CHAPTER 7 — THE CHILD WHO INHERITED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 7 — THE CHILD WHO INHERITED EVERYTHING

Nathan read the DNA report twice.

Then a third time.

The words refused to make sense.

BIOLOGICAL FATHER: UNKNOWN TO COLE FAMILY RECORDS.

Below it was a second line.

PATERNITY EXCLUSION: NATHAN COLE — 99.98%.

Nathan looked up slowly.

The little boy standing across the room was watching him.

Adrian.

The child he had spent years believing had been stolen from his family.

The child his father had hidden.

The child whose name now controlled hundreds of millions of dollars.

But apparently—

Nathan wasn't his father.

“How old is he?” Nathan asked.

Elena Reed swallowed.

“Four years.”

Nathan looked at Adrian.

“Who is his father?”

Elena hesitated.

“I don't know.”

“You just showed me a DNA report.”

“Yes.”

“Then somebody knows.”

She looked away.

“The laboratory identified a biological match.”

“Who?”

“I wasn't given the complete identity.”

“Why?”

“Because the test was ordered under a confidential account.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“Who ordered it?”

Elena's voice dropped.

“Your father.”

Nathan's face hardened.

“My father knew Adrian wasn't mine.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he call him a Cole?”

“Because blood wasn't the only thing he cared about.”

Nathan looked at the inheritance documents.

“What did he want?”

Elena didn't answer.

Instead, she pointed toward Adrian.

“Ask him.”

Nathan turned.

The boy was holding a small wooden car.

“Adrian?”

The child looked up.

“Yes?”

“Do you know who your father is?”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

“Do you know who your mother is?”

“Mommy Grace.”

Nathan's heart tightened.

“Did Grace bring you here?”

Adrian nodded.

“Sometimes.”

“Sometimes?”

“She cried a lot.”

Nathan crouched.

“Do you remember the last time you saw her?”

Adrian thought.

Then nodded.

“She told me to hide.”

“Why?”

“Because the bad man was coming.”

Nathan's stomach dropped.

“What bad man?”

Adrian's eyes shifted toward the hallway.

“He wears a silver ring.”

Nathan immediately thought of Richard.

But then Adrian continued.

“He smells like Grandpa.”

Nathan froze.

Elena stepped forward.

“That's enough.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You know who he means.”

“I have an idea.”

“Tell me.”

“I can't.”

“You brought me here.”

“I brought you here because you needed to see him.”

Nathan stared at Adrian.

“Why?”

“Because the moment you saw him, the inheritance would become real.”

Nathan frowned.

“What inheritance?”

Elena handed him another document.

“The Cole Family Trust.”

Nathan opened it.

His eyes widened.

There was a clause he had never seen before.

In the event of multiple biological descendants, all controlling assets shall be placed under the eldest surviving male heir until the youngest heir reaches twenty-five.

Nathan read it again.

“Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“He's the eldest.”

Elena nodded.

“By twelve minutes.”

Nathan looked toward the boy.

“And Lily?”

“The younger twin.”

Nathan's expression changed.

“So Adrian controls the trust.”

“Not exactly.”

Elena pointed to another paragraph.

“The trustee controls it on his behalf.”

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

“Who is the trustee?”

Elena looked at him.

“Your uncle Richard.”

Nathan's blood ran cold.

For five years, Richard had been quietly moving money.

Five years of forged documents.

Five years of false transfers.

Five years of maintaining control.

And now Nathan understood why.

He didn't need to own the empire.

He needed to control the child who legally owned it.

Nathan closed the document.

“Where is Richard?”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Where is his money going?”

“I don't know.”

“Who is helping him?”

“I don't know.”

Nathan slammed the folder shut.

“Everyone keeps telling me they don't know.”

Elena flinched.

Then Adrian spoke.

“I know.”

Everyone turned.

Nathan crouched again.

“What do you know?”

Adrian pointed toward the desk.

“He comes here.”

“Who?”

“The man with the silver ring.”

“When?”

“At night.”

“Does he talk to you?”

Adrian nodded.

“What does he say?”

“He says I'm special.”

Nathan felt a chill.

“What else?”

“He says everything will be mine.”

Nathan's jaw tightened.

“Did he tell you his name?”

Adrian shook his head.

“He says I'm not supposed to say.”

