CHAPTER 7

CHAPTER 7

WHAT SOFÍA REMEMBERS

The hidden door opened slowly.

Not with the dramatic crash Roberto expected.

It opened with a quiet, almost gentle sound.

A long metallic click.

Then a low groan from somewhere beneath the floor.

Cold air rose from the darkness.

Roberto stood at the edge.

Miguel held his flashlight over the opening.

The beam disappeared into a narrow staircase.

Twenty steps.

Maybe thirty.

No one could see the bottom.

Vanessa stood behind them.

She was shaking.

María held Sofía's hand.

The little girl was silent.

Too silent.

Roberto looked at her.

"Sofía."

She lifted her face.

"Yes, Daddy?"

"Do you remember this place?"

Her fingers tightened around María's hand.

"I remember the stairs."

Roberto's heart stopped.

"You've been here?"

She nodded.

"When?"

"I don't know."

"Before the accident?"

Another nod.

"After?"

"I don't know."

Roberto crouched in front of her.

"What do you remember?"

Sofía frowned.

She pressed her fingers against her temple.

"A door."

"What kind?"

"White."

"Where?"

"Downstairs."

Roberto glanced toward the passage.

"Was someone with you?"

Sofía's breathing changed.

"Mommy."

Roberto swallowed.

"What was she doing?"

"She was crying."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Did she say anything?"

Sofía was quiet.

Then whispered:

"She said we had to hide."

Roberto's chest tightened.

"From whom?"

Sofía shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Did someone come?"

"Yes."

"Who?"

Her face changed.

She became frightened.

"A man."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"What did he look like?"

Sofía lowered her voice.

"He smelled like Daddy."

Roberto froze.

"What?"

"Like you."

María stared at him.

Roberto felt a chill move through his body.

"Did he look like me?"

Sofía shook her head.

"No."

"Then why did he smell like me?"

"He wore Daddy's coat."

Roberto's eyes widened.

His father had owned several coats.

But one had disappeared after the accident.

A dark wool coat.

The same coat witnesses had described at the scene.

Roberto had always assumed his father had been there.

But his father was supposedly dead.

Sofía continued.

"He told Mommy to give him the baby."

Roberto's voice trembled.

"Which baby?"

"I don't know."

"You."

"No."

"Sofía?"

She shook her head.

"He was holding another baby."

Roberto looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa's face had gone white.

"You remember?"

Sofía nodded.

"Two babies."

Roberto knelt.

"What happened to them?"

Sofía whispered:

"He took one."

"Which one?"

"I don't know."

"What did Mommy do?"

"She pushed him."

"What happened?"

"He fell."

"Where?"

"Down the stairs."

Roberto stared at the staircase.

"Did he die?"

Sofía shook her head.

"No."

"How do you know?"

"Because he laughed."

A cold silence filled the room.

Roberto looked down the dark staircase.

He could almost hear it.

A man's laughter.

Seven years ago.

A woman screaming.

A baby crying.

And a child watching from the shadows.

Then Sofía said something that made Roberto's blood run cold.

"Mommy told me to forget."

Roberto stared at her.

"Forget what?"

"Everything."

They went downstairs.

Roberto first.

Miguel behind him.

Then María and Sofía.

Vanessa came last.

The staircase ended in a long corridor.

The walls were concrete.

Old pipes ran along the ceiling.

The air smelled damp.

Roberto swept his flashlight across the walls.

Photographs.

Documents.

Boxes.

And one child's drawing.

He stopped.

It was a crude picture made with crayons.

A house.

A man.

A woman.

Two little girls.

And a red car.

Underneath, in childish handwriting:

MOMMY

Roberto touched the paper.

"Who drew this?"

Sofía stepped forward.

"I did."

He looked at her.

"You?"

She nodded.

"When?"

"I don't remember."

She touched the drawing.

"I was angry."

"Why?"

"Because Mommy left."

Roberto's throat tightened.

"Where did she go?"

Sofía pointed at the red car.

"She went there."

