Chapter 8: The Secret Investigation

Chapter 8: The Secret Investigation
The courtroom ended for the day, but the war had only begun.
Lucas Bennett walked out of the courthouse surrounded by cameras.
Reporters shouted questions.
“Mr. Bennett, are you denying the accusations?”
“Did your wife really fear you?”
“Is Vanessa Kensington telling the truth?”
Lucas ignored them.
For the first time in his life...
He did not care what the world believed.
He only cared about one person.
Lily.
Inside the car, his daughter sat quietly in the back seat.
She stared out the window.
Watching the city move past.
Lucas looked at her through the mirror.
“Are you okay?”
Lily nodded.
But he knew her too well.
She was pretending.
Just like she had learned to do after losing her mother.
“You don't have to be brave all the time.”
The little girl looked at him.
“Mommy said I was brave.”
Lucas smiled sadly.
“She was right.”
A pause.
“But brave people get scared too.”
Lily looked down.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Are you going to disappear too?”
The question nearly broke him.
“No.”
His answer was immediate.
“I promise.”
But as he said it...
Lucas realized something.
A promise was not enough anymore.
He needed the truth.
Because someone had spent years hiding it.
And if he failed to uncover it...
He might lose Lily.
That night, after Lily fell asleep, Lucas returned to his office.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
On his desk were Emma's files.
The letter.
The recording.
The documents Margaret provided.
Lucas had spent the last twenty-four hours trying to understand one thing.
Why?
Why would Emma, near the end of her life, become suspicious of Vanessa?
Why would she secretly investigate someone Lucas trusted?
There had to be a reason.
He opened Emma's old medical records.
At first glance, everything seemed normal.
Treatment.
Appointments.
Medication.
Nothing unusual.
Then he noticed something.
A missing month.
Six weeks before Emma died...
There were no records.
Nothing.
Lucas frowned.
“That's impossible.”
Emma had been receiving constant treatment.
There should have been dozens of documents.
He immediately called Daniel.
“Find everything related to Emma's medical care.”
Daniel sounded surprised.
“Lucas, it's almost midnight.”
“I know.”
A pause.
“But I need this.”
Daniel heard something in his voice.
“I'm on it.”
Two hours later...
Daniel called back.
“You were right.”
Lucas sat up.
“About what?”
“There is a gap.”
“How big?”
“Six weeks.”
Lucas felt a chill.
“Why?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because those records were transferred.”
“Transferred where?”
“To a private clinic.”
Lucas frowned.
“Which one?”
Daniel was quiet.
Too quiet.
“Daniel.”
The attorney finally answered.
“The clinic was owned by a company connected to Thomas Hale.”
Lucas stood.
Thomas Hale.
Vanessa's father.
The man connected to the collapse of the Bennett family.
“No.”
Daniel continued.
“There’s more.”
“What?”
“The doctor who handled Emma’s private treatment?”
A pause.
“He disappeared six months after Emma died.”
Lucas felt his blood run cold.
The next morning, Lucas met Eleanor Grace at a quiet café away from the city.
She arrived carrying another box.
“You found something.”
Lucas nodded.
“Emma’s medical records were altered.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I was afraid of that.”
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
Lucas stared.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Eleanor looked hurt.
“Because Emma made me promise.”
“Why?”
“Because she was afraid you would confront Vanessa too early.”
Lucas frowned.
“Too early?”
Eleanor nodded.
“She believed someone was watching.”
The words made him uncomfortable.
“Watching who?”
“You.”
Silence.
Lucas looked away.
“Emma thought Vanessa was dangerous.”
“Yes.”
“But she also thought someone else was helping her.”
Lucas already knew the answer.
But he needed to hear it.
“Who?”
Eleanor opened the box.
Inside were old photographs.
Documents.
Letters.
She pulled out one picture.
Lucas took it.
His expression changed instantly.
It showed Vanessa.
And Richard Bennett.
His uncle.
Together.
The date was three months before Lucas met Vanessa.
“No.”
Eleanor nodded.
“They knew each other.”
“How?”
“That is what Emma was trying to discover.”
Lucas looked at the photograph.
The man who raised him after his father died.
The man who called him family.
Another betrayal.
That evening, Lucas returned to Emma's old room.
He rarely entered it.
It still smelled faintly like her perfume.
The books were untouched.
The chair by the window remained where she always sat.
He searched carefully.
Not like a husband remembering.
Like an investigator.
And then he found something.
Behind a loose piece of wood in the bookshelf.
A small hidden compartment.
Inside was a notebook.
Emma's handwriting.
The first page contained one sentence.
If Lucas finds this, then Vanessa already knows I discovered the truth.
Lucas stopped breathing.
He turned the page.
Richard Bennett is not protecting our family.
His hands tightened.
He is the reason our family was destroyed.
Lucas stared.
Another page.
Vanessa did not enter my life by accident.
Another.
She was sent to finish what Richard started.
Lucas stepped backward.
Because suddenly the entire story changed.
Vanessa was not the beginning.
She was only a piece.
The real enemy had been inside his family.
For years.
He continued reading.
Until he reached the final page.
The handwriting became weaker.
Like Emma had written it near the end.
Lucas, if you are reading this, I am sorry.
I wanted to protect you.
But there is something you must know about Lily.
Lucas froze.
The final sentence was underlined.
Lily saw what happened the night I became sick.
His heart stopped.
“What?”
He read it again.
Lily knows the truth.
Lucas dropped the notebook.
His daughter had been carrying a secret.
A secret from the night her mother died.
And suddenly, everything made sense.
Why Vanessa feared Lily.
Why Emma warned him.
Why everyone had tried to silence the child.
Because Lily wasn't just a witness.
She was the only person alive who knew what really happened.
Lucas immediately grabbed his phone.
He called home.
The nanny answered.
“Where is Lily?”
A pause.
“Mr. Bennett…”
Her voice changed.
“What?”
“She received a letter.”
Lucas’s blood turned cold.
“What letter?”
The nanny whispered:
“From Vanessa.”
The line went silent.
Lucas looked at Emma's notebook.
Then at the darkness outside.
The investigation was no longer about proving Vanessa’s guilt.
May you like
It was about protecting Lily before the truth destroyed her.
