CHAPTER 10 — The Father She Never Knew

CHAPTER 10 — The Father She Never Knew
The rain fell harder as the black limousine waited outside Carter Manor.
No one inside the security room spoke.
Every monitor displayed the same image.
An elderly woman stood alone before the gates.
She carried no weapon.
No umbrella.
Only a weathered leather envelope pressed tightly against her chest.
The head of security looked toward Ethan.
"Sir?"
Ethan never took his eyes off the screen.
"Open the gate."
The iron gates parted slowly.
The woman walked through without hesitation.
Her steps were steady despite her age.
When she reached the front entrance, Arthur Carter was already waiting.
The moment he saw her...
The color drained from his face.
"You..."
His voice cracked.
"It can't be."
The woman smiled sadly.
"It's been thirty years, Arthur."
Victoria frowned.
"You know her?"
Arthur nodded slowly.
"Her name is Eleanor Ashbourne."
"The last surviving member of the Ashbourne family."
A silence settled over the foyer.
Every person present understood the significance of that name.
The Ashbournes had helped build the Carter empire.
Then they had vanished almost overnight.
No interviews.
No public appearances.
No explanation.
Only rumors.
Eleanor stepped inside.
Her eyes searched the room until they stopped on Sophie.
The little girl was sitting on the staircase, hugging Mr. Buttons.
Eleanor's expression softened.
"So..."
"That's her."
Rosa instinctively moved closer to her daughter.
"Who are you?"
Eleanor looked at Rosa with gentle eyes.
"I'm someone who should have spoken years ago."
She handed the leather envelope to Ethan.
"I've been keeping this safe."
"For whom?"
"For your daughter."
Ethan frowned.
"What's inside?"
"The truth."
They gathered in Arthur's study.
The envelope contained photographs.
Letters.
Hospital records.
And an old cassette tape labeled in faded ink:
August 11 — Emergency Statement
Victoria carefully lifted the tape.
"What is this?"
Eleanor took a slow breath.
"The last recording Margaret Carter ever made before confronting Richard Holloway."
Arthur closed his eyes.
"I thought every copy had been destroyed."
"So did Richard."
Eleanor answered.
"But Margaret never trusted only one hiding place."
Sophia quickly connected an old tape player.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A woman's calm voice emerged.
Margaret Carter.
"If anyone is listening to this..."
"...then I failed."
Arthur lowered his head.
It had been years since he had heard his wife's voice.
The room remained perfectly still.
"I've uncovered evidence that someone inside our company has been manipulating corporate records."
"I don't yet know who."
"But I know why."
A pause.
"They're protecting a child."
Ethan looked up sharply.
The tape continued.
"And if anything happens to me..."
"...promise me that child will never pay for our mistakes."
The recording ended abruptly.
No explanation.
No names.
Only silence.
Victoria whispered,
"My mother knew."
Arthur nodded.
"Not everything."
"But enough to realize an innocent child was in danger."
Ethan looked toward Eleanor.
"You said Sophie was supposed to receive these."
"Why wait until now?"
Eleanor's eyes filled with regret.
"Because someone threatened my family."
"They told me that if I ever contacted the Carters..."
"...another child would disappear."
Rosa hugged Sophie tighter.
Ethan's jaw clenched.
"They threatened children."
"They always did."
Eleanor answered quietly.
"That's how they controlled everyone."
Sophia interrupted.
"I found something."
She projected another recovered document onto the screen.
A confidential insurance policy.
Policy Holder:
Margaret Carter
Beneficiary:
Blank.
No name.
Only one sentence typed beneath.
To be completed after the child's father is identified.
Victoria frowned.
"What child?"
Arthur slowly sat down.
His hands trembled.
"I never knew."
Ethan looked at him.
"Knew what?"
Arthur swallowed hard.
"Margaret believed there was another child connected to this conspiracy."
Silence.
"A child whose identity was deliberately erased."
Everyone turned toward Eleanor.
She closed her eyes.
"There was."
Victoria's heart pounded.
"Who?"
Eleanor looked toward Sophie.
Then back at Ethan.
"It wasn't Sophie."
The room froze.
"What are you saying?"
Eleanor reached into her handbag.
She removed one final photograph.
It showed a young woman standing beside Rosa in a hospital corridor.
Both were visibly pregnant.
The date stamped in the corner read:
August 1993.
"There were two mothers."
She said quietly.
"Two babies."
"Only one disappeared from the records."
Before anyone could speak...
Sophia's computer emitted a loud alert.
ACCESS DETECTED
Someone was remotely trying to erase the recovered files.
Again.
The screen flashed red.
"Firewall breached."
Sophia's fingers flew across the keyboard.
"They're inside our system."
Victoria looked toward Ethan.
"They know what we've found."
The power flickered once.
Twice.
Then the entire mansion went dark.
Outside...
Security alarms screamed across the estate.
The night-vision cameras activated automatically.
Dozens of masked figures had appeared beyond the tree line.
They weren't there to steal money.
They weren't there to kidnap Ethan.
They were moving toward only one place.
The study where Sophie sat.
Because somewhere beyond the darkness...
May you like
Someone had decided the little girl had lived long enough.
