Chapter 9 — The Name in the Old Photograph

Chapter 9 — The Name in the Old Photograph

For one impossible second, Alessandro forgot how to breathe.

The man standing in the warehouse looked nothing like the photograph on his father's desk.

That Luca Moretti had been young, arrogant, and immaculate.

This man was thinner.

His hair was streaked with gray.

A scar ran from beneath his left ear to his jaw.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

Alessandro had seen those eyes in old family photographs.

He had seen them in his dreams.

He had spent six years believing those eyes belonged to a dead man.

Luca looked directly at him.

“Hello, Alessandro.”

Alessandro's weapon remained pointed toward the floor.

“Dad?”

Luca's expression broke.

For the first time, the man who had spent years hiding in darkness looked like a father seeing his son after a lifetime.

“Yes.”

Alessandro took one step forward.

“You're alive.”

Luca nodded.

“I am.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You always had a choice.”

Luca looked down.

“You're right.”

The words struck Alessandro harder than an excuse would have.

“You knew about me.”

“Every year.”

“You watched me grow up.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I thought you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“And you never came back.”

Luca swallowed.

“Because if I came back, you would have died too.”

Alessandro's anger surged.

“You don't get to decide that.”

“No.”

Luca looked at him.

“I don't.”

Behind them, Victor raised his gun.

“Enough.”

Luca's eyes shifted toward him.

“You're still taking orders from my father?”

Victor laughed.

“Your father is the reason you're alive.”

“No.”

Luca's voice became cold.

“You're the reason I disappeared.”

Aurelio stepped forward.

“Don't rewrite history.”

Luca looked at him.

“You killed everyone who tried to expose you.”

“I protected this family.”

“You destroyed it.”

“I built it.”

“And you buried it.”

Aurelio's eyes narrowed.

“Careful.”

Luca smiled sadly.

“You've been telling people that for thirty years.”

Then he looked toward the children.

Emma.

Eliza.

Nicholas.

His expression changed completely.

“My children.”

Emma stared at him.

“Are you my daddy?”

Luca's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Emma looked at Eliza.

Then back at him.

“Why didn't you come get us?”

Luca closed his eyes.

“Because I was trying to make sure you survived.”

Emma's voice trembled.

“But we were alone.”

Luca couldn't answer.

Eliza stepped closer.

“You knew where I was?”

“Yes.”

“You knew Grandpa kept me here?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you save me?”

Luca looked broken.

“Because every time I tried, someone died.”

The warehouse fell silent.

Then Nicholas spoke.

“Is he my father too?”

Luca looked at him.

“Yes.”

Nicholas stared at him.

“Why did you leave me?”

Luca knelt.

“I never left you.”

“You weren't there.”

“I was.”

“No.”

The boy shook his head.

“I remember.”

Luca's face changed.

“What do you remember?”

“You stood outside the door.”

Luca froze.

Nicholas continued.

“You told me not to be afraid.”

Alessandro looked at Luca.

“You were here.”

Luca nodded.

“I came back many times.”

“Why didn't you take them?”

“Because Aurelio wasn't the only person watching.”

Alessandro frowned.

“Who else?”

Luca looked at Victor.

Victor smiled.

“Now we're getting somewhere.”

Victor raised his weapon.

“Put yours down, Alessandro.”

“No.”

“Then Emma dies.”

Alessandro's body went rigid.

Luca stepped forward.

“Victor.”

“Don't.”

“You've already lost.”

Victor laughed.

“Have I?”

He pointed toward the ledger.

“That book contains enough information to destroy governments.”

“Which is why you want it.”

“Of course.”

“And the children?”

“Insurance.”

Aurelio suddenly spoke.

“You promised me the ledger.”

Victor looked at him.

“You no longer have authority.”

Aurelio's face darkened.

“You're nothing without me.”

Victor laughed.

“That's where you're wrong.”

He turned toward Alessandro.

“I built the second organization while you were hiding.”

Luca stared.

“You built your own empire.”

“Yes.”

Aurelio looked stunned.

“You betrayed me.”

Victor smiled.

“You taught me how.”

Then the warehouse doors slammed shut.

Metal locks dropped into place.

Alessandro looked around.

More men emerged from the shadows.

They weren't Aurelio's men.

They wore no Moretti insignia.

Victor had brought his own army.

Luca whispered:

“We're surrounded.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Then we stop running.”

Victor walked toward the ledger.

“Give it to me.”

Aurelio stepped in front of it.

“No.”

Victor's expression changed.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“You're finished.”

Aurelio looked at him.

