CHAPTER 14 — THE WOMAN HE CHOSE

CHAPTER 14 — THE WOMAN HE CHOSE
The first thing Nathan saw when he opened his eyes was concrete.
Cold gray walls.
A narrow bed.
A metal sink.
A single fluorescent light buzzing overhead.
For several seconds, he didn't remember where he was.
Then the handcuffs.
The arrest.
Lily crying.
Grace standing at the gates.
Everything came rushing back.
Nathan sat up slowly.
He had lost his company.
His fortune was frozen.
His reputation was collapsing.
And the woman he loved had just been framed for a crime she didn't commit.
Yet one thought remained stronger than all the others.
Grace.
He reached for his phone.
It wasn't there.
Of course.
A guard appeared outside the cell.
“Mr. Cole.”
Nathan stood.
“I need a lawyer.”
“You'll have one.”
“I need to make a call.”
“Not yet.”
Nathan stared at him.
“To my family.”
The guard hesitated.
Then walked away.
Nathan sat back down.
For the first time in his life, he had no assistant to solve the problem.
No private jet.
No boardroom.
No lawyers waiting outside.
No billions to make a phone call disappear.
He had nothing.
And strangely…
he felt free.
THE WOMAN WHO WAITED
Across the city, Grace sat in a small apartment with Lily asleep beside her.
Adrian was sleeping on the sofa.
Alexander sat by the window.
He hadn't spoken much since Nathan's arrest.
Grace looked at him.
“Are you all right?”
Alexander shook his head.
“Dad is in jail.”
“Yes.”
“Because of Victoria?”
Grace hesitated.
“That's what they say.”
“Is she bad?”
Grace sighed.
“I don't know.”
Alexander looked down.
“Grandfather said everyone would leave me.”
Grace sat beside him.
“Your father won't.”
“How do you know?”
“Because he gave up everything for you.”
Alexander looked at her.
“He gave up the company.”
“He did.”
“Why?”
Grace smiled sadly.
“Because he finally understood something.”
“What?”
“That a family isn't something you own.”
Alexander thought about that.
Then whispered:
“I think I love him.”
Grace's heart tightened.
“You can.”
“But I barely know him.”
“Then you have time.”
Alexander looked toward the window.
“Do you love him?”
Grace didn't answer immediately.
She looked at Lily.
Then at the empty chair where Nathan should have been.
“Yes.”
Her voice was barely audible.
“But loving someone doesn't mean forgetting what they did.”
VICTORIA'S LAST CHANCE
Victoria sat alone in an interrogation room.
Her father had abandoned her.
Richard had betrayed her.
The police had found documents bearing her signature.
And every piece of evidence seemed to point toward her.
The door opened.
A lawyer entered.
“I represent your father.”
Victoria looked up.
“What does he want?”
“He wants you to cooperate.”
“With whom?”
“With the authorities.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“That's rich.”
The lawyer placed a folder on the table.
“If you testify against Nathan, your father will make sure your charges disappear.”
Victoria stared.
“Against Nathan?”
“Yes.”
“And what happens to Grace?”
The lawyer shrugged.
“That's irrelevant.”
Victoria pushed the folder away.
“No.”
The lawyer frowned.
“No?”
“I won't.”
“You could spend years in prison.”
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“Your father will destroy you.”
“He already did.”
She stood.
“Tell him something.”
“What?”
Victoria's voice became steady.
“I am done being afraid of him.”
The lawyer gathered the papers.
“You'll regret this.”
Victoria looked at him.
“I've regretted being silent for five years.”
THE VISIT
That afternoon, Grace arrived at the detention center.
She stood behind the glass.
Nathan entered the room.
The moment he saw her, his expression changed.
Grace lifted the phone.
Nathan did the same.
Neither spoke.
For several seconds, they simply looked at each other.
Then Grace whispered:
“You look terrible.”
Nathan laughed.
“So do you.”
She smiled through tears.
“I brought Lily's drawing.”
Nathan looked at the paper she held.
