CHAPTER 11

CHAPTER 11

THE PERSON BEHIND VANESSA

The explosion threw Roberto against the wall.

For a moment, there was nothing.

No sound.

No light.

No thought.

Only heat.

Then someone screamed.

"Daddy!"

Sofía.

Roberto forced his eyes open.

Smoke filled the corridor.

The emergency lights flashed red.

He saw Mateo pulling Sofía away from a collapsing ceiling panel.

Daniel was dragging Isabella toward the elevator.

Vanessa was on her knees.

And Amelia—

Amelia was gone.

Roberto's heart stopped.

"Where is Amelia?"

Nobody answered.

He pushed himself upright.

"Where is my daughter?"

Then he heard a child's voice.

"Daddy!"

Roberto turned.

Amelia stood at the end of the corridor.

Rafael had released her.

She was alone.

Crying.

Roberto ran toward her.

He grabbed her and pulled her against his chest.

"I've got you."

Amelia buried her face against him.

"I'm scared."

"I know."

"Don't let him take me."

"I won't."

Behind them, another explosion shook the building.

Rafael disappeared into the smoke.

Roberto looked toward the flames.

"You coward!"

No answer.

Then Isabella shouted:

"Roberto!"

He turned.

"Get out!"

The ceiling began collapsing.

Roberto carried Amelia.

Mateo carried Sofía.

They ran.

They reached the elevator.

Daniel hit the button.

Nothing happened.

"Power's gone."

Mateo looked toward the stairs.

"Then we climb."

"How many floors?"

"Twenty."

Roberto looked at Isabella.

She was struggling to breathe.

"You okay?"

She nodded.

"Keep moving."

They began climbing.

One floor.

Two.

Three.

Behind them, smoke climbed through the stairwell.

At the sixth floor, Isabella stopped.

"Wait."

Roberto turned.

"What?"

She looked at Vanessa.

"You."

Vanessa froze.

"What?"

Isabella's expression hardened.

"Tell him."

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not here."

"Now."

Roberto looked between them.

"Tell me what?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't choose you."

Roberto stared.

"What?"

"Vanessa."

Isabella's voice was quiet.

"You were sent to him."

Roberto froze.

"By whom?"

Vanessa looked down.

"Her."

She pointed at Elena.

Roberto's face changed.

"My grandmother."

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

Roberto looked at Isabella.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"How?"

"Because Vanessa was never interested in you."

Vanessa flinched.

Roberto stared at her.

"Is that true?"

Vanessa nodded.

"I was assigned to you."

"Why?"

"To watch you."

"Watch me for whom?"

"For Elena."

Roberto laughed bitterly.

"Seven years."

Vanessa whispered:

"I know."

"You slept beside me."

"I know."

"You told me you loved me."

"I did."

"Was any of it real?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"At first, no."

"And later?"

She began crying.

"Later, everything was real."

Roberto stared.

"Then why did you keep lying?"

Vanessa wiped her tears.

"Because by the time I wanted to tell you, Elena had something that could destroy you."

"What?"

"Your financial records."

Roberto frowned.

"That's it?"

"No."

Vanessa shook her head.

"Your medical records."

Roberto went still.

"What about them?"

"Elena knew about the disease."

"What disease?"

"The same disease Isabella carries."

Roberto's face became pale.

"How?"

"Because you inherited it."

"I don't have it."

"Not yet."

Isabella spoke softly.

"He was supposed to develop symptoms at thirty-five."

Roberto stared at her.

"I'm thirty-eight."

"Exactly."

He looked at Isabella.

"Why am I still healthy?"

She hesitated.

"Because someone altered your DNA."

Roberto's heart stopped.

"Who?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Me."

The stairwell went silent.

Roberto stared at Vanessa.

"You?"

She nodded.

"How?"

"I worked for Elena's research team."

"You were a scientist?"

"Not exactly."

"Then what?"

"I was a genetic technician."

Roberto looked at Isabella.

"You knew?"

"No."

Vanessa looked at him.

"I was ordered to give you a treatment."

"What treatment?"

"A stabilizer."

"For the disease?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Elena wanted you alive."

Roberto frowned.