"Where?"

"To the accident."

Roberto looked at the drawing again.

The two girls were standing beside the car.

But one girl had been crossed out.

He stared.

"Why did you cross her out?"

Sofía became silent.

"Sweetheart?"

She whispered:

"Because she disappeared."

Roberto felt his heart break.

"Who disappeared?"

"My sister."

María gasped.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Roberto turned toward her.

"You knew."

Vanessa didn't answer.

"You knew she remembered."

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Years."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because every time she tried, someone stopped her."

"Who?"

Vanessa looked toward the darkness.

"Rafael."

Roberto's fists tightened.

"He was alive."

"Yes."

"And he was here."

"Yes."

"With the children."

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

Roberto looked at Sofía.

"Did you see him?"

She shook her head.

"I heard him."

"What did he say?"

"He said..."

She hesitated.

"Say it."

"He said Daddy was coming."

Roberto's blood ran cold.

"What else?"

"He said Daddy would take the wrong girl."

Silence.

Roberto stared.

"The wrong girl?"

Sofía nodded.

"He said Daddy would never know."

They reached the end of the corridor.

A steel door stood there.

No handle.

Only a keypad.

Miguel examined it.

"Electronic."

"Can you open it?"

"Maybe."

Roberto looked at the screen.

It required six numbers.

Sofía touched the wall.

"Three."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

"Three."

"What about three?"

"The number."

"What number?"

She whispered:

"Mommy's birthday."

Roberto entered the date.

The screen turned green.

The door unlocked.

Miguel stared at her.

"How did she know?"

Roberto didn't answer.

The door opened.

Inside was a room.

Not a prison.

Not exactly.

It looked like a child's bedroom.

A small bed.

A table.

Books.

Stuffed animals.

A wardrobe.

And hundreds of drawings.

Roberto's flashlight moved across the walls.

Every drawing showed the same two girls.

Sometimes they held hands.

Sometimes they stood apart.

Sometimes one girl was behind a wall.

But the strangest drawing showed a man standing between them.

His face had been scribbled out.

Roberto approached.

"Who is this?"

Sofía whispered:

"Grandpa."

Roberto stared.

"Rafael?"

She nodded.

"What is he doing?"

"Taking my sister."

Roberto's breathing became shallow.

"Where?"

Sofía pointed toward another door.

"That room."

There was a smaller door at the back.

Roberto opened it.

Inside was a tiny nursery.

Two cribs.

One empty.

One containing a faded blanket.

On the wall was a name.

LUCÍA.

Roberto froze.

"Lucía."

Vanessa whispered:

"That's her."

Roberto turned.

"Who?"

"The other child."

"Lucía."

Vanessa nodded.

"That was the name Isabella gave her."

Roberto stared at the crib.

"Where is she?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

"Where is Lucía?"

"Alive."

"Where?"

Vanessa looked at Sofía.

"She was supposed to be here."

Roberto's heart stopped.

"Was?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Someone moved her."

"When?"

"Seven years ago."

"Who?"

"Rafael."

Roberto's jaw tightened.

"Where?"

"We don't know."

"Then why did you say she was waiting for me?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"Because she was."

Roberto stepped closer.

"What happened?"

"She was brought here."

"By whom?"

"Elena."

"Elena is alive."

"Yes."

"Where is she?"

Vanessa pointed to the opposite wall.

There was a hidden camera.

A small red light blinked.

Miguel pulled it from the wall.

A wire disappeared into the concrete.

Roberto stared.

"Someone has been watching this room."

Vanessa nodded.

"For years."

"Who?"

"Rafael."

Roberto looked at Sofía.

She was touching the empty crib.

Her face had changed.

She looked sad.

"Sofía."

She didn't answer.

"What do you remember about Lucía?"

Sofía whispered:

"She was cold."

"What?"

"She was always cold."

"Why?"

"Because she cried."

"What did you do?"

"I held her."

Roberto swallowed.

"Did you love her?"

"Yes."

"Did Mommy?"

"Yes."

