Chapter 4 — The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

Chapter 4 — The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

By sunrise, Alessandro Moretti had stopped trusting the walls of his own house.

Every camera could have been compromised.

Every employee could have been bought.

Every locked door could have been opened by someone with the right key.

And somewhere inside that mansion was a secret his father had spent eighteen years burying.

A secret named Elena.

A secret named Emma.

And a man named Daniel Delgado, who was supposed to have died six years ago.

Alessandro stood in front of the nursery window, staring at the city.

Behind him, Marco placed a folder on the desk.

“We found something.”

Alessandro didn't turn.

“Tell me.”

“Daniel Delgado's death certificate was issued by a doctor named Richard Vale.”

“Is he alive?”

“No.”

“When did he die?”

“Five years ago.”

“How?”

“Heart attack.”

Alessandro turned.

“Convenient.”

“Very.”

“Who paid for the funeral?”

Marco hesitated.

“Your father.”

Alessandro's expression hardened.

“My father paid for the funeral of a man who supposedly died in a car accident?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“We don't know.”

“Then find out.”

Marco nodded.

He opened another file.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“Daniel never owned the car involved in the accident.”

Alessandro frowned.

“Whose car was it?”

“A company registered to a shell corporation.”

“Name?”

“Delgado Security Consulting.”

Alessandro stared at him.

“That was Daniel's company.”

“Yes.”

“But the company was dissolved before the accident.”

“Correct.”

“Then someone revived it.”

“Two days before the crash.”

Alessandro walked toward the desk.

“Someone wanted a paper trail.”

“Yes.”

“And they wanted Daniel to appear dead.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Marco looked at the nursery.

“Because someone was afraid he would talk.”

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

“About Elena?”

“Probably.”

“About Emma?”

“Definitely.”

Alessandro picked up the photograph of the newborn.

“What I don't understand is why Sophia was involved.”

Marco looked at him.

“Maybe she wasn't protecting Emma from your family.”

“Then who?”

“Maybe she was protecting Emma from Daniel.”

Alessandro shook his head.

“No.”

“You're certain?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Alessandro remembered Emma's description.

He loved you.

A child's certainty.

No hesitation.

“He loved her.”

Marco didn't argue.

Two hours later, Alessandro's convoy left Manhattan.

Three black SUVs moved through the rain toward New Jersey.

Emma remained at the mansion under Rosa's protection.

Sophia was still in the hospital.

Alessandro had refused to tell her that Elena had been found.

Not yet.

He didn't know whom to trust.

Even Marco had been instructed to keep the information limited.

As the convoy crossed the bridge, Alessandro received a call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Moretti.”

A woman's voice came through.

“Alessandro?”

He knew that voice.

He had heard it only once.

Years ago.

But something inside him recognized it immediately.

“Elena?”

Silence.

Then:

“You shouldn't be coming.”

Alessandro's hand tightened around the phone.

“Where are you?”

“You need to turn around.”

“I'm not leaving.”

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

“You found Emma.”

“Yes.”

“You found the nursery.”

“Yes.”

“You found Sophia.”

“Yes.”

Elena's breathing became uneven.

“Then you are already in danger.”

“I've been in danger my entire life.”

“You don't know what you're dealing with.”

“Then tell me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if I tell you, they will hear it.”

Alessandro looked at Marco.

“Who?”

“The same people who killed Daniel.”

His blood ran cold.

“You said Daniel was alive.”

“He was.”

“When did he die?”

“He didn't.”

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“He is alive.”

The line went silent.

Alessandro stopped breathing for a moment.

“Where is he?”

“I can't tell you.”

“Elena.”

“I know what you're thinking.”

“Do you?”

“You think you can protect us.”

“I can.”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“You can't protect someone from a war you don't understand.”

Alessandro stared ahead.

“Where are you?”

“Thirty minutes away.”

“Send me the address.”

“I won't.”

“Then I'll find you.”

“You already did.”

The line went dead.

Alessandro looked at Marco.

“Did you trace it?”

Marco nodded.

“Cell tower.”

“Where?”

He showed Alessandro the screen.

A location appeared.

An abandoned church.

Alessandro smiled without humor.

“Of course.”

The church had been abandoned for years.

