Chapter 12 — The Man Alessandro Trusted

Chapter 12 — The Man Alessandro Trusted

The name stayed in Alessandro's mind long after Isabella stopped speaking.

Daniel Reyes.

His biological father.

A man everyone had told him was dead.

A man whose name had appeared in photographs, hospital records, secret files, and whispered conversations.

A man who had supposedly killed Aurelio.

A man who had supposedly died afterward.

And now Isabella was telling him that Daniel was alive.

Alessandro stared at her.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

“You told me Luca was my father.”

“Luca raised you.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

Isabella lowered her eyes.

“Daniel was your biological father.”

Alessandro felt something inside him collapse.

All his life, he had believed his identity was simple.

He was Alessandro Moretti.

Son of Luca Moretti.

Grandson of Aurelio.

He had built his entire understanding of himself around those names.

Now none of them seemed certain.

He looked toward Luca.

“Did you know?”

Luca stood in silence.

That was enough.

Alessandro's face hardened.

“You knew.”

Luca nodded.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since the night you were born.”

“You watched me call you Dad.”

“I know.”

“You watched me grow up.”

“I know.”

“And you never told me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Alessandro laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Luca looked wounded.

“I loved you.”

“That doesn't make the lie smaller.”

“No.”

“It makes it worse.”

Luca lowered his head.

“I know.”

Alessandro turned away.

For the first time since his mother had supposedly returned from the dead, he couldn't look at any member of his family.

They had all known something about him.

Everyone except him.

The next morning, Alessandro moved the children again.

This time, no one was told where.

Not Marco.

Not Rosa.

Not Sophia.

Not even Luca.

Only Alessandro knew the location.

It was an old property outside the city that had belonged to his father.

A modest stone house surrounded by trees.

No cameras.

No employees.

No visible security.

It was exactly the kind of place a powerful family would never think to search.

Emma sat by the fireplace.

Eliza was reading a book.

Nicholas was asleep on the sofa.

Alessandro watched them from the doorway.

Three children who had spent their entire lives being moved like pieces on a chessboard.

He had promised himself that would end.

He didn't know how.

But it would.

Sophia approached quietly.

“You should sleep.”

“I can't.”

“You haven't slept in two days.”

“I'll sleep when they're safe.”

“They're safer than they've ever been.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“Because you're here.”

He shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand more than you think.”

Sophia sat beside him.

“You're afraid.”

“Yes.”

“Of Daniel?”

“Of everyone.”

She was quiet for a moment.

Then she said:

“Do you trust me?”

Alessandro looked at her.

The question felt almost cruel.

“I'm trying to.”

Sophia nodded.

“That's fair.”

She stood.

Before she left, Alessandro asked:

“Sophia.”

She stopped.

“Did my father know about Emma?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know she was Daniel's daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

Sophia looked at him.

“Yes.”

“And you still protected her.”

“Because she was innocent.”

Alessandro nodded.

“Thank you.”

Sophia smiled faintly.

Then walked away.

Alessandro watched her disappear down the hallway.

He wanted to trust her.

He wanted to trust Luca.

He wanted to trust Mariana.

He wanted to believe that at least one person in his family had loved him without an agenda.

Then his phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A message contained only four words:

Ask Sophia about the hospital.

Alessandro stared at the screen.

His stomach tightened.

The hospital records were missing.

Every document related to the night Alessandro was born had disappeared.

But one thing remained.

A handwritten admission log.

Alessandro found it in an old archive box.

Three names were listed.

Mariana Moretti.

Luca Moretti.

Daniel Reyes.

Then, beneath them:

SOPHIA DELGADO — WITNESS.

Alessandro stopped.

Sophia had never told him she was there.

He called her.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

He returned to the house.

“Sophia?”

No response.

He searched the kitchen.

Empty.

The living room.

Empty.

The children's rooms.

Empty.

Then he heard something upstairs.

A door closing.

Alessandro moved silently toward it.

He reached the hallway.

Sophia stood beside the window.

She was holding a photograph.

“Who are you talking to?”

She turned.

Nobody.

“I wasn't talking.”

