Chapter 3 — The Secret Sophia Buried

Chapter 3 — The Secret Sophia Buried

The door locked behind them with a heavy metallic click.

Emma jumped.

Alessandro immediately moved in front of her.

Marco raised his weapon and scanned the dark corridor.

“Everyone stay where you are.”

The emergency lights flickered once.

Then twice.

Finally, the hallway returned in a dim red glow.

Emma's fingers were wrapped tightly around Alessandro's hand.

“Is somebody here?”

Alessandro looked down at her.

“No one is going to hurt you.”

It was not a promise he made lightly.

It was a promise he intended to keep.

Marco touched his earpiece.

“Security?”

Static.

He tried again.

“Security, respond.”

Nothing.

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

“Cut the radio?”

“Looks like it.”

“Can you open the doors?”

“From here, no.”

“Then someone has taken control of the system.”

Marco moved toward the nearest control panel.

Alessandro looked at Emma.

“Stay with me.”

She nodded.

They walked through the darkness.

At the end of the corridor, a door stood slightly open.

Light came from inside.

Marco moved first.

He pushed the door open.

Nothing.

An empty room.

An old desk.

A single lamp.

And another photograph lying in the center of the desk.

Alessandro approached.

The photograph showed a young woman.

Elena.

She was standing beside Daniel.

Both were smiling.

Between them was a baby.

Emma.

On the back, written in the same handwriting as the previous message:

SHE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED.

Alessandro stared at the words.

Marco looked over his shoulder.

“Who?”

Alessandro already knew.

“Sophia.”

By morning, the mansion's security system had been restored.

The person who had locked down the east wing had disappeared without leaving a trace.

No fingerprints.

No footage.

No forced entry.

It was as though the person had never existed.

That frightened Alessandro more than a visible intruder would have.

Someone understood his house.

Someone understood his security.

Someone understood him.

And someone knew exactly how to manipulate his father's secrets.

Alessandro returned to the hospital.

Sophia was awake.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw him, she immediately asked:

“Where's Emma?”

“With Rosa.”

Sophia exhaled.

Relief crossed her face.

Then she noticed Alessandro's expression.

“What happened?”

He closed the door.

“We found the nursery.”

Sophia's eyes filled with fear.

“I told you not to go there.”

“You told me nothing.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

She looked toward the window.

“From the truth.”

Alessandro pulled a chair beside the bed.

“Then tell me.”

Sophia shook her head.

“I can't.”

“You can.”

“No.”

“You're already sick because you've spent years carrying something that isn't yours.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You don't understand.”

“Then make me understand.”

Sophia looked at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Finally she whispered:

“Your father saved my life.”

Alessandro frowned.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Six years ago.”

She looked down at her hands.

“I was twenty-seven. I was working nights at a hotel in Manhattan. I was pregnant and alone.”

“Pregnant with Emma?”

Sophia nodded.

“Her father had disappeared.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

Alessandro's expression hardened.

“Then who?”

Sophia closed her eyes.

“I didn't know his real name.”

“What?”

“He called himself Adrian.”

“Adrian what?”

“I never knew.”

Alessandro leaned forward.

“Where did you meet him?”

“At the hotel.”

“Was he a guest?”

“Yes.”

“How long did you know him?”

“Three months.”

“And Emma was his daughter?”

Sophia nodded.

“I thought she was.”

“You thought?”

“He never told me who he really was.”

Alessandro stared at her.

“What did he look like?”

Sophia hesitated.

“Tall. Dark hair. Brown eyes. A scar near his chin.”

Alessandro's heart stopped.

“That's Daniel.”

“No.”

“It is.”

Sophia shook her head.

“Daniel was already dead.”

“He wasn't.”

Sophia looked at him.

Alessandro continued.

“We found his death report.”

Her face changed.

“What?”

“He was supposedly killed three days after Emma was born.”

Sophia's lips parted.

“But that's impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because I saw him.”

“When?”

“Six months later.”

Silence.

Alessandro stood.

“You saw Daniel six months after his reported death?”

Sophia nodded.

“He came to my apartment.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me to leave New York.”

“Why?”

“He said people were looking for Emma.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

“No.”

“You're protecting someone.”

