Chapter 13 — The Choice Alessandro Made

Chapter 13 — The Choice Alessandro Made

The woman standing beside Victor looked exactly like Isabella.

The same silver hair.

The same sharp cheekbones.

The same pale eyes.

But Alessandro knew immediately that she was different.

Not because of her face.

Because of the way she looked at him.

Isabella had always looked at him as though he were a piece on a board.

This woman looked at him as though she had spent thirty years remembering the sound of his first cry.

“My son.”

The words struck harder than any bullet.

Alessandro stared at her.

“No.”

She took one step forward.

“I know this is difficult.”

“You're lying.”

“I understand why you think that.”

“You're not my mother.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I am.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Catherine.”

She looked at him.

“Don't.”

“You can't do this now.”

“I've waited thirty years.”

“You've waited too long.”

Alessandro looked at Daniel.

“You knew she was alive?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Many times.”

“Then why didn't you?”

Daniel's voice broke.

“Because every time I got close, someone died.”

Alessandro looked toward Victor.

“And now?”

“Now there is nowhere left to run.”

Victor smiled.

“Exactly.”

Marco raised his weapon.

Victor's men immediately raised theirs.

The forest became a frozen battlefield.

One wrong movement would turn the night into bloodshed.

Alessandro looked at the children.

Emma was holding Eliza's hand.

Nicholas stood behind Marco.

All three were terrified.

He couldn't let anyone fire.

Not here.

Not with them in the middle.

He lowered his weapon.

“Everyone put your guns down.”

Marco stared at him.

“Boss—”

“Put it down.”

“You can't trust them.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I won't let my children watch another family member die.”

The words silenced everyone.

Victor laughed.

“You still think you're in control.”

“No.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“I'm finally refusing to play.”

Victor's smile faded.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you don't get to decide what happens next.”

Victor lifted the folder.

“You don't even know who you are.”

Alessandro stepped forward.

“I know exactly who I am.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward Emma.

“I'm their father.”

Then toward Eliza.

“I'm her brother.”

Then Nicholas.

“I'm his family.”

He looked at Sophia.

“She protected my children when everyone else used them.”

Then Marco.

“He protected me even when I didn't understand why.”

Finally, he looked at Daniel.

“My father.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

Alessandro turned toward Catherine.

“And if you're really my mother, I'll hear your story.”

Victor's face hardened.

“But you don't get to use me against them.”

For the first time, Victor looked uncertain.

A gunshot exploded through the trees.

Everyone ducked.

Marco reacted instantly.

He pushed Nicholas behind a vehicle.

Daniel grabbed Alessandro.

Catherine fell to the ground.

“Mom!”

Alessandro ran toward her.

Daniel shouted:

“Don't!”

Another shot struck the ground beside him.

Marco pointed toward the ridge.

“Sniper!”

Chaos erupted.

Victor's men scattered.

Marco's security team returned fire.

Alessandro pulled Catherine behind a stone wall.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Who is shooting?”

“I don't know.”

Daniel looked toward the mansion.

“Yes, you do.”

Catherine stared at him.

“Gabriel.”

“No.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Not Gabriel.”

He pointed toward the ridge.

“Mateo.”

Alessandro froze.

“But Mateo was inside the mansion.”

“He wanted you to believe that.”

Daniel's voice became urgent.

“He has been moving between identities for decades.”

Alessandro suddenly understood.

The family had been fighting shadows.

Names meant nothing.

Faces meant nothing.

Anyone could be someone else.

Anyone could be lying.

Then a bullet struck the stone inches from Alessandro's hand.

He looked up.

A figure stood on the ridge.

Mateo.

He raised his weapon.

“Alessandro!”

Mateo shouted.

“Your father is lying to you!”

Daniel shouted back:

“Don't listen to him!”

Mateo laughed.

“You still haven't told him, Daniel.”

Alessandro looked at his father.

“Told me what?”

Daniel's face went pale.

Mateo lowered his weapon.

“Ask him who really killed Aurelio.”

Alessandro stared at Daniel.

“Who?”

Daniel said nothing.

Mateo smiled.

“Your mother.”

Catherine shook her head.

“No.”

Mateo continued.

“She killed him.”

Alessandro looked at Catherine.

“Is it true?”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The world seemed to stop.

“Why?”

Catherine whispered:

“Because he was going to kill you.”

Alessandro's voice broke.

“And you?”

“I stopped him.”

“By killing him?”

“Yes.”

He stepped backward.

“So all these years…”

Catherine nodded.

“I carried that guilt every day.”

Alessandro looked at Daniel.

“And you let me believe it was you.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“I wanted the blame.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew what Aurelio's people would do to the woman who killed him.”