“You disappeared.”

“I needed air.”

“You could have told me.”

“I was afraid you'd stop me.”

“From doing what?”

Sophia looked at the photograph.

“I found something.”

“What?”

She handed it to him.

It showed the hospital.

Six years ago.

Sophia stood beside Daniel.

And in Daniel's arms was a newborn baby.

Alessandro stared.

“That isn't Emma.”

“No.”

“Who is it?”

Sophia's eyes filled with tears.

“You.”

Alessandro looked at the photograph again.

He recognized the blanket.

The hospital bracelet.

The tiny face.

His own.

“Why is Daniel holding me?”

“Because he was your father.”

“You said you didn't know.”

“I lied.”

Alessandro's voice hardened.

“Why?”

Sophia whispered:

“Because Daniel asked me to.”

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don't know where he is now.”

“But you knew where he was.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Alessandro stared.

“You've seen him.”

Sophia nodded.

“He came to me.”

“What did he want?”

“To see you.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because he said he wasn't ready.”

“And you believed him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Sophia looked at him.

“Because I saw what happened the last time he tried to come home.”

Alessandro's anger faded slightly.

“What happened?”

“He was shot.”

“By whom?”

Sophia's voice dropped.

“By someone you trust.”

Alessandro went still.

“Who?”

Sophia looked toward the doorway.

“Marco.”

Alessandro stared at her.

“No.”

Sophia nodded.

“I know how that sounds.”

“Marco has protected me for fifteen years.”

“I know.”

“He saved my life.”

“I know.”

“He would die for my family.”

Sophia whispered:

“He nearly did.”

Alessandro frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Marco wasn't working for Gabriel.”

“Then who?”

“Daniel.”

Silence.

Sophia continued.

“Marco was Daniel's man inside the Moretti organization.”

Alessandro felt dizzy.

“Why would he shoot him?”

“He didn't.”

“Then who did?”

Sophia hesitated.

“You did.”

Alessandro's face went blank.

“What?”

“You were there.”

“I was eight.”

“Yes.”

“I don't remember.”

“You were frightened.”

“What happened?”

Sophia sat down.

“I'll tell you.”

The night Alessandro was born had been chaos.

Aurelio's men had surrounded the hospital.

Daniel had gotten inside.

He found Mariana.

He found the babies.

And he found Alessandro.

But someone had followed him.

Luca.

Luca believed Daniel had come to take the children.

He confronted him.

The two men fought.

A gun was fired.

Alessandro was caught in the middle.

He fell.

Marco had been there.

He picked up the child.

Daniel told him to run.

Marco obeyed.

But before he could escape, Luca fired.

The bullet struck Daniel.

He collapsed.

Marco carried Alessandro away.

Mariana stayed behind.

And Luca believed Daniel was dead.

But he wasn't.

Someone else had arrived.

Aurelio.

He took Daniel.

And disappeared with him.

Sophia had witnessed everything.

She had been forced to swear silence.

Years later, Daniel escaped.

But he never returned.

Because Aurelio had threatened Alessandro's life.

Every time Daniel came close, someone died.

So he stayed away.

Until recently.

Alessandro stared at Sophia.

“Where is Daniel now?”

“I don't know.”

“Then who does?”

Sophia looked toward the window.

“Marco.”

Alessandro immediately reached for his phone.

No answer.

He called again.

Still nothing.

Then his phone rang.

Marco.

Alessandro answered.

“Where are you?”

Silence.

“Marco?”

A distorted voice answered.

“Don't go looking for him.”

Alessandro froze.

“Who is this?”

“Your trusted friend isn't who you think.”

“Put Marco on.”

A low laugh.

“You'll see him soon.”

The call ended.

Alessandro looked at Sophia.

“Where are the children?”

She stared at him.

“What?”

“Where are they?”

“In the house.”

“No.”

He ran.

The hallway was empty.

The children's rooms were open.

Beds overturned.

Windows broken.

The children were gone.

Sophia screamed.

“Emma!”

Alessandro's blood froze.

He ran downstairs.

The front door was open.

A black vehicle disappeared down the road.

He grabbed his keys.

