CHAPTER 5 — The Woman Who Stole Three Years

CHAPTER 5 — The Woman Who Stole Three Years
The ballroom emptied slowly.
Not because the guests wanted to leave.
Because no one could look away.
Hours earlier, they had arrived expecting champagne, music, and the wedding of the decade.
Instead...
They had witnessed the collapse of one of the country's most powerful engagements.
And the beginning of something far more dangerous.
A search for the truth.
Olivia Grant sat alone in the bridal suite.
The white wedding gown that had once looked flawless was now wrinkled across the floor.
One diamond earring was missing.
Her carefully styled hair had begun to fall loose around her shoulders.
She stared at her reflection.
For the first time in years...
She didn't recognize the woman looking back.
A soft knock came at the door.
Her father entered without waiting for permission.
"The lawyers are downstairs."
Olivia didn't answer.
"The board wants an explanation."
Still silence.
Her father closed the door.
"You need to tell me exactly how much Ethan knows."
She finally looked up.
"Enough."
"Enough for what?"
"For everything to fall apart."
Across the mansion...
Ethan stood inside the private security operations room.
Dozens of surveillance monitors covered one wall.
Every hallway.
Every elevator.
Every entrance to Carter Global headquarters.
The Head of Security enlarged one recording.
"This is from three years ago."
The timestamp read:
May 17 — 4:42 PM
Rosa entered the lobby carrying a small envelope.
She looked nervous.
But determined.
She spoke briefly with the receptionist.
Moments later...
Olivia appeared.
Elegant.
Calm.
Smiling.
She placed one hand gently on Rosa's shoulder.
The two women walked toward the executive elevators together.
The footage ended.
Ethan frowned.
"What happened next?"
The technician typed rapidly.
"That's the problem, sir."
He opened another file.
"There is no next."
"What do you mean?"
"Every camera covering the executive floor was disabled."
"For exactly twenty-one minutes."
Victoria folded her arms.
"Accident?"
The technician shook his head.
"No."
"The shutdown required executive authorization."
Only four people had possessed that authority three years ago.
Ethan.
His father.
The Chief Technology Officer.
And Olivia Grant.
"Recover the deleted files."
Ethan ordered.
"We've been trying all night."
"I didn't ask whether it was difficult."
His voice was steady.
"I asked you to recover them."
The technician nodded immediately.
"Yes, sir."
Meanwhile...
Rosa sat quietly in the mansion's guest library.
Sophie had fallen asleep across her lap, exhausted by a day she was too young to understand.
Victoria brought over a blanket.
"You should rest."
Rosa smiled weakly.
"I've rested for three years."
Victoria sat beside her.
"There are things Ethan doesn't know."
Rosa looked down.
"I know."
"Will you tell him?"
After a long silence...
"Yes."
"But not because I want revenge."
She gently stroked Sophie's hair.
"Because she deserves the truth."
Three years earlier...
The executive elevator doors opened.
Olivia led Rosa into a private conference room.
"Ethan will be here shortly."
Rosa smiled with relief.
"Thank you."
Olivia poured two glasses of water.
"You look nervous."
"I am."
Rosa laughed softly.
"This conversation will change both our lives."
Olivia glanced toward Rosa's hand.
It rested unconsciously over her stomach.
She understood immediately.
Pregnant.
Her smile never faded.
"What wonderful news."
Ten minutes passed.
Then twenty.
Then forty.
Rosa checked the time.
"Is something wrong?"
Olivia sighed dramatically.
"I'm so sorry."
"Ethan's flight was moved forward."
"He had to leave for London."
Rosa's face fell.
"I came all this way..."
Olivia reached into her handbag.
"I'll make sure he receives your letter."
"You promise?"
"I promise."
Rosa handed over the envelope.
Inside...
A sonogram photograph.
A handwritten letter.
And a tiny pair of knitted baby socks.
Olivia accepted them with both hands.
Then smiled warmly.
"I'll personally place them on his desk."
She never did.
That evening...
The sonogram burned inside the fireplace of Olivia's penthouse.
The letter followed.
Finally...
The tiny baby socks.
Olivia watched the flames consume them all.
"They were never meant to exist."
She whispered.
Back in the present...
Victoria listened in silence as Rosa finished the story.
"Ethan never knew."
Rosa slowly shook her head.
"I believed he chose money over us."
"So I stopped trying."
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
"Three years..."
Rosa nodded.
"Three years stolen..."
"...from all of us."
Downstairs...
Security officers hurried into the operations room.
"Sir."
"We found something."
Ethan turned immediately.
"What is it?"
The technician projected another recovered file.
A maintenance log.
Dated the same afternoon Rosa visited.
One elevator had been placed into manual control.
Authorized by:
Olivia Grant.
Destination:
Sub-Level Two.
Ethan frowned.
"There isn't a conference room on Sub-Level Two."
"No, sir."
"What is there?"
The Head of Security looked uncomfortable.
"The archive."
"And the private exit."
A cold silence settled over the room.
Victoria whispered,
"So Rosa never left through the lobby."
The officer nodded.
"No."
"Someone escorted her..."
"...out of the building where no cameras could see."
Ethan clenched his fists.
He no longer believed Olivia had simply lied.
She had planned everything.
Every deleted email.
Every intercepted phone call.
Every destroyed letter.
Every missing recording.
For three years...
She hadn't just hidden the truth.
She had erased it.
And if she had gone to such extraordinary lengths to keep Rosa away...
Then one terrifying question remained.
What was she still trying to hide?
At that exact moment...
A panicked voice echoed through the hallway.
"Mr. Carter!"
A security guard burst through the operations room doors.
"Ethan..."
"Miss Grant is gone."
The room fell silent.
"She disappeared..."
May you like
"...less than five minutes ago."
