Chapter 3: The Perfect Bride’s Hidden Face

Chapter 3: The Perfect Bride’s Hidden Face

The room had never felt so small.

Only minutes earlier, Bennett Manor had been filled with celebration.

Now every person inside it felt like they were standing in the middle of a storm.

Lucas Bennett stood beside his daughter, one hand resting protectively on Lily’s shoulder.

In his other hand was the small recording device left behind by Emma.

The woman he had loved.

The woman who had known him better than anyone.

And apparently...

The woman who had known Vanessa better than him.

Vanessa stood across the room.

Still wearing the wedding dress she had spent months choosing.

The dress that was supposed to represent a new beginning.

But now it looked like a costume.

A beautiful disguise.

“Lucas.”

Her voice was softer now.

Controlled.

The same voice she had used whenever she wanted people to believe she was reasonable.

“You cannot seriously let a dead woman’s fears destroy everything we built.”

Lucas looked at her.

“We?”

The word made her pause.

“Yes.”

A small smile.

“Our relationship. Our future. Our family.”

Lucas looked down at Lily.

Then back at Vanessa.

“You said family.”

A pause.

“Do you know what I heard when my daughter called for me?”

Vanessa remained silent.

“I heard fear.”

His voice hardened.

“And I heard it from a child who was supposed to feel safest in this house.”

Vanessa’s eyes became wet.

She was good.

Lucas had to admit that.

Even now...

She knew exactly how to appear hurt.

Exactly how to look like the victim.

“I loved Lily.”

Her voice trembled.

“I still do.”

Lily immediately tightened her grip on Lucas’s hand.

A small movement.

But Lucas noticed.

Children didn’t understand manipulation.

They understood feelings.

“Lily,” Lucas said gently.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

Vanessa looked alarmed.

“Lucas, she’s upset—”

“Vanessa.”

His voice stopped her.

“Let her speak.”

Lily looked nervous.

She glanced at Vanessa.

Then at her father.

“She told me to go upstairs because she had a surprise for me.”

Lucas frowned.

“A surprise?”

Lily nodded.

“She said she wanted me to practice calling her Mommy.”

The silence afterward was absolute.

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“That’s not what happened.”

But Lily continued.

“She said after today, everyone would forget Mommy.”

Lucas felt his stomach tighten.

“She said I needed a new mommy.”

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“But I told her I already have one.”

Lucas’s breath caught.

Because Lily rarely spoke about Emma.

Not because she forgot.

Because remembering hurt.

“What did she say then?”

Lucas asked.

Lily looked down.

“She said Mommy was gone.”

A pause.

“And I needed to stop pretending she was coming back.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

Pain.

Anger.

Disbelief.

All mixed together.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“I was trying to help her move on.”

Lucas looked at her.

“By locking her in a bathroom?”

Vanessa had no answer.

Margaret watched quietly.

She had spent years caring for Emma.

She knew Vanessa was dangerous.

But even she seemed surprised by how quickly the mask was falling.

“Lucas,” Margaret said.

“There is something you need to know.”

He turned.

“What?”

“Emma started investigating Vanessa before she died.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only briefly.

But Lucas saw it.

“You knew?”

Vanessa looked away.

“Answer me.”

Her silence became an answer.

Lucas’s jaw tightened.

“What did my wife find?”

Vanessa laughed suddenly.

A small, bitter laugh.

The sound was completely different from the woman Lucas thought he knew.

“You really want to know?”

Everyone froze.

Because for the first time...

Vanessa stopped pretending.

“You want to know what Emma found?”

Her smile disappeared.

“She found out I wasn’t as perfect as she thought.”

Lucas stared.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the staff.

At the people who had watched her become the perfect bride.

“I spent eighteen months becoming everything you needed.”

Her voice became colder.

“Do you know how exhausting that was?”

Lucas said nothing.

“I was there when you were grieving.”

“I listened to you talk about Emma every night.”

“I helped Lily.”

“I cooked.”

“I cleaned.”

“I smiled.”

A pause.

“And nobody ever asked what I wanted.”

Lucas looked disgusted.

“So this was revenge?”

“No.”

Her answer came instantly.

“This was survival.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“You wanted access.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Be careful.”

Margaret didn’t move.

“Emma knew.”

Lucas looked between them.

“Knew what?”

Margaret took a breath.

“She knew Vanessa had been asking questions about the Bennett family assets.”

Lucas froze.

“That's impossible.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Is it?”

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out several papers.

“I kept copies.”

Lucas took them.

His eyes scanned the pages.

Bank records.

Property documents.

Trust information.

Then he saw the date.

Three months after Emma’s diagnosis.

Vanessa had contacted a financial advisor.

The subject:

Future Bennett Estate Management.

Lucas felt something inside him break.

“She was planning this while Emma was alive?”

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Everyone is acting like I committed some crime.”

She stepped closer.

“I loved Lucas.”

Lucas looked at her.

“Did you?”

The question hurt her.

Because for the first time...

He wasn't asking because he wanted reassurance.

He was asking because he wanted the truth.

“You think I only wanted money?”

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“You think everything I did was fake?”

Lucas remained silent.

That silence destroyed her more than anger would have.

“I gave up my life for you.”

She pointed toward Lily.

“I took care of your daughter.”

Lily stepped closer to Lucas.

“She was mean when you weren't there.”

The words were quiet.

But devastating.

Vanessa looked at her.

For a moment...

Something dangerous appeared.

A flash of anger.

Then it vanished.

But Lucas saw it.

And so did everyone else.

“You were never trying to become her mother.”

Lucas’s voice was low.

“You were trying to replace her.”

Vanessa stared.

Then smiled.

Not the sweet smile.

The real one.

“You finally understand.”

The room went cold.

Lucas felt his entire world shift.

Because he realized something terrifying.

The woman he almost married had not entered his life by accident.

She had studied him.

Studied Lily.

Studied Emma.

And waited.

But Vanessa wasn't finished.

She stepped toward the staircase.

“You want the truth?”

Everyone watched.

“Fine.”

She looked directly at Lucas.

“Emma wasn't the innocent person you think she was.”

Lucas’s expression changed.

“What?”

Vanessa smiled.

“She lied to you too.”

Margaret immediately reacted.

“That’s not true.”

Vanessa ignored her.

“She never told you everything about the night before she died.”

Lucas froze.

Because there was something in Vanessa’s voice.

Something confident.

Like she had been waiting years to say it.

“She left you a letter?”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Good.”

A pause.

“Then read it.”

She looked at the envelope.

“Because when you do...”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’ll realize Emma wasn’t warning you about me.”

Silence.

“She was warning you about herself.”

Lucas stood motionless.

The accusation hung in the air.

And for the first time that day...

He wondered if the truth was even more complicated than he thought.

Because Vanessa’s mask had cracked.

But behind that crack...

Was another mystery.

A secret Emma had taken to her grave.
