CHAPTER 6

CHAPTER 6

VANESSA'S FIRST LIE

The crying stopped.

That was the first thing Roberto noticed.

One second, there had been a child crying somewhere beneath the mansion.

The next—

Nothing.

Absolute silence.

Roberto stared at the floor.

"Where?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Where is she?"

Vanessa's face was pale.

"Roberto..."

"Where is the child?"

"I don't know."

"You just told me she was here."

"I said I knew where she was."

"Then tell me."

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

"Not here."

"You heard her."

"Yes."

"Then where?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"I can't."

Roberto stepped closer.

"You've been lying to me for years."

"I know."

"Then one more lie won't make a difference."

Vanessa looked at him.

"That's not my first lie."

Roberto's expression hardened.

"No."

He pointed toward the floor.

"That's what we're going to talk about."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

She looked exhausted.

Not frightened.

Not pretending.

Exhausted.

"Do you remember the first time we met?"

"Yes."

"At the charity gala."

"Yes."

"You told me you'd never seen me before."

Vanessa nodded.

"I lied."

Roberto stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because that wasn't the first time I'd seen you."

"When?"

"Seven years earlier."

His face changed.

"Where?"

"At the hospital."

Roberto went still.

"You were there?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Vanessa looked away.

"Because Isabella called me."

Roberto's voice became cold.

"My wife called you."

"Yes."

"Three days before she died?"

"Yes."

"What did she want?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"She wanted me to take Sofía."

Roberto's eyes widened.

"What?"

"She was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of your family."

"Which family member?"

Vanessa said nothing.

"Answer me."

"Your father."

Roberto stared at her.

"My father was dead."

"He wasn't."

"You said that already."

"Because it's true."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Isabella told me not to."

Roberto laughed bitterly.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I don't expect you to believe anything."

"Good."

He stepped closer.

"Then start with the truth."

Vanessa swallowed.

"All right."

She looked directly at him.

"My first lie was about your wife."

"What did you lie about?"

"I told you Isabella and I weren't close."

Roberto waited.

"We were."

"How close?"

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"She trusted me."

"Why?"

"Because I knew something about her."

"What?"

"Her secret."

"What secret?"

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

"She had another child."

Roberto's heart pounded.

"You mean the twin."

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't I know?"

"Because Isabella hid her pregnancy."

"From me?"

"From everyone."

"Why?"

"Because your father wanted the child."

Roberto's jaw tightened.

"Why?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Because she wasn't supposed to survive."

Seven years earlier.

The hospital smelled of antiseptic and rain.

Vanessa stood outside the maternity ward.

She was twenty-four years old.

She had been working for the Alvarez Foundation for almost two years.

And she had already learned one important lesson.

Rich families didn't bury secrets.

They buried people.

That night, Isabella had called her.

Her voice had been barely audible.

"Come alone."

Vanessa had asked why.

"Because I don't trust anyone else."

Vanessa arrived at the hospital at 11:40 PM.

Isabella was sitting in a wheelchair.

Her face was pale.

Her hands were shaking.

A blanket covered her legs.

Beside her was a small bag.

"Isabella?"

The woman looked up.

"You're here."

"What's happening?"

"She's coming."

"Who?"

"My daughter."

Vanessa smiled.

"I thought you weren't due for another month."

"I'm not."

"Then—"

Isabella grabbed her hand.

"Don't tell Roberto."

Vanessa froze.

"Why?"

"Because if he knows, my father-in-law will know."

Vanessa didn't understand.

"Why would that matter?"

Isabella looked at her.

"Because Rafael doesn't want a granddaughter."

"Why?"

"Because of the bloodline."

Vanessa frowned.

"What bloodline?"

Isabella shook her head.

"You wouldn't believe me."

"Try me."

Isabella looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

"Rafael has been keeping records."

"Of what?"

"Every child born into the Alvarez family."

"Why?"

"Because he believes one of them will destroy everything."

Vanessa stared.