Sophia followed.

“Where are you going?”

“To get my children.”

“You don't know where they are.”

“I know who took them.”

“Who?”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Marco.”

The tracking system showed one vehicle.

Moving north.

Alessandro followed.

The road became narrower.

The forest darker.

Then the vehicle stopped.

Alessandro pulled over.

He stepped out.

His gun was in his hand.

A barn stood ahead.

Its doors were open.

He entered.

“Marco!”

No answer.

Then—

“Alessandro.”

He turned.

Marco stood in the shadows.

He was holding a gun.

Behind him were Emma, Eliza, and Nicholas.

All three children were unharmed.

Alessandro's heart hammered.

“Put the gun down.”

Marco shook his head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because they will kill them.”

“Who?”

“Everyone.”

Alessandro stepped forward.

“You took my children.”

“I saved them.”

“From what?”

Marco looked at him.

“From the people inside your house.”

“You're the one who took them.”

“Yes.”

“Then explain.”

Marco lowered the weapon slightly.

“I received a message.”

“From Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That the mansion was compromised.”

Alessandro frowned.

“By whom?”

Marco looked toward the children.

“By Sophia.”

Alessandro turned.

Sophia was standing behind him.

She looked devastated.

“No.”

Marco's voice cracked.

“She betrayed you.”

Sophia shook her head.

“That's not true.”

Marco raised his gun.

“She was the one who opened the gates.”

Alessandro stared at her.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“She was the one who disabled the security.”

“No.”

“She was the one who told them where the children were.”

Sophia began crying.

“No.”

Marco looked at Alessandro.

“I have proof.”

He pulled out his phone.

A recording began playing.

Sophia's voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“Take Emma first.”

Alessandro's blood ran cold.

Sophia stared at the phone.

“That isn't me.”

“It is.”

“No.”

The recording continued.

“Alessandro will follow.”

Then another voice.

Victor.

“Will she cooperate?”

Sophia's recorded voice answered:

“She'll have no choice.”

Alessandro stared at her.

Sophia shook her head violently.

“I never said that.”

Marco looked at him.

“It's a fake.”

Alessandro turned.

“Why?”

“Because the recording was created from an old conversation.”

Sophia's face went white.

“AI.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“You're sure?”

Marco nodded.

“I checked the file.”

He held up another recording.

“This is the original.”

He pressed play.

Sophia's real voice filled the barn.

“I'll protect Emma.”

Then Victor's voice.

“And if Alessandro gets in the way?”

Sophia answered:

“Then I'll protect him too.”

The recording ended.

Alessandro looked at Marco.

“Someone altered the first recording.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Marco's face became grim.

“We don't know.”

Then a voice came from the barn entrance.

“I do.”

Everyone turned.

Daniel Reyes stood there.

Older.

Scarred.

Carrying no weapon.

Alessandro stared at him.

For the first time, father and son stood face to face.

Daniel looked at Emma.

Then Eliza.

Then Nicholas.

Finally, his eyes rested on Alessandro.

“I've been waiting a long time to meet you.”

Alessandro couldn't speak.

Daniel took one step forward.

“I know you have questions.”

“You think?”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“You hate me.”

“I don't know you.”

“That's worse.”

Alessandro's voice trembled.

“Why did you leave?”

Daniel looked at the children.

“Because I was told that if I came back, you would die.”

“By Aurelio?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel looked toward the road.

“By the man you trusted most.”

Alessandro's stomach dropped.

“Marco?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Your mother.”

Silence.

Mariana.

Alessandro's mother.

The woman who had come back from the dead.

The woman who had claimed she had sacrificed everything to protect him.

Daniel continued.

“She made a deal.”

“With whom?”

“Gabriel.”

“What deal?”

“To keep you alive.”

Alessandro stared.

“What did she give him?”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Me.”

Mariana had sold Daniel's location.

Not for money.

Not for power.

For Alessandro's life.

Gabriel had promised to leave the boy untouched if Daniel disappeared.

Mariana had agreed.

But Daniel hadn't disappeared willingly.

He had been captured.

Tortured.

Held for years.

