Chapter 6: The Marriage Built on Lies

Chapter 6: The Marriage Built on Lies
The words refused to leave Lucas’s mind.
She married you because of your name.
Not because of love.
Not because of Lily.
Not because she wanted a future together.
Because of his family.
Because of something buried in the past.
Lucas Bennett had spent his entire life believing he could read people.
It was how he built his company.
How he survived ruthless competitors.
How he negotiated deals where one wrong decision could cost millions.
He knew when someone was lying.
He knew when someone was hiding something.
He knew when someone wanted something from him.
But Vanessa had fooled him.
For eighteen months, she had stood beside him.
She had smiled.
She had comforted him.
She had held Lily’s hand.
And all the while...
She had been playing a role.
The worst part wasn't that she lied.
The worst part was that Lucas had wanted to believe her.
“Tell me everything.”
Lucas’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
Eleanor Grace looked at him carefully.
She had seen that expression before.
It was the same expression Lucas’s mother used to have when she discovered betrayal.
Quiet.
Controlled.
Dangerous.
“Lucas…”
Eleanor hesitated.
“This is not an easy story.”
“I don't need easy.”
He looked at Vanessa.
“I need the truth.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You’re going to believe strangers over me?”
Lucas turned.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m going to believe evidence.”
That sentence hurt Vanessa more than anger.
Because she realized something.
She had lost him.
Not emotionally.
Not completely.
But the trust she spent eighteen months building was gone.
Eleanor placed another folder on the table.
“This is what Emma discovered.”
Lucas opened it.
Inside were documents.
Old records.
Photos.
Names.
The first page contained information about Vanessa.
Or rather...
The woman known as Vanessa Kensington.
Lucas read slowly.
Birth name: Victoria Hale.
His eyes narrowed.
“Victoria?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“Your name isn't Vanessa.”
Silence.
Finally, she answered.
“No.”
Lucas looked up.
“Why?”
Her expression remained unreadable.
“Because Vanessa Kensington was the person I needed to become.”
The honesty surprised him.
“Who was Victoria Hale?”
Vanessa looked away.
“A woman who lost everything.”
Eleanor interrupted.
“No.”
Her voice was firm.
“A woman who wanted revenge.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“You don't know what I lost.”
Eleanor's eyes hardened.
“I know exactly what you lost.”
A pause.
“Your father.”
Lucas looked between them.
“What does her father have to do with me?”
No one answered immediately.
Then Eleanor spoke.
“Your father and Victoria’s father were business partners.”
Lucas frowned.
“My father had many partners.”
“Yes.”
“But one of them destroyed him.”
Lucas felt a familiar anger rise.
His father.
The bankruptcy.
The humiliation.
The years his family struggled afterward.
“Who?”
Eleanor looked at Vanessa.
“Thomas Hale.”
Lucas froze.
“Her father?”
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
“My father was blamed for your family's collapse.”
Her voice was quieter now.
“But the truth is more complicated.”
Lucas stared.
“Then explain.”
Vanessa took a breath.
“For years, I believed your father destroyed mine.”
A pause.
“I grew up hearing that the Bennett family stole everything from us.”
“And you came into my life to punish me?”
Lucas asked.
Vanessa looked at him.
“At first.”
The answer was painful because it was honest.
“At first?”
She nodded.
“Then I met Lily.”
Lucas said nothing.
“I didn't expect that.”
“What?”
“To care about her.”
Lily, standing nearby, looked confused.
Vanessa continued.
“I thought she would just be part of the plan.”
Lucas’s expression darkened.
“Plan.”
The word confirmed everything.
“What plan?”
Vanessa looked down.
And for the first time...
She looked ashamed.
“I was supposed to marry you.”
A pause.
“Gain your trust.”
Another pause.
“Get access to the Bennett estate.”
Lucas felt sick.
“And then?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Destroy the family that destroyed mine.”
Nobody spoke.
Even Lily seemed to understand something was wrong.
She moved closer to Lucas.
“Daddy…”
He immediately placed a hand on her shoulder.
“I’m here.”
Vanessa looked at the gesture.
Something in her expression changed.
Regret.
Real regret.
“I didn't plan for her.”
Lucas looked at her.
“What?”
“I didn't plan to love Lily.”
Her voice cracked.
“I didn't plan to care about her.”
“But I did.”
Lucas shook his head.
“That doesn't erase what you did.”
“I know.”
The simple answer surprised him.
Because Vanessa was finally not defending herself.
Eleanor opened another document.
“There is more.”
Lucas looked.
It was a payment record.
Large transfers.
From an unknown account.
To Vanessa.
“What is this?”
Vanessa became tense.
“Who paid you?”
Lucas demanded.
She didn't answer.
“Vanessa.”
Finally, she whispered:
“Someone who wanted the Bennett family destroyed.”
“Who?”
Her eyes moved toward the window.
“Your uncle.”
Lucas froze.
“What?”
Eleanor nodded.
“Your uncle Richard was the one who convinced Thomas Hale that your family was responsible for his downfall.”
Lucas felt the ground shift.
His uncle.
The man who helped him rebuild after his father’s death.
The man who had attended the wedding.
The man who called Vanessa “a blessing.”
“No.”
Eleanor looked at him sadly.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he wanted control of the Bennett empire.”
The truth was becoming a pattern.
Everyone wanted something.
Money.
Power.
Revenge.
And Lucas had unknowingly invited them into his home.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Lucas.”
He looked at her.
“I know what I did was wrong.”
A pause.
“But there is something you need to understand.”
“What?”
“I didn't lock Lily in that bathroom because of the plan.”
Lucas said nothing.
“I did it because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
Vanessa looked at Lily.
“Because she found the second letter.”
The room froze.
Lucas’s eyes narrowed.
“What second letter?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She found it in Emma’s room.”
Lily looked confused.
“I didn't know it was important.”
Lucas turned to his daughter.
“Lily?”
The little girl hesitated.
Then slowly nodded.
“I found a paper behind Mommy’s picture.”
Lucas’s heart raced.
“Where is it?”
Lily looked toward Vanessa.
“She took it.”
Everyone turned.
Vanessa stood frozen.
Because now the final piece of the truth was missing.
The second letter.
The one Emma wrote when she knew Vanessa was dangerous.
Lucas stepped closer.
“Where is my wife’s letter?”
Vanessa looked at him.
And for the first time...
She looked truly afraid.
“Lucas…”
“Where?”
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“I burned it.”
The room went silent.
Lucas stared.
“You destroyed the last message from Lily’s mother?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her answer was barely audible.
“Because Emma knew the truth about me.”
A pause.
“And she knew the truth about your family.”
Lucas stepped back.
The marriage he thought was built on love...
Had been built on secrets.
Lies.
And revenge.
But Vanessa had revealed something even more dangerous.
The enemy was not just her.
Someone inside the Bennett family had been controlling everything from the beginning.
And Lucas was about to discover that the person closest to him...
May you like
Was the person who betrayed him the most.
