CHAPTER 12 — THE TRIAL OF THE FAMILY

CHAPTER 12 — THE TRIAL OF THE FAMILY
By sunrise, the Cole empire was no longer merely collapsing.
It was bleeding.
Every major news network carried images of burning hotels, evacuated office towers, frozen bank accounts, and frightened employees standing outside buildings that had once represented one of Mexico's most powerful business dynasties.
And beneath every headline was the same question:
Where is Nathan Cole?
Nathan had no intention of answering the press.
Not yet.
He had one priority.
His family.
But before he could reach the old house, his phone rang.
It was Daniel.
“Nathan.”
“What?”
“You need to see this.”
Daniel sent him a video.
Nathan opened it.
His face went cold.
It was Richard.
Standing in front of a courthouse.
Behind him were lawyers, reporters, and several members of the Cole board.
Richard looked directly into the cameras.
“My nephew Nathan Cole has demonstrated an alarming pattern of instability.”
Nathan's jaw tightened.
“He's accusing members of his own family of crimes without evidence.”
Richard continued.
“He has abandoned his responsibilities and placed the company in extraordinary danger.”
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“For the protection of our employees and shareholders, I have filed an emergency petition to remove Nathan Cole from control of the family trust.”
Daniel cursed under his breath.
Nathan stared at the screen.
“He's taking me to court.”
“No,” Daniel said.
“He's taking the children to court.”
Nathan looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel's expression was grim.
“The petition claims Lily, Adrian, and Alexander are legally incapable of inheriting anything.”
Nathan's eyes hardened.
“And who gets control?”
“Richard.”
Nathan said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“There is a hearing in three hours.”
Nathan looked toward the road.
“Then we'll be there.”
THE COURTROOM
The courthouse was surrounded by reporters.
Security barely managed to control the crowd.
When Nathan stepped from the car, cameras exploded around him.
“Mr. Cole!”
“Are you mentally fit to run the company?”
“Did you fabricate the existence of a fourth heir?”
“Where are the children?”
“Is Grace Bennett alive?”
Nathan kept walking.
Then someone shouted:
“Did your family steal millions from the company?”
Nathan stopped.
He turned toward the cameras.
“Yes.”
The crowd erupted.
Nathan continued:
“And I'm going to prove exactly who stole it.”
Then he walked inside.
Richard was already waiting.
His lawyers surrounded him.
Victoria stood on the other side of the courtroom.
She looked terrified.
Nathan walked past her.
“You shouldn't be here.”
“I had to come.”
“Why?”
“Because they're going to blame me.”
Nathan stopped.
“Are you guilty?”
Victoria looked him in the eyes.
“I've lied.”
“That wasn't my question.”
She lowered her head.
“I didn't steal the money.”
“Did you help Edward?”
“Yes.”
“Did you help him take Alexander?”
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know he was alive.”
Nathan stared at her.
“Then today you tell the truth.”
“I will.”
Richard watched them from across the courtroom.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
He wasn't worried.
Nathan noticed.
That frightened him more than anything else.
THE PETITION
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
After the formalities, Richard's attorney approached.
“Your Honor, this case concerns the protection of a family estate valued at several billion dollars.”
Nathan listened silently.
“The respondent, Nathan Cole, has demonstrated severe emotional instability following the disappearance of his fiancée and the discovery of several children whose legal status remains uncertain.”
Nathan's jaw tightened.
The lawyer continued.
“He has made unsupported accusations against family members and authorized actions that have caused catastrophic losses to the Cole Group.”
The judge looked toward Nathan.
“Mr. Cole, do you have counsel?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stepped forward.
But before he could speak, Richard's attorney produced a document.
“We also have evidence that Mr. Cole has been concealing a child.”
The courtroom murmured.
Nathan stood.
“Which child?”
The attorney looked at him.
“Alexander Cole.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“He is my son.”
The courtroom exploded.
The judge struck the gavel.
“Order!”
The attorney smiled.
“Then perhaps Mr. Cole can explain why his son was kept hidden.”
Nathan looked at Victoria.
Then at Richard.
Then at the judge.
“Because my family stole him.”
THE FIRST WITNESS
Richard called his first witness.
A former household employee.
She testified that Grace had been unstable.
That Grace had threatened to take Lily away.
That Grace had repeatedly demanded money.
That she had once threatened Nathan.
The courtroom listened.
Nathan's attorney whispered:
“She's lying.”
Nathan nodded.
He knew.