And when he escaped, he stayed away because the threat remained.

Alessandro looked toward Sophia.

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

“Marco?”

“Yes.”

“Luca?”

Daniel answered.

“Yes.”

Alessandro laughed bitterly.

“So everyone knew.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not everyone.”

“Who didn't?”

“You.”

The answer cut deeply.

Alessandro looked at his father.

“You all decided I couldn't handle the truth.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“I'm done being protected.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then listen carefully.”

He stepped closer.

“The man who has been controlling this family isn't Gabriel.”

Alessandro frowned.

“Then who?”

Daniel pointed toward the road.

A black vehicle had stopped outside.

The door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Mariana.

She walked toward them slowly.

Alessandro stared.

His mother looked directly at Daniel.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Mariana whispered:

“I knew you'd come back.”

Daniel answered:

“I came back for my son.”

Mariana looked at Alessandro.

“And I came back for mine.”

Alessandro stepped between them.

“No more secrets.”

Both parents fell silent.

He looked at them.

“No more lies.”

Then he looked at Marco.

“No more protecting me without telling me the truth.”

Marco nodded.

Alessandro looked toward the children.

“No more moving them like pieces.”

Daniel nodded.

Then a phone rang.

Not Alessandro's.

Mariana's.

She answered.

A voice spoke.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

The caller said something.

Mariana's hand began to shake.

Daniel stepped toward her.

“What happened?”

She slowly lowered the phone.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

Mariana looked at Alessandro.

“Victor.”

Alessandro frowned.

“He knows where we are?”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“He knows something worse.”

“What?”

“He has the original birth records.”

Alessandro froze.

“Of all three children?”

Mariana nodded.

“And one more.”

“Whose?”

She looked at him.

“Yours.”

Silence.

Daniel's expression changed.

Mariana whispered:

“Victor has proof that you were never legally Alessandro Moretti.”

Alessandro stared.

“What am I, then?”

Before anyone could answer, headlights appeared through the trees.

Dozens of vehicles.

Men poured out.

Marco raised his weapon.

Daniel moved in front of the children.

Alessandro stepped beside him.

For the first time, father and son stood shoulder to shoulder.

Then Victor's voice came through a loudspeaker.

“You wanted the truth, Alessandro?”

A pause.

“Tonight, I'll give you all of it.”

Victor stepped from the darkness.

He held a folder.

Inside was Alessandro's original birth certificate.

And beside it—

a photograph of the woman who had given birth to him.

It wasn't Mariana.

Alessandro stared.

His world tilted.

Victor smiled.

“Your mother is alive.”

Alessandro looked at Mariana.

She was crying.

Victor continued:

“And she isn't the woman standing beside you.”

The folder slipped from his hand.

The first page landed in the dirt.

At the top was a name Alessandro had never seen before.

Catherine Reyes.

His biological mother.

The woman everyone had believed dead.

The woman whose photograph had disappeared from the archives.

The woman who had supposedly been killed the night he was born.

And beneath her name was a single handwritten sentence:

I gave my son away to save his life.

Alessandro looked at Daniel.

“You knew.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Daniel opened his eyes.

His answer was barely a whisper.

“She has been living under another name.”

“Which name?”

Daniel looked toward the mansion in the distance.

“The woman you trusted as your grandmother.”

Alessandro's blood ran cold.

Isabella.

His grandmother.

The woman who had claimed to protect the family.

The woman who had said Catherine was dead.

She wasn't his grandmother.

She was his mother.

And the woman standing beside Victor—

was not Isabella at all.

Alessandro finally understood why the family tree had never made sense.

There were stolen names.

Stolen identities.

Stolen children.

And now—

a stolen mother.

He looked toward the woman beside Victor.

She smiled.

Then removed the veil.

Alessandro's breath caught.

It was Isabella.

But the woman beside him—

was someone else.

A woman who looked exactly like her.

A twin.

Victor laughed.

“Welcome to the last secret of the Moretti family.”

The woman smiled at Alessandro.

May you like

“I'm sorry, my son.”

And every lie Alessandro had ever believed suddenly became the beginning of a much darker truth.
