CHAPTER 7 — The Boardroom War

CHAPTER 7 — The Boardroom War
The emergency board meeting began at exactly 8:00 a.m.
No reporters were allowed inside.
No assistants.
No observers.
Only twelve directors sat around the forty-foot mahogany table that had witnessed every major decision in Carter Global's history.
Today, none of them had come to discuss quarterly profits.
They had come to decide whether the company's founder's son was still fit to lead.
Ethan Carter entered the boardroom alone.
He wore a charcoal suit.
No tie.
No wedding ring.
No trace of the man who had been scheduled to marry two days earlier.
He placed a thin black folder on the table.
Then quietly took his seat.
No one spoke.
At the opposite end sat Richard Holloway.
Chairman of the Board.
For twenty years, he had helped build Carter Global into one of the most influential corporations in the country.
He smiled politely.
"Ethan."
"Thank you for coming."
Ethan returned the smile.
"I own thirty-eight percent of the company."
"I wasn't aware attendance was optional."
Several directors shifted uncomfortably.
The battle had begun.
Richard folded his hands.
"The last forty-eight hours have cost this company nearly six billion dollars in market value."
"The media is questioning our leadership."
"The merger has collapsed."
"Investors are demanding stability."
He paused.
"We need answers."
Ethan nodded once.
"So do I."
Director Melissa Grant cleared her throat.
"The board's concern is simple."
"Did your personal decisions unnecessarily damage shareholder value?"
Ethan looked directly at her.
"My personal decisions?"
She hesitated.
"The wedding."
"The public confrontation."
"The allegations."
He leaned forward.
"My fiancée concealed my biological daughter for three years."
"Would you have preferred I married her first?"
No one answered.
Richard slid a document across the table.
"The board has prepared a temporary solution."
Ethan glanced down.
The title read:
Emergency Executive Leave Agreement
He looked back up.
"You want me to step aside."
"Temporarily."
Richard smiled.
"Until public confidence returns."
"For how long?"
"As long as necessary."
Ethan laughed quietly.
Several directors looked surprised.
It was not the laugh of a defeated man.
It was the laugh of someone who had finally understood the game.
"You knew."
The room fell silent.
Richard's smile faded.
"I beg your pardon?"
"You knew Rosa came to this company three years ago."
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"You knew Olivia intercepted her."
"I did not."
"You knew someone erased security footage."
"That's absurd."
Ethan slowly opened the black folder.
"I thought you'd say that."
He removed the first document.
Visitor logs.
The second.
Deleted access records.
The third.
Security authorization reports.
Every page carried official Carter Global seals.
"I spent last night reviewing three years of archived files."
He looked around the table.
"Someone forgot that backup servers don't lie."
Victoria quietly entered the boardroom.
Behind her came Carter Global's Chief Information Officer.
Then the company's General Counsel.
Neither had been invited.
Richard frowned.
"This is a closed meeting."
Victoria smiled.
"It still is."
She placed another folder on the table.
"Our legal department has completed its preliminary review."
The General Counsel spoke carefully.
"Evidence indicates multiple corporate records were intentionally altered."
He paused.
"Executive authorization codes were used."
Richard remained calm.
"Whose?"
The attorney looked directly at him.
"Yours."
A heavy silence settled over the room.
One director slowly removed his reading glasses.
Another leaned back in disbelief.
Richard's expression barely changed.
"That's impossible."
The CIO connected a secure laptop to the boardroom display.
A timeline appeared.
Three years earlier.
Every deleted email.
Every altered visitor record.
Every disabled surveillance camera.
Each authorization carried the same executive encryption key.
Chairman R. Holloway
Richard slowly stood.
"I've been framed."
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
"You've been caught."
Melissa Grant stared at Richard.
"You approved this?"
He looked around desperately.
"I never saw those requests."
"They were processed automatically."
"The system must have been compromised."
The CIO answered immediately.
"It wasn't."
"Our forensic audit confirms every authorization required biometric verification."
Richard's face finally lost its color.
Ethan walked slowly around the boardroom table.
"For three years..."
"I believed I lost the woman I loved."
He stopped behind Richard's chair.
"My daughter grew up without her father."
He looked at every director.
"And all the while..."
"The chairman of this company protected the person responsible."
Richard's voice hardened.
"Be careful, Ethan."
"You still answer to this board."
Ethan smiled faintly.
"No."
He pressed a button on the conference remote.
The screen changed.
Instead of financial records...
The company's shareholder registry appeared.
Updated that very morning.
Victoria folded her arms.
"Read the first line."
Richard did.
His expression froze.
Carter Family Holdings — 51.2% Voting Control
Impossible.
Richard looked up.
"You only owned thirty-eight percent."
"I did."
Ethan replied calmly.
"Until midnight."
Every director stared in disbelief.
Victoria smiled.
"Our father exercised the family's dormant voting trust."
"The shares never disappeared."
"They were simply never activated."
Richard whispered,
"Arthur Carter..."
The boardroom doors opened.
An elderly man walked inside, supported only by a polished wooden cane.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
His posture remained straight despite his age.
Every director immediately stood.
Arthur Carter.
Founder of Carter Global.
The man the public believed had retired years earlier.
He slowly surveyed the room.
Then looked directly at Richard.
"I left this company in your hands."
His voice was quiet.
"I never gave you permission to steal my grandson's family."
Richard's hands began to tremble.
Arthur turned to Ethan.
"Son..."
"It's time."
Ethan nodded.
Without another word...
He placed a single resolution before the board.
Motion to Remove Richard Holloway as Chairman and Director of Carter Global.
Arthur picked up the voting card in front of him.
"So do I."
One by one...
Other directors reached for theirs.
Richard looked around the room.
The allies who had protected him for years would now decide whether to save themselves...
May you like
Or go down with him.
