CHAPTER 12 — The Father on the Birth Certificate

CHAPTER 12 — The Father on the Birth Certificate

The baby's cry came again.

Soft.

Weak.

Impossible.

Maya stood completely still.

Emma stirred against her chest.

Luka slowly raised his weapon.

Ethan's face had gone white.

Even Elena looked terrified.

Maya whispered, "There is another child here."

Ethan didn't answer.

"Dad?"

Nothing.

Maya turned toward him.

"Who is crying?"

Ethan looked at the floor.

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I don't know where they kept him."

"Who is him?"

Ethan swallowed.

"The third carrier."

Maya's heart pounded.

"Take me there."

"You don't understand."

"I understand enough."

She stepped forward.

"My daughter was hunted before she was born. My brother was taken from my family. My father disappeared protecting us."

Her voice hardened.

"I'm done being told what I don't understand."

Luka nodded.

"She's right."

Ethan looked at him.

"You have no idea what you're asking."

Luka answered quietly.

"We've been asking questions for twenty-five years."

"Then you're finally going to get answers."

Ethan led them through a narrow corridor beneath the laboratory.

The walls became older.

The modern steel disappeared.

Stone replaced concrete.

Old family symbols were carved into the walls.

Maya recognized the Bennett crest.

Then the Moretti crest.

Then a third symbol she had never seen.

A circle divided into three sections.

"What is that?"

Ethan stopped.

"The original M-17 symbol."

"Why three sections?"

"Because there were always three bloodlines."

Maya stared.

"Mine."

"The Morettis."

"And?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Luka looked at the symbol.

"Vale."

Ethan nodded.

"Adrian Vale's family."

Maya frowned.

"Then why was he hunting us?"

"Because his bloodline was removed from the succession."

"By whom?"

"Your grandfather."

Maya stared.

"Why?"

"Because Vale's family wanted complete control."

"And my grandfather refused."

"Yes."

"So M-17 was created to prevent one family from owning everything."

"Exactly."

Maya looked at Emma.

"And now?"

"Now the three bloodlines have been reunited."

"Me."

"Luka."

"And Emma."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

Maya looked at him.

"Then who?"

"Emma carries your sequence."

"Luka carries the Moretti sequence."

"And the third?"

Ethan pointed toward the darkness.

"Someone carries Vale's."

They reached a steel door.

No handle.

No keypad.

Only a small biometric scanner.

Ethan placed his palm against it.

Nothing happened.

Luka tried.

Nothing.

Maya stepped forward.

The door unlocked instantly.

Everyone froze.

Maya looked at her hand.

"I didn't do anything."

Ethan whispered:

"You are the master carrier."

The door opened.

Inside was a small room.

A crib stood in the center.

An infant slept inside.

Maya stopped breathing.

The baby had dark hair.

Pale skin.

And a tiny crescent-shaped mark on his wrist.

The same mark as Luka.

Maya slowly approached.

"Who is he?"

Ethan couldn't speak.

Luka stepped closer.

He stared at the baby.

Then at Maya.

"This is impossible."

Maya looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because that mark..."

He pointed.

"It's identical to mine."

Maya picked up the baby's blanket.

A name had been embroidered into it.

NOAH.

Her mother's voice broke.

"Noah."

Maya turned.

"You know him."

Elena nodded.

"He's your brother."

Maya froze.

"My brother?"

"Your other brother."

Luka stared at the baby.

"I thought I was the only one."

"You were supposed to be."

Maya's voice trembled.

"How many children did my parents have?"

Elena whispered:

"Three."

Maya looked at Ethan.

"And you hid all of them."

"I tried to save all of you."

"No."

Maya shook her head.

"You made choices."

Ethan looked down.

"Yes."

Luka carefully lifted Noah from the crib.

The baby immediately stopped crying.

He looked at Luka.

Then smiled.

Luka's face softened.

Maya had never seen him look like that.

"You know him."

Luka whispered:

"I've dreamed about him."

"What?"

"Since I was a child."

Maya stared.

"How?"

"I don't know."

Ethan answered.

"Because the brothers were separated after birth."

"Your memories were suppressed."

Luka looked at him.

"You did that?"

"Not me."

"Who?"

"Vale."

Luka's expression hardened.

