CHAPTER 13 — The Truth About Baby M-17

CHAPTER 13 — The Truth About Baby M-17
The words remained on the screen.
M-17 FAMILY UNIT RESTORED.
Maya stared at them.
Her daughter was asleep against her chest.
Noah was crying in Luka's arms.
Ethan was bleeding on the floor.
And somewhere beyond the walls, Adrian Vale was waiting.
Maya looked at her father.
"What does that mean?"
Ethan tried to sit upright.
"It means the system has recognized you."
"Recognized me as what?"
"The final carrier."
Maya shook her head.
"No."
She looked at Emma.
"You said Noah was created to stabilize me."
"Yes."
"And Emma?"
Ethan hesitated.
"Emma is the successor."
Maya's stomach tightened.
"Successor to what?"
"Everything."
The word echoed through the room.
Maya looked toward Luka.
He had gone pale.
"Everything?"
Ethan nodded.
"The M-17 trust isn't just money."
"What is it?"
"Control."
Maya frowned.
"Over what?"
"Companies. Properties. Research facilities. Political foundations. Private security organizations."
Ethan swallowed.
"And identities."
Maya looked confused.
"Identities?"
"People whose lives can be erased."
She remembered the missing medical records.
The vanished documents.
The false reports.
The people who had disappeared.
"You built a machine that could rewrite people's lives."
"We built a system that could control information."
"And my daughter inherits it."
"Yes."
Maya shook her head.
"No."
Ethan looked at her.
"What?"
"She inherits nothing."
A loud metallic explosion shook the facility.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Luka pulled Maya behind him.
"They're coming."
Maya looked at Ethan.
"How many?"
"Enough."
"Can we escape?"
"Not through the main entrance."
"Then where?"
Ethan pointed toward the floor.
"There is another passage."
Luka picked up a rifle.
"Where?"
"Behind the old archive."
Maya grabbed Emma's blanket.
"Let's go."
Ethan tried to stand.
Maya caught him.
"You can't walk."
"I can."
"No."
She looked at Luka.
"Help him."
Luka nodded.
Together they moved through the room.
Behind the archive shelves was a narrow opening.
Ethan entered first.
Then Maya.
Luka followed with Noah.
The passage descended underground.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Maya whispered:
"Dad."
"Yes?"
"Tell me the truth."
"I am."
"No more omissions."
Ethan nodded.
"Ask."
"Who created M-17?"
"Your grandfather."
"Why?"
"Because he believed power had become too concentrated."
"So he created the trust."
"Yes."
"Then why did it become a weapon?"
"Because people discovered what it could do."
"Who?"
"Vale's father."
Maya frowned.
"And Adrian inherited it."
"Yes."
"Then why does he want Emma?"
"Because Emma is the first child born after the system was redesigned."
Maya stopped walking.
"What?"
Ethan looked at her.
"The original M-17 required two carriers."
"One Bennett."
"One Moretti."
"Yes."
"But your grandfather changed it."
"To what?"
"A third generation."
"Emma."
"Yes."
Maya stared.
"So she's the first true M-17 child."
Ethan nodded.
"She can control the entire trust."
"And Vale wants her."
"He wants to control her."
"What happens when she grows up?"
"If the system remains active, she will inherit everything."
"Can it be destroyed?"
"Yes."
Maya's eyes narrowed.
"How?"
Ethan looked at Luka.
"Through the father."
Maya looked at Luka.
"Why him?"
"Because the original activation requires a Moretti."
Luka understood.
"That's why the birth certificate mattered."
"Yes."
"And my signature."
"It confirmed the bloodline."
Maya's heart sank.
"So by signing that document, I activated everything."
Ethan shook his head.
"No."
"You said—"
"The system had already activated before you reached the hospital."
Maya stared.
"Then when?"
Ethan answered:
"When Emma was conceived."
Maya closed her eyes.
Everything had been planned.
The marriage.
Her husband's behavior.
The missing medical records.
The surveillance.
The hospital.
Luka's appearance.
Even the birth certificate.
It had all been part of something larger.
But one question remained.
"Why did Daniel marry me?"
Ethan looked away.
"Because Vale ordered him to."
"To monitor me."
"Yes."
"Then why did he leave?"
"Because he fell in love with you."
Maya looked down.
A strange mixture of anger and sadness filled her chest.
"He still betrayed me."
"Yes."
