CHAPTER 11 — THE EMPIRE BURNS

CHAPTER 11 — THE EMPIRE BURNS
Nathan stood motionless in the abandoned research facility.
The sealed envelope trembled in his hand.
Across from him, Victoria was crying.
Daniel was staring at the birth certificate.
And somewhere in the darkness beyond the walls, Grace and the children were being held by someone who had spent years controlling the Cole family from the shadows.
Nathan looked down at the final sentence written inside the envelope.
Never trust the woman who knows too much.
He slowly folded the paper.
Then looked at Victoria.
“Did my father write this?”
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
“Before he died?”
She hesitated.
“I don't know.”
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“You're hiding something again.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me.”
Victoria wiped her tears.
“My father knew about Alexander.”
Nathan froze.
“Your father?”
“Yes.”
“And he knew Alexander was Nathan's son?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't he tell me?”
Victoria looked away.
“Because he helped Edward.”
Nathan felt his stomach tighten.
“Helped him do what?”
“Build the program.”
“The genetic program?”
“Yes.”
“And steal my child?”
Victoria nodded.
Nathan took a step toward her.
“Why?”
Victoria's voice broke.
“Because my father believed the Cole family was going to collapse.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“So he helped destroy it?”
“He thought he was saving it.”
“By stealing children?”
“He wasn't thinking about children.”
Nathan stared.
“What was he thinking about?”
“Power.”
Silence.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
“Nathan…”
“What?”
“The stock exchange has suspended trading in Cole Group.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“Why?”
Daniel stared at his screen.
“Because someone just announced that you have been declared mentally incompetent.”
Nathan went still.
“What?”
“They filed emergency documents claiming you're unstable.”
Victoria whispered:
“Richard.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked up.
“It came from the board.”
Nathan's face changed.
“Who controls the board?”
Daniel hesitated.
“The trust.”
Nathan understood.
The trust was controlled by Richard.
Richard controlled the trust.
The trust controlled the company.
And now someone had declared Nathan incompetent.
His own empire was being taken from him.
In real time.
THE BOARDROOM
By sunrise, the Cole Group's headquarters had become a battlefield.
Lawyers.
Journalists.
Shareholders.
Security guards.
Every television screen showed the same headline:
COLE HEIR DECLARED UNFIT AS FAMILY EMPIRE FACES SECRET INHERITANCE CRISIS
Nathan stepped out of the elevator.
Cameras immediately turned toward him.
“Mr. Cole!”
“Are you stepping down?”
“Is it true that you're mentally unstable?”
“Did you illegally conceal your daughter?”
“Where is the missing money?”
Nathan didn't answer.
Daniel pushed through the crowd.
“Move!”
They reached the boardroom.
Every director was already seated.
At the head of the table sat Richard.
Nathan stopped.
Richard smiled.
“You're late.”
Nathan looked around.
“This is my company.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
He placed a document on the table.
“It's the company's new leadership.”
Nathan picked it up.
His name had been removed.
Richard's name was listed as interim chairman.
Nathan stared.
“You forged this.”
“No.”
“You manipulated the trust.”
“No.”
“You stole my shares.”
Richard leaned back.
“Legally transferred.”
Nathan laughed.
“You're going to prison.”
Richard smiled.
“Maybe.”
He pushed another document forward.
“But you'll never own this company again.”
Nathan looked down.
The document showed something worse.
His voting rights had been suspended.
Richard had gained control of sixty-two percent of the company.
Nathan looked at Daniel.
“Can they do this?”
Daniel's face was grim.
“Not permanently.”
“How long?”
“Until we challenge the trust.”
Richard smiled.
“You won't have time.”
Nathan looked at him.
“Why?”
Richard leaned forward.
“Because by tonight, the Cole Group will be insolvent.”
The room erupted.
Nathan stared.
“You're destroying the company.”
Richard smiled.
“No.”
He whispered:
“I'm destroying you.”
THE MONEY
Daniel pulled Nathan aside.
“It's worse than we thought.”
“What?”
“The seventy-three million wasn't the only money.”
Nathan turned.
“How much?”
“Three hundred million.”
Nathan froze.
“Where?”
“Transferred over the last six months.”
“To whom?”
“Shell companies.”
“Who owns them?”
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Your father's old legal entities.”
Nathan stared.
“Edward.”
“Yes.”
“He's draining the company.”
Daniel nodded.
“Everything.”
Nathan looked through the glass at Richard.
“He wants the company dead.”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“He wants the company empty.”
Nathan understood.
Once the assets were removed, Richard could allow the company to collapse.
Then buy the valuable divisions for almost nothing.
Nathan whispered:
“And the trust?”
“Would follow the assets.”
Richard wouldn't need to steal the empire.
He could simply make it disappear.
THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
Nathan returned to the mansion.
Victoria was waiting.
She looked exhausted.
Nathan placed the documents on the table.
“Your father is helping Richard.”
“Yes.”
“And Edward.”
“Yes.”
Nathan stared at her.
“Tell me everything.”
Victoria took a breath.