"That's insane."

"I wish it were."

A nurse appeared.

"Mrs. Alvarez?"

Isabella turned.

"Yes?"

"We need to take you in."

Isabella looked at Vanessa.

"Stay."

Vanessa nodded.

"I will."

Before the nurse wheeled her away, Isabella grabbed Vanessa's wrist.

"If anything happens..."

"Nothing will happen."

"If something does..."

"What?"

"Take Sofía."

Vanessa froze.

"What?"

"Take my daughter."

"But Roberto—"

"Don't let him know."

"Why?"

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I don't know who I can trust."

Then the nurse wheeled her away.

Vanessa stood alone.

Twenty minutes later, the first baby was born.

A girl.

Healthy.

Six pounds.

The nurse called her Baby A.

Vanessa watched through the glass.

Isabella was crying.

Not from pain.

From relief.

Then the doctor came out.

"There is another."

Vanessa froze.

"Another what?"

"Baby."

Her heart stopped.

"Twins?"

The doctor nodded.

"But this one is in distress."

Vanessa watched through the glass.

A second baby was delivered.

Smaller.

Silent.

Pale.

The doctor moved quickly.

The nurses surrounded her.

Vanessa couldn't breathe.

Then she heard a scream.

Not from the baby.

From the hallway.

Rafael Alvarez had arrived.

He walked into the maternity ward surrounded by two men.

He looked at the babies.

Then at Isabella.

"What did you do?"

Isabella stared at him.

"What?"

"You were told."

"Told what?"

"That there would be one."

"There are two."

Rafael's face darkened.

"Take the second one."

The doctor looked shocked.

"Sir?"

"Take her."

Isabella screamed.

"No!"

Rafael turned.

"That child cannot leave this hospital."

"She's my daughter."

"She is not yours."

Isabella stared at him.

"What did you say?"

Rafael's voice was cold.

"Neither child is what you think."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Stop."

Rafael looked at her.

"You."

Vanessa froze.

"You work for my family."

"Yes."

"Then remember who pays your salary."

Vanessa swallowed.

Isabella cried.

"Please."

Rafael pointed at the second baby.

"Take her."

The nurse refused.

"No."

Rafael's men stepped forward.

Vanessa understood.

This was not a request.

It was an order.

She looked at Isabella.

Isabella was sobbing.

Then she whispered:

"Vanessa."

Vanessa moved closer.

"Take Sofía."

Vanessa looked at the first baby.

Then the second.

"Which one?"

Isabella's eyes filled with terror.

"The one they want."

Vanessa understood.

She took the first baby.

The healthy one.

Rafael's men immediately moved toward the second.

Vanessa turned.

"No."

Rafael looked at her.

"What?"

"She's not yours."

He stepped closer.

"Neither is the other one."

Vanessa looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Rafael smiled.

"You'll learn."

The memory ended.

Vanessa sat in Roberto's study.

Her hands were shaking.

Roberto stared at her.

"You took Sofía."

"Yes."

"You helped my wife hide her."

"Yes."

"From my father."

"Yes."

"Then why did you bring her back?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't."

Roberto froze.

"What?"

"I never brought Sofía back."

"Then who did?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"Your father."

Silence.

Roberto couldn't breathe.

"What are you saying?"

"After the accident, Rafael took Sofía."

"Why?"

"Because he wanted the child."

"But I found her."

"You didn't."

Roberto stared.

"What?"

"You found a child."

He stepped closer.

"Explain."

Vanessa whispered:

"The girl you brought home seven years ago was not the baby Isabella gave birth to."

Roberto's face went blank.

"That's impossible."

"Is it?"

He stared at her.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"You saw Sofía."

"Yes."

"Then how can you say she wasn't my daughter?"

"Because I saw the switch."

Roberto's blood ran cold.

"What switch?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Two babies."

She pointed toward the photograph.

"Two girls."

"The twins."

"Yes."

"Where is the other?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"That's what Rafael took."

