CHAPTER 12

CHAPTER 12

THE SECRET HER MOTHER DIED FOR

The phone slipped from Roberto's hand.

It hit the floor.

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the faint hum of the emergency generator.

Then Sofía whispered:

"Daddy?"

Roberto didn't answer.

He was staring at the phone.

At the name still glowing on the screen.

MOTHER.

A name that had not appeared in his life for twenty-six years.

A name belonging to a woman he had watched disappear.

A woman everyone had told him was dead.

His mother.

Isabel Alvarez.

Vanessa was crying.

María stood motionless near the stairs.

Mateo looked as if someone had struck him.

Daniel slowly lowered his weapon.

Then Isabella spoke.

"Roberto."

He finally looked at her.

"She said my name."

"I heard."

"She sounded exactly the same."

Isabella nodded.

"Because she is alive."

Roberto shook his head.

"No."

"She is."

"My mother died."

"No."

"I saw her body."

Isabella's expression changed.

"Did you?"

Roberto froze.

The same question.

The same terrible doubt.

He had heard it before.

From Mateo.

From Rafael.

From everyone who had spent seven years tearing apart his understanding of reality.

He looked at María.

"You said my mother disappeared."

María nodded.

"Yes."

"You knew she was alive?"

"I suspected."

"That's not what you said."

"I didn't know where she was."

"Who did?"

María looked toward Isabella.

"She did."

Roberto turned.

"Isabella?"

His wife nodded.

"Your mother contacted me before the crash."

Roberto stared.

"When?"

"Three months before."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because she made me promise."

"What promise?"

"That I would never tell you until the right time."

"And when is the right time?"

Isabella looked toward the two girls.

"Now."

Roberto sat down.

His hands were shaking.

"Tell me everything."

Isabella looked at María.

Then Vanessa.

Then Mateo.

"Your mother wasn't just hiding."

"What was she doing?"

"Protecting something."

"What?"

"A child."

Roberto frowned.

"Which child?"

Isabella's eyes moved toward Amelia.

"Not Amelia."

Then toward Sofía.

"Not Sofía."

Roberto stared.

"Then who?"

Isabella whispered:

"Me."

Silence.

Roberto's breathing stopped.

"What?"

"Your mother wasn't protecting a child."

She swallowed.

"She was protecting me."

Twenty years earlier.

Before the mansion.

Before the empire.

Before Vanessa.

Before the crash.

Before Sofía.

Isabel Alvarez had already discovered the secret that would eventually destroy the family.

She discovered it in an old medical archive belonging to her husband's father.

At first, she believed it was simply evidence of corruption.

Illegal experiments.

Children.

DNA.

Missing records.

Then she found her own name.

Not as a patient.

Not as a mother.

As a subject.

She had been monitored since childhood.

Her blood had been tested.

Her reproductive health had been tracked.

Her pregnancies had been recorded.

Every illness.

Every genetic marker.

Every weakness.

Everything.

She realized something terrifying.

Her entire marriage had been part of the experiment.

Rafael hadn't married her because he loved her.

He had married her because of her blood.

She carried a rare genetic trait.

A trait the Alvarez family had spent decades trying to obtain.

And when she became pregnant with Roberto, they finally had their chance.

But Isabel did something they hadn't expected.

She secretly contacted a doctor outside the family.

The doctor tested Roberto.

And discovered something impossible.

Roberto didn't carry the Alvarez disease.

He had something else.

A genetic mutation inherited from his real father.

Alejandro Reyes.

The Reyes bloodline.

The enemy bloodline.

The bloodline Rafael had spent his entire life trying to destroy.

Isabel realized the truth.

Roberto wasn't an Alvarez heir.

He was the biological son of Alejandro Reyes.

And Rafael knew.

That's why Rafael had raised him.

Not as a son.

As a weapon.

Roberto listened without speaking.

When Isabella finished, he looked at her.

"My father knew?"

"Yes."

"Rafael knew?"

"Yes."

"My mother knew?"

"Yes."

"Then why did nobody tell me?"

Isabella's voice broke.

"Because your mother believed the truth would get you killed."