“My father is named Alejandro Robles.”
Nathan knew the name.
Alejandro Robles.
One of Mexico's most powerful financial investors.
A man whose influence extended across banks, hospitals, and political circles.
“He and Edward met twenty-five years ago.”
Victoria continued.
“They created a private investment network.”
“For what?”
“To control medical research.”
Nathan frowned.
“Why?”
“Because they believed whoever controlled genetics would control the next generation of wealth.”
Nathan stared.
“And the children?”
“They were experiments.”
His face hardened.
“They were never experiments to me.”
Victoria shook her head.
“I know.”
“Did you ever love me?”
Victoria looked down.
“Yes.”
Nathan said nothing.
“I loved you before I knew what my father had done.”
“Then why did you stay?”
“Because when I tried to leave, he threatened Alexander.”
Nathan's expression changed.
“He knew about him?”
“He knew everything.”
“Where was Alexander?”
“Hidden.”
“Where?”
Victoria looked toward the window.
“I don't know anymore.”
Nathan's voice became cold.
“Then find out.”
“I've tried.”
“Try harder.”
Victoria nodded.
Then she said something that stopped him.
“There is another reason my father wanted you.”
Nathan turned.
“What?”
“He wanted your DNA.”
Nathan frowned.
“Why?”
Victoria swallowed.
“Because your genetic profile was the missing piece.”
Nathan stared.
“The mutation.”
“Yes.”
“He needed me.”
“Yes.”
“For the program.”
Victoria nodded.
“And when you refused to participate…”
“I never knew about it.”
“Exactly.”
She looked at him.
“That's why Edward took your genetic material without your knowledge.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“And Alexander was created.”
“Yes.”
THE FIRE
That afternoon, Nathan received an alert.
One of the Cole Group's largest hotels was on fire.
Then another.
Then another.
Three properties.
Three cities.
Three fires.
Nathan stared at the news.
Daniel rushed into the room.
“It's happening.”
“What?”
“The insurance policies were canceled yesterday.”
Nathan looked at him.
“By whom?”
“Richard.”
Nathan's stomach dropped.
“This isn't about money.”
“No.”
Daniel opened his laptop.
“These fires were deliberate.”
Nathan stared at the footage.
Buildings burning.
People running.
Sirens.
His family name above the entrances.
Cole Group.
Cole Hotels.
Cole Development.
Everything his grandfather had built.
Everything his father had expanded.
Everything Nathan had spent his life protecting.
Burning.
And then Nathan understood.
Richard wasn't trying to save the empire.
He was erasing it.
Because an empire destroyed from within could never be traced back to the people who stole it.
Nathan looked at Daniel.
“Get every employee out.”
“We're already doing it.”
“Forget the stock price.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“Forget the company.”
Nathan's voice became firm.
“Save the people.”
THE CHOICE
By midnight, the damage was catastrophic.
Four hotels destroyed.
Two warehouses burned.
Three corporate offices evacuated.
Stock value collapsed.
Thousands of employees feared losing their jobs.
Nathan sat alone in the empty boardroom.
The empire was dying.
His empire.
His family's legacy.
Everything his father had told him to protect.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
Nathan answered.
Richard's voice came through.
“You see what happens when you fight?”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“Where are my children?”
“You're still thinking about them.”
“Of course I am.”
“Then you should understand.”
Richard paused.
“Everything you own is connected to them.”
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?”
“The trust.”
Nathan said nothing.
“Lily.”
Richard continued.
“Adrian.”
A pause.
“Alexander.”
Nathan's blood went cold.
“They are the keys.”
“To what?”
“To everything.”
Nathan stood.
“Where is Grace?”
“Alive.”
“Where?”
“Come to the old Cole estate.”
Nathan's voice became cold.
“And if I refuse?”
“You'll lose the company.”
Nathan laughed.
“You've already destroyed it.”
Richard went silent.
Nathan continued:
“You burned my hotels.”
“I did.”
“You destroyed jobs.”
“Yes.”
“You stole hundreds of millions.”
“Yes.”
“You think I care about the company anymore?”
Richard's voice changed.
“What?”
Nathan looked at the burning skyline.
“I don't.”
Silence.
“You made one mistake.”
“What?”
“You thought the empire was my family.”
Nathan's voice hardened.
“My family is Grace.”
A pause.
“Lily.”
Another.
“Adrian.”
“Alexander.”
“And I will burn every company, every building, every account myself before I let you use them against my children.”
Richard said nothing.
Nathan hung up.
THE ENVELOPE'S LAST SECRET
Daniel entered the room.
“Nathan.”
“What?”
“I found something.”
He handed Nathan the sealed envelope again.
“The paper has a hidden layer.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
“Heat-sensitive ink.”
Daniel held the document beneath a lamp.
Words slowly appeared.
Nathan stared.
IF THE EMPIRE BURNS, FIND THE WOMAN IN ROOM 17.
“What woman?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Nathan looked at the date.
Five years earlier.
Then another detail appeared.
SHE KNOWS WHERE GRACE WENT.
Nathan immediately stood.