Nathan glanced at Elena.

“What did Richard do to him?”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“He never hurt him physically.”

“That wasn't my question.”

She looked down.

“He taught him to fear everyone.”

Nathan stared at the child.

Then he understood.

Adrian wasn't being protected.

He was being controlled.

The next morning, Nathan returned to the mansion.

He had barely stepped inside when his security chief approached.

“Mr. Cole.”

“What?”

“We have a problem.”

Nathan stopped.

“What kind?”

“Someone accessed the private vault.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“When?”

“Last night.”

“What was taken?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why is it a problem?”

The security chief handed him a photograph.

A fingerprint had been left on the vault door.

Nathan stared.

He recognized it.

Richard.

“Check the cameras.”

“We did.”

“And?”

The security chief hesitated.

“The cameras were disabled.”

Nathan looked at him.

“All of them?”

“For exactly seven minutes.”

“Who disabled them?”

“We're investigating.”

Nathan walked toward the vault.

The door was open.

Inside were dozens of documents.

His father's estate records.

The original trust.

Birth certificates.

Stock certificates.

Nathan began searching.

Then he stopped.

One folder was missing.

PROJECT A-2.

He had never heard of it.

He turned toward Daniel.

“Find out what this is.”

Daniel took the folder number.

“I will.”

Nathan looked around the vault.

“Wait.”

He noticed something beneath the desk.

A small metal box.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Two newborn babies.

Lily.

Adrian.

And beside them—

Grace.

Nathan touched the photograph.

On the back was a handwritten note.

THE CHILDREN MUST NEVER BE RAISED TOGETHER.

Nathan's breathing stopped.

Below that:

ONE WILL CONTROL THE EMPIRE.

And beneath that, in different handwriting:

THE OTHER WILL DESTROY IT.

Meanwhile, Grace was finally released.

Nathan had arranged bail through his legal team.

When she stepped outside, she expected to see him.

He wasn't there.

Instead, Daniel was waiting.

Grace immediately asked:

“Where is Lily?”

“She is safe.”

“And Nathan?”

“He's working.”

Grace studied him.

“What happened?”

Daniel hesitated.

“There's been another discovery.”

“What?”

“Adrian.”

Grace went completely still.

“You found him?”

“Yes.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Where?”

“Safe.”

Grace covered her mouth.

“Oh God.”

Daniel watched her.

“There's something Nathan doesn't know.”

Grace looked at him.

“What?”

“The DNA test.”

Her expression changed.

“What about it?”

“Adrian isn't Nathan's biological son.”

Grace's eyes widened.

“I know.”

Daniel froze.

“You knew?”

Grace closed her eyes.

“For five years.”

“Who is Adrian's father?”

Grace shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Then how could you know Nathan wasn't his father?”

Grace looked at him.

“Because I knew who his biological father was.”

Daniel stared.

“Who?”

Grace whispered:

“Someone who died before Adrian was born.”

Daniel's face changed.

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

She walked toward the car.

Daniel followed.

“Grace, what are you talking about?”

She stopped.

Then looked back.

“Adrian wasn't conceived the way you think.”

That afternoon, Nathan finally learned what Project A-2 meant.

Daniel placed a classified file on his desk.

“It was a private genetic research program.”

Nathan stared at the documents.

“Whose program?”

“Your father funded it.”

“Why?”

Daniel turned a page.

“Because he was trying to identify a genetic condition within the Cole bloodline.”

Nathan frowned.

“What condition?”

“Something called hereditary cardiac mosaicism.”

Nathan stared.

“Meaning?”

“Certain members of the family carried a rare genetic mutation.”

“Who?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Your father.”

Nathan went silent.

“And me?”

“Negative.”

Nathan looked up.

“Then who?”

Daniel placed another page in front of him.

“Adrian.”

Nathan's face went pale.

“And Lily?”

“Negative.”

Nathan slowly sat down.

“So Adrian inherited something from his biological father.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Daniel pointed to the genetic profile.

“The lab identified a partial match.”

Nathan stared.

“With whom?”

Daniel took a breath.

“Richard.”

Nathan's eyes widened.

“No.”

“It's a partial familial match.”

“Richard is his uncle.”

“Which means Richard could share genetic markers.”

Nathan shook his head.

“You said the test excluded me.”

