CHAPTER 13 — THE PRICE OF BEING A FATHER

CHAPTER 13 — THE PRICE OF BEING A FATHER
The old Cole estate had been abandoned for nearly six years.
At least, that was what Nathan had believed.
From the road, the mansion looked exactly as he remembered it.
Dark windows.
Dead gardens.
Iron gates covered in rust.
The stone fountain in the center of the driveway had stopped working years ago.
But tonight, every window on the third floor was illuminated.
Nathan stared at the house from the driver's seat.
His hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“That's impossible.”
Daniel looked at the mansion through the windshield.
“You're sure nobody has used this place?”
“Nobody was supposed to.”
Victoria sat silently in the back.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Nathan's phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
COME INSIDE.
Another message followed.
ALONE.
Nathan looked at Daniel.
“You stay here.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Absolutely not.”
“If something happens to me, you get the children out.”
“And if something happens to you?”
Nathan looked toward the mansion.
“Then you finish what I started.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You're not going in there alone.”
Nathan opened the car door.
“I have to.”
Victoria suddenly grabbed his arm.
“Wait.”
Nathan turned.
“What?”
She looked terrified.
“My father used to tell me something about this house.”
“What?”
“He said your grandfather built a room underneath it.”
Nathan frowned.
“A basement?”
“No.”
Victoria shook her head.
“Something deeper.”
She swallowed.
“He called it the blood room.”
Nathan's expression changed.
“What does that mean?”
“I don't know.”
“Victoria.”
She looked into his eyes.
“But I remember one thing.”
“What?”
“He said nobody enters that room unless the Cole bloodline is ready to choose its heir.”
Nathan stared at her.
Then he closed the door.
THE HOUSE OF SECRETS
The front door opened before Nathan touched it.
He stopped.
A cold breeze moved through the hallway.
“Dad?”
His voice echoed.
No answer.
Nathan stepped inside.
The furniture was covered in white sheets.
Dust covered the floor.
Yet there were fresh footprints.
Small ones.
Children's footprints.
Nathan's heart tightened.
“Lily.”
He followed them.
One footprint.
Then another.
Then another.
They led toward the library.
Nathan pushed the door open.
The room was empty.
Except for a small stuffed rabbit lying on the floor.
Lily's rabbit.
Nathan picked it up.
His fingers trembled.
“She was here.”
Daniel's voice came through his earpiece.
“Nathan, I can see movement on the third floor.”
Nathan looked up.
“How many?”
“Four.”
Nathan froze.
“Children?”
“I can't tell.”
Then another voice came through the speaker.
A man's voice.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Welcome home, Nathan.”
Nathan's blood ran cold.
He looked toward the ceiling.
“Edward.”
A soft laugh echoed through the house.
“You finally learned to say my name without fear.”
Nathan clenched his fists.
“Where are my children?”
“You mean our family.”
“They're not your family.”
Edward's voice became colder.
“Everything you have came from me.”
Nathan looked around.
“No.”
He stared at the darkness.
“You gave me an empire.”
He tightened his grip around Lily's rabbit.
“But you never gave me a family.”
Silence.
Then Edward answered:
“And that is why you are unworthy of one.”
THE FOUR DOORS
A hidden panel opened behind the fireplace.
Nathan stared.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Daniel spoke through the earpiece.
“Don't go down.”
Nathan ignored him.
He descended.
One floor.
Then another.
The air became colder.
At the bottom was a long corridor.
Four doors.
Each one had a name engraved into the metal.
LILY.
ADRIAN.
ALEXANDER.
GRACE.
Nathan's heart nearly stopped.
He approached the first door.
“Lily?”
A tiny voice answered.
“Daddy?”
Nathan closed his eyes.
His daughter was alive.
He touched the door.
“I'm here.”
“Daddy, I'm scared.”
“I know.”
“Please open the door.”
Nathan tried the handle.
Locked.
He turned toward the corridor.
“Edward!”
His father's voice came through hidden speakers.
“One child at a time.”
Nathan's jaw tightened.
“Open the door.”
“You want your children?”
“Yes.”
“Then prove you deserve them.”
“How?”
“Choose.”
Nathan stared.
“Choose what?”
“Which one you save first.”
Nathan's blood ran cold.
“You expect me to choose between my children?”
Edward laughed softly.
“Every father makes choices.”
Nathan looked at Lily's door.
“No.”
“Then they all suffer.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
He could hear Lily crying.
“Daddy!”
Nathan's entire body shook.
“Open the door!”
“You have thirty seconds.”
A countdown appeared on the wall.
00:29
Nathan stared.
00:28
Then he understood.
This wasn't about choosing a child.
It was about making him accept Edward's rules.
Nathan looked at the four doors.
Then smiled.
“No.”
Edward's voice stopped.
“What?”
Nathan walked to the center of the corridor.
“I refuse to choose.”
Silence.
“I am their father.”
The countdown stopped.
Nathan continued.
“You don't get to decide what that means.”
THE PRICE
A door opened.
Not Lily's.
Grace's.
Nathan turned.
