep inside the mansion, Anna stood in the forgotten nursery, gently holding the ultrasound picture against her heart.

A single tear rolled down her cheek as one final fragment surfaced.

She heard her own voice...

Soft.

Happy.

Filled with hope.

"Emma is going to have a little brother."

Anna's eyes flew open.

She looked at Adrian.

Her lips trembled.

"I think..."

May you like

She whispered.

"We had a son."
