CHAPTER 4 — The Billionaire Who Stopped the Wedding

CHAPTER 4 — The Billionaire Who Stopped the Wedding

No one reached for the wedding cake.

The towering white masterpiece still stood beneath crystal chandeliers, untouched.

Three hours earlier, it had been the centerpiece of the celebration.

Now...

It had become a monument to a lie.

Ethan Carter slowly walked to the center of the ballroom.

Hundreds of guests watched him.

Board members.

Foreign investors.

Political figures.

Business partners.

Friends.

Family.

Reporters invited to document what was supposed to be the wedding of the year.

Instead...

They were about to witness something entirely different.

He picked up the microphone.

The sound echoed softly through the silent hall.

"My name is Ethan Carter."

A few confused guests exchanged glances.

Everyone knew who he was.

But tonight...

He wasn't introducing himself to them.

He was reminding himself who he wanted to become.

"For the past three years..."

"I believed a woman I loved abandoned me."

He looked toward Rosa.

"I believed she disappeared without a word."

"I believed she chose another life."

His eyes shifted to Olivia.

"I believed those things because someone I trusted made sure I would."

Olivia took one desperate step forward.

"Ethan..."

"Please."

"You don't understand."

He raised one hand.

She stopped speaking.

Not because he shouted.

Because his disappointment hurt more than anger ever could.

"I've spent my entire career telling executives that trust is the most valuable asset any company possesses."

He smiled bitterly.

"Tonight..."

"I discovered I failed to follow my own advice."

The ballroom remained silent.

No phones rang.

No glasses clinked.

Even the photographers had lowered their cameras.

Some moments deserved respect.

Others demanded witnesses.

This one required both.

Ethan reached into his jacket pocket.

The platinum wedding ring rested in his palm.

For several seconds...

He simply looked at it.

Then he walked toward Olivia.

She smiled hopefully.

"You don't have to do this."

"I know."

He answered quietly.

"I'm choosing to."

He gently placed the ring in her hand.

"Our engagement ends tonight."

Her fingers trembled.

"You'll regret this."

He slowly shook his head.

"I already regret the three years I lost."

Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.

Olivia's father immediately stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter."

"Think carefully."

"Our companies have invested billions preparing this merger."

Ethan met his gaze.

"My daughter isn't a line item on a balance sheet."

"You don't throw away decades of business over one misunderstanding."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"A misunderstanding is serving the wrong wine."

"A misunderstanding is arriving late to a meeting."

He took one step closer.

"Hiding a child from her father..."

"...is not a misunderstanding."

Victoria quietly moved beside Rosa and little Sophie.

She could feel Rosa shaking.

"Are you alright?"

Rosa looked toward Ethan.

"I don't know."

"I stopped dreaming about this a long time ago."

Victoria gently squeezed her hand.

"Maybe that's why it finally happened."

Across the ballroom...

The chairman of Carter Global's board approached Ethan.

"There's something you should know."

"What is it?"

"The media is already outside."

Ethan nodded.

"They'll want a statement."

"I'll give them one."

"The stock price will react."

"I know."

"The merger agreement will collapse."

"I know."

"Shareholders will be furious."

Ethan looked toward Sophie.

She was laughing quietly as Victoria helped clean chocolate frosting from her little nose.

Then he turned back.

"None of that changes my answer."

He returned to the microphone.

"This wedding..."

"...will not continue."

No dramatic pause.

No elaborate explanation.

Just five words.

Five words that instantly erased months of planning.

Thousands of invitations.

Millions of dollars in preparation.

Years of corporate negotiations.

The orchestra quietly packed away their instruments.

Wedding staff looked at one another, uncertain whether to begin clearing the hall.

Then Ethan spoke again.

"There will be no marriage."

"There will be no merger."

"There will be no celebration built on deception."

The first applause came from the very back of the ballroom.

One elderly woman slowly stood.

Then another guest.

Then another.

Within moments...

Dozens of people were on their feet.

Not celebrating scandal.

Not mocking Olivia.

They were applauding a man who had chosen truth over convenience.

Olivia's smile finally disappeared.

She looked around the room in disbelief.

"They're applauding him?"

Her mother whispered urgently,

"We need to leave."

But before anyone could move...

The ballroom doors opened.

Not for reporters.

Not for more guests.

For Carter Global's Head of Security.

He walked directly to Ethan.

"Sir."

"We've completed the preliminary review."

Ethan nodded.

"And?"

The officer handed him a sealed tablet.

"We recovered deleted security footage."

Victoria's heart skipped.

"From three years ago?"

"Yes, ma'am."

The officer looked toward Olivia.

"It shows Miss Rosa Alvarez entering Carter Tower."

He paused.

"But..."

"It never shows her leaving."

A heavy silence fell across the ballroom.

Rosa slowly looked up.

"What?"

The officer swallowed.

"According to every available camera..."

"...you disappeared..."

"...inside our own building."

Olivia closed her eyes.

Just for a moment.

But it was enough.

Ethan saw it.

The look of someone whose worst secret had finally begun to unravel.

Whatever happened three years ago...

Had not been an accident.

May you like

And someone inside Carter Global had made sure the truth never escaped.
