Chapter 1: The Cry Behind the Wedding Door

Chapter 1: The Cry Behind the Wedding Door
The first thing Lucas Bennett noticed was not the scream.
It was the silence that followed.
A wedding was supposed to be filled with noise.
Laughter.
Champagne glasses clinking.
Whispers from relatives who had traveled across the country to witness a new beginning.
The soft music of the orchestra.
The endless congratulations.
But the moment that tiny voice echoed through Bennett Manor...
Everything stopped.
“Daddy…”
Lucas froze beneath the crystal chandelier.
The priest was still holding the wedding vows.
The guests were still seated.
Vanessa stood beside him in a flawless white gown, one hand resting gently against his arm.
To everyone watching, she looked like the happiest woman alive.
But Lucas heard only one thing.
His daughter.
“Daddy… please!”
The voice came again.
Smaller this time.
More frightened.
“Let me out!”
Lucas felt his entire body turn cold.
Because Lily Bennett did not cry easily.
His seven-year-old daughter had lost her mother two years ago.
Since that day, she had learned how to hide pain better than most adults.
She cried quietly.
She suffered quietly.
She smiled even when she missed the woman who had given her life.
But this was not ordinary sadness.
This was fear.
“Lily?”
Lucas whispered.
The entire mansion seemed to hold its breath.
Someone dropped a champagne glass near the entrance.
The sound of breaking crystal echoed across the room.
Vanessa immediately grabbed Lucas’s arm.
“Lucas, wait.”
Her voice was soft.
Almost too soft.
“She’s probably upset because she wants attention.”
Lucas turned toward her.
For the first time that day...
He looked at his bride differently.
“What did you say?”
Vanessa smiled nervously.
“I mean... you know how children are. Weddings are overwhelming. She has been emotional all morning.”
Another cry came from upstairs.
“Daddy!”
This time there was no hesitation.
Lucas pulled his arm away.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
“No child screams like that because she wants attention.”
Then he ran.
The guests watched in shock as the groom disappeared from his own wedding ceremony.
The orchestra stopped playing.
The priest lowered his book.
And Vanessa stood alone beneath the flowers.
Her perfect smile slowly disappeared.
Lucas raced through the hallway.
The same hallway where Lily had run barefoot as a toddler.
The same hallway where his late wife, Emma, used to chase their daughter while laughing.
Memories flashed through his mind.
Emma's voice.
“Lucas, promise me something.”
The night before her surgery.
He remembered holding her hand.
“What?”
“Promise me Lily will always know she is loved.”
He had promised.
And now his daughter was locked somewhere inside his own home.
“Lily!”
He followed the sound.
The guest bathroom at the end of the second floor.
The door was closed.
Locked.
Lucas grabbed the handle.
“Lily?”
A small sob answered.
“Daddy…”
His heart broke.
“I’m here.”
“I’m scared.”
Those two words destroyed him.
Lucas immediately tried the door.
Locked.
“Move away from the door, sweetheart.”
He stepped back.
Before he could force it open...
Vanessa appeared behind him.
Breathing heavily.
“Lucas.”
He turned.
She was no longer smiling.
“Why is this door locked?”
Vanessa looked at the door.
Then back at him.
“I don’t know.”
The answer came too quickly.
Lucas noticed.
Because he knew Vanessa.
Or at least he thought he did.
For eighteen months, she had been the woman who helped him rebuild his life.
The woman who sat beside Lily when nightmares came.
The woman who told him she understood that he would always love Emma’s memory.
She had been perfect.
Maybe too perfect.
“Open the door.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I don't have the key.”
A strange feeling moved through Lucas’s chest.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something worse.
Doubt.
Then Lily spoke from behind the door.
“Daddy…”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Vanessa locked me inside.”
The hallway became silent.
Everyone who had followed them stopped moving.
Lucas slowly turned.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But he saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Lily, that’s not true,” Vanessa said quickly.