"Then he still deserves consequences."
"Yes."
Maya nodded.
"Good."
They reached the bottom of the passage.
A massive vault door stood before them.
Luka touched the wall.
"This is old."
Ethan nodded.
"Your grandfather built it."
"For M-17?"
"For the truth."
The door opened.
Inside were thousands of files.
Photographs.
Medical records.
Birth certificates.
Contracts.
Every document had a single letter.
M.
Maya walked between the shelves.
Then she saw it.
A black file.
M-17 — SUBJECT: EMMA BENNETT
Her hands trembled.
She opened it.
The first page contained a photograph.
Emma.
Taken two days after birth.
Maya's blood ran cold.
"Someone photographed her."
Ethan nodded.
"Before she was born."
"What?"
"The image came from an ultrasound."
Maya stared.
"How?"
"Your hospital records were being transmitted to Vale's servers."
She turned the page.
A list of observations.
Heart rate: stable.
Genetic sequence: confirmed.
Bennett marker: active.
Moretti marker: active.
Third marker: dormant.
Maya froze.
"Third marker?"
Ethan stepped closer.
"What?"
She pointed.
"This."
Ethan's expression changed.
"That's impossible."
"What?"
"The third marker shouldn't exist."
Luka took the file.
"Unless..."
"Unless what?"
"The child isn't entirely human."
Maya stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Luka shook his head.
"No."
Ethan interrupted.
"Don't jump to conclusions."
"Then explain."
Ethan looked at the page.
"The third marker isn't synthetic."
"Then?"
"It's genetic."
Maya felt a chill.
"Whose?"
Ethan didn't answer.
Maya looked at him.
"Whose?"
He whispered:
"Vale."
The room went silent.
Maya stared at Emma.
"No."
Ethan nodded.
"Emma carries all three bloodlines."
"Mine."
"Moretti."
"And Vale."
"Yes."
Maya's face went pale.
"How?"
"We don't know."
"You're lying."
"I'm not."
"Then how did Vale's DNA get into my daughter?"
Ethan looked at the file.
"Because someone altered the embryo."
Maya froze.
"My embryo?"
"Yes."
"Before implantation."
She remembered the fertility treatments.
The doctors.
The strange consent forms.
The medication.
The missing records.
Her husband had told her everything was routine.
It hadn't been.
"Who did it?"
Ethan answered:
"Daniel."
Maya's heart stopped.
"No."
"Daniel altered the embryo."
"Why?"
"Because he believed it was the only way to protect you."
"Protect me?"
"He believed a child carrying all three sequences could destroy the system."
Maya stared at the file.
"Or control it."
"Yes."
"And he didn't tell me."
"No."
She closed her eyes.
Another secret.
Another person deciding she didn't deserve the truth.
A sound came from behind them.
Clapping.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Everyone turned.
Adrian Vale stood at the end of the corridor.
He wasn't alone.
Six armed men surrounded him.
He smiled.
"Finally."
Maya stepped in front of Emma.
Vale looked at the baby.
"Beautiful."
"Stay away from her."
He laughed.
"You're beginning to sound like your father."
Maya's voice hardened.
"You killed him."
"No."
"I watched him disappear."
"He chose to disappear."
"Why?"
"Because he knew what I was."
Maya stared.
"What are you?"
Vale smiled.
"The original carrier."
Luka stepped forward.
"You said your bloodline was removed."
"It was."
"Then how are you still alive?"
Vale's smile disappeared.
"Because M-17 works."
Maya understood.
"The sequence keeps your body alive."
"Exactly."
"You're not immortal."
"No."
Vale touched his chest.
"I regenerate."
Maya stared.
"That's why you haven't aged."
"Correct."
"Then why do you need Emma?"
"Because the sequence is failing."
He looked toward Noah.
"And your son contains the missing stabilizer."
Maya tightened her grip.
"You want to kill him."
"Initially."
"Initially?"
Vale nodded.
"But then I discovered something."
"What?"
"Your daughter doesn't need him."
Maya frowned.
"Then why?"
"Because Emma has something I never possessed."
"The complete sequence."
Maya's blood ran cold.
Vale continued.
"If I merge with her..."
"No."
"...I become permanent."
Luka raised his weapon.
Vale's men aimed theirs.
Ethan shouted:
"Don't!"
Vale smiled.
"Put the gun down."
Luka didn't.