"Why would she care?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because you were necessary."

"For what?"

"To produce Amelia."

Roberto froze.

"What?"

Vanessa's voice broke.

"Elena needed your DNA."

Isabella closed her eyes.

Roberto looked at her.

"You knew."

Isabella whispered:

"I knew they were studying you."

"But not why."

"No."

Vanessa continued.

"Elena wanted a child carrying your genetic markers and her mutation."

Roberto stared.

"Amelia."

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

"But Amelia is my daughter."

"Yes."

"Then why did you say she was created?"

"Because Elena created the conditions."

Roberto looked confused.

"Explain."

Vanessa took a breath.

"Elena arranged the pregnancy."

Roberto's eyes widened.

"She manipulated our fertility?"

"Yes."

"You mean..."

"She altered your reproductive treatment."

Roberto looked at Isabella.

"Is that why you were sick?"

Isabella nodded.

"She used me."

"How?"

"She needed my body to carry Amelia."

Roberto's voice broke.

"You never told me."

"I was afraid."

"Of me?"

"Of what would happen if you knew."

Vanessa looked at them.

"Elena didn't want a normal child."

Roberto stared.

"What did she want?"

"A perfect carrier."

"For the disease."

"Yes."

"And Amelia?"

"She survived."

A gunshot echoed above them.

Everyone froze.

Mateo raised his weapon.

"Someone's coming."

Vanessa looked terrified.

"It's not Rafael."

"How do you know?"

"I know that sound."

Roberto stared.

"Who?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Elena."

They continued upward.

At the tenth floor, the stairwell door burst open.

A man fired.

Mateo pushed Roberto aside.

The bullet struck the wall.

Daniel returned fire.

The attacker disappeared.

Roberto looked at Mateo.

"You okay?"

Mateo nodded.

"Keep moving."

They reached the lobby.

The abandoned hospital was filling with smoke.

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Miguel's vehicle waited outside.

They ran.

The moment they reached the street, the building behind them erupted in flames.

Roberto turned.

The windows exploded one by one.

Then the roof collapsed.

Isabella grabbed his hand.

"Don't look."

He looked anyway.

The hospital burned.

Everything inside it.

The research.

The files.

The machines.

The evidence.

Gone.

Or so they thought.

They drove to a safe house Daniel had prepared.

A small house outside the city.

No cameras.

No security system.

No connection to the Alvarez family.

For the first time in seven years, Roberto sat in a room with both his daughters.

Sofía sat beside him.

Amelia sat across from her.

They stared at each other.

Two little girls.

Two histories.

Two names.

Sofía finally spoke.

"Do you like chocolate?"

Amelia nodded.

"Yes."

"Me too."

Sofía smiled.

"Then we're sisters."

Amelia smiled back.

Roberto looked away.

He couldn't stop crying.

Isabella watched them.

Vanessa sat alone near the window.

Roberto turned toward her.

"Tell me everything."

Vanessa looked at him.

"Everything?"

"No more lies."

She nodded.

"Okay."

She took a deep breath.

"I met Elena when I was twenty-three."

"Where?"

"At a private clinic."

"What clinic?"

"The Alvarez Research Center."

"What did you do there?"

"Genetic testing."

"And Elena?"

"She recruited me."

"Why?"

"Because my mother had the disease."

Roberto's expression softened.

"She promised to cure her."

Vanessa nodded.

"She didn't."

"What happened?"

"My mother died."

"Then why did you stay?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Elena told me I could save other people."

Roberto said nothing.

"She showed me children."

"What children?"

"Children from families with inherited diseases."

"Why?"

"She was studying them."

"Treating them?"

"No."

Vanessa looked down.

"Testing them."

Roberto's voice hardened.

"What kind of tests?"

"DNA extraction."

"How many?"

"I don't know."

"Thousands?"

"Maybe."

"How many survived?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Roberto understood.

He looked at Isabella.

"How many?"

Isabella whispered:

"Too few."

Vanessa continued.

"When I discovered what Elena was really doing, I tried to leave."

"What stopped you?"

"She threatened my younger brother."

"Did he survive?"

"No."

Roberto stared.