Roberto looked down.

"She protected me."

"Yes."

"Then why disappear?"

"Because Rafael found out she had discovered the records."

Roberto closed his eyes.

"What did he do?"

"He threatened you."

"How?"

"He told her that if she ever exposed him, he would destroy you."

Roberto's hands clenched.

"So she left."

"Yes."

"And everyone said she died."

"Rafael arranged it."

"Who was the body?"

Isabella hesitated.

"Your mother's sister."

Roberto opened his eyes.

"What?"

"She volunteered."

"Why?"

"To save her."

Roberto stared.

Another dead person.

Another false funeral.

Another lie.

His entire childhood had been built on graves containing strangers.

He laughed bitterly.

"So nobody in my family ever really died."

Isabella looked at him.

"Some did."

"Who?"

She didn't answer.

Roberto already knew.

"The people who knew too much."

María finally spoke.

"Your mother gave me the ring."

Roberto looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because I was supposed to protect you."

"From Elena?"

"From everyone."

"You worked for Elena."

"Yes."

"Then why protect me?"

María looked at Sofía.

"Because your mother asked me."

Roberto frowned.

"My mother knew you?"

"Long before you did."

"When?"

"When I worked for your grandfather."

Roberto stared.

"You worked for my grandfather too?"

"Yes."

"What did you do?"

"Housekeeping."

"And secretly?"

María lowered her eyes.

"I carried messages."

"Between whom?"

"Your mother and the Reyes family."

Roberto went still.

"She was working with the Reyes family?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Alejandro was your biological father."

Daniel looked away.

Roberto turned toward him.

"You knew."

Daniel nodded.

"My father told me before he died."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because your mother asked me not to."

Roberto laughed.

"Of course."

He stood.

"Everyone had a reason."

His voice cracked.

"Everyone had a promise."

He looked at the girls.

"And I was the only person who knew nothing."

Isabella rose slowly.

"No."

Roberto looked at her.

"You knew something."

"What?"

"Enough to keep loving them."

She looked toward Sofía and Amelia.

"You never stopped being their father."

Roberto's eyes filled with tears.

"Even when everyone else kept changing their names."

María walked toward a small cabinet.

She opened it.

Inside was a wooden box.

She brought it to Roberto.

"Your mother left this."

Roberto stared.

"Why didn't you give it to me?"

"Because she told me not to."

"When?"

"Until you found the girls."

Roberto opened the box.

Inside were letters.

Dozens of them.

All addressed to him.

The first was dated twenty-six years earlier.

His hands shook as he opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

His mother's.

My son,

If you are reading this, then the family has finally failed to hide the truth.

Roberto stopped.

His eyes filled with tears.

He continued.

You will probably hate me.

You will probably hate your father.

You may even hate yourself.

Don't.

None of this was your fault.

He swallowed.

The next line made his heart pound.

The secret I am protecting is not about money.

It is not about the Alvarez name.

It is not even about blood.

It is about a child.

Roberto looked at Isabella.

"Which child?"

She shook her head.

He did.

One day, a girl will be born who can expose everything.

They will call her sick.

They will call her dangerous.

They will call her an experiment.

They will try to take her away.

But she is none of those things.

She is proof.

Roberto's hands trembled.

The next page was stained.

As if someone had cried over it.

She carries the truth of what they did.

And she carries the cure.

Roberto froze.

"The cure."

Isabella nodded.

His mother continued:

If they ever discover that she survived, they will come for her.

They will tell you that you must choose between your daughters.

Do not believe them.

That is the final test.

Roberto stared.

"Final test."

He read the next sentence.

The real target was never the child.

The real target was you.

His heart stopped.

"What?"

Daniel stepped closer.

Roberto continued.

They need your blood.

Not because you are an Alvarez.

Because you are not.

You are the bridge between two bloodlines.

Alvarez and Reyes.

The disease exists because those bloodlines were kept apart.

The cure exists because they were finally brought together.

Roberto looked up.

"Amelia."

Isabella nodded.

"Yes."

He continued.

Amelia is not the cure.

Her blood is not the cure.

She is the key.