Grace stepped into the corridor.
She looked thinner.
Exhausted.
There was a bruise near her temple.
But she was alive.
Nathan stared at her.
“Grace.”
She ran toward him.
He caught her.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Nathan held her as tightly as he could.
“I thought I lost you.”
Grace shook against his chest.
“You can't stay here.”
“Where are the children?”
“Edward separated them.”
“I know.”
Grace looked at him.
“You shouldn't have come.”
Nathan pulled back.
“They're my children.”
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
Nathan gently touched her face.
“I should have found you sooner.”
“You didn't know.”
“I should have.”
“No.”
Grace shook her head.
“You were manipulated.”
Nathan looked down.
“That doesn't erase the years.”
Grace didn't answer.
Nathan whispered:
“I missed Lily's first steps.”
“I know.”
“Her first word.”
“I know.”
“Her first day of school.”
Grace's tears fell.
“I know.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“I can't get those years back.”
“No.”
“But I can give her the next twenty.”
Grace stared at him.
“That is what being her father means.”
THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO FORGIVE HIM
Grace stepped away.
“You think loving them now fixes everything?”
Nathan looked at her.
“No.”
“Because it doesn't.”
“I know.”
“You didn't know she existed.”
“I know.”
“You didn't know she was sick when she was two.”
Nathan's face changed.
“She was sick?”
Grace nodded.
“She had pneumonia.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“I was in New York.”
“You were building another hotel.”
Nathan absorbed the words.
“I know you didn't know.”
Grace's voice cracked.
“But she asked for her father.”
Nathan looked at her.
“What did you tell her?”
“That you were busy.”
Nathan winced.
“Why?”
“Because she needed to believe you would come.”
He looked away.
“I didn't.”
“You couldn't.”
“But she doesn't know that.”
Grace stared at him.
“She knows now.”
Nathan looked back.
“What?”
“I told her.”
“Why?”
“Because she deserves the truth.”
Nathan nodded slowly.
“She does.”
Grace stepped closer.
“Being her father isn't just signing papers.”
“I know.”
“It's not buying her a house.”
“I know.”
“It's not protecting her with lawyers.”
“I know.”
Grace's voice trembled.
“It's being there.”
Nathan swallowed.
“I will be.”
“You can't promise that.”
“Why?”
“Because your family destroys everything it touches.”
Nathan looked at her.
“I'll destroy it first.”
Grace froze.
“What?”
“The empire.”
Nathan took out his phone.
“I've already told my lawyers to prepare the documents.”
Grace stared.
“What documents?”
“Everything.”
He looked toward the ceiling.
“Every company.”
“Every property.”
“Every offshore account.”
“Every trust.”
“I'll put it all into a protected structure for the children.”
Grace shook her head.
“Nathan, you can't just give away everything.”
“Yes, I can.”
“Your father will win.”
Nathan smiled sadly.
“My father already lost.”
THE FATHER'S CHOICE
Edward's voice suddenly filled the corridor.
“You sentimental fool.”
Nathan looked up.
“Come out.”
“You think money is meaningless?”
“To me?”
“Yes.”
Edward laughed.
“You were born for this empire.”
“No.”
“You were trained to inherit it.”
“No.”
“You were raised to become the most powerful man in this country.”
Nathan's eyes hardened.
“And I became someone who wants his daughter to sleep without fear.”
Silence.
Edward's voice became quiet.
“Then you have chosen.”
Nathan frowned.
“What?”
“The empire.”
Nathan looked at Grace.
“No.”
Edward answered:
“Exactly.”
A hidden screen appeared.
Nathan watched in horror.
Images of the Cole Group flashed across it.
Bank accounts.
Properties.
Contracts.
Patents.
Everything.
Then a single button appeared.
TRANSFER OWNERSHIP.
Edward spoke.
“Press it.”
Nathan stared.
“What happens?”
“You lose everything.”
Nathan smiled.
“Good.”
Grace grabbed his arm.
“Nathan—”
He looked at her.
“I told you.”
He pressed the button.
THE EMPIRE FALLS
Everywhere in the world, computers activated.
Banks received instructions.
Stock exchanges received filings.
Corporate boards received legal documents.
Nathan Cole had voluntarily transferred controlling ownership of the Cole Group into a protected family trust.
But there was a condition.
Neither Nathan nor any member of the older generation could control it.
The beneficiaries were:
Lily Bennett Cole.
Adrian Reed.
Alexander Cole.
And any future descendants.
The trustees were independent.
Nathan had given away his empire.
Completely.
Edward's voice disappeared.
For several seconds, the underground corridor was silent.
Then the lights went out.
Grace grabbed Nathan's hand.
“What happened?”
Nathan whispered:
“He can't control it anymore.”
A door opened.
Lily ran out.
“Daddy!”
Nathan dropped to his knees.
She threw herself into his arms.
He held her.
“I've got you.”
She buried her face against his chest.
“I knew you'd come.”
Nathan's eyes filled with tears.
“You waited for me?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Lily held up four tiny fingers.
