Chapter 9: The Betrayal Inside the Family

Chapter 9: The Betrayal Inside the Family

The moment Lucas heard the word letter, every instinct inside him screamed.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Danger.

“Where is Lily now?”

His voice was controlled, but the nanny immediately understood something was wrong.

“She’s upstairs in her room.”

“Is Vanessa with her?”

A pause.

“No.”

Lucas closed his eyes for one second.

Relief.

Then immediately came another thought.

If Vanessa wasn't there...

Who gave Lily the letter?

“Do not let anyone leave the house.”

The nanny became nervous.

“Mr. Bennett?”

“Lock the doors.”

A pause.

“And stay with Lily.”

Lucas grabbed his coat.

He was already moving before the call ended.

Because he finally understood the game.

Everyone had been looking at Vanessa.

Everyone had been focused on the woman who lied.

The woman who manipulated.

The woman who tried to take Lily.

But Vanessa had never worked alone.

And someone else was still moving pieces on the board.

The drive back to Bennett Manor felt endless.

Every red light.

Every slow vehicle.

Every second.

Too long.

Lucas kept replaying Emma's final words.

Someone close to you is helping her.

At first, he thought of Vanessa.

Then Richard.

But now he wondered...

Who else?

Who else had access?

Who else knew about Emma's secrets?

When Lucas arrived, the front door was open.

Not unlocked.

Open.

His heart dropped.

He stepped inside.

“Lily!”

“Daddy!”

Her voice came from upstairs.

Alive.

Safe.

Lucas ran.

He found her sitting on her bed.

The nanny beside her.

And on the blanket...

A white envelope.

Lucas stopped.

“Don't touch it.”

He said quickly.

Lily looked confused.

“Why?”

“Because we don't know who sent it.”

The little girl nodded.

Lucas carefully picked up the envelope using a cloth.

No name.

No address.

Only one word written on the front.

LILY

A chill went through him.

Someone knew exactly what they were doing.

Later, the police collected the envelope.

The result came back quickly.

No fingerprints except Lily's.

No useful DNA.

Whoever sent it had been careful.

But inside was something worse.

A photograph.

Lucas stared at it.

His face turned pale.

It showed Emma.

On the night she became seriously ill.

But that wasn't what shocked him.

In the background...

Standing near the doorway...

Was Richard Bennett.

And beside him...

Was Vanessa.

The date was three days before Emma's final hospitalization.

Lucas felt sick.

He looked at Lily.

“Did you ever see this picture?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Did Mommy show you anything that night?”

The little girl became quiet.

Too quiet.

“Lily.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Mommy told me not to tell anyone.”

Lucas knelt.

“Tell me.”

“She said some people smile when they are doing bad things.”

A pause.

“She said Uncle Richard was not the person Daddy thought he was.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

Because Emma knew.

She knew before he did.

The next morning, Lucas confronted Richard.

Not with anger.

With evidence.

Richard Bennett arrived at the office smiling.

The same confident smile he had worn for years.

“Lucas.”

He opened his arms.

“You look exhausted.”

Lucas didn't move.

“You knew Vanessa before I met her.”

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But Lucas noticed.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

Lucas placed the photograph on the desk.

Richard looked at it.

And went silent.

“Explain.”

Richard slowly sat down.

“Where did you get this?”

“That doesn't matter.”

Lucas leaned forward.

“What matters is why my uncle was meeting my future wife before I even knew her.”

Richard sighed.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Lucas laughed bitterly.

“Protect me?”

“You don't understand.”

Richard stood.

“Your father destroyed everything.”

Lucas froze.

“What?”

“Your father ruined families.”

Richard's voice became harder.

“He made enemies and left everyone else to suffer.”

Lucas stared.

“Is that what you told Vanessa?”

Richard said nothing.

“Did you convince her my family destroyed hers?”

Still silence.

That was enough.

“You used her.”

Lucas whispered.

Richard looked away.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Lucas's voice grew colder.

“You found a woman filled with anger and pointed her at me.”

Richard’s expression changed.

“I gave her a purpose.”

The words hung in the room.

Lucas felt betrayed in a way he had never experienced.

Because Vanessa had lied.

But Richard...

Richard was family.

“Why?”

Lucas asked.

Richard looked at him.

And for the first time, Lucas saw the truth.

Not regret.

Not guilt.

Ambition.

“Because your father should have left me everything.”

Lucas went still.

“You destroyed him because of inheritance?”

Richard shrugged.

“Your father was weak.”

The sentence made Lucas's blood run cold.

“You destroyed our family.”

“I corrected a mistake.”

Lucas stepped back.

The man who helped raise him...

The man he trusted...

Had been the architect of his pain.

But Richard wasn't finished.

“You think Vanessa was the danger?”

He smiled.

“You still don't understand.”

Lucas stared.

“Then explain.”

Richard leaned closer.

“Vanessa was supposed to marry you.”

A pause.

“But she was never supposed to love Lily.”

Lucas’s expression hardened.

“What are you saying?”

Richard smiled.

“She changed the plan.”

The room went silent.

“Because of your daughter.”

Lucas understood.

Vanessa had started as an enemy.

But something unexpected happened.

She began caring.

And that ruined everything.

Richard continued.

“She was supposed to take control of the estate.”

“But then Lily became important.”

Lucas clenched his fists.

“So you turned against her.”

Richard nodded.

“She became unreliable.”

Lucas stared.

The entire time...

Everyone thought Vanessa was the mastermind.

But she had been a weapon.

And Richard was the person holding it.

That evening, Lucas returned home.

He found Lily sitting by the window.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Is Uncle Richard bad?”

Lucas froze.

Children should not have to ask questions like that.

He sat beside her.

“I don't know how to explain it.”

Lily looked down.

“Mommy said bad people aren't always scary.”

Lucas looked at her.

“What did she mean?”

The little girl whispered:

“Sometimes bad people are the ones who make you feel safe.”

Lucas felt tears burn his eyes.

Because Emma had known.

She had seen everything.

And now he finally understood.

The biggest betrayal had never come from an enemy.

It came from someone who had been sitting at his family table for years.

But Richard had made one mistake.

He underestimated Lily.

And he underestimated a father protecting his daughter.

Because Lucas Bennett was no longer fighting to save his reputation.

May you like

He was fighting to expose everyone who tried to destroy his family.