"He erased my memories."

"Only some."

"Why?"

"Because he was trying to determine which child carried the strongest sequence."

Maya looked at Noah.

"And he never found out."

"Because your father moved Noah."

"Where?"

"Here."

Maya stared.

"For twenty-five years?"

"No."

Ethan shook his head.

"He was born six months ago."

Maya's heart stopped.

"Six months?"

"Yes."

She looked at the baby.

"Then who is his mother?"

Silence.

Maya slowly turned toward Elena.

Her mother began crying.

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"No."

"How can a baby appear in this facility without a mother?"

Ethan looked away.

Maya understood.

"No."

She stepped backward.

"Dad."

Ethan said nothing.

"Where did Noah come from?"

"He was created."

Maya's face went cold.

"Created?"

"A surrogate pregnancy."

"Whose DNA?"

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Yours."

Maya stopped breathing.

"What?"

"His genetic material came from your preserved cells."

She looked at Noah.

"He's my son?"

"Biologically, yes."

Luka stared.

"Then he's my nephew."

Ethan nodded.

Maya's hands shook.

"But why?"

"Because Vale wanted to reproduce M-17."

"And he used me."

"Yes."

"Without my consent."

"Yes."

Maya looked at the baby.

Noah reached toward her.

She took him.

He immediately curled his tiny fingers around hers.

Something inside her broke.

"He doesn't deserve any of this."

"No."

"He is just a baby."

"Yes."

Maya kissed his forehead.

"Then nobody is taking him."

A metallic sound came from the corridor.

Luka immediately turned.

"We have company."

The lights went out.

Gunfire erupted.

Ethan pushed Maya behind the wall.

"Stay down!"

Bullets struck the steel door.

Luka returned fire.

The attackers shouted.

"Secure the children!"

Maya held Emma and Noah against her chest.

"They're here for the babies."

Ethan looked at her.

"Yes."

"How did they find us?"

His expression changed.

"Someone activated the succession."

Maya stared.

"Who?"

A voice came through the speakers.

"Me."

Adrian Vale.

Maya's blood froze.

His voice was calm.

Almost amused.

"You've finally gathered everyone in one place."

Luka shouted:

"Show yourself!"

"You already know me."

"Come down here."

"I don't need to."

Maya stepped toward the speaker.

"What do you want?"

"Your children."

"No."

"Then your brother."

"No."

"Then perhaps your mother."

Maya's face hardened.

"You aren't taking anyone."

Vale laughed.

"You still don't understand."

"Understand what?"

"You were never supposed to survive."

Maya tightened her arms around Emma and Noah.

"Then why am I alive?"

"Because your father made a mistake."

Ethan looked up.

Vale continued.

"He loved you."

Maya looked at Ethan.

"That was his weakness."

Ethan's eyes filled with anger.

"Leave them alone."

"Still pretending to be noble?"

"I know what you did."

"You know nothing."

"You killed my father."

Vale laughed.

"No."

"I killed the man who created M-17."

Ethan froze.

Maya stared.

"Grandfather?"

Vale continued.

"Your grandfather built the system."

"Your father tried to destroy it."

"And I stopped him."

Maya's voice shook.

"Why?"

"Because he wanted to give the inheritance to his children."

"And you wanted it."

"No."

Vale's voice became strangely quiet.

"I wanted freedom."

Maya frowned.

"From what?"

"From the system."

Silence.

Vale continued.

"Do you know what happens to the first carrier?"

Maya looked at Noah.

"Tell me."

"The body begins to fail."

Ethan's face changed.

Maya stared at him.

"Is that true?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Vale laughed softly.

"Ask your father."

Maya turned.

"Dad?"

Ethan whispered:

"Yes."

"What happens?"

"The sequence isn't natural."

"Then?"

"Every generation becomes less stable."

"How long do I have?"

Ethan looked at her.

"Maybe ten years."

Maya felt dizzy.

"Ten years?"

"Maybe less."

Luka stepped forward.

"There has to be a cure."

"There is."

Everyone went silent.

Maya looked toward the speaker.

"What?"

"The third carrier."

Maya looked at Noah.

Vale continued:

"Your son."

Maya's blood ran cold.

"He can stabilize you."

"No."

"His blood can repair the sequence."

