CHAPTER 8 — The Secret Hidden in August

CHAPTER 8 — The Secret Hidden in August

The vote was unanimous.

Richard Holloway lowered his eyes as the final voting card was placed on the polished boardroom table.

Twelve votes.

Twelve directors.

Not a single hand rose in his defense.

Arthur Carter stood slowly.

"Richard Holloway..."

"By the authority granted to this Board of Directors..."

"...you are removed as Chairman of Carter Global."

The words echoed through the silent room.

For the first time in nearly twenty-five years...

Richard Holloway no longer controlled the company he had once believed belonged to him.

Two corporate security officers stepped forward.

"Sir..."

"We'll escort you from the building."

Richard didn't move.

Instead...

He looked directly at Ethan.

"You think you've won."

Ethan remained calm.

"I've only just started asking questions."

Richard smiled.

"A question without the right answer..."

"...can destroy a family."

Then he walked away.

Victoria watched the elevator doors close behind him.

"He's hiding something."

Arthur nodded.

"He always has."

Ethan frowned.

"What aren't you telling us?"

Arthur remained silent for several seconds.

Finally...

He walked toward the panoramic window overlooking the city.

"I hoped this day would never come."

Victoria exchanged a glance with Ethan.

Neither of them had ever heard their father sound so tired.

"It began..."

Arthur said quietly,

"...three years ago."

"The same week Rosa disappeared."

Ethan's chest tightened.

"You knew?"

Arthur turned.

"I knew someone inside Carter Global had betrayed us."

"But I didn't know who."

"I ordered an internal investigation."

"What happened?"

Arthur's expression darkened.

"Every lead vanished."

"Witnesses resigned."

"Records disappeared."

"People who asked too many questions suddenly accepted jobs overseas."

Victoria whispered,

"Someone was cleaning up."

Arthur nodded.

"Someone with enormous influence."

Sophia entered carrying an old leather archive box.

"We found this in your father's private vault."

Arthur looked surprised.

"I forgot that even existed."

Ethan opened the box.

Inside were handwritten journals.

Photographs.

Business ledgers.

A faded calendar.

Everything had been carefully preserved.

One page immediately caught Victoria's attention.

The month was circled in red.

August

Not just one day.

The entire month.

Every page contained handwritten notes.

Meetings.

Phone calls.

Names.

Payments.

Arthur slowly took the journal.

"I remember now."

"What is it?"

Victoria asked.

He ran one finger across the page.

"August wasn't when this conspiracy ended."

He looked at Ethan.

"It was when it truly began."

Three years earlier...

August 8.

Arthur had received an anonymous package.

No return address.

Inside...

Only three items.

A baby photograph.

A hospital wristband.

And a note.

The message contained just one sentence.

Protect the child before they erase her forever.

Arthur had spent weeks trying to identify the baby.

He never could.

Until now.

His hands trembled slightly as he looked toward Sophie, who was playing quietly in the estate garden through the large windows.

"The child..."

"...was her."

Ethan felt a chill run through him.

"Someone warned you?"

Arthur nodded.

"But they never revealed their identity."

Victoria frowned.

"Why keep this secret?"

Arthur looked ashamed.

"Because Richard convinced me it was part of an extortion attempt."

"He said criminals were trying to manipulate the Carter family."

"So I locked the evidence away."

He closed the journal.

"I was wrong."

Meanwhile...

Across the city...

Richard Holloway entered a small private storage facility.

The manager greeted him nervously.

"You still have access, Mr. Holloway."

"I won't need it much longer."

He unlocked Unit 117.

Inside...

There were no expensive paintings.

No gold.

No cash.

Only dozens of sealed archive boxes.

Each labeled with dates.

May.

June.

July.

August.

Every year.

For over a decade.

Richard carefully opened the box marked:

August — Three Years Ago

Inside lay a tiny pink baby blanket.

A hospital birth certificate.

Several destroyed cellphone SIM cards.

And one photograph.

It showed Rosa sleeping in a hospital bed.

Holding newborn Sophie for the very first time.

Richard stared at the picture.

Then quietly whispered,

"I should have burned you."

Back at Carter Manor...

Sophia continued examining Arthur's journals.

"There are coded entries."

Victoria leaned closer.

"Can you read them?"

"Not all of them."

She pointed to one recurring symbol.

A small blue flower drawn beside certain dates.

"It appears twelve times."

Arthur suddenly recognized it.

"The Forget-Me-Not."

Ethan looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur's expression became grave.

"Your mother used that symbol."

Victoria blinked.

"My mother?"

Arthur nodded.

"When she believed someone inside the company couldn't be trusted..."

"She marked the date with a Forget-Me-Not."

The room fell silent.

Sophia slowly turned another page.

Every major event connected to Rosa...

Every deleted security file...

Every suspicious meeting...

Every unexplained financial transfer...

Carried the same small blue flower.

Victoria whispered,

"My mother knew."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"She suspected someone was building a conspiracy inside Carter Global..."

"...long before any of us realized it."

Ethan suddenly remembered something.

"The anonymous package."

Arthur looked up.

"It arrived in August."

"The DNA report was stolen in August."

"Sophie's birthday is in August."

Victoria's eyes widened.

"And Rosa disappeared just before August."

The pieces finally began fitting together.

August wasn't simply the month Sophie had been born.

It was the month every lie had been carefully arranged.

Every cover-up.

Every missing record.

Every stolen letter.

Every erased camera file.

Everything revolved around those thirty-one days.

Sophia's computer suddenly chimed.

"I found another encrypted file."

She clicked it open.

A hospital billing record appeared.

Patient:

Rosa Alvarez

Delivery Date:

August 12

Next of Kin:

The room froze.

The space wasn't blank.

Someone had entered a name.

Then tried to erase it.

But traces remained beneath the digital correction.

Sophia enlarged the screen.

Letter by letter...

The deleted name became visible.

Ethan Michael Carter.

Ethan stared at the monitor.

He had been listed as Sophie's father...

On the very day she was born.

Someone had known the truth from the beginning.

Someone with access to hospital records.

Someone powerful enough to alter corporate files...

And medical records.

Victoria slowly looked toward Arthur.

"This conspiracy..."

"...was never just about your company."

Arthur nodded grimly.

"No."

"It reached far beyond Carter Global."

At that same moment...

Richard Holloway removed the final document from Storage Unit 117.

It was a sealed envelope marked only with four handwritten words.

Open If Ethan Learns.

He broke the seal.

As he read the first page...

Even his face turned pale.

For the first time...

May you like

Richard Holloway looked afraid.
