Chapter 2: The Letter From the Dead Mother

Chapter 2: The Letter From the Dead Mother

The envelope felt heavier than it should have.

Lucas Bennett had held thousands of important documents in his hands.

Business contracts.

Property agreements.

Legal files.

Documents worth millions of dollars.

But nothing had ever felt as terrifying as a small, yellow envelope with his dead wife's handwriting on it.

For Lucas.

Those two words nearly broke him.

Because Emma had written them.

Not Vanessa.

Not some stranger.

Not someone trying to create a scandal.

Emma.

The woman who had known every version of him.

The woman who had stood beside him before money, before success, before the mansion and the reputation.

The woman who had died believing she was leaving him and Lily behind.

The wedding guests watched silently.

Nobody knew what to do.

The music had stopped.

The flowers that had decorated the hallway suddenly felt ridiculous.

A celebration had transformed into something else.

A courtroom.

And everyone was waiting for evidence.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Lucas, please.”

Her voice was trembling.

“We need to talk privately.”

Lucas didn't move.

His eyes remained on the envelope.

“No.”

The single word silenced her.

“Not until I understand why my daughter was locked in a bathroom on my wedding day.”

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Vanessa looked around.

She saw the judgment.

The questions.

The suspicion.

And Lucas noticed something important.

She wasn't confused.

She wasn't shocked.

She was calculating.

“Lucas,” Vanessa whispered.

“You’re letting a child’s imagination destroy everything.”

The sentence made his expression change.

Not because she said Lily was wrong.

Because she said it so easily.

As if she had already decided Lily’s truth didn't matter.

Lucas looked down at his daughter.

Lily was still holding onto his jacket.

Her small body was shaking.

“She’s not lying.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You don’t know that.”

Lucas looked at her.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I do.”

The mysterious woman standing nearby lowered her eyes.

She understood.

Because she had known Emma.

And she knew exactly why Emma wrote that letter.

“Lucas.”

The woman spoke softly.

“You need to read it somewhere private.”

He looked at her.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Margaret Ellis.”

A pause.

“I was your wife's nurse.”

Lucas froze.

Emma's private nurse.

The woman who cared for her during the final months.

The woman Lucas remembered meeting only briefly because Emma had insisted:

“Lucas, Margaret is wonderful. She helps me feel normal.”

“Why do you have this?”

Margaret looked at Vanessa.

“Because Emma asked me to keep it safe.”

Lucas followed her gaze.

Vanessa immediately looked away.

That was enough.

Lucas saw it.

The connection.

The fear.

“Everyone leaves the room.”

His voice was calm.

But nobody questioned him.

The guests slowly moved away.

The staff disappeared.

Only Lucas, Lily, Vanessa, and Margaret remained.

“Dad…”

Lily whispered.

Lucas looked down.

“I'm here.”

“Is Mommy mad?”

The question destroyed him.

“No, sweetheart.”

He brushed her hair back.

“Your mommy loved you more than anything.”

Lily looked at the envelope.

“Then why did she write a scary letter?”

Lucas had no answer.

Because he didn't know.

Margaret gently spoke.

“Emma was afraid.”

Lucas looked up sharply.

“Afraid of what?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Of what would happen after she was gone.”

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“This is ridiculous.”

Everyone turned.

She forced a laugh.

“Emma was sick. She was under medication. She wasn't thinking clearly.”

Lucas stared at her.

A cold feeling moved through him.

“Don't.”

Vanessa stopped.

“Don't use her illness to explain away what she wrote.”

Because Lucas remembered something.

Emma had been sick.

But she had never been confused.

Her mind had remained sharp until the end.

Margaret nodded.

“Emma was very clear.”

She looked at Lucas.

“She made me promise that I would only give you this letter if Lily was in danger.”

Lucas looked at his daughter.

Then at the broken bathroom door.

The answer was obvious.

He opened the envelope.

The paper inside was folded carefully.

Emma’s handwriting covered the page.

Lucas’s hands began trembling.

My Lucas,

He stopped.

Just seeing the first words nearly broke him.

He continued.

If you are reading this, then something happened that made Margaret believe Lily needed protection.

Lucas looked at Margaret.

Then back at the letter.

I wish I could be there to explain everything myself.

A tear slipped down his face.

But if I am gone, I need you to listen carefully.

The room became silent.

Do not trust the person who appears perfect.

Lucas’s eyes slowly moved toward Vanessa.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

I made a mistake.

I believed kindness was the same as goodness.

I believed someone who loved Lily could never hurt her.

Lucas stopped reading.

His chest tightened.

But some people don't love children.

They love what children represent.

Money. Status. Control.

Vanessa took a step back.

“No.”

Her voice was barely audible.

Lucas continued.

If Vanessa Kensington is standing beside you when you read this...

The air disappeared from the room.

Ask yourself why she wanted to become Lily's mother so quickly after I died.

Lucas looked up.

Vanessa was completely pale.

The letter continued.

Ask yourself why she was so interested in my estate.

Ask yourself why she asked questions about Lily's inheritance before she asked how Lily was coping with losing me.

Lucas stopped.

Because suddenly...

He remembered.

Small moments.

Things he ignored.

Things that seemed harmless.

Vanessa asking about Lily's trust fund.

Vanessa asking whether Emma had changed her will.

Vanessa saying:

“Lily will need someone responsible managing things when she gets older.”

At the time, it sounded caring.

Now...

It sounded different.

“Lucas.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You can't believe this.”

He looked at her.

And she saw something she had never seen before.

Not love.

Not trust.

Suspicion.

“Why didn't you tell me Emma left a letter?”

Vanessa froze.

“What?”

“You knew Margaret.”

Silence.

“You knew she had been close to Emma.”

Lucas took a step forward.

“Why didn't you ever mention her?”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Margaret answered quietly.

“Because Emma asked Vanessa not to know.”

Lucas turned.

“What?”

Margaret looked at Vanessa.

“Your wife discovered something before she died.”

The room became colder.

“What did she discover?”

Margaret hesitated.

Then whispered:

“That Vanessa wasn't the person she claimed to be.”

Vanessa's composure finally broke.

“Enough!”

The sudden anger shocked everyone.

She pointed at Margaret.

“You have no right to destroy my life!”

Lucas stared.

Because there it was.

The mask slipped.

Just for a moment.

But everyone saw it.

Lily moved closer to her father.

“Daddy…”

Lucas immediately pulled her behind him.

Protective.

Automatic.

Vanessa noticed.

And something dark crossed her face.

Not sadness.

Not guilt.

Resentment.

That single expression told Lucas more than any letter could.

His bride wasn't afraid of losing him.

She was afraid of losing control.

Margaret looked at Lucas.

“There is more.”

Lucas looked at her.

“More?”

She nodded.

“Emma didn't just write this letter.”

A pause.

“She recorded a message.”

Lucas froze.

“What message?”

Margaret reached into her bag.

And pulled out a small black device.

“Something she wanted Lily to hear when the truth came out.”

Vanessa's face went completely white.

Because she knew.

She knew exactly what was on that recording.

Lucas looked at the device.

Then at his daughter.

Then at the woman he was supposed to marry.

His wedding day had begun with vows.

But now...

It was becoming an investigation into betrayal.

And Lucas was about to hear the final words of the woman who knew the truth before everyone else.

Emma Bennett was gone.

May you like

But she had left behind one final warning.