Vale looked at Maya.
"Your brother will die first."
Maya looked at Luka.
He remained still.
Then he lowered the weapon.
Vale smiled.
"Good."
Maya whispered:
"Why are you doing this?"
Vale looked at her.
"Because your family created a system designed to control the world."
"And you want it."
"No."
His voice became cold.
"I want to destroy it."
Maya stared.
"What?"
Vale stepped closer.
"You think I'm the villain."
"You've hunted my family."
"Yes."
"You killed people."
"Yes."
"You manipulated Daniel."
"Yes."
"You created Noah."
"Yes."
"Then why?"
Vale looked at Emma.
"Because I know what happens when M-17 survives."
Maya frowned.
"What?"
"Eventually, someone will use it."
"And?"
"They will become worse than me."
Maya shook her head.
"So your solution is to take my daughter?"
"No."
He looked directly at her.
"My solution is to make her the last carrier."
Maya didn't understand.
"Last?"
"Yes."
"If Emma dies?"
"No."
Vale smiled.
"If Emma destroys the system."
Silence.
Maya stared.
"She can destroy M-17?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"She needs all three bloodlines."
Maya looked at Emma.
"She has them."
"Exactly."
Vale turned toward Luka.
"And she needs the father."
Luka understood.
"The birth certificate."
Vale nodded.
"That document wasn't proof of fatherhood."
"It was a key."
"Yes."
Maya suddenly understood.
The entire hospital scene.
The pen.
The signature.
The line marked FATHER.
It had been designed to trigger the final stage.
But then she remembered something.
Luka had signed before anyone told him about the system.
"Who told you to sign?"
Luka looked at her.
"Daniel."
Maya stared.
Daniel had known.
He had known exactly what the signature would do.
Vale smiled.
"Now you understand."
Maya's eyes hardened.
"Daniel wasn't protecting me."
Vale shook his head.
"He was trying to destroy M-17."
Maya looked at Emma.
"By using my daughter."
"Yes."
"Then Daniel wasn't the enemy."
"Not entirely."
Maya felt sick.
She had spent months believing Daniel had abandoned her.
But perhaps his betrayal had been an attempt to prevent something even worse.
Still, he had used her.
He had used their daughter.
And he had used Luka.
She looked at Vale.
"What happens if I refuse?"
"Then M-17 remains."
"And you?"
"I die."
Maya stared.
"You're asking me to save the world by sacrificing your life?"
Vale smiled.
"No."
"I'm asking you to save it by sacrificing the system."
"Without killing Emma."
Maya didn't trust him.
"Why should I believe you?"
"You shouldn't."
That answer surprised her.
Vale looked toward the vault.
"That's why your father left you one final file."
Ethan's eyes widened.
"No."
Vale smiled.
"Yes."
Maya turned toward Ethan.
"What file?"
Ethan whispered:
"The one I prayed you'd never find."
She walked toward him.
"Where?"
Ethan pointed toward the far wall.
"There."
Maya found a hidden compartment.
Inside was a single envelope.
Her father's handwriting covered the front.
FOR MAYA — OPEN ONLY WHEN EMMA IS BORN.
Her hands trembled.
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Her father.
Her mother.
Maya.
Luka.
And Emma.
But the photograph had been taken twenty-five years before Emma was born.
Maya stared.
Impossible.
Then she turned it over.
Her father's handwriting contained six words.
I HAVE SEEN HER FUTURE.
Below that:
AND IT ENDS WITH YOU.
Maya's breath caught.
Vale watched silently.
Luka stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
Maya looked at him.
Then at Emma.
And finally at her father.
She realized the greatest secret had never been about money.
It had never been about the trust.
It had never even been about M-17.
Her father had known Emma would be born.
He had known Maya would become her mother.
He had known Luka would sign the birth certificate.
And somehow, twenty-five years before Emma entered the world, he had already seen the moment when everything would end.
Maya folded the letter.
"How did my father know?"
Vale answered from behind her.
"Because he wasn't predicting the future."
Maya turned.
Vale's expression had changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
"He remembered it."
Maya stared.
"What?"
Vale whispered:
"Your father had already lived this night once."
The lights went out.
Emma began to cry.
And somewhere in the darkness, another voice whispered:
"Run, Maya."
Her father's voice.
Dead for twenty-five years.
May you like
Still alive somewhere inside the walls.
To be continued.