"What happened?"

Sofía's voice became smaller.

"Mommy gave her away."

Roberto froze.

"Why?"

"To save her."

"From Grandpa?"

Sofía nodded.

"She said Lucía had to go."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Who took her?"

"A lady."

"What lady?"

Sofía thought.

Then said:

"Elena."

Vanessa's face changed.

"That's impossible."

Sofía turned toward her.

"She came back."

Vanessa froze.

"When?"

"After Grandpa left."

"What did she do?"

"She cried."

"Why?"

"Because she said Lucía was sick."

Roberto looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

Sofía continued.

"Elena said Lucía needed a new name."

Roberto's heart began pounding.

"What name?"

Sofía was silent.

"Do you remember?"

She nodded.

"Say it."

The little girl whispered:

"Amelia."

Roberto froze.

Vanessa staggered backward.

"No."

Roberto turned.

"What?"

Vanessa's face had gone completely white.

"That name..."

"What about it?"

"That's the name of Rafael's granddaughter."

Roberto stared.

"Rafael had another granddaughter?"

"Yes."

"Who?"

Vanessa's voice shook.

"Amelia Alvarez."

Roberto's mind raced.

"How old?"

"Seven."

"Where is she?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Roberto grabbed her shoulders.

"Where is she?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"She's been living with another family."

"Which family?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"No."

"Then how do you know the name?"

"Because I saw the paperwork."

"What paperwork?"

"The adoption papers."

Roberto released her.

"Adoption."

Vanessa nodded.

"Rafael arranged it."

"Why?"

"To make Lucía disappear."

Roberto stared at the empty crib.

"So Lucía became Amelia."

"Yes."

"Then Amelia is my daughter."

Vanessa looked down.

"Biologically."

Roberto's eyes filled with tears.

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"Find her."

"I've been trying."

"For how long?"

"Seven years."

Roberto stared at her.

"You've been looking for my daughter?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Vanessa's voice broke.

"Because I promised Isabella."

The room fell silent.

Roberto finally asked:

"What was your promise?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"To keep both girls alive."

"And did you?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"I failed."

"Why?"

"Because Rafael found Lucía."

"And Sofía?"

"She survived because he thought she was someone else."

Roberto's eyes narrowed.

"What do you mean?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"That's what Isabella discovered."

"What?"

"The babies were switched."

Roberto froze.

"By whom?"

"Not by Rafael."

"Then who?"

Vanessa looked at Sofía.

"Isabella."

Roberto couldn't speak.

"Your wife switched the babies herself."

"Why?"

"Because she knew Rafael would kill Lucía."

"But why sacrifice Sofía?"

"She didn't."

Vanessa's voice softened.

"She switched them because she knew Rafael would never hurt the child he believed belonged to someone else."

Roberto stared.

"So the girl I raised..."

"Was protected."

"From Rafael."

"Yes."

"And Lucía?"

"Was hidden."

"Where?"

Vanessa whispered:

"With Elena."

Roberto's heart pounded.

"Then why is she gone?"

"Because Elena disappeared."

"When?"

"Three months after the accident."

Roberto remembered the photographs.

Elena had disappeared.

The doctor had disappeared.

The lawyer had disappeared.

Everyone had disappeared.

He looked at the walls.

The truth had been sitting beneath his feet for seven years.

And he had never known.

Suddenly, Sofía spoke.

"Daddy."

Roberto turned.

"What?"

She was staring at the far wall.

"There."

"What?"

"I remember."

"What do you remember?"

She pointed.

"Mommy put something there."

Roberto walked toward the wall.

"What?"

"A picture."

He examined it.

Nothing.

Then Sofía touched a section of the wall.

"Here."

Roberto pressed it.

A panel moved.

Inside was a small compartment.

A photograph.

And a cassette.

Roberto removed both.

The photograph showed Isabella holding two babies.

On the back:

IF SOFÍA REMEMBERS, PLAY THIS.

Roberto looked at the cassette.

His hands shook.

He found a player.

Pressed play.