“You took her place.”

“Yes.”

Alessandro stared at them.

His entire childhood had been built on sacrifice.

Every lie had been someone's attempt to protect someone else.

And every lie had created another wound.

Victor suddenly stepped forward.

“Enough.”

He held up the folder.

“You want the truth?”

He threw it toward Alessandro.

Pages scattered across the ground.

Birth certificates.

Medical records.

DNA reports.

Death certificates.

Marriage licenses.

Photographs.

Alessandro picked up the first page.

His hands shook.

The name at the top was his.

But the father's name was blank.

The mother's name:

Catherine Reyes.

Another document showed his adoption.

Adoptive father:

Luca Moretti.

Adoptive mother:

Mariana Moretti.

Alessandro stared.

“You adopted me.”

Luca nodded.

“Yes.”

“You knew I wasn't your son.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you were eight months old when we took you.”

“And Daniel?”

“He was dying.”

Catherine spoke softly.

“I couldn't protect you.”

“So you gave me to Luca.”

“Yes.”

“Why him?”

“Because he loved me.”

Alessandro looked at Luca.

“You loved her.”

“Yes.”

“And you raised my father's son.”

Luca nodded.

“I never cared whose blood you carried.”

Alessandro's eyes filled.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“But you loved me.”

Luca's voice broke.

“More than anything.”

For the first time, Alessandro believed him.

Not because the story was perfect.

Because it wasn't.

There was no hidden agenda in Luca's eyes.

Only regret.

Victor stepped forward.

“You see?”

He spread his arms.

“They all lied to you.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Yes.”

“They stole your identity.”

“Yes.”

“They stole your inheritance.”

“Yes.”

“They stole your mother.”

Alessandro nodded.

“Yes.”

Victor smiled.

“Then join me.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Victor extended his hand.

“Take back what belongs to you.”

“What belongs to me?”

“The empire.”

“No.”

“The money.”

“No.”

“The family.”

Alessandro looked at the children.

“I already have one.”

Victor's face darkened.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“You could control everything.”

“I don't want control.”

“Everyone wants power.”

“Not anymore.”

Victor laughed.

“You're lying.”

Alessandro shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward the mansion.

“For thirty years, people killed each other over a name.”

He looked at the documents.

“They forged identities.”

He looked at Catherine.

“They abandoned children.”

Then at the three children.

“They turned innocent kids into leverage.”

His voice became stronger.

“And I refuse to continue it.”

Victor stared.

“So what will you do?”

Alessandro picked up the original ledger.

He had brought it with him.

He opened it.

Page after page contained properties, accounts, shell companies, secret trusts, and names.

A fortune built over generations.

An empire that had destroyed more lives than it had protected.

Victor's eyes widened.

“You wouldn't.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Yes.”

He tore the first page.

Victor shouted:

“Stop!”

Alessandro tore another.

Then another.

The pages fell around his feet.

“You're destroying your inheritance!”

“No.”

He tore another page.

“I'm destroying your reason to fight.”

Victor raised his gun.

Marco raised his.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Victor.”

Victor's eyes were wild.

“You don't understand what you're doing!”

Alessandro kept tearing.

“I understand.”

“You'll be nothing!”

“I'll be free.”

Another page.

“You'll lose everything!”

“Good.”

Another.

“Your children will have nothing!”

Alessandro looked at Emma.

“She'll have me.”

Another page.

“Eliza will have no inheritance!”

“She'll have a family.”

Another.

“Nicholas will be nobody!”

Alessandro smiled sadly.

“Then he'll have the chance to become whoever he wants.”

Victor's hand trembled.

“You're insane.”

“No.”

Alessandro closed the ledger.

“I've finally learned what matters.”

Victor fired.

Marco tackled Alessandro.

The bullet struck the wall.

Daniel fired back.

Victor disappeared behind the vehicles.

Chaos erupted.

Men shouted.

Security teams moved.

Catherine pulled Emma behind cover.

Sophia grabbed Eliza.

Luca protected Nicholas.

Alessandro looked around.

For the first time, everyone was protecting the children.

Not the money.

Not the name.

Not the empire.

The children.

He understood.

This was the choice.

Not between Victor and Daniel.

Not between Moretti and Reyes.

Not between inheritance and poverty.

It was between repeating the past—

and ending it.

Alessandro grabbed the remaining ledger pages.

He carried them toward the stone fireplace.

Victor saw him.

“No!”

Victor ran toward him.

Alessandro threw the pages into the fire.

The flames rose.

Victor stopped.

His face collapsed.

“No.”

The pages curled.