But the cure requires you.

Roberto's face went pale.

"What does that mean?"

Isabella whispered:

"It means your blood can neutralize the mutation."

Roberto stared at her.

"Then why did Elena want Amelia?"

"Because she believed she could force the cure through her."

"How?"

"By using Amelia's cells."

"And me?"

"She needed you alive."

Roberto looked at the letter.

His mother had written:

They will make you believe they want your daughters.

They don't.

They want you.

Your daughters are leverage.

Roberto slowly lowered the letter.

"So every kidnapping..."

"Was about me," Isabella said.

"Every lie..."

"Was about protecting you."

"Every test..."

"Was trying to locate your genetic marker."

Roberto looked toward Amelia.

"And the disease?"

Isabella nodded.

"Was never natural."

Roberto froze.

"What?"

"It was engineered."

Silence.

"By whom?"

Isabella's voice became almost inaudible.

"Your grandfather."

The room went still.

Roberto stared.

"My grandfather created the disease?"

"Not exactly."

"Then what?"

"He modified it."

"Why?"

"To control the bloodline."

Roberto shook his head.

"This can't be real."

"It is."

"Why would anyone do that?"

"Because the Alvarez family had lost control of its inheritance."

"How?"

"Your grandfather's brother discovered the original mutation."

"The disease."

"Yes."

"He tried to destroy it."

"What happened?"

"He was killed."

"By whom?"

"Your grandfather."

Roberto looked at the letter.

His mother had written:

The disease was designed to eliminate heirs who did not possess the correct genetic markers.

Your grandfather believed he could create a perfect family.

He was wrong.

The mutation evolved.

It began affecting women.

Then children.

Then everyone.

Roberto's hands shook.

"So they created something they couldn't control."

"Yes."

"And Amelia inherited it."

"Yes."

"But you said she isn't sick."

"Not yet."

"Because she's seven."

Isabella nodded.

"At eight, the mutation begins."

Roberto looked at Sofía.

"What about her?"

"She carries part of it."

"But she's healthy."

"Because Isabella's mother found a way to suppress it."

Roberto stared at María.

"Your mother?"

María nodded.

"She was the original researcher."

Roberto's eyes widened.

"The woman in the photograph."

"Yes."

"The woman who was in the car."

María nodded.

"She knew the cure."

"Then why didn't she save everyone?"

María's eyes filled with tears.

"Because she died."

Roberto's voice softened.

"How?"

"Protecting Isabella."

The memory came back to Sofía.

She suddenly stood.

"Daddy."

Roberto turned.

"What?"

She looked toward the window.

"The flowers."

"What?"

"I remember the flowers."

"What flowers?"

"The woman's perfume."

Roberto crouched.

"What about it?"

Sofía closed her eyes.

"She was in the car."

"Your grandmother?"

She nodded.

"What did she say?"

Sofía trembled.

"She told Mommy..."

A pause.

"...the cure was inside the bracelet."

Roberto froze.

"The bracelet?"

Sofía nodded.

"She gave Mommy something."

"What?"

"I don't know."

Roberto looked at Isabella.

"Did you have a bracelet?"

Isabella shook her head.

"No."

Sofía suddenly whispered:

"Not Mommy."

She pointed at Amelia.

"Her."

Everyone turned.

Amelia looked confused.

Roberto crouched.

"What about her?"

Sofía pointed to Amelia's wrist.

"Her bracelet."

Roberto looked.

The hospital bracelet was still there.

The old one.

The one Daniel had brought.

Roberto carefully removed it.

Inside the plastic band was something tiny.

A metal capsule.

He opened it.

Inside was a microfilm strip.

Daniel's face changed.

"No."

Roberto looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel stared at the capsule.

"That's impossible."

"Why?"

"That was destroyed."

"What is it?"

Daniel swallowed.

"The original research."

Roberto stared.

"The cure?"

Daniel nodded.

"The complete formula."

Everyone went silent.

Roberto looked toward Amelia.

"The cure was with her the entire time."

Isabella shook her head.

"No."

"What?"

"That isn't the cure."

"Then what is it?"

She stared at the capsule.