“Four sleeps.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
Four sleeps.
For her, four nights had been an eternity.
For him, five years had been stolen.
He kissed her forehead.
“I'll never leave you again.”
Grace watched silently.
Then Adrian appeared.
Nathan opened one arm.
The boy hesitated.
Nathan didn't force him.
He simply held out his hand.
Adrian slowly took it.
Then Alexander emerged.
The boy stared at Nathan.
“Are you really my father?”
Nathan crouched.
“Yes.”
Alexander studied him.
“Grandfather said you didn't want me.”
Nathan's heart broke.
“He lied.”
“Why?”
“Because he wanted you to hate me.”
“Why?”
“So you would belong to him.”
Alexander looked at him.
“Do I belong to you?”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
The boy frowned.
Nathan smiled.
“You belong to yourself.”
Alexander's eyes filled with tears.
Then he stepped forward.
Nathan opened his arms.
The boy hugged him.
Nathan held all three children close.
For the first time in his life, he understood what wealth could never purchase.
This.
THE MAN BEHIND THE GLASS
But someone was watching.
High above the underground corridor, behind one-way glass, Edward stood alone.
He watched Nathan embrace the children.
And smiled.
Richard entered the room.
“You let him win.”
Edward shook his head.
“No.”
“He gave away the empire.”
“Exactly.”
Richard frowned.
“I don't understand.”
Edward turned.
“The empire was never the prize.”
“Then what was?”
Edward smiled.
“Nathan.”
Richard stared.
Edward continued:
“Now he has no company.”
“No money.”
“No political protection.”
“No board.”
“No army of lawyers.”
“Only his children.”
Richard's face changed.
“You planned this.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Edward's eyes became cold.
“Because a father without power is easy to destroy.”
THE LAST BETRAYAL
Nathan led Grace and the children upstairs.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
Then the front doors opened.
Police entered.
Nathan froze.
Behind them stood Richard.
And Alejandro Robles.
Victoria screamed.
“Dad!”
Alejandro looked at her without emotion.
“You disappointed me.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“You took my child.”
Alejandro ignored her.
He looked at Nathan.
“You gave away the empire.”
Nathan stared.
“Yes.”
Alejandro smiled.
“Then you have nothing left.”
Nathan looked at Grace.
Then the children.
“No.”
Alejandro's smile disappeared.
Nathan stepped forward.
“I have everything.”
Then the police officer approached.
“Mr. Cole?”
“Yes?”
“You're under arrest.”
Grace gasped.
“For what?”
The officer handed Nathan a warrant.
Nathan read it.
Fraud.
Embezzlement.
Kidnapping.
Financial crimes.
And one charge that made his blood run cold:
Conspiracy to abduct a minor.
Nathan looked at Richard.
“You forged this.”
Richard smiled.
“No.”
He pointed toward Victoria.
“She did.”
Victoria's face went white.
“What?”
Richard looked at the police.
“The evidence is in her office.”
Victoria shook her head.
“No.”
Nathan stared at her.
“Victoria…”
“I didn't do this.”
Alejandro stepped closer.
“You signed the documents.”
“I was forced.”
“No one will believe you.”
Victoria began crying.
Nathan looked at the children.
Then at Grace.
Then at the police.
For the first time, he understood the true price of being a father.
It wasn't money.
It wasn't power.
It wasn't even sacrifice.
It was standing between his children and the people who wanted to destroy them—even when standing there meant losing everything.
Nathan raised his hands.
“I'll cooperate.”
Grace stared.
“No!”
Nathan looked at her.
“Get the children out.”
“But—”
“Grace.”
He smiled.
“For once, let me be the one who protects you.”
The police handcuffed him.
Lily began crying.
“Daddy!”
Nathan turned.
“I love you.”
“Daddy!”
“I'll come back.”
She reached for him.
Grace pulled her close.
Nathan was led away.
But just before he crossed the doorway, his phone vibrated.
A message.
From an unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Edward.
Standing beside someone Nathan had never expected to see.
His mother.
Alive.
And beneath the photograph were seven words:
THE REAL TRIAL HASN'T EVEN BEGUN YET.
Nathan stared at the screen.
Then slowly smiled.
Because now he knew.
His father's greatest mistake had been believing Nathan would surrender once he lost his empire.
He hadn't understood the truth.
Nathan had never needed the empire.
He needed a reason to fight.
And now he had three children, a woman he still loved, and a family secret worth destroying the entire Cole dynasty to expose.
As the police car disappeared into the night, Grace stood at the mansion gates holding Lily's hand.
She watched the taillights vanish.
Then Lily looked up.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Daddy is coming back, right?”
Grace looked toward the darkness.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
She squeezed her daughter's hand.
“He's coming back.”
But neither of them knew that Nathan's arrest was only the beginning.
Because somewhere beneath the city, Edward opened an old file.
Inside was one final document.
A birth certificate.
A name had been blacked out.
Edward slowly removed the cover.
And smiled.
Because the fourth child was not the final secret.
May you like
There was a fifth heir.
And that child was already inside the Cole family.
