CHAPTER 11 — The Woman Behind the Lie

CHAPTER 11 — The Woman Behind the Lie

The mansion plunged into darkness.

For a single heartbeat...

No one moved.

Then the emergency generators roared to life.

Red security lights flooded the hallways, casting long shadows across the walls.

The calm atmosphere inside Arthur Carter's study vanished.

Outside...

The estate alarms screamed without stopping.

"Protect Sophie!"

Ethan's voice cut through the darkness.

Two security officers immediately surrounded the little girl.

Rosa pulled Sophie into her arms.

"What’s happening, Mommy?"

Sophie whispered.

Rosa forced herself to smile despite the fear in her eyes.

"Nothing's going to happen."

"I'm right here."

Victoria picked up the secure phone.

"Control Room."

A panicked voice answered.

"Ma'am, we've got multiple intruders."

"How many?"

"Thermal imaging shows at least sixteen."

"They came through the eastern woods."

"They knew exactly where the blind spots were."

Victoria's expression hardened.

"That means someone gave them the security layout."

Arthur looked toward Ethan.

"This wasn't random."

Ethan nodded.

"They're here for evidence."

He glanced at Sophie.

"Or for the one person who proves everything."

Within minutes, the tactical response team secured the first floor.

The sound of boots echoed through the marble corridors.

Then—

Three sharp gunshots.

Not inside the house.

Outside.

Followed by another burst of shouting.

The head of security spoke into his radio.

"Suspects retreating."

"Negative."

"They're changing direction."

"They're heading for the archive wing."

Sophia looked up from her laptop.

"The servers."

"They're trying to destroy the backups."

Ethan didn't hesitate.

"Take me there."

Victoria stepped in front of him.

"No."

"That's exactly what they want."

"They'll expect you."

Ethan looked at her.

"They're already inside my home."

"I'm done hiding."

Meanwhile...

Thirty miles away...

Olivia Grant sat alone in a luxury penthouse overlooking the city.

Every television station carried the same story.

CARTER FAMILY UNDER ATTACK AFTER WEDDING SCANDAL.

She muted the television.

Her phone vibrated.

One message.

Mission failed.

Nothing more.

She slowly deleted it.

Then walked toward a hidden safe behind a painting.

Inside...

There were passports.

Cash.

Jewelry.

And a small velvet box.

She opened it.

Inside rested a simple silver necklace.

Attached to it was an old key.

The only object she had never thrown away.

A knock sounded at her door.

She froze.

No one knew she was there.

Another knock.

Slower this time.

"Olivia."

The voice belonged to a woman.

"You've been running long enough."

Olivia's face turned pale.

She unlocked the door.

Standing outside...

Was Eleanor Ashbourne.

"You..."

Olivia whispered.

"I thought you were dead."

Eleanor smiled faintly.

"So did the people who hired you."

Olivia stepped backward.

"How did you find me?"

"I wasn't looking for you."

Eleanor answered calmly.

"I was looking for the truth."

She glanced at the silver key.

"I see you still have it."

Olivia instinctively hid the necklace behind her back.

"You don't understand."

"No."

Eleanor interrupted.

"I understand far better than you think."

Back at Carter Manor...

The tactical team captured one of the intruders alive.

He was dragged into the security office.

His face was hidden beneath a black mask.

Ethan removed it himself.

The room fell silent.

Victoria stared.

"I know him."

The prisoner lowered his head.

Former Carter Security officer.

Daniel Cross.

A man who had resigned the same week Rosa disappeared three years earlier.

Ethan folded his arms.

"Why are you here?"

Daniel remained silent.

"You won't leave this room until you answer."

Still nothing.

Then...

Sophie quietly walked into the room despite Rosa's attempts to stop her.

She looked at Daniel for a long moment.

Then asked the simplest question.

"Why are you trying to hurt my family?"

Daniel's composure shattered.

His eyes filled with tears.

"I never wanted to."

"Then why?"

Sophie asked again.

He looked away.

"Because..."

"They still have my daughter."

The room froze.

Victoria's voice dropped to a whisper.

"What did you say?"

Daniel covered his face.

"For three years..."

"They've been using my little girl to control me."

"They told me..."

"If I ever spoke..."

"I'd never see her again."

Ethan slowly knelt in front of him.

"Who?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then whispered one name.

"It wasn't Richard."

"It wasn't Olivia."

"They worked for her."

Silence.

"Who?"

Daniel lifted his trembling eyes.

"The woman..."

"...behind every lie."

Before he could say another word—

A sharp crack echoed from outside.

The reinforced window exploded inward.

A sniper's bullet crossed the room.

Daniel collapsed instantly.

The silence that followed was deafening.

The last witness had been murdered...

Seconds before revealing the mastermind's name.

Outside...

The shooter's vehicle disappeared into the darkness.

Inside...

Daniel's hand slowly opened.

Clutched in his palm...

Was a torn photograph.

Only half remained.

It showed two women standing together.

One was Olivia.

The other woman's face had been ripped away.

Across the bottom, written in faded blue ink, were four chilling words:

May you like

"She started everything."