"The location."

Roberto frowned.

"Location of what?"

Isabella's eyes widened.

"The original laboratory."

"Where?"

She whispered:

"Under the Alvarez cemetery."

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Roberto looked at the table.

It wasn't his.

It was Vanessa's.

She stared at the screen.

Unknown number.

"No."

Roberto looked at her.

"Answer it."

"I can't."

"Answer it."

Vanessa slowly pressed the button.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice came through.

"Did he find the capsule?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Roberto immediately knew.

"Who is this?"

Silence.

Then:

"You should ask Vanessa."

Roberto took the phone.

"Who are you?"

The woman laughed.

"You still don't recognize my voice."

Roberto's blood ran cold.

It was the same voice from earlier.

His mother.

"Mom?"

"Hello, my son."

He gripped the phone.

"Where are you?"

"Somewhere you have already been."

"Tell me."

"You have the key."

"What key?"

"The capsule."

Roberto looked at it.

"What do you want?"

"I want you to bring it to the cemetery."

"Why?"

"Because your father is going there."

"Rafael?"

"No."

Her voice became colder.

"Your biological father."

Roberto froze.

"Alejandro?"

"No."

Silence.

Then:

"The man you called father all your life."

Roberto's heart stopped.

"Rafael."

"Yes."

"But he's not my father."

"No."

"Then why call him that?"

"Because he knows where Alejandro is."

Roberto's blood ran cold.

"You said Alejandro died."

"I lied."

"Where is he?"

His mother whispered:

"Under the cemetery."

Roberto stared at the phone.

"The laboratory."

"Yes."

"He's alive?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't he come for me?"

Silence.

A long silence.

Then his mother said:

"Because he was never allowed to."

"By whom?"

"By me."

Roberto's face went pale.

"You kept my father away from me?"

"I had to."

"Why?"

"Because he knows the final secret."

"What secret?"

His mother's voice cracked.

"The identity of the woman who caused the crash."

Roberto stopped breathing.

"Who?"

"Come to the cemetery."

"Tell me now."

"No."

"Mom."

"I want you to see her."

"Who?"

His mother whispered:

"The woman who was driving the car."

Roberto's entire body went cold.

"Isabella was driving."

"No."

He looked at his wife.

She had gone pale.

His mother continued:

"Isabella wasn't driving."

Roberto stared.

"Then who was?"

The voice on the phone became almost a whisper.

"Your mother."

The call ended.

Roberto stood frozen.

He looked at Isabella.

She was crying.

"Is it true?"

She couldn't answer.

"Isabella."

She lowered her head.

"I was in the passenger seat."

Roberto's heart shattered.

"Who was driving?"

Isabella looked at him.

"The woman who planned everything."

Roberto whispered:

"My mother."

Isabella nodded.

"Yes."

For the first time that night, María began to cry.

Roberto looked at her.

"You knew."

María shook her head.

"Not everything."

"But you knew she was there."

"Yes."

"Why did she crash the car?"

María whispered:

"She didn't."

Roberto froze.

"What?"

"The crash was caused by another vehicle."

"Then why was she driving?"

"Because she was trying to save you."

"From Rafael?"

María shook her head.

"From herself."

Roberto stared.

"What does that mean?"

María looked at the two girls.

"Your mother knew she was being followed."

"By whom?"

"By Rafael."

"Then why drive?"

"Because she had the cure."

Roberto looked at the capsule.

"She was taking it somewhere."

"Yes."

"Where?"

"To Alejandro."

Roberto's heart pounded.

"Then the crash..."

"Wasn't planned."

"What happened?"

María whispered:

"Your mother swerved to avoid killing someone."

"Who?"

"A little girl."

Roberto stared.

"What girl?"

María looked at Amelia.

"Her."

Silence.

Roberto looked at Amelia.

The little girl stared back.

Then slowly lifted her wrist.

The bracelet glimmered.

And Roberto finally understood.

The child had not been the target of the crash.

She had been the reason for it.

His mother had sacrificed herself to save Amelia.

But someone else had been in the car.

Someone who knew where the cure was.

Someone who had survived.