Roberto's voice trembled.

"Then who is Sofía?"

Vanessa whispered:

"The child Rafael wanted you to raise."

Roberto couldn't move.

"Why?"

"Because Rafael needed you to believe you had lost everything."

"What?"

"He wanted you broken."

"Why?"

Vanessa looked away.

"Because a broken man is easier to control."

Roberto's fists tightened.

"My father was dead."

"No."

"He died."

"No."

"I saw his body."

Vanessa shook her head.

"You saw what they wanted you to see."

Roberto stepped back.

"Then whose body was it?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Whose?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"No."

"Then tell me the truth."

Vanessa looked at him.

"I don't know who died that night."

Roberto stared.

The room seemed to grow colder.

"Then what do you know?"

"I know Rafael survived."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

"You said he was here."

"I said he was connected to the room."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

Roberto grabbed the desk.

"Then why should I believe you?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Because I have something."

She reached into her bag.

Pulled out a small envelope.

Placed it on the desk.

Roberto opened it.

Inside was an old hospital bracelet.

He read the name.

SOFÍA ALVAREZ.

Date of birth.

Seven years ago.

Then another bracelet.

Same name.

Same date.

But different identification number.

Roberto stared.

Two bracelets.

Two Sofías.

His hands began shaking.

"Which one is my daughter?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"The answer is in the locked room."

Roberto returned to the hidden room.

This time he searched everything.

The desk.

The bed.

The photographs.

The floor.

The walls.

Nothing.

Then he noticed the old lamp.

Its base was heavier than it should have been.

He unscrewed it.

A small key fell out.

He looked at it.

Another key.

He remembered the first one.

R.A.

This one had a different engraving.

I.A.

Isabella Alvarez.

He inserted it into the desk drawer.

Click.

The drawer opened.

Inside was a small cassette recorder.

And one envelope.

On the envelope was written:

FOR ROBERTO — ONLY IF VANESSA LIES AGAIN.

Roberto's heart stopped.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then Isabella's voice.

Weak.

Terrified.

"Roberto..."

He closed his eyes.

"I don't know if you'll ever hear this."

A pause.

"If you do, it means Vanessa failed."

Roberto looked at the door.

Isabella continued.

"I need you to understand something."

"I never betrayed you."

Roberto's eyes filled with tears.

"I never stopped loving you."

The recording crackled.

"But I did lie."

Roberto held his breath.

"I lied because I had no choice."

A pause.

"Your father discovered that one of our daughters was not his granddaughter."

Roberto frowned.

"That child was born from someone outside the Alvarez bloodline."

He looked at the photographs.

Twins.

Two girls.

"Rafael believed the child would expose him."

The recording continued.

"So he made a plan."

Roberto leaned closer.

"He wanted to replace the child."

Silence.

Then Isabella whispered:

"Vanessa was supposed to help him."

Roberto's eyes widened.

"But she changed her mind."

The recording stopped.

Roberto froze.

He pressed play again.

Nothing.

He checked the tape.

The final section had been deliberately erased.

Someone had removed the ending.

But there was one final sentence recorded before the tape cut out.

Isabella whispered:

"Roberto, if you find the second room..."

Static.

"...don't trust the woman who tells you she saved our daughter."

The tape ended.

Roberto stared into the darkness.

The woman who tells you she saved our daughter.

Vanessa.

His first instinct was to confront her.

But then he remembered something.

Vanessa had never claimed to save Sofía.

She had claimed to protect her.

There was a difference.

A dangerous difference.

At dawn, Roberto found Vanessa in the chapel.

She was kneeling alone.

He stood behind her.

"Did Isabella know you would betray her?"

Vanessa didn't turn.

"Yes."

"Did she know you would lie to me?"

"Yes."

"Did she know you would become my wife?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Yes."

Roberto felt sick.

"Why?"

"Because she needed someone close to you."

"To watch me?"

"To protect you."

"From Rafael?"

"Yes."