But knowing wasn't enough.
Evidence mattered.
The witness continued.
“Grace was obsessed with the Cole fortune.”
Nathan clenched his fists.
Then his attorney stood.
“Do you recognize this?”
He showed her a document.
The woman stared.
“What is that?”
“Your bank statement.”
Her face changed.
“You received monthly payments from the Cole Foundation.”
“I don't remember.”
“You received them for five years.”
Silence.
“And every payment increased immediately after you gave testimony against Grace.”
The courtroom murmured.
The witness began sweating.
Nathan's attorney continued.
“Who paid you?”
“I don't know.”
“You don't know?”
“No.”
“Then perhaps the court should examine the account holder.”
He turned toward the judge.
“We request a forensic review.”
The judge nodded.
“Granted.”
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, his confidence weakened.
THE SECOND WITNESS
The next witness was a former accountant.
He claimed Nathan had personally approved the transfer of millions from the company.
Nathan almost laughed.
The accountant presented documents.
Signatures.
Bank approvals.
Everything appeared legitimate.
Until Daniel stood.
“Your Honor, may I approach?”
The judge nodded.
Daniel handed him a report.
“These signatures were digitally generated.”
The accountant's face went pale.
Daniel continued.
“The actual transaction records show the funds were authorized from an encrypted terminal located in Richard Cole's private office.”
Richard's attorney objected.
“Speculation.”
Daniel produced the server logs.
“Not speculation.”
The judge examined them.
The courtroom became silent.
Richard leaned toward his lawyer.
“What happened?”
The lawyer whispered:
“They found the server.”
Richard's expression darkened.
Nathan watched him.
For the first time, he saw fear.
THE WOMAN WHO BROKE
Victoria was called next.
She walked to the witness stand slowly.
Nathan watched her.
She raised her right hand.
“I swear to tell the truth.”
The attorney approached.
“Ms. Robles, did you know about Lily?”
“Yes.”
“Before Nathan?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Grace was hiding her?”
“Yes.”
“Did you help conceal that information?”
Victoria looked at Nathan.
“Yes.”
The courtroom erupted.
The attorney smiled.
“Why?”
Victoria's voice trembled.
“My father ordered me to.”
“Your father?”
“Alejandro Robles.”
“Why?”
“Because he was working with Edward Cole.”
Richard shifted in his seat.
The attorney continued.
“Did you know about Alexander?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know he was Nathan's biological son?”
“I eventually learned.”
“And did you know Edward had taken him?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell Nathan?”
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
“Because my father threatened to kill him.”
Silence.
The judge leaned forward.
“Explain.”
Victoria took a breath.
“My father controlled the genetic program.”
She looked at Nathan.
“He believed Alexander was the perfect heir.”
“Why?”
“Because he carried the genetic combination they had been searching for.”
The courtroom went silent.
Victoria continued.
“They wanted to use him to control the family trust.”
The attorney asked:
“And the other children?”
“Lily was Nathan's biological daughter.”
“And Adrian?”
“Adrian carried Michael Reed's genetic line.”
“Who was Michael Reed?”
Victoria looked at Richard.
“A man Edward had erased.”
Richard suddenly stood.
“This is absurd.”
The judge struck the gavel.
“Sit down.”
Richard slowly obeyed.
Victoria's voice became stronger.
“Edward didn't build an empire.”
She looked around the courtroom.
“He built a system.”
THE SECRET FILE
Nathan's attorney presented the sealed envelope.
The judge examined it.
“This document appears to have been concealed for years.”
“Yes.”
“Who provided it?”
“Nathan Cole's deceased father.”
Richard's attorney objected.
“Your Honor, the authenticity is questionable.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“We have handwriting verification.”
The judge examined the report.
“Accepted.”
Nathan's attorney opened the letter.
He read the crucial passage.
If Nathan ever discovers the truth, the family trust must be frozen.
The children must remain separated.
The person who controls Alexander controls the future of the empire.
The courtroom fell silent.
The judge looked toward Richard.
“Mr. Cole, why does this document name you as trustee?”
Richard's face tightened.
“Because Edward trusted me.”
Nathan's attorney responded:
“Or because Edward knew you would continue his plan.”
Richard slammed his hand onto the table.
“This is ridiculous!”
The judge warned him.
“One more outburst and I will hold you in contempt.”
Richard sat.
Nathan stared at him.
He knew the man was losing control.
But then Richard smiled.
A strange, confident smile.