Broken windows.

Collapsed stone.

Weeds growing through the steps.

The convoy stopped outside.

Marco and four guards entered first.

Alessandro followed.

The church was empty.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Alessandro.”

He turned.

A woman stepped into the light.

She was older than he remembered.

He had only seen her in childhood photographs.

But there was no mistaking her.

Elena.

His sister.

His father's supposedly dead daughter.

Alessandro stared.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Elena whispered:

“You look like him.”

“Who?”

“Father.”

Alessandro's face hardened.

“I was told you died.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because Father needed me to.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew the truth.”

“What truth?”

Elena looked at Marco.

“Who is he?”

“My security chief.”

“Can he be trusted?”

“Yes.”

Elena shook her head.

“Don't say that too quickly.”

Marco's expression remained neutral.

Alessandro stepped closer.

“You're my sister.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you disappear?”

“Because your father ordered me to.”

“Why?”

“Because I had Emma.”

Alessandro stared.

“Elaborate.”

Elena took a breath.

“Emma wasn't supposed to survive.”

The words struck him.

“What?”

“When she was born, someone tried to kill her.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Don't lie to me.”

“I don't know.”

“Then how did you protect her?”

“Daniel.”

Alessandro's heart tightened.

“Daniel was her father.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who was he?”

“My protector.”

Alessandro frowned.

“You're telling me Daniel wasn't Emma's father?”

“No.”

“Then why did he risk his life for her?”

“Because he promised me.”

“Promised you what?”

“To keep my daughter alive.”

Alessandro went still.

“Your daughter?”

Elena nodded.

“Emma is my daughter.”

The world seemed to stop.

Alessandro looked at her.

Then at the photograph.

Then back at Elena.

“Sophia…”

“Is not her biological mother.”

He closed his eyes.

Everything rearranged itself.

Sophia hadn't lied.

She had simply never told the whole truth.

Emma was Elena's daughter.

But Sophia had raised her.

Protected her.

Loved her.

And sacrificed herself for her.

Alessandro's voice became quiet.

“Who is Emma's father?”

Elena looked away.

“I don't know.”

Alessandro frowned.

“You don't know?”

“I knew who he claimed to be.”

“Who?”

“He called himself Adrian.”

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

“The same name Sophia gave me.”

“Yes.”

“Was that his real name?”

“No.”

“Then who was he?”

Elena looked at him.

“That is the question that got Daniel killed.”

Elena led them into the church basement.

There was a small room hidden behind a stone wall.

Inside were boxes.

Photographs.

Documents.

A laptop.

And a child's blanket.

Alessandro recognized it immediately.

It was the blanket Emma had carried in one of her childhood photographs.

He looked at Elena.

“You kept this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought I would die before seeing her again.”

Alessandro didn't respond.

Elena opened a box.

Inside was a passport.

A fake identity.

Adrian Cross.

Alessandro stared.

“Who was he?”

Elena's hands trembled.

“A man your father trusted.”

“His name?”

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Luca Moretti.”

Alessandro froze.

His uncle.

The man his father claimed had disappeared.

The man who had supposedly betrayed the family.

His mother's brother.

His own blood.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Luca was Emma's father?”

Elena nodded.

Alessandro took a step backward.

His entire understanding of his family had just collapsed.

“My uncle had a child with you?”

“Yes.”

“Why did my father hide it?”

“Because Luca wasn't supposed to inherit anything.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It does when you know what Luca had done.”

“What?”

Elena looked at him.

“He discovered where the family's money was really going.”

Alessandro frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Your father wasn't the only person running the Moretti organization.”

Alessandro's expression changed.

“Who was?”

Elena shook her head.

“Someone above him.”

“There was no one above him.”

“There was.”

“Who?”

“Your grandfather.”

Alessandro stared at her.

“My grandfather died before I was born.”

“Exactly.”

Silence.

Elena opened another folder.

Inside were financial records.

Names.

Transfers.

Accounts in Switzerland.

Cayman Islands.

Panama.

Alessandro scanned the pages.

Millions of dollars.

Billions.

His family had been moving money through hidden companies for decades.

But one name appeared repeatedly.

Aurelio Moretti.

His grandfather.

Alessandro looked up.

