CHAPTER 8

CHAPTER 8

THE NIGHT OF THE CRASH

The door opened three inches.

Roberto did not move.

Neither did Miguel.

Vanessa stood frozen beside the wall, her face drained of color.

Sofía held Roberto's hand so tightly that her fingernails pressed into his skin.

Then the door opened another inch.

A shadow appeared.

Tall.

Motionless.

Roberto's breathing stopped.

He had spent seven years believing that the night of the crash had taken everything from him.

His wife.

His daughter's sight.

His peace.

His family.

Now, standing in the darkness beyond that door, was a man who supposedly belonged to a grave.

A man Roberto had mourned since childhood.

"Mateo?"

The shadow did not answer.

Roberto stepped forward.

"Is it really you?"

A low voice came from the darkness.

"You finally remember my name."

Roberto's heart hammered.

The man stepped into the light.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar crossed the left side of his face.

But the eyes—

Roberto knew those eyes.

His brother's eyes.

The same dark eyes that had watched him from the back seat of their father's car when they were children.

The same eyes that had once followed Roberto everywhere.

The same eyes he had seen for the last time twenty years ago.

Roberto whispered:

"You're alive."

Mateo smiled sadly.

"Yes."

Roberto's knees nearly gave out.

"That's impossible."

"So was everything else you believed."

Mateo looked at Sofía.

She immediately moved behind Roberto.

Mateo's expression changed.

"I remember her."

Roberto stepped between them.

"Don't come near my daughter."

Mateo stopped.

"I wasn't going to."

"You said you were my brother."

"I am."

"My brother died."

"No."

"Father showed me the body."

Mateo's smile disappeared.

"Father showed you a body."

Roberto stared.

"Whose?"

Mateo didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa.

"You told him?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not everything."

Mateo sighed.

"Of course."

Roberto looked between them.

"You both knew."

Neither answered.

"You both knew my brother was alive."

Vanessa whispered:

"Yes."

Roberto's voice became dangerously quiet.

"For how long?"

"Seven years."

He laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"Seven years."

He looked at Mateo.

"You watched me grieve."

Mateo lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

"You watched me bury you."

"I know."

"You watched me visit your grave."

"I know."

"You watched me raise Sofía."

"Yes."

"And you said nothing."

Mateo's eyes hardened.

"Because if I had, she would have died."

Roberto went silent.

"What?"

Mateo looked toward the corridor.

"Your father wasn't trying to hurt you."

"Then what was he doing?"

"Controlling you."

"Why?"

"Because you were the only person who could expose him."

Roberto frowned.

"Expose him for what?"

Mateo looked at Vanessa.

She whispered:

"The crash."

Roberto's face changed.

"What about it?"

Mateo took a breath.

"The crash wasn't an accident."

Silence.

The words seemed to erase the air from the room.

Roberto shook his head.

"No."

Mateo continued.

"Your car was sabotaged."

Roberto stared.

"Who did it?"

Mateo looked at Sofía.

Then at Roberto.

"Rafael."

Roberto's blood ran cold.

"My father killed Isabella?"

"He didn't intend to kill her."

"Then what did he intend?"

"To take the babies."

Roberto stared.

"What babies?"

Mateo's voice lowered.

"The twins."

Twenty years earlier.

Before Roberto became a businessman.

Before the mansion.

Before Vanessa.

Before Sofía.

Before Isabella.

There had been two brothers.

Roberto and Mateo.

And a father who believed family was not something you loved.

It was something you owned.

Rafael Alvarez had built his empire through fear.

His sons had learned early that obedience was easier than resistance.

Roberto obeyed.

Mateo rebelled.

That difference nearly destroyed them.

When Mateo was sixteen, he discovered a locked room beneath the family estate.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

DNA reports.

Family trees.

Photographs.

And names.

Hundreds of names.

Children born into the Alvarez family.

Children adopted.

Children who disappeared.

Children who had been declared dead.

Mateo didn't understand.

Until he found one file.

His own.

Inside was a medical report.

MATERNAL IDENTIFICATION: UNKNOWN.

He confronted Rafael.

His father slapped him.

Then told him something he never forgot.

"Blood doesn't matter."

Mateo stared at him.

"Then why do you keep records?"

Rafael smiled.

"Because blood gives people power."

"What power?"

"The power to inherit."

"And?"

"The power to destroy."

Mateo didn't understand.

Rafael leaned closer.

"One day, one child will be born who can take everything from this family."

Mateo laughed.

"That's insane."

Rafael didn't laugh.

"That child must never live."

Years passed.

Mateo left home.

Roberto stayed.

They became strangers.

Until Isabella arrived.

She changed everything.