Numbers disappeared.

Names vanished.

Properties.

Accounts.

Secrets.

All burning.

Victor dropped to his knees.

Thirty years of obsession turned to ash in front of him.

Alessandro stood beside the fire.

“You wanted the empire.”

Victor stared at him.

“You destroyed it.”

“No.”

Alessandro looked at the flames.

“I destroyed the reason you kept hurting people.”

The gunfire stopped.

Silence returned.

Victor was arrested before sunrise.

Mateo was found injured near the ridge.

He surrendered without resistance.

The remaining members of the organization disappeared.

Some fled.

Some cooperated.

Others were arrested.

But the biggest surprise came from Isabella.

She walked into the barn just before dawn.

She looked at the burning ledger.

Then at Alessandro.

“You actually did it.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed everything.”

“No.”

She looked confused.

“You destroyed the empire.”

“I destroyed the part that made people afraid.”

Isabella smiled.

“You were always different.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Are you really my grandmother?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you lie?”

“Because I was afraid of what the truth would do to you.”

“It didn't protect me.”

“No.”

She looked at Catherine.

“It protected the family.”

Alessandro shook his head.

“That's the problem.”

He stepped closer.

“The family should have protected the people.”

Isabella looked at him for a long moment.

Then she removed a small key from around her neck.

She placed it in his hand.

“The ledger wasn't everything.”

Alessandro frowned.

“What else is there?”

“The original trust.”

“You said the ledger controlled it.”

“The ledger was only a map.”

“Where is the trust?”

Isabella smiled.

“Somewhere no one has ever looked.”

“Where?”

She pointed toward the children.

“With them.”

Alessandro didn't understand.

Isabella continued.

“Your great-grandfather created the trust for the descendants who would end the cycle.”

“So the children inherit it?”

“No.”

She looked at Alessandro.

“You do.”

“Why?”

“Because you destroyed the empire.”

Alessandro stared.

“The trust was designed to activate only when the heir voluntarily surrendered control of the family fortune.”

He looked at the key.

“What does it open?”

Isabella's expression became serious.

“The children's future.”

Three months later, the mansion was almost empty.

The walls remained.

The gardens remained.

But the weapons were gone.

The secret rooms were sealed.

The hidden files were transferred to federal investigators.

The Moretti organization had collapsed.

Not in a bloody war.

Not through betrayal.

Through one man's refusal to continue it.

Alessandro sold most of the remaining properties.

The money went into protected trusts for the children.

Not for power.

For education.

For healthcare.

For whatever future they wanted.

Emma received a scholarship fund.

Eliza received a foundation for children from broken families.

Nicholas's trust was placed under his own control when he became an adult.

And the Moretti name—

became meaningless.

Which was exactly what Alessandro wanted.

Sophia stayed.

Not as a servant.

Not as an employee.

As family.

Marco became head of a private security company that protected victims of organized crime.

Luca retired.

Mariana began volunteering at a children's shelter.

Daniel disappeared again.

But this time, he didn't disappear because he was afraid.

He traveled.

He visited Alessandro.

Sometimes he stayed for dinner.

Sometimes he took the children to the park.

He was learning how to be a father.

And Alessandro was learning how to be his son.

Catherine stayed too.

For the first time, Alessandro had both parents.

Not perfect parents.

Not innocent parents.

But honest ones.

One year later, Emma stood in the garden.

She was holding a small photograph.

Alessandro approached.

“What are you looking at?”

“My family.”

He smiled.

“Who is in it?”

Emma pointed.

“You.”

“Obviously.”

“Mom Sophia.”

He smiled.

“Of course.”

“Grandpa Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Grandma Catherine.”

“Yes.”

“Uncle Luca.”

“Yes.”

She pointed toward Nicholas.

“And Nicholas.”

Then Eliza.

“And Eliza.”

Emma looked up.

“Is it okay if we don't call ourselves Morettis anymore?”

Alessandro crouched beside her.

“You can call yourself whatever you want.”

“What will you call yourself?”

He thought for a moment.

“Alessandro.”

“Just Alessandro?”

“Just Alessandro.”

Emma smiled.

“I like that.”

“So do I.”

She hugged him.

For a few seconds, neither spoke.

Then Emma whispered:

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Are we finally safe?”

Alessandro looked across the garden.

At Sophia.

At Daniel.

At Catherine.

At Luca.

At the children running through the grass.

He knew the world could never promise absolute safety.

But he also knew something more important.

No one would ever again use their family name to control them.

“Yes,” he said.

“We're finally home.”

Emma smiled.

May you like

And for the first time in generations, the Moretti house wasn't a fortress.

It was simply a home.