“Why did Luca expose him?”

“He didn't.”

“What?”

“He tried to.”

“And?”

“Your grandfather found out.”

Alessandro's face became cold.

“What happened?”

Elena looked down.

“Luca disappeared.”

“When?”

“1998.”

The same year from the newspaper.

Alessandro stared at the documents.

“So my father blamed Luca for betraying the family.”

“Yes.”

“But Luca was actually investigating Grandfather.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Father lie to me?”

“Because by the time he learned the truth, it was too late.”

“Too late for what?”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“To save your family.”

A sound came from upstairs.

Marco immediately reached for his weapon.

Everyone froze.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Approaching the basement door.

Elena whispered:

“They found us.”

Alessandro motioned for everyone to move.

The footsteps stopped.

Silence.

Then the door exploded inward.

Gunfire tore through the basement.

Marco pushed Alessandro down.

Bullets struck the stone wall.

Elena screamed.

“Emma!”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Emma isn't here.”

“I know.”

“Then why did you say her name?”

Elena stared at him.

Because she had just realized something.

“Because they don't want me.”

“What?”

“They want the child.”

Alessandro's phone rang.

Rosa.

He answered.

“Rosa?”

Her voice was frantic.

“Mr. Moretti…”

“What happened?”

“Emma is gone.”

Everything inside Alessandro went still.

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

“Where is security?”

“Unconscious.”

“Rosa, listen to me. Lock yourself inside the kitchen.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because they left something.”

“What?”

“A note.”

Alessandro's voice became deadly.

“Read it.”

Rosa hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Bring Elena to the old Moretti warehouse.”

“What else?”

“They said…”

Her voice broke.

“They said if you want Emma alive, you must bring the woman who knows who her father really is.”

Alessandro looked at Elena.

She understood immediately.

“They took Emma.”

“Yes.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“I knew this would happen.”

Alessandro's voice became cold.

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“This happened because someone inside my family gave them access.”

He turned toward Marco.

“Get us out.”

The warehouse stood near the Hudson River.

Abandoned.

Dark.

Rain hammered the roof.

Alessandro walked through the front entrance alone.

No security.

No weapons visible.

Elena remained hidden nearby.

Marco had positioned his team around the building.

Alessandro called out.

“You wanted me here.”

Nothing.

Then a child's voice echoed from the darkness.

“Mr. Moretti?”

Alessandro's heart stopped.

“Emma?”

“Yes.”

He moved forward.

A light came on.

Emma sat in a chair.

Her hands weren't tied.

She looked frightened.

But unharmed.

Beside her stood a man.

Tall.

Dark hair.

A thin scar near his chin.

Alessandro stopped.

The man looked at him.

Neither spoke.

Then the man smiled.

“Hello, Alessandro.”

Alessandro recognized him.

Not from a photograph.

From memory.

His father's old security files.

Daniel Delgado.

Alive.

Alessandro's voice was barely a whisper.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

“That's what I needed everyone to believe.”

Emma looked at him.

“Are you my daddy?”

Daniel's expression broke.

He knelt.

“No, sweetheart.”

“Then why do you know Mommy?”

Daniel looked at Alessandro.

“Because I promised her mother I would protect you.”

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

“You kidnapped Emma.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I saved her.”

“From whom?”

Daniel's face became serious.

“From the person who is coming here right now.”

The warehouse lights suddenly went out.

A vehicle screeched outside.

Then another.

Daniel grabbed Emma.

Marco's men shouted.

Gunfire erupted.

Alessandro turned toward the entrance.

Daniel looked at him.

“Now you understand.”

“Understand what?”

Daniel's eyes hardened.

“Your family didn't bury the truth.”

He looked toward the darkness.

“They buried me.”

And somewhere outside the warehouse, a man's voice called out:

“Alessandro!”

A voice Alessandro recognized.

A voice he had heard his entire childhood.

His father's oldest friend.

The man he had trusted for twenty years.

And the man who had just said:

“Give me the girl, and nobody else has to die.”

Alessandro's blood ran cold.

Because the voice belonged to the one person he had never thought to suspect.

The man standing beside his father in every family photograph.

The man who had helped raise him.

The man who had always called him son.

May you like

And now—

he was coming for Emma.