A family of five stood beneath a yellow sun.
Nathan.
Grace.
Lily.
Adrian.
Alexander.
Nathan's eyes filled.
“She drew this?”
“Yes.”
“Can I keep it?”
Grace nodded.
Nathan pressed his hand against the glass.
Grace placed hers against the other side.
“I'll get you out.”
Grace shook her head.
“No.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
“You don't have to save me.”
“I want to.”
“That's the problem.”
Nathan stared.
Grace continued:
“For five years, I survived without you.”
Nathan's face fell.
“I know.”
“I raised Lily.”
“I know.”
“I protected her.”
“I know.”
“I made every decision alone.”
Nathan lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
Grace's voice softened.
“But I don't want to spend the rest of my life punishing you for what your family did.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Then what do you want?”
Grace took a breath.
“I want to know who you are when nobody is watching.”
Nathan didn't answer.
Grace continued:
“Not the billionaire.”
“Not the heir.”
“Not the man everyone expects you to be.”
She touched the glass.
“Just Nathan.”
He swallowed.
“And if you don't like what you find?”
“Then I'll walk away.”
Nathan nodded.
“That would be fair.”
Grace smiled sadly.
“I never wanted your money.”
“I know.”
“I never wanted your company.”
“I know.”
“I only wanted you to know Lily existed.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“I wish I had known.”
“I know.”
“And if I could go back…”
“You can't.”
Nathan looked at her.
“No.”
“But you can decide what happens next.”
THE WOMAN HE CHOSE
Nathan's lawyer arrived that evening.
Daniel.
He placed a thick folder on the table.
“We have a problem.”
Nathan looked up.
“What?”
“The evidence against you is real.”
Nathan frowned.
“Meaning?”
“The signatures are authentic.”
Nathan's heart sank.
“Then someone used my identity.”
“Exactly.”
“Who?”
Daniel slid a photograph across the table.
Alejandro Robles.
Nathan stared.
“Victoria's father.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Daniel opened the folder.
“Your father created a biometric authorization system years ago.”
Nathan frowned.
“My fingerprints?”
“Not just fingerprints.”
Daniel pointed to the screen.
“Voice pattern. Facial recognition. DNA authentication.”
Nathan stared.
“My DNA?”
“Yes.”
“Then whoever has access to my biological records can create transactions that appear to come from me.”
Nathan suddenly understood.
“The genetic program.”
Daniel nodded.
“They weren't just studying your DNA.”
“They were building an identity.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“They could impersonate me.”
“Financially.”
“Legally.”
“Digitally.”
Nathan leaned back.
“So all those transactions…”
“Could have been created in your name.”
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“Then the entire case is fabricated.”
“Not entirely.”
“What do you mean?”
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Some transactions really happened.”
“Which ones?”
“The ones that transferred the company.”
Nathan froze.
“Who authorized those?”
Daniel looked at him.
“You did.”
Nathan stared.
“I signed the transfer.”
“You did.”
“To protect the children.”
“Yes.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“And that's why they can claim you intentionally destroyed the company.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“So I saved my children…”
“And created the evidence they needed to imprison you.”
Nathan looked down.
Then smiled.
“Good.”
Daniel frowned.
“Good?”
“They think I destroyed the empire.”
“Yes.”
“They don't understand what I transferred.”
Daniel's eyes widened.
“What?”
Nathan leaned forward.
“The trust.”
THE TRAP INSIDE THE TRUST
Nathan had transferred the controlling ownership of the Cole empire.
But he had deliberately placed the assets into an independent trust.
No family member could control it.
Not Nathan.
Not Richard.
Not Edward.
Not Alejandro.
And most importantly—
not the government.
Daniel slowly understood.
“You protected the assets.”
Nathan nodded.
“Exactly.”
“So even if they convict you…”
“The children still inherit everything.”
Daniel smiled.
“But there's another problem.”
“What?”
“The trust contains a clause.”
Nathan frowned.
“What clause?”
Daniel opened the document.