Her voice became gentle.
Almost rehearsed.
“Sweetheart, tell your daddy you’re just upset.”
Lucas stared at her.
“Why would she say that?”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Because she doesn’t want us to get married.”
The words hung in the air.
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Lucas looked back at the locked door.
Then at Vanessa.
“Is that what you believe?”
Vanessa nodded.
“She has been struggling since her mother died. I told you that.”
Lucas remembered.
Vanessa had always been the one explaining Lily’s behavior.
Lily is confused.
Lily is jealous.
Lily is acting out.
And Lucas had trusted her.
Because he wanted to believe that someone could love his daughter as much as he did.
“Daddy!”
The cry came again.
This time Lily was crying harder.
“Please open the door!”
Lucas didn't wait.
He stepped back.
And kicked the lock.
Once.
Twice.
On the third impact...
The door broke open.
Inside...
Lily sat on the bathroom floor.
Her wedding dress was wrinkled.
Her hair was messy.
Tears covered her face.
But what made Lucas’s blood run cold...
Was the chair pushed against the door.
Someone had blocked it from the outside.
Lucas rushed forward.
“My baby.”
He dropped to his knees and pulled her into his arms.
Lily held onto him so tightly her fingers hurt.
“She left me here.”
Lucas closed his eyes.
“Who?”
Lily looked over his shoulder.
Toward Vanessa.
“Her.”
The entire hallway went silent.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“No, Lucas. She’s confused.”
But then Lucas saw something.
A small silver key.
In Vanessa’s hand.
His eyes moved downward.
The key.
The locked door.
The frightened child.
His voice became dangerously quiet.
“Why do you have the key?”
Vanessa looked at her hand.
For a moment...
She had no answer.
“I…”
She stopped.
Everyone was watching.
The guests.
The staff.
The family members.
The woman who had just been standing beside Lucas as his future wife.
Now looked like someone caught hiding something.
“Lucas, I can explain.”
He slowly stood.
Still holding Lily.
“Then explain.”
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then Lily whispered something that made Lucas freeze.
“Daddy…”
He looked down.
“What is it?”
The little girl wiped her tears.
“She told me Mommy left something for me.”
Lucas frowned.
“What?”
“A letter.”
Vanessa’s face instantly lost all color.
Not sadness.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Pure fear.
Lucas noticed.
And for the first time...
He wondered if Vanessa wasn't afraid of what Lily had said.
She was afraid of what Lily knew.
“Where is the letter?” Lucas asked.
Lily looked toward the staircase.
Slowly.
“I don’t know.”
A pause.
“But she took it.”
Lucas followed her eyes.
At the top of the staircase...
A figure stood in the shadows.
An older woman.
Holding an old yellow envelope.
Emma Bennett’s handwriting was visible on the front.
Lucas stopped breathing.
Because he recognized that handwriting immediately.
His wife.
The woman he buried two years ago.
The woman who could no longer speak.
The woman who had left him only memories.
The stranger slowly descended the stairs.
Everyone moved aside.
Vanessa stepped backward.
And for the first time since Lucas met her...
She looked terrified.
The woman reached the bottom step.
Then held out the envelope.
“Lucas Bennett.”
Her voice trembled.
“This belongs to you.”
Lucas stared at the letter.
“Who are you?”
The woman looked at Vanessa.
Then back at him.
“I’m the person your wife trusted before she died.”
A pause.
“And I’m the person who knows what Vanessa did.”
The room erupted into whispers.
Lucas looked at Vanessa.
His bride.
The woman he was supposed to marry.
The woman standing beside him only minutes ago.
Now...
A stranger.
He took the envelope.
And saw the words written across it.
For Lucas.
Read this only when Lily is in danger.
Lucas’s hands tightened.
Because suddenly...
His wedding was no longer a celebration.
It was an investigation.
And the woman he almost married...
May you like
Was the first suspect.