“Find Room 17.”
Daniel checked the facility plans.
“There was a Room 17.”
“Where?”
“Old Cole Foundation.”
“Let's go.”
The room had been sealed for five years.
Nathan forced the door open.
Inside was a single chair.
A small table.
And an old woman sitting beside the window.
Nathan froze.
He recognized her.
It was his mother's sister.
His aunt Sofia.
He hadn't seen her since childhood.
“Sofia?”
She turned.
“You finally came.”
Nathan walked toward her.
“How are you alive?”
She smiled sadly.
“Your father didn't kill me.”
“Why did he hide you?”
“Because I knew too much.”
Nathan stared.
“About Grace?”
“Yes.”
“The children?”
“Yes.”
“Edward?”
She nodded.
Nathan took a breath.
“Where is Grace?”
Sofia looked at him.
“Before I tell you, you need to understand something.”
“What?”
“Your father didn't start this.”
Nathan frowned.
“Then who did?”
Sofia's eyes filled with fear.
“Your grandfather.”
Nathan froze.
“He died fifteen years ago.”
“Yes.”
“So?”
Sofia whispered:
“His empire never died with him.”
She handed Nathan a photograph.
It showed his grandfather.
Beside him stood Alejandro Robles.
And beside Alejandro—
a young Richard.
But there was one more person.
A woman.
Nathan stared.
He knew her.
It was his mother.
Sofia whispered:
“They planned everything before you were born.”
Nathan looked at the photograph.
“The children?”
“Yes.”
“Grace?”
“Yes.”
“Me?”
“Yes.”
Nathan's voice broke.
“Why?”
Sofia stared into his eyes.
“Because your family wasn't building an empire.”
She paused.
“They were building a bloodline.”
THE FINAL ROOM
Sofia led Nathan into another hidden room.
Inside was a wall covered with photographs.
Nathan.
Grace.
Lily.
Adrian.
Alexander.
Victoria.
Richard.
Edward.
Alejandro.
Everyone connected.
But one photograph stood at the center.
A woman holding a newborn.
Nathan stepped closer.
His heart stopped.
The woman was Grace.
The baby was Lily.
Beside them stood Nathan's mother.
And behind them—
Edward.
Nathan's voice trembled.
“What is this?”
Sofia looked at him.
“The night Grace disappeared.”
Nathan stared.
“That wasn't the night she ran away.”
“No.”
“What happened?”
Sofia's eyes filled with tears.
“She tried to escape.”
“From Edward?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she discovered what he intended to do with Lily.”
Nathan's blood went cold.
“What?”
Sofia whispered:
“He planned to take Lily too.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“And Grace fought him.”
“Yes.”
“Who helped her?”
“Your mother.”
Nathan opened his eyes.
“She saved Grace?”
“She tried.”
“What happened?”
Sofia looked away.
“Your mother was shot.”
Nathan's face went pale.
“She's alive.”
“Yes.”
“But where?”
Sofia pointed toward the photograph.
“She's with Grace.”
Nathan froze.
“What?”
“They've been hiding together for five years.”
Nathan's breath caught.
“Where?”
Sofia whispered:
“The house where your father never looked.”
Nathan stared.
“What house?”
Sofia smiled sadly.
“Your childhood home.”
Nathan suddenly understood.
The old family residence.
The one place Edward had abandoned after Nathan's mother's supposed death.
The one place no one would ever search.
Nathan turned toward the door.
“We're going.”
Outside, the rain had stopped.
The city was dark.
The Cole empire was burning.
But Nathan no longer cared.
For the first time, he understood what his father had never understood.
An empire could be rebuilt.
Money could be earned again.
Buildings could be replaced.
Companies could be recreated.
But childhood could not.
Trust could not.
A mother couldn't get back five stolen years.
And a child could never be given another first birthday.
Nathan looked toward the distant city.
“I'm bringing them home.”
Daniel nodded.
Victoria stood beside him.
But before they could leave, Nathan's phone vibrated.
A message.
One photograph.
Grace.
Alive.
Standing beside Lily.
Adrian.
Alexander.
And behind them—
Nathan's mother.
Under the photograph were six words:
COME BEFORE YOUR EMPIRE COMPLETELY BURNS.
Nathan stared.
Then another message appeared.
This time from an unknown number.
BRING VICTORIA.
Nathan slowly turned toward her.
Victoria's face had gone completely white.
She whispered:
“My father.”
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“No.”
He looked at the burning skyline.
“Someone else.”
Victoria shook her head.
“Who?”
Nathan looked at the photograph again.
There was one person missing.
Richard.
And then Nathan realized the most frightening possibility of all.
Richard hadn't kidnapped Grace.
He hadn't taken the children.
He hadn't started the fires.
He had only been following orders.
Nathan whispered:
“Edward.”
And somewhere in the darkness, a man who had supposedly been dead for five years watched the flames consume the Cole empire.
He smiled.
Because the empire was burning exactly as he had planned.
May you like
But his plan had one final stage.
Nathan had to choose which member of his family would inherit what remained.