She saw through Rafael immediately.

She didn't fear him.

That frightened him.

When Isabella became pregnant, Rafael began watching her.

Then the doctors discovered something.

Twins.

Two girls.

One genetically connected to the Alvarez bloodline.

The other wasn't.

Rafael became obsessed.

He believed the non-Alvarez child was the threat.

But there was another secret.

The twins were not identical.

And their biological fathers were different.

One belonged to Roberto.

The other belonged to Rafael's enemy.

Daniel Reyes.

Rafael knew.

Isabella knew.

Mateo eventually discovered the truth.

And he tried to stop his father.

That was when Rafael made him disappear.

Roberto stared at his brother.

"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"

Mateo's face tightened.

"Because Rafael threatened Sofía."

"Where were you?"

"Watching."

"Watching what?"

"The house."

"The hospital?"

"Yes."

"The funeral?"

"Yes."

"The accident?"

Mateo looked away.

"Yes."

Roberto's voice broke.

"You were there."

"I was."

"Then why didn't you stop it?"

Mateo closed his eyes.

"I tried."

"Try harder."

"I couldn't."

"You were my brother."

"I know."

"You should have saved her."

"I know."

Roberto stepped closer.

"Tell me what happened."

Mateo looked at him.

"The night of the crash."

It had been raining.

Hard.

The road was nearly empty.

Isabella was driving.

Roberto sat beside her.

In the back seat were the babies.

Two infant car seats.

Sofía.

And Lucía.

Roberto didn't know that.

He thought there was only one baby.

The second had been hidden beneath a blanket.

Isabella had insisted on driving.

Roberto had asked why.

She said she needed to take Sofía to the doctor.

It was a lie.

She was trying to get both children away from Rafael.

She knew someone was following them.

She had seen the black SUV twice.

Then a third time.

Roberto looked in the mirror.

"Do you know that car?"

Isabella shook her head.

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Keep driving."

Her voice trembled.

Roberto reached for her hand.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

"Isabella."

She looked at him.

"Promise me something."

"What?"

"If anything happens..."

He smiled.

"Nothing is going to happen."

"Promise."

"I promise."

She looked toward the back seat.

"Protect her."

Roberto turned.

The baby was sleeping.

"What are you talking about?"

"Nothing."

The SUV accelerated.

Isabella noticed.

"Roberto."

"I see it."

The SUV moved into their lane.

Then suddenly—

A violent impact.

The car spun.

Glass shattered.

Metal screamed.

Roberto's head struck the window.

Isabella lost control.

The car crashed through the barrier.

Then rolled.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The world became noise.

Then darkness.

Mateo stood on the opposite side of the road.

He had been following Rafael.

He saw the crash.

He ran.

The car was upside down.

Fuel leaked onto the pavement.

Isabella was trapped.

Roberto was unconscious.

One baby was crying.

The other was silent.

Mateo pulled Roberto out first.

Then Isabella.

Then the crying baby.

He returned for the second.

But someone grabbed him.

Rafael.

"Leave her."

Mateo fought him.

"She's a baby."

"She belongs to me."

"She's not yours."

Rafael struck him.

The baby cried.

Then another car arrived.

Daniel Reyes.

Everything changed.

Daniel rushed toward the wreck.

Rafael shouted:

"Take the child!"

Daniel grabbed the baby.

Mateo stared.

"Which one?"

Rafael pointed.

"The one with the Alvarez bracelet."

Mateo looked.

The bracelet read:

SOFÍA ALVAREZ.

He realized the truth.

Rafael had already switched the bracelets.

He was taking the wrong child.

Mateo grabbed the baby.

"You're making a mistake."

Rafael smiled.

"That's exactly what I want."

Back in the hidden room, Roberto stared at Mateo.

"You let him take her?"

"No."

"Then where is she?"

Mateo looked at Sofía.

"With you."

Roberto froze.

"What?"

"The baby Rafael wanted was never Lucía."

"What?"

"Rafael believed Sofía was the dangerous child."

"But she wasn't."

"No."

"Then who was?"

Mateo's expression became grim.

"Lucía."

Roberto's heart stopped.

"Why?"

"Because Lucía carried something Rafael feared."

"What?"

Mateo reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small photograph.

It showed Isabella holding a newborn baby.

On the baby's wrist was a tiny bracelet.

Not Sofía.

Not Lucía.

A third name.

Roberto stared.

"What is that?"

Mateo said:

"The DNA Rafael spent his life trying to destroy."

Roberto looked closer.

Then his face went pale.

The name on the bracelet was:

MATEO ALVAREZ.

He looked up.

"What?"

Mateo whispered:

"That's why he wanted me dead."