"You created him for that."

"Yes."

"You made my son so I could survive."

"Exactly."

Maya looked at Noah.

Then Emma.

Her children.

One was the next generation.

The other had been created to save her.

She felt sick.

"What happens to Noah?"

Silence.

Then Vale answered:

"He dies."

Maya's heart shattered.

"No."

"If his genetic material is transferred to you, he won't survive."

"No."

"You can live."

"No."

"Your daughter can inherit the completed sequence."

"No."

"Your family can regain control."

"No."

Maya's voice became stronger.

"I won't sacrifice my son."

Vale laughed.

"You will."

"Why?"

"Because when you're dying, everyone chooses survival."

Maya looked at Luka.

He shook his head.

"Not us."

Vale replied:

"That's what your father said."

A gunshot echoed.

Ethan staggered.

Blood spread across his chest.

"Dad!"

Maya rushed toward him.

Luka caught him.

"He's been hit."

Ethan grabbed Maya's wrist.

"Listen."

She knelt beside him.

"You need to know something."

"What?"

"The birth certificate."

Maya frowned.

"What about it?"

Ethan looked at Luka.

"You signed the wrong name."

Luka stared.

"What?"

Ethan's breathing became difficult.

"The hospital record."

"The father line."

Maya remembered.

Luka had signed it.

LUKA MORETTI.

Ethan whispered:

"That wasn't just legal protection."

Maya looked at him.

"What was it?"

"It was the activation."

"The trust recognized the father's blood."

Luka's face changed.

"So the certificate activated M-17."

"Yes."

Maya stared.

"Then Luka isn't just Emma's guardian."

Ethan nodded.

"He is her biological father."

Silence.

Maya's heart stopped.

"What?"

Luka looked at her.

His face was as shocked as hers.

Ethan continued:

"Daniel wasn't Emma's father."

"Your husband wasn't Emma's father."

"Luka was."

Maya couldn't speak.

"No."

Luka shook his head.

"That isn't possible."

"It is."

"How?"

"Before you met Daniel."

Maya looked at Luka.

"We never..."

Her voice disappeared.

Ethan whispered:

"You did."

Luka looked horrified.

"She doesn't remember."

Maya stared.

"What happened?"

"Vale erased your memory."

Maya's head spun.

"What are you saying?"

Ethan struggled to breathe.

"You and Luka met six years ago."

Maya looked at Luka.

He stared at her.

"I remember."

Her heart pounded.

"We met at the hospital."

"No."

Luka's eyes filled with tears.

"You were seventeen."

Maya froze.

"You were sixteen."

"I protected you."

"You don't remember."

"But I do."

Luka looked at Emma.

"Because I never forgot."

Maya's mind filled with flashes.

A summer night.

Rain.

A boy standing beneath a streetlight.

A hand holding hers.

A promise.

I'll find you again.

She stumbled backward.

"No."

Luka stepped toward her.

"Maya."

"Don't."

"I didn't know."

"You knew me."

"Yes."

"You knew Emma was yours."

"I suspected."

"You signed the certificate."

"Because I knew."

Maya stared at him.

Her entire reality had changed again.

The stranger at the hospital wasn't a stranger.

The brother she had just discovered wasn't simply her brother.

He was also the biological father of her daughter.

And the man who had signed the birth certificate had unknowingly—or perhaps knowingly—activated the most dangerous inheritance in the world.

Maya looked down at Emma.

The baby opened her eyes.

Then the symbol appeared again.

A tiny circle.

Divided into three.

Maya's blood ran cold.

Behind her, Noah began crying.

And every screen in the facility suddenly displayed one final message:

FATHER CONFIRMED.

MOTHER CONFIRMED.

SUCCESSION COMPLETE.

Then a second line appeared.

M-17 FAMILY UNIT RESTORED.

Maya looked at Luka.

Luka looked at her.

Neither of them spoke.

Because somewhere beneath the horror was an even worse realization.

The system had not merely been waiting for Maya's daughter.

It had been waiting for Maya and Luka to find each other again.

And someone had been manipulating their lives from the moment they were born.

The man who signed the birth certificate had finally been identified.

But the question Maya could no longer escape was far more terrifying:

May you like

Who had written his name there before he ever picked up the pen?

To be continued.