Sophia began crying.

“I promised him.”

“What did you promise?”

“To keep Emma away from the Morettis.”

Alessandro froze.

“Why?”

Sophia looked directly at him.

“Because Daniel said your family wasn't safe.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Alessandro stared at Sophia.

“My family?”

“He said there was someone inside the Moretti organization.”

“Who?”

“I never knew.”

“You must have had a name.”

“No.”

“A face?”

She nodded.

“Then describe him.”

Sophia shook her head.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because if I'm wrong, someone innocent dies.”

Alessandro's expression hardened.

“And if you're right?”

“Someone dies anyway.”

He stepped closer.

“People are already in danger.”

Sophia looked at him.

“That's why I wanted you to stay away.”

“You don't get to decide that.”

“I had to.”

“You lied to me.”

“I protected Emma.”

“You hid my sister.”

Sophia's face went pale.

“You know about Elena.”

“I know enough.”

“Then you know why I was afraid.”

“I know my father lied to me.”

“He lied to everyone.”

“Why?”

“Because Elena was hunted.”

“By whom?”

Sophia whispered:

“Your uncle.”

Alessandro froze.

“My uncle died twenty years ago.”

“Not him.”

“What do you mean?”

“Your father's brother.”

“I had no uncle.”

Sophia looked at him sadly.

“That is what your father wanted you to believe.”

Alessandro left the hospital without saying goodbye.

Marco was waiting downstairs.

“Boss?”

“Take me home.”

They drove in silence.

Halfway there, Marco spoke.

“Do you believe her?”

“Yes.”

“About Elena?”

“Yes.”

“About your uncle?”

Alessandro stared out the window.

“I don't know.”

“Your father was capable of hiding a lot.”

“I know.”

“But this?”

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

“My entire childhood may have been a lie.”

Marco didn't respond.

Alessandro looked at him.

“Do you know anything about my father's brother?”

Marco shook his head.

“I've never heard the name.”

“Search the old family records.”

“I will.”

“Not digitally.”

Marco understood.

“Paper records.”

“Exactly.”

The Moretti family archives occupied three underground rooms beneath the mansion.

Alessandro had entered them only twice.

His father had kept them locked.

Most of the records were handwritten.

Old business contracts.

Birth certificates.

Property transfers.

Private correspondence.

Photographs.

Death notices.

Marco opened one cabinet after another.

Hours passed.

Finally he stopped.

“Boss.”

Alessandro looked over.

Marco held a thin leather folder.

No name.

Only a symbol.

A black circle crossed by a vertical line.

“What is it?”

“I don't know.”

He opened it.

Inside was a newspaper clipping.

The headline was faded.

MORETTI HEIR DISAPPEARS DURING FAMILY DISPUTE

Alessandro read the article.

Then stopped.

The missing heir wasn't his sister.

It was a man.

Luca Moretti.

His uncle.

His father's younger brother.

Alessandro stared.

“He existed.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

“According to this, he disappeared in 1998.”

“Why?”

Marco continued reading.

“Financial dispute. Criminal investigation. Alleged betrayal.”

Alessandro frowned.

“Alleged?”

“He was never convicted.”

“Was he ever found?”

Marco turned the page.

“No.”

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

“Then why did my father tell me I didn't have an uncle?”

Marco looked at him.

“Maybe because he was protecting you.”

“Or protecting himself.”

That evening, Emma sat in the kitchen with Rosa.

She was eating soup.

Rosa watched her carefully.

“Do you like it?”

Emma nodded.

“Mom makes better.”

“Your mother makes everything better.”

Emma smiled.

Then she asked:

“Rosa?”

“Yes?”

“Did you know my mommy before I was born?”

Rosa's spoon stopped halfway to her mouth.

“Yes.”

“How?”

Rosa looked toward the doorway.

No one was there.

She lowered her voice.

“Your mother used to work here.”

Emma frowned.

“She told me she started after I was born.”

Rosa's expression changed.

“She did.”

“Then why did you say before?”

Rosa realized her mistake.

“I meant… I met her before.”

Emma stared at her.

Children noticed inconsistencies adults ignored.

“Were you there when I was a baby?”

Rosa didn't answer.