“If all original beneficiaries are declared incapable of inheriting, control temporarily transfers to the fifth heir.”
Nathan's smile disappeared.
“The fifth child.”
Daniel nodded.
“The child Edward mentioned.”
Nathan stared at the document.
“Who is it?”
“We don't know.”
“Then find out.”
Daniel hesitated.
“There may be another problem.”
“What?”
“The fifth heir has already been registered.”
Nathan's face changed.
“Under what name?”
Daniel slid the document forward.
Nathan looked down.
The name was partially concealed.
Only the initials remained.
A.C.
Nathan's heart stopped.
“Alexander Cole?”
“No.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Alexander is already listed.”
Nathan stared at the initials.
“Then who?”
Daniel whispered:
“Adrian Cole.”
Nathan's blood ran cold.
“That can't be right.”
“Exactly.”
Nathan suddenly understood.
Adrian's identity had been changed.
Someone had registered him as the fifth heir.
But why?
GRACE FINDS THE TRUTH
Grace was at the apartment when someone knocked.
She opened the door.
Victoria stood outside.
Her face was bruised.
Her clothes were wet from the rain.
Grace immediately stepped back.
“What are you doing here?”
“I need your help.”
Grace almost laughed.
“You helped destroy my life.”
“I know.”
“You knew about Lily.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Nathan.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about Alexander.”
“Yes.”
“And you still stayed with him.”
Victoria lowered her eyes.
“I was afraid.”
Grace stared.
“Fear explains things.”
She paused.
“It doesn't excuse them.”
“I know.”
Victoria held out a folder.
“I found this in my father's private office.”
Grace didn't take it.
“What is it?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
“That Edward never died.”
Grace froze.
“What?”
Victoria opened the folder.
Inside was a recent photograph.
Edward.
Alive.
Standing beside a newborn baby.
Grace stared.
The baby had a tiny birthmark on his left shoulder.
Her face went pale.
“No.”
Victoria whispered:
“This photograph was taken three months ago.”
Grace's hands began trembling.
“That's impossible.”
“Why?”
Grace stared at the baby.
“Because that child…”
She stopped.
Victoria waited.
“Because that child was born six years ago.”
Victoria frowned.
“What?”
Grace looked at her.
“That photograph isn't of a newborn.”
She pointed.
“Look at the date.”
Victoria did.
Her face changed.
The photograph was dated three months ago.
But the child was clearly older.
Approximately six years old.
Grace whispered:
“It's Alexander.”
Victoria stared.
“That means Edward didn't take him five years ago.”
Grace shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward the window.
“He took him three months ago.”
THE HOUSE OF THE FIFTH CHILD
Nathan received the information at midnight.
Daniel had found the same photograph.
Nathan stared at it.
“Three months.”
“Yes.”
“Then where was Alexander before that?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Living with Victoria.”
Nathan's expression changed.
“She said she believed he was dead.”
“She lied.”
Nathan looked at the photograph.
“No.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“She didn't know.”
“How do you know?”
“Because if she knew, Edward wouldn't have needed to take Alexander.”
Nathan thought carefully.
“Someone else gave him up.”
Daniel's eyes widened.
“Who?”
Nathan stared at the photograph.
“Grace.”
Daniel froze.
“Why would Grace give up Alexander?”
Nathan's face hardened.
“To save Lily.”
THE WOMAN HE CHOSE
Nathan finally understood.
Five years ago, Grace hadn't disappeared because she wanted to hide Lily from Nathan.
She had disappeared because Edward had threatened all three children.
Grace had made a choice.
She had kept Lily.
She had allowed Alexander to remain hidden.
And she had sacrificed herself.
Nathan's chest tightened.
For five years, he had believed Grace had chosen to leave him.
Now he understood.
She had chosen to protect their children.
And now she was doing it again.
Nathan's lawyer entered.
“We can challenge the charges.”
Nathan nodded.
“Do it.”
“We also need your decision about the company.”
Nathan looked up.
“What decision?”