"Elena killed him?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Then she told me I had a choice."

"What choice?"

"Work for her."

"Or?"

"She would kill everyone I loved."

Roberto looked at her.

"So you became her spy."

"Yes."

"You watched Isabella."

"Yes."

"You watched me."

"Yes."

"And Sofía."

"Yes."

"Then why did you protect her?"

Vanessa's voice broke.

"Because I couldn't watch another child die."

Roberto was silent.

Vanessa looked at Sofía.

"She reminded me of my brother."

Roberto finally asked:

"Who ordered you to hurt her?"

Vanessa looked down.

"Elena."

Roberto's jaw tightened.

"The night I came home early."

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"She wanted to know whether Sofía remembered."

"Remembered what?"

"The crash."

"And if she did?"

"She told me to silence her."

Roberto's face became cold.

"You were going to hurt my daughter."

Vanessa began crying.

"I raised my hand."

"But you didn't hit her."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because María stepped in."

Roberto looked toward the kitchen.

María was sitting quietly nearby.

Her eyes were red.

Roberto finally understood.

"María knew."

Vanessa nodded.

"She always knew."

María entered the room.

"I knew Isabella wasn't dead."

Roberto looked at her.

"How?"

"Because she called me."

"When?"

"Three days after the crash."

Roberto stared.

"What did she say?"

"She said, 'Protect my girls.'"

Roberto's eyes filled with tears.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Elena threatened Sofía."

"With what?"

"With taking her away."

María sat beside him.

"Your father had people everywhere."

Roberto shook his head.

"Rafael."

María nodded.

"But he wasn't the only one."

"Who else?"

She looked at Vanessa.

"Elena."

Suddenly Sofía spoke.

"Daddy."

Roberto turned.

"What?"

"I remember María."

Everyone went silent.

Sofía looked at the housekeeper.

"You came to the hospital."

María froze.

"Yes."

"You carried me."

María nodded.

"You told me Mommy was sleeping."

Roberto stared.

"But Isabella was dead."

María looked at him.

"She wasn't."

Sofía continued.

"You took me away."

María began crying.

"Yes."

"Where?"

"To another room."

"Why?"

"Because people were looking for you."

"Who?"

María whispered:

"Doctors."

Roberto frowned.

"Doctors?"

"Not real doctors."

"Then who?"

María looked at Vanessa.

"Elena's people."

Sofía suddenly touched her head.

Then winced.

Roberto immediately moved toward her.

"What is it?"

"My head hurts."

"Are you okay?"

She nodded.

Then whispered:

"I remember the woman."

"What woman?"

"The one in the car."

Roberto froze.

"The woman who smelled like flowers."

Sofía nodded.

"She was crying."

"What did she say?"

Sofía closed her eyes.

"She said..."

Her voice became shaky.

"Don't let Elena find the second child."

Roberto stared.

"Second child."

Sofía nodded.

"Then Mommy said..."

She paused.

"Which child?"

Sofía opened her eyes.

"Mine."

Roberto frowned.

"Yours?"

She nodded.

"Mommy said, 'They'll take her if they know she is his.'"

Roberto's heart pounded.

"Whose?"

Sofía looked toward Daniel.

Everyone turned.

Daniel froze.

Sofía whispered:

"Daniel."

The room fell silent.

Roberto looked at Daniel.

"Is Amelia your daughter?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Then why did Sofía say your name?"

Daniel stared at her.

"I don't know."

Sofía began crying.

"Daddy..."

"What?"

"I remember another man."

"Who?"

She pointed toward the door.

"He had Grandpa's ring."

Roberto looked at Vanessa.

"What ring?"

Vanessa's face went pale.

"The Alvarez signet."

"Rafael's?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"Elena's."

Roberto froze.

"Who had it?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Someone inside this house."

The safe house suddenly went dark.

The power had been cut.

Everyone froze.

Daniel reached for his weapon.

Mateo stood.

"Stay with the girls."

Roberto pulled Sofía and Amelia close.

A phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nobody moved.

Then it stopped.

A second later, Roberto's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Who is this?"

Silence.

Then a woman's voice.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

Elena.

"You have my granddaughter."