Emma leaned closer.

“Did you know my daddy?”

Rosa's hands began trembling.

“Yes.”

Emma's eyes widened.

“What was he like?”

Rosa looked toward the stairs.

Then whispered:

“He was brave.”

“Was he nice?”

“Yes.”

“Did he love Mommy?”

Rosa swallowed.

“He loved you.”

“Only me?”

Rosa looked into the child's eyes.

“He loved your mother too.”

Emma smiled.

Then asked:

“Why did he leave?”

Rosa looked away.

“Sometimes good people disappear because bad people make them.”

Emma didn't understand.

But Rosa did.

And that was enough to make her afraid.

Later that night, Alessandro found Rosa alone in the kitchen.

“You knew.”

She closed her eyes.

“I suspected.”

“You knew Sophia before she worked here.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Elena.”

Rosa's face tightened.

“Yes.”

Alessandro stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.”

“I can't.”

“You're all saying the same thing.”

“Because we all made promises.”

“To my father?”

“Yes.”

“What did he threaten you with?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why are you still afraid?”

Rosa looked at him.

“Because your father wasn't the dangerous one.”

Alessandro went silent.

“Who was?”

Rosa whispered:

“Your mother.”

He stared at her.

“My mother died.”

“Yes.”

“Then how could she be involved?”

Rosa looked toward the hallway.

“Because some secrets survive the people who created them.”

That night, Alessandro couldn't sleep.

He sat in his father's old study.

The photograph of Elena was in front of him.

He turned it over.

The date was written in his mother's handwriting.

November 4.

Then he noticed something else.

A second line.

Almost erased.

Do not trust the woman with the blue ring.

Alessandro stared at the words.

His mother always wore a blue sapphire ring.

He remembered it.

He remembered how she used to touch his father's arm whenever she wanted him to stop talking.

He remembered her crying when Elena disappeared.

He remembered being told his sister was dead.

He remembered the nursery door being locked.

His childhood suddenly felt like a stage play.

Everyone had known the script.

Except him.

His phone rang.

Marco.

“We found Elena.”

Alessandro stood immediately.

“Where?”

“New Jersey.”

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sure?”

“I have a photograph.”

“Send it.”

The photograph arrived.

A woman stood outside a small grocery store.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

Elena.

Alessandro stared at his sister's face.

Then another message arrived.

A location.

And beneath it:

She knows who Emma's father really is.

Alessandro grabbed his coat.

Marco's voice came through the phone.

“Boss, wait.”

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The woman who photographed Elena is dead.”

Alessandro stopped.

“How?”

“Shot.”

“Where?”

“Outside her apartment.”

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

Silence.

Alessandro looked toward the nursery.

Someone had known they found Elena.

Someone had known they were searching.

Someone had killed a witness before Alessandro could reach her.

Then his phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

A photograph.

Emma.

Sleeping peacefully beside Rosa.

Alessandro's blood ran cold.

Underneath the photograph were seven words:

Stop looking, or she disappears next.

Alessandro stared at the image.

Then he slowly put the phone into his pocket.

His face became completely emotionless.

Marco knew that expression.

It meant Alessandro had stopped being curious.

Now he was angry.

Very angry.

“Marco.”

“Yes?”

“Move Emma to the safe room.”

“Already on it.”

“Double the guards.”

“Done.”

“And find whoever sent this.”

“We will.”

Alessandro looked at the photograph one final time.

Then he said quietly:

“They made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“They threatened the wrong child.”

Marco looked at him.

Alessandro's eyes were cold.

“They thought Emma was the reason I was investigating.”

He picked up his coat.

“She isn't.”

“Then what is she?”

Alessandro looked toward the east wing.

“She is family.”

And for the first time in years, Alessandro Moretti wasn't afraid of what his father's secrets might reveal.

He was afraid of what he would do to the people who had spent six years hurting an innocent child to keep those secrets buried.

The hunt had begun.

And somewhere in New Jersey, a woman named Elena Moretti was waiting for her brother.

She had waited six years.

She knew the truth about Emma's father.

And she knew something else.

Something Alessandro had not yet discovered.

May you like

The man who wanted Emma dead was not outside the Moretti family.

He was already inside it.