Nathan immediately became suspicious.
THE FINAL WITNESS
The courtroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman entered.
Older.
Pale.
Walking slowly.
Nathan stood.
His breath disappeared.
“Mom?”
His mother walked toward the witness stand.
The courtroom erupted.
Richard's face went completely white.
Nathan's mother looked directly at him.
Then at Richard.
Then at the judge.
“I am here to tell you what happened five years ago.”
Nathan couldn't move.
She began.
“Five years ago, Grace discovered Edward's plan.”
The judge listened.
“He intended to take Lily.”
“He believed the child carried genetic material essential to his research.”
Grace fought him.
“I helped her escape.”
Richard looked furious.
Nathan's mother continued.
“We took Lily.”
“We tried to take Adrian too.”
“But Richard intercepted us.”
Nathan's fists tightened.
“What happened?”
His mother looked at Richard.
“He shot at our vehicle.”
The courtroom gasped.
“He thought he had killed us.”
“But we survived.”
Nathan's voice cracked.
“And Grace?”
“She escaped with Lily.”
“What about Adrian?”
His mother lowered her eyes.
“Richard took him.”
Nathan looked at Richard.
Richard said nothing.
“And Alexander?”
His mother began crying.
“Edward had already taken him.”
The judge asked:
“Where was Mr. Cole's father?”
She answered:
“Alive.”
The courtroom went silent.
“He was the man controlling everything from behind the scenes.”
Nathan's heart hammered.
“Where is he now?”
His mother looked directly at Nathan.
“I don't know.”
Then she added:
“But I know where he plans to go.”
Nathan leaned forward.
“Where?”
She whispered:
“The old family estate.”
THE VERDICT
The judge recessed for thirty minutes.
When the court returned, the atmosphere had changed.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The judge ruled that the emergency removal of Nathan's control was suspended.
Richard's authority over the trust was frozen pending a full investigation.
The financial accounts were ordered preserved.
And most importantly—
the children were declared protected witnesses.
Richard stared ahead.
Nathan turned toward him.
“This is over.”
Richard slowly smiled.
“No.”
Nathan frowned.
“You think this is over?”
Richard leaned closer.
“You still haven't found Edward.”
Nathan said nothing.
Richard whispered:
“And you don't know what he has planned for Grace.”
Nathan's face hardened.
Richard continued:
“Your father didn't create this system to steal your money.”
He paused.
“He created it to control your children.”
Nathan stared.
Richard smiled.
“And now you have put all of them in the same place.”
Nathan's blood ran cold.
“What?”
Richard stood.
“The old estate.”
Nathan realized immediately.
His mother had told the court where Edward planned to go.
But she hadn't known one crucial fact.
Edward had wanted them there.
He had wanted Nathan to bring everyone together.
Richard walked away.
Nathan's phone vibrated.
One message.
A photograph.
Grace.
Lily.
Adrian.
Alexander.
All standing together.
And behind them—
an elderly man.
Edward.
The message contained only one sentence:
COME HOME, SON.
Nathan's blood froze.
He immediately called Daniel.
“Get everyone to the estate.”
Daniel answered:
“We're already on our way.”
“Don't enter.”
“Why?”
Nathan stared at the photograph.
“Because my father wants us there.”
He hung up.
Victoria approached.
“What happened?”
Nathan showed her the image.
Victoria's face went white.
“That's Edward.”
“Yes.”
“He's alive.”
Nathan nodded.
“And he has all four children.”
Victoria covered her mouth.
Then another message appeared.
This time, from Edward.
YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT.
Below it was a second sentence.
BRING THE SEALED ENVELOPE.
Nathan stared at the screen.
Then he noticed something in the photograph.
A small clock on the wall behind Grace.
It read:
11:17.
Nathan looked at his watch.
10:43 p.m.
He had thirty-four minutes.
He turned toward the courthouse doors.
“It's time.”
Victoria followed.
“Where are you going?”
Nathan looked back.
“To end the Cole family trial.”
He paused.
“Not in court.”
His eyes hardened.
“At home.”
Outside, sirens began screaming in the distance.
And as Nathan's car disappeared into the night, another car quietly left the courthouse.
Richard was inside.
And on the seat beside him was a second sealed envelope.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Edward.
On the back were five handwritten words:
THE BOY MUST NEVER KNOW.
Richard looked at the photograph.
Then smiled.
May you like
Because the trial had never been about proving who was guilty.
It had been about determining who would survive the truth.