Roberto shook his head.

"You're her father?"

Mateo didn't answer.

Roberto stared.

"Lucía is your daughter?"

Mateo's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

The room fell silent.

Sofía whispered:

"Uncle Mateo?"

Mateo looked at her.

"Yes."

"You are my uncle."

He smiled sadly.

"And your father."

Sofía froze.

Roberto couldn't move.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then Roberto understood.

The entire family history had been built on a lie.

Rafael had wanted Lucía because she carried Mateo's blood.

Mateo had been declared dead because Rafael feared his son would expose him.

Isabella had hidden Lucía because she knew Rafael would use her.

And Roberto had raised Sofía because everyone had believed she was the child Rafael wanted.

But there was still one question.

Where was Lucía now?

Roberto looked at Mateo.

"Where is my daughter?"

Mateo lowered his head.

"I don't know."

"You said she was alive."

"She was."

"Where is she?"

"I lost her."

"When?"

"Seven years ago."

Roberto grabbed him.

"You lost my daughter?"

"I was trying to save her."

"From whom?"

Mateo's voice broke.

"From your father."

Roberto released him.

"What happened?"

Mateo looked toward the nursery.

"After the crash, I took Lucía."

"You had her?"

"For three days."

"Then?"

"Rafael found us."

"Where?"

"An old farmhouse."

"What did he do?"

Mateo looked at Sofía.

"I had to choose."

Roberto's face hardened.

"Choose what?"

"Which child to save."

Silence.

Roberto's voice became barely audible.

"And you chose?"

Mateo closed his eyes.

"Lucía."

"Then where is she?"

"I gave her to Elena."

Roberto froze.

"Elena."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Rafael was watching me."

"So Elena took her."

"Yes."

"And then?"

"She disappeared."

"With Lucía."

"Yes."

Roberto's heart sank.

"Where?"

Mateo shook his head.

"I don't know."

A sound came from the corridor.

Footsteps.

Everyone turned.

Mateo raised his weapon.

"Someone's here."

The footsteps stopped.

Then a woman's voice called:

"Mateo."

He froze.

Roberto recognized it.

"Elena?"

The door opened.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Wet from the rain.

Her face was exhausted.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

Elena Vargas.

Alive.

Roberto stared.

"You."

Elena looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For taking your daughter."

Roberto stepped forward.

"Where is she?"

Elena looked at Sofía.

Then at Mateo.

Then back at Roberto.

"I came here to tell you."

"Tell me what?"

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"Lucía is alive."

Roberto could barely breathe.

"Where?"

Elena hesitated.

Then whispered:

"She's been living under another name."

"What name?"

Elena looked at Sofía.

"Sofía."

The room went silent.

Roberto stared at his daughter.

Elena continued:

"The child you think is Sofía..."

She pointed toward the nursery.

"...is Lucía."

Roberto's face went white.

"What?"

Elena shook her head.

"Isabella switched them before the crash."

Roberto looked at Mateo.

Mateo closed his eyes.

Elena continued:

"Rafael took the wrong baby."

Roberto's heart pounded.

"So where is the other child?"

Elena looked at him.

"The other child was taken by Daniel Reyes."

"Where?"

"That's the problem."

"What problem?"

Elena whispered:

"Daniel isn't looking for her."

Roberto stared.

"Why?"

"Because he already has her."

A terrible silence filled the room.

"Where?"

Elena looked toward the mansion above them.

"Here."

Roberto's blood ran cold.

"Who?"

Elena whispered:

"The little girl you heard crying."

Roberto turned toward the dark corridor.

The voice came again.

"Daddy?"

Roberto froze.

It was Sofía's voice.

But Sofía was standing beside him.

He looked at his daughter.

Then toward the corridor.

The second voice whispered:

"Daddy, please."

Roberto stepped forward.

Elena grabbed his arm.

"Don't."

"Why?"

"Because she's not alone."

A man's voice came from behind the darkness.

"You finally found us."

Roberto's blood ran cold.

A figure stepped into the light.

Daniel Reyes.

The man whose name had appeared on the DNA report.

The man Isabella had feared.

The man who supposedly wanted his daughter back.

Daniel smiled.

And beside him stood a little girl.

Seven years old.

Dark hair.

Pale face.

A scar above her eyebrow.

She held a stuffed rabbit.

Roberto stared.

The rabbit had the same torn ear as Sofía's.

The little girl looked directly at him.

Then whispered:

"Daddy."

Roberto couldn't move.

Daniel smiled.

"Meet your other daughter."

And the little girl raised her hand.

On her wrist was an old hospital bracelet.

May you like

The name written on it was:

SOFÍA ALVAREZ.