“Yes.”

“But it doesn't prove Richard is his father.”

“No.”

Nathan stood.

“Then we test Richard.”

Daniel looked at him.

“There's a problem.”

“What?”

“Richard disappeared.”

Richard had already left the country.

By the time Nathan's team reached his house, it was empty.

His office had been cleaned.

His computer was gone.

His passport was missing.

Every trace of his financial activity had been erased.

But he had made one mistake.

He had forgotten about the old family warehouse.

Nathan found him there.

Or rather—

he found evidence that Richard had been there.

Boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

And a single video recording.

Nathan pressed play.

Richard appeared on the screen.

“If you're watching this, Nathan, you've finally discovered Adrian.”

Nathan stared.

Richard looked strangely calm.

“You think I stole your inheritance.”

Nathan's jaw tightened.

“You'd be right.”

Richard continued.

“But you're wrong about why.”

Nathan stepped closer to the screen.

“Your father believed Adrian was the key to controlling the empire.”

Richard paused.

“He was.”

Then his expression changed.

“But not because Adrian was his grandson.”

Nathan froze.

Richard leaned closer to the camera.

“Adrian was the only person who could expose what your father did.”

The video ended.

Nathan stared at the blank screen.

Then another video automatically began.

This time—

Grace appeared.

She was younger.

Pregnant.

Crying.

Nathan's heart shattered.

Her voice trembled.

“I'm sorry, Nathan.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you're watching this, they failed to keep you away from the truth.”

She touched her stomach.

“Lily is yours.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“But Adrian…”

Grace's face broke.

“He isn't.”

Nathan's eyes opened.

Grace continued.

“Adrian was conceived using genetic material taken from someone your father wanted erased.”

Nathan stopped breathing.

“Someone whose identity was never supposed to be discovered.”

The recording ended.

Nathan stared at the screen.

His mind raced.

Someone erased.

Someone whose DNA created Adrian.

Someone whose identity could destroy the Cole family.

Then he heard footsteps.

Daniel entered.

“Nathan.”

“What?”

“We found the missing financial records.”

“Where?”

“Inside Richard's offshore accounts.”

Nathan waited.

“There are payments.”

“To whom?”

Daniel placed the statement on the desk.

Nathan read the name.

His face went pale.

The payments had been made every month for four years.

To a private facility.

A children's rehabilitation center.

Nathan stared.

“Adrian?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“And the other payments?”

Daniel swallowed.

“There were two accounts.”

Nathan looked at him.

“One for Adrian.”

“And the other?”

Daniel turned the page.

A woman's name appeared.

GRACE BENNETT.

Nathan frowned.

“She was being paid?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel pointed to the beneficiary.

Nathan's blood ran cold.

It was an account belonging to someone listed as deceased.

ELIAS COLE.

Nathan's grandfather.

Dead for fifteen years.

Nathan stared.

“That's impossible.”

Daniel shook his head.

“We checked.”

“Then what does it mean?”

Daniel's voice became quiet.

“Someone has been using your grandfather's identity.”

Nathan looked at the documents.

Then toward the window.

For the first time, he understood that the missing money wasn't simply stolen.

It had been used to maintain a secret operation.

An operation that involved Grace.

Lily.

Adrian.

And a dead man.

Nathan picked up his phone.

“Find the rehabilitation center.”

Daniel nodded.

“And find out who has been using my grandfather's identity.”

Nathan paused.

“Because if someone is still signing documents as Elias Cole…”

He looked at the photograph of the twins.

“…then someone wants me to believe the dead are still running my family.”

His phone suddenly vibrated.

An unknown number.

Nathan answered.

A man's voice whispered:

“You're getting too close.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“Who is this?”

“You want your children?”

“Yes.”

“Then stop looking for the money.”

“Where are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“Ask your fiancée what happened to the third child.”

Nathan froze.

“What third child?”

The line went dead.

Nathan slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel stared at him.

“What did he say?”

Nathan looked toward the photograph.

Lily.

Adrian.

Two children.

But the voice had said—

third child.

And somewhere in the Cole family's buried history, there might be another child whose existence had been erased completely.

May you like

A child whose disappearance could explain why seventy-three million dollars had vanished.

A child who might be the real reason Nathan's father had built the entire conspiracy in the first place.