And someone who had spent seven years manipulating every person in Roberto's life.

Roberto looked at Isabella.

"You said the woman who planned everything wasn't Elena."

Isabella nodded.

"Then it was my mother."

"No."

Roberto froze.

Isabella shook her head.

"Your mother planned the escape."

"Then who planned the crash?"

Isabella looked toward the door.

Her voice became a whisper.

"The person who knew exactly where we would be."

"Who?"

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

"Vanessa."

Roberto turned.

Vanessa stood frozen.

"No."

Roberto stared at her.

"You caused the crash?"

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"No."

"Then why did Isabella say your name?"

"I didn't cause it."

"Who did?"

Vanessa's lips trembled.

She looked at María.

Then Daniel.

Then Mateo.

Finally, she looked at Roberto.

"I know who did."

"Who?"

Vanessa whispered:

"The person who gave me the order."

Roberto stepped closer.

"Who?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

And said the name.

A name that made every person in the room go silent.

"Rafael."

Roberto frowned.

"Rafael caused the crash?"

"No."

Vanessa shook her head.

"Rafael gave the order."

"To whom?"

Vanessa opened her eyes.

"He didn't know I would refuse."

Roberto stared.

"Refuse what?"

Vanessa's voice broke.

"To kill Isabella."

Silence.

"Then who did?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Someone else took my place."

Roberto's face went pale.

"Who?"

Vanessa looked toward the window.

"I never saw her face."

"Then how do you know?"

"Because of the perfume."

Roberto froze.

"What perfume?"

"Flowers."

Sofía suddenly gasped.

The same scent.

The same woman.

The woman who had been in the car.

The woman who had caused the crash.

Roberto's mother's perfume.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"She wasn't your mother."

Roberto froze.

"What?"

Vanessa whispered:

"Your mother wasn't driving."

"Then who was?"

Vanessa looked at the capsule.

Then at Amelia.

Then finally at Roberto.

"The woman driving the car..."

She swallowed.

"...was Isabella's mother."

The room went silent.

Roberto stared.

"She's dead."

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

"Where is she?"

Vanessa's face turned white.

"She's been alive."

"Where?"

"Under the cemetery."

Roberto stared.

The laboratory.

The cure.

Alejandro.

His mother.

Isabella's mother.

Everything was converging.

And somewhere beneath the graves of the Alvarez family, someone had been waiting for seven years.

Waiting for Roberto to finally come looking.

Roberto picked up the capsule.

"We're going to the cemetery."

Isabella grabbed his arm.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because that's exactly what they want."

"Who?"

She looked at the girls.

"Everyone."

Roberto frowned.

"Everyone?"

Isabella nodded.

"Rafael."

"Elena."

"Your mother."

"Daniel."

"Vanessa."

"Even me."

Roberto stared.

"What are you saying?"

Isabella whispered:

"The person behind all of this isn't one person."

"It's a family."

Roberto's face hardened.

"And tonight..."

She looked toward the darkness outside.

"...we're finally walking into the center of it."

Far away, beneath the old Alvarez cemetery, a metal door opened.

A woman stepped into a hidden laboratory.

She placed a photograph on a table.

It showed Roberto.

Sofía.

Amelia.

And Isabella.

She touched the photograph of Roberto.

"My son."

Then she looked at another photograph.

A photograph of Rafael.

Her expression became cold.

"You were never supposed to survive."

A man stepped out of the shadows.

"He's coming."

The woman nodded.

"Good."

"Should we stop him?"

She smiled.

"No."

She picked up a small glass vial.

Inside was a clear liquid.

"The boy has spent his whole life looking for the truth."

She turned toward the underground chamber.

"Tonight, I'll finally give it to him."

The man hesitated.

"And the girls?"

The woman looked toward two sealed doors.

Behind one was a medical chamber.

Behind the other was a child.

She smiled.

"Let him choose."

Then she whispered:

"Because the secret his mother died for..."

She looked at the vial.

"...isn't the cure."

She opened the door.

"It's the truth about who really survived the crash."

May you like

The door closed.

And somewhere in the darkness, a little girl began to cry.