“The board wants to know whether you'll attempt to reclaim control.”
Nathan thought of the burning hotels.
The millions.
The boardroom.
His father's empire.
Then he thought of Grace.
Lily.
Adrian.
Alexander.
He shook his head.
“No.”
His lawyer looked surprised.
“No?”
“I don't want the company.”
Nathan stood.
“I want my family.”
THE RELEASE
At dawn, a new witness appeared.
Victoria.
She handed investigators every document she had.
Bank transfers.
Genetic records.
Private messages.
Photographs.
Voice recordings.
And one final piece of evidence.
A recording of Alejandro.
His voice was unmistakable.
“Nathan must lose everything.
Once he has nothing, he will surrender the children.”
The recording ended.
The charges against Nathan began collapsing.
By noon, the court ordered his immediate release.
Nathan walked through the courthouse doors.
Reporters surrounded him.
But he didn't stop.
Grace was waiting across the street.
Lily stood beside her.
The little girl saw him.
“Daddy!”
Nathan ran.
He dropped to his knees.
Lily threw herself into his arms.
He held her tightly.
Then Adrian approached.
Nathan opened his arms.
Adrian hugged him.
Alexander followed.
Three children.
Three lives.
One family.
Grace stood several feet away.
Nathan looked at her.
She smiled.
For the first time, there was no fear in her eyes.
Nathan walked toward her.
“I chose you.”
Grace's smile faded slightly.
“What?”
“I chose you.”
“Over the empire?”
“Over everything.”
Grace looked at him.
“You don't even know what tomorrow looks like.”
“No.”
“You could lose everything.”
“I already did.”
Nathan took her hand.
“And I'd do it again.”
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
Nathan whispered:
“I don't need to be a billionaire.”
“I don't need the Cole name.”
“I don't need the company.”
“I just need a chance to be the man I should have been five years ago.”
Grace stared at him.
Then slowly squeezed his hand.
“One chance.”
Nathan smiled.
“One is enough.”
But before they could embrace, Daniel came running across the street.
“Nathan!”
Nathan turned.
“What?”
Daniel held up his phone.
“We found Edward.”
Nathan's smile disappeared.
“Where?”
Daniel looked toward Grace.
“He's at the hospital.”
Grace's face went pale.
“Why?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Because someone shot him.”
Nathan froze.
“Who?”
Daniel looked at Victoria.
She was standing behind them.
Her face was filled with horror.
Then Daniel said:
“The police found the gun.”
Nathan stared.
“Whose gun?”
Daniel whispered:
“Richard's.”
Silence.
Grace's hand tightened around Nathan's.
Nathan looked toward the hospital.
Edward was alive.
Richard was apparently trying to kill him.
And the fifth heir was still missing.
Nathan's expression hardened.
“Take me there.”
Grace stepped forward.
“I'm coming.”
Nathan looked at her.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You said you chose me.”
“Yes.”
“Then stop trying to protect me by leaving me behind.”
Nathan stared at her.
Then smiled.
“All right.”
He reached for her hand.
Together, they walked toward the car.
Behind them, Lily, Adrian, and Alexander followed.
For the first time, Nathan wasn't walking toward an empire.
He was walking toward his family.
But at the hospital, behind a locked door, Edward opened his eyes.
A doctor stood beside him.
“You survived.”
Edward smiled faintly.
“I knew I would.”
The doctor looked nervous.
“There's something you need to know.”
Edward turned.
“What?”
“The fifth heir has been found.”
Edward's smile vanished.
“Where?”
The doctor leaned closer.
“She's with Nathan.”
Edward's eyes widened.
“She's a girl?”
The doctor nodded.
Edward whispered:
“Then it's already too late.”
Outside the hospital room, Nathan's footsteps approached.
And for the first time in decades, Edward Cole looked afraid.
Because the woman Nathan had chosen was not merely the mother of his children.
She was the one person who possessed the final piece of the truth.
May you like
And once Grace revealed it…
the Cole family would never be the same again.