“So are you.”

Victor raised his gun.

Before he could fire, Aurelio moved.

The bullet struck the table.

The ledger fell.

Luca lunged.

Alessandro grabbed Emma.

Elena grabbed Eliza.

Nicholas ran toward Luca.

Gunfire erupted.

Marco's team crashed through the side entrance.

The warehouse exploded into chaos.

Alessandro ducked behind a concrete barrier with Emma.

“Stay down!”

Emma clutched his jacket.

“Where's Eliza?”

“She's with Elena.”

“Where's Nicholas?”

“Luca has him.”

She looked at him.

“Are we going to die?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I promised.”

Emma nodded.

She believed him.

That frightened him more than anything.

Across the warehouse, Luca dragged Nicholas behind a steel container.

Eliza and Elena were hiding nearby.

Sophia crawled toward them.

Victor spotted her.

“You.”

Sophia froze.

“You lied to me.”

“I never promised you anything.”

“You promised to deliver Emma.”

“I changed my mind.”

Victor aimed at her.

Luca fired first.

Victor ducked.

Sophia rolled behind cover.

Luca shouted:

“Go!”

She grabbed Eliza.

“Come with me.”

Eliza shook her head.

“I want my father.”

Luca heard her.

His eyes filled with tears.

“I am here.”

Eliza ran toward him.

He caught her.

For six years, he had imagined that moment.

He had imagined her face.

Her voice.

The weight of his child in his arms.

But he had never imagined that she would look at him and ask:

“Why did you let them keep me?”

Luca couldn't lie.

“I was afraid.”

“You're my daddy.”

“Yes.”

“Daddies aren't supposed to be afraid.”

He closed his eyes.

“No.”

She touched his face.

“Then don't be afraid now.”

Luca looked at his daughter.

Something changed inside him.

The frightened man who had spent six years hiding disappeared.

In his place stood the man who had once challenged Aurelio Moretti.

He stood.

“Alessandro!”

His son looked over.

“Get the children out.”

“What about you?”

“I'll handle Victor.”

Alessandro shook his head.

“No.”

Luca stared.

“What?”

“You don't get to disappear again.”

Luca's expression softened.

“You sound like your mother.”

“I sound like your son.”

For a moment, Luca smiled.

Then the warehouse lights went out.

When they returned, Aurelio was gone.

So was Victor.

Only the ledger remained.

Alessandro picked it up.

Marco entered.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“We found a vehicle outside.”

“Victor?”

“No.”

“Whose?”

Marco handed him a photograph.

A license plate.

A name.

CLAIRE HAWTHORNE.

Alessandro looked toward Eliza.

She was sitting beside Luca.

“She came for her.”

“Who?”

“Her adoptive mother.”

They found Claire Hawthorne at the end of the pier.

She stood alone beneath an umbrella.

No guards.

No weapon.

Just a woman in a dark coat.

When she saw Eliza, she began crying.

“Eliza.”

The little girl stared at her.

“Mom?”

Claire dropped the umbrella.

She ran forward.

But stopped before touching her.

She looked at Luca.

“May I?”

Luca nodded.

Claire knelt.

Eliza ran into her arms.

“I thought you were dead.”

Claire cried.

“I thought you were.”

Alessandro watched them.

There was something genuine in the woman's grief.

Something he couldn't ignore.

“You knew who she was.”

Claire looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Why did you hide her?”

“Because I was told she would be killed.”

“By whom?”

Claire looked toward the river.

“Aurelio.”

“You worked for him.”

“No.”

She wiped her tears.

“I worked against him.”

Alessandro frowned.

“Then why take Eliza?”

“Because Luca asked me to.”

Everyone looked at Luca.

He nodded.

“I needed someone outside the family.”

Claire continued.

“I raised her as my own because that was the only way to keep her invisible.”

“You knew she had a twin?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Emma was alive?”

Claire hesitated.

“Yes.”

Alessandro stared.

“How long?”

“Six years.”

His anger returned.

“You knew my sister was alive and never told us?”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“Your grandfather found out.”

Claire's voice trembled.

“He threatened my husband.”

“Where is he?”

“Dead.”

Alessandro fell silent.

“He killed him?”

Claire nodded.

“Three years ago.”

Eliza looked up.

“Mom?”

Claire hugged her.

“I didn't tell you because I wanted you to have a normal life.”

Eliza whispered:

“Was it normal?”

Claire couldn't answer.

Alessandro looked away.

Every adult had made the same mistake.

They had decided what children could handle.

They had hidden the truth in the name of protection.