Roberto's face hardened.

"No."

"You have two."

"What do you want?"

"One of them."

"You'll get neither."

A soft laugh.

"That's not your decision."

Roberto clenched his fist.

"Where are you?"

"Closer than you think."

The line went dead.

Roberto looked around the room.

Then noticed something.

The front door was open.

Nobody had opened it.

He moved toward it.

Outside was a single envelope.

No name.

He picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

Roberto's hands began shaking.

It showed the safe house.

Taken from across the street.

The photograph had been taken minutes ago.

On the back was a message:

YOU'RE LOOKING FOR THE WRONG PERSON.

Below it:

VANESSA WAS NEVER THE THREAT.

Roberto stared.

Then another line appeared.

SHE WAS THE WARNING.

He turned toward Vanessa.

She was crying.

"I knew this day would come."

Roberto looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Elena never trusted me."

"Why?"

"Because I wasn't her only spy."

Roberto's face hardened.

"Who else?"

Vanessa looked around the room.

At María.

At Daniel.

At Mateo.

At Isabella.

Then at the two girls.

Finally, she looked directly at Roberto.

"Someone has been living inside your mansion for seven years."

Roberto froze.

"Who?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"I don't know."

"Then how do you know?"

"Because Elena told me."

"When?"

"Last night."

Roberto stared.

"What did she say?"

Vanessa whispered:

"She said the person would betray you tonight."

A sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard creaked.

Everyone turned.

Mateo raised his weapon.

"Someone's here."

Roberto moved the girls behind him.

Another creak.

Then another.

Slow footsteps descended the stairs.

One.

Two.

Three.

A shadow appeared.

Roberto's heart pounded.

The person stepped into the light.

Roberto froze.

It was someone he knew.

Someone he trusted.

Someone who had been beside his family for years.

Someone he had never once suspected.

Vanessa whispered:

"That's the person behind me."

Roberto stared.

And suddenly understood.

The greatest betrayal hadn't come from Vanessa.

It had been living in his home the entire time.

The figure smiled.

"Hello, Roberto."

He couldn't speak.

Because the person standing before him was—

María.

The woman who had protected Sofía.

The woman who had comforted her during nightmares.

The woman who had stood between Vanessa and the child.

The woman Roberto had trusted more than anyone.

María slowly lifted her hand.

On her finger was Elena Alvarez's signet ring.

Roberto stared at it.

"No."

María's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

Sofía began crying.

"María?"

María looked at her.

And for the first time, the warmth disappeared from her face.

"Forgive me."

Roberto stepped forward.

"What did you do?"

María whispered:

"I didn't betray you."

"Then what is that ring?"

She looked down at it.

"This?"

Her fingers trembled.

"It belonged to Elena."

"Why do you have it?"

María looked at Sofía.

"Because she gave it to me."

"When?"

"Seven years ago."

Roberto's face went pale.

"Why?"

María's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was the one who switched the babies."

Silence.

The room seemed to stop breathing.

Roberto stared at her.

"You..."

María nodded.

"I switched Sofía and Amelia."

Roberto stepped backward.

"Why?"

María looked at the girls.

"Because Isabella asked me to."

Roberto froze.

"What?"

María continued:

"But Isabella wasn't the woman who planned it."

"Then who was?"

María looked toward the window.

Her voice became barely audible.

"The woman who planned everything..."

A pause.

"...was not Elena."

Roberto's heart stopped.

"Then who?"

María looked directly at him.

"Your mother."

Roberto went completely still.

"My mother died when I was a child."

María shook her head.

"No."

She slowly removed the ring.

"She disappeared."

Roberto stared.

"And she's alive."

María whispered:

"She's the one who has been controlling Elena."

The room fell silent.

Then the phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID showed a name.

A name Roberto had not seen in twenty-six years.

MOTHER.

Roberto stared at the screen.

Nobody breathed.

The phone continued ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

And then Roberto answered.

A woman's voice came through the darkness.

Soft.

Calm.

Almost loving.

"Hello, Roberto."

He couldn't speak.

The woman laughed quietly.

May you like

"I've been waiting for you to remember me."

Then the line went dead.