"Then why hurt Sofía?"

Vanessa finally turned.

"I didn't."

"I saw you."

"You saw what I wanted you to see."

Roberto stared.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"The woman you saw that night wasn't angry because Sofía spilled something."

"Then why?"

"Because she was trying to make sure the cameras recorded it."

Roberto froze.

"What?"

"I needed you to see me."

"Why?"

"Because if I acted like I hated her, you would never leave her alone with me."

He stared.

"You wanted me to distrust you."

"Yes."

"Then why marry me?"

"Because Rafael needed me inside the house."

Roberto's face hardened.

"You were spying on me."

"Yes."

"For seven years?"

"Yes."

"And now?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"Now I want out."

"Too late."

"I know."

Roberto stepped closer.

"Tell me one thing."

"What?"

"Who is the real Sofía?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"No."

"Then who does?"

Vanessa looked toward the chapel door.

"Elena."

Roberto froze.

"Where is she?"

Vanessa whispered:

"She's been trying to reach you for seven years."

"Why didn't she?"

"Because Rafael found her."

"Is she alive?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

"Where?"

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"Under the mansion."

Roberto turned.

"What?"

"The second room."

His heart stopped.

"Then let's open it."

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because if you open it..."

She looked terrified.

"...you'll find out why your father wanted Sofía."

Roberto pulled his arm away.

"I already know what he wanted."

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

"What?"

"He didn't want Sofía."

Roberto froze.

"He wanted what was inside her."

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Something Isabella hid inside her before she died."

Roberto stared.

"What?"

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

"The truth."

By sunrise, Miguel had finished studying the mansion blueprints.

He entered Roberto's study.

"Sir."

"What did you find?"

Miguel placed the plans on the desk.

"There are three hidden spaces."

Roberto looked at him.

"Three?"

"Yes."

"I found one."

"There's another beneath the east wing."

"And the third?"

Miguel hesitated.

"Under your bedroom."

Roberto stared.

"My bedroom?"

"Yes."

"What's there?"

"We don't know."

"Why?"

"Because the entrance was sealed."

Roberto looked at the blueprint.

A hidden chamber.

Directly beneath the room where he and Vanessa had slept for years.

He suddenly understood why Vanessa had been so interested in his sleeping habits.

Why she always insisted on certain rooms being locked.

Why she never allowed staff to enter the east wing.

She had been protecting something.

Or someone.

Roberto looked at Vanessa.

"You knew."

She didn't deny it.

"Yes."

"What's beneath my bedroom?"

Vanessa whispered:

"The beginning."

"The beginning of what?"

"The reason Isabella died."

Roberto stared at her.

Then Miguel interrupted.

"Sir."

"What?"

"We found something else."

"What?"

Miguel handed him a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Taken inside the mansion.

Roberto stared.

It showed a woman standing in the hidden passage.

Older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

Elena Vargas.

Alive.

And beside her stood a little girl.

A girl about seven years old.

With the same dark hair as Sofía.

The same face.

The same small hands.

Roberto's heart stopped.

On the back of the photograph was written:

SHE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.

Roberto looked at Vanessa.

"What have you done?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Nothing."

Then, from somewhere beneath the floor, came a child's voice.

"Daddy?"

Roberto went completely still.

It was Sofía's voice.

But Sofía was standing beside him.

He turned.

His daughter was still there.

Holding María's hand.

Then the voice came again.

"Daddy..."

From beneath the floor.

A second Sofía.

A second daughter.

A second life.

Roberto looked down.

The floorboards trembled.

And beneath them, something unlocked.

One heavy click.

Then another.

Then a third.

The hidden door beneath the mansion began to open.

Vanessa backed away.

"Roberto..."

He looked at her.

"What?"

Her voice shook.

"Now you will finally meet the child I was ordered to erase."

The door opened.

Darkness waited below.

May you like

And somewhere in that darkness, a little girl whispered:

"Why did it take you seven years to come find me?"