And every secret had become another weapon.

That night, they returned to the mansion.

Luca sat alone in the study.

Alessandro entered.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Finally, Alessandro asked:

“Why did you really leave?”

Luca looked at the fireplace.

“Because your grandfather gave me a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Join him or watch everyone you loved die.”

“You chose to disappear.”

“I chose to make them believe I was dead.”

“You could have told me.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor had someone inside your life.”

Alessandro frowned.

“Who?”

Luca looked at him.

“Your father's secretary.”

“Margaret?”

“Yes.”

“She was working for you.”

“She was working for everyone.”

Alessandro remembered the old photograph.

Margaret.

Aurelio.

Victor.

His father.

And another person standing in the corner.

He suddenly understood something.

He pulled the photograph from his pocket.

The one he had found in the archive.

He turned it over.

There was a name written on the back.

He had not noticed it before.

Daniel Reyes.

Alessandro stared.

“Who is Daniel Reyes?”

Luca's face changed.

“You found that photograph?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Your father's archive.”

Luca stood immediately.

“Where is the photograph?”

Alessandro handed it to him.

Luca stared at the name.

His hands began to shake.

“No.”

“What?”

“That can't be.”

“Who is Daniel Reyes?”

Luca looked at him.

“He was your grandfather's accountant.”

“And?”

“He died twenty-eight years ago.”

Alessandro frowned.

“He's in the photograph.”

“I know.”

“Then how?”

Luca turned the photograph over again.

There was a second line beneath the name.

THE ORIGINAL HEIR.

Alessandro felt a chill.

“What does that mean?”

Luca didn't answer.

Alessandro stepped closer.

“Dad.”

Luca finally whispered:

“Your grandfather had another son.”

The room became silent.

“Who?”

“Daniel.”

“Then why wasn't he part of the family?”

“Because Aurelio erased him.”

“Why?”

Luca looked toward the door.

“Because Daniel wasn't his son.”

Alessandro's eyes widened.

“Then whose son was he?”

Luca stared at him.

“Your grandmother's.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if you know who his father was.”

“Who?”

Luca's voice dropped.

“Someone your grandfather spent thirty years trying to kill.”

Before Alessandro could ask another question, the mansion's alarm began screaming.

Marco burst through the door.

“Boss!”

“What?”

“We found something.”

“What?”

“An old photograph.”

Alessandro stared at him.

“We already have one.”

“No.”

Marco shook his head.

“This one was found in the nursery.”

He handed it over.

Alessandro looked down.

It showed Aurelio standing beside three children.

Luca.

Daniel.

And a little girl.

Alessandro's heart stopped.

The little girl was his mother.

But written beneath her photograph was a name he had never seen before.

MARIANA REYES.

Alessandro looked up.

“That's my mother.”

Luca nodded.

“No.”

“What?”

“That's not her name.”

Alessandro stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Luca pointed at the photograph.

“Your mother's real name was Mariana Reyes.”

Silence.

“She wasn't born a Moretti.”

“No.”

“Then who was she?”

Luca's eyes filled with grief.

“She was Daniel's sister.”

Alessandro couldn't speak.

The family tree he had known all his life was collapsing in front of him.

His mother had been hiding her identity.

His grandfather had erased his own son.

Luca had disappeared.

Victor had built a rival empire.

Three children had been hidden.

And now a dead man's name had appeared in an old photograph.

But one question remained.

“Why would my mother hide that she was Daniel's sister?”

Luca looked at him.

“Because Daniel didn't die.”

Alessandro froze.

“What?”

Luca whispered:

“He changed his name.”

“Where is he?”

Luca looked toward the window.

“I don't know.”

A phone began ringing.

Alessandro answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“You found the photograph.”

“Who is this?”

“You've been looking for the wrong dead man.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

A pause.

“The man you've been calling your grandfather.”

Alessandro's blood ran cold.

The voice continued:

“Aurelio Moretti died twenty-eight years ago.”

Alessandro looked at Luca.

Luca's face had gone white.

“Then who is the man holding the children?”

The caller whispered:

“His brother.”

The line went dead.

Alessandro stared at the photograph again.

For the first time, he noticed something in the background.

A mirror.

And reflected in it was another man.

Someone who looked exactly like Aurelio.

Two brothers.

One identity.

One dead.

One alive.

And somewhere in New York, the man who had spent decades pretending to be Aurelio Moretti was still watching them.

The photograph had not revealed the truth.

May you like

It had revealed something much worse.

The man they had been hunting was not the man they thought he was.