Static.

Then Isabella's voice.

"My little girl..."

Sofía immediately recognized it.

"Mommy."

Her voice cracked.

Roberto put an arm around her.

The recording continued.

"If you're hearing this, then you survived."

A pause.

"And if you survived, it means I failed to protect you from the truth."

Roberto's eyes filled with tears.

"I need you to remember one thing."

The tape crackled.

"You were never abandoned."

Sofía began crying.

"Mommy..."

"You were never unwanted."

Roberto held her tighter.

"And you were never the wrong child."

He looked at Vanessa.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

Isabella continued:

"Your father will one day tell you that blood determines who you are."

A pause.

"Don't believe him."

Roberto's breathing stopped.

"Family is the person who stays."

The recording became distorted.

Then Isabella whispered:

"Roberto stayed."

Sofía sobbed.

"He loved you before he knew the truth."

Roberto closed his eyes.

"That is why I chose him."

The tape crackled again.

"Because if anyone could love you without asking who you belonged to..."

A long silence.

"...it was him."

Roberto couldn't hold back his tears.

Then Isabella's voice changed.

Became urgent.

"But there is something you must remember."

The room went silent.

"If you ever see your sister again..."

A pause.

"Do not tell her your real name."

Roberto froze.

"What?"

The tape continued.

"Because Rafael taught her to fear it."

Sofía stopped crying.

She tilted her head.

"I remember."

Roberto looked at her.

"What?"

She whispered:

"He called me Lucía."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

Sofía's eyes filled with tears.

"Grandpa called me Lucía."

Roberto stared at her.

"You were Lucía?"

She nodded.

"Then Mommy called me Sofía."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Roberto's heart shattered.

The girl he had raised as Sofía...

Had once been Lucía.

And the girl called Amelia...

Was the child Isabella had hidden.

But there was something even more frightening.

If Sofía remembered being called Lucía...

Then the child living under the name Amelia might not be the daughter everyone believed.

Roberto looked at the photograph again.

Two babies.

Two names.

Two identities.

And one truth remained hidden.

Who had been switched with whom?

Before he could speak, the lights went out.

Again.

A sound came from the corridor.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Approaching.

Miguel drew his weapon.

"Someone's coming."

Roberto pulled Sofía behind him.

Vanessa stepped backward.

The footsteps stopped outside the room.

Then a man's voice came through the door.

"Roberto."

Roberto froze.

He knew that voice.

It was older.

Rougher.

But unmistakable.

His father's voice.

"Open the door."

Roberto's heart stopped.

Vanessa whispered:

"Don't."

The voice came again.

"Son."

Roberto stared at the door.

"I know you're in there."

Miguel raised his weapon.

Roberto stepped forward.

"Rafael?"

Silence.

Then:

"Yes."

Roberto's blood ran cold.

"You're alive."

A quiet laugh came from the other side.

"I've been alive the entire time."

Sofía suddenly grabbed Roberto's hand.

"Daddy."

"What?"

Her face was terrified.

"I remember him."

"What did he do?"

She whispered:

"He wasn't alone."

Roberto looked at the door.

"What do you mean?"

Sofía's breathing quickened.

"He brought another man."

"Who?"

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

"Uncle."

Roberto froze.

"I don't have an uncle."

Sofía shook her head.

"Yes, you do."

"Who?"

She whispered a name.

A name Roberto had not heard in twenty years.

A name belonging to someone who had supposedly died as a child.

"Mateo."

Roberto's face went pale.

His younger brother.

The brother his family had buried when Roberto was twelve.

The brother whose death had always been called an accident.

The brother whose grave Roberto had visited every year.

From behind the locked door came Rafael's voice.

"Now you remember."

Roberto stared.

His entire childhood suddenly felt like another carefully constructed lie.

Rafael laughed softly.

"You've spent seven years looking for the wrong enemy."

The door handle began to move.

"And tonight..."

A pause.

"...you finally get to meet your brother."

May you like

The lock clicked.

And the door began to open.
