CHAPTER 3 — The Husband Who Walked Away

CHAPTER 3 — The Husband Who Walked Away
Daniel Bennett had always known how to leave a room without looking like a man who was running away.
He did it at the hospital.
He did it when Maya cried.
He did it when his daughter was born.
And three days later, he did it again when he walked into his attorney's office and asked one question.
"How do I make sure Maya gets nothing?"
His attorney slowly lowered the document in his hands.
"Nothing?"
"Nothing."
"She's your wife."
"Not anymore."
"And the baby?"
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Especially the baby."
The attorney studied him.
"You realize abandoning your wife immediately after childbirth is going to look terrible."
Daniel leaned back.
"I don't care how it looks."
"Then what do you care about?"
Daniel looked toward the window.
"I care about what happens if that child survives."
The attorney frowned.
"Survives?"
Daniel immediately corrected himself.
"Forget I said that."
But the attorney had already noticed.
There was something Daniel wasn't saying.
And Daniel knew it.
Three days earlier, Daniel had walked away from his wife.
He had told himself it was because Maya was emotional.
He had told himself she had become unstable.
He had told himself the baby wasn't his responsibility.
He had told himself a hundred lies.
But there was one truth he couldn't escape.
He had been paid to leave.
The money had arrived two weeks before Maya's delivery.
Five million dollars.
No sender.
No explanation.
Only one instruction:
Walk away when the child is born.
Daniel had accepted.
He had never intended to stay with Maya.
Not after discovering what her father had hidden.
Not after learning about M-17.
And certainly not after learning that the child might carry a genetic marker worth more than his entire company.
He had thought money would solve everything.
Then Luka Moretti appeared.
That wasn't part of the plan.
Daniel sat in his car outside the attorney's office.
His phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Yes?"
A woman's voice spoke.
"Where is Maya?"
Daniel froze.
"I don't know."
"You were supposed to know."
"I left her at the hospital."
"She didn't stay there."
His grip tightened around the steering wheel.
"What?"
"She's gone."
"With who?"
Silence.
Then:
"Luka."
Daniel's face went pale.
"No."
"You recognize the name."
"Moretti."
"Yes."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Luka Moretti was the one man Daniel had been warned about.
The one person who could destroy everything.
"How did he find her?"
"He was waiting."
"Waiting for what?"
"The baby."
Daniel's heart began pounding.
"Does he know about M-17?"
The woman didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Daniel understood.
He had failed.
That night, Daniel returned to the apartment he shared with Maya.
The place felt strangely empty.
Her shoes were still beside the door.
Her coffee mug remained on the kitchen counter.
A pregnancy book lay open beside the sofa.
There were photographs everywhere.
Their wedding.
Their first vacation.
The day Maya told him she was pregnant.
Daniel stared at one photograph for a long time.
Maya was smiling.
He remembered that day.
She had run toward him carrying the pregnancy test.
"I think we're going to have a baby."
He had hugged her.
He had kissed her.
He had promised her everything.
Now he wondered whether he had ever meant any of it.
Then he saw something on the floor.
A photograph.
He picked it up.
It showed Maya as a child.
Beside her stood her father.
And behind them was another woman.
Daniel stared.
He knew her.
His heart stopped.
Maya's mother.
The woman everyone believed had died fifteen years ago.
Daniel turned the photograph over.
There was writing on the back.
M-17 — FAMILY LINE CONFIRMED.
His hands began to shake.
He hadn't known Maya had this.
Someone had deliberately left it behind.
A warning.
Or a trap.
His phone rang.
"Maya."
He stared at the screen.
Her number.
He answered immediately.
"Maya?"
Nothing.
Then her voice.
"Why did you leave me?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because there were a thousand answers.
None of them would save him.
"I was scared."
"Of what?"
"The baby."
Silence.
"Why?"
Daniel couldn't tell her.
If he told Maya about M-17, they would kill her.
If he lied, Luka would find out.
So he said the only thing he could.
"Because I don't believe she's mine."
Maya inhaled sharply.
Daniel hated himself for saying it.
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
"Then why did you spend nine months pretending?"
"Because I was trying to find out the truth."
"What truth?"
He heard another voice in the background.
Luka.
"Hang up."
Daniel's blood froze.
"Maya?"
The line went dead.
Daniel stared at his phone.
Then another message arrived.
You should have stayed away from her.
Daniel typed:
Who are you?
The response came instantly.
The person who owns your debt.
Daniel drove directly to the old warehouse.
It belonged to a company he had never heard of.
But he had been there before.
Three months earlier.
That's where he had met the woman who paid him.
She was waiting inside.
Black coat.
Gloves.
No jewelry.
Daniel entered.
"Where is Maya?"
The woman didn't look at him.
"You failed."
"I didn't know Luka would find her."
"You knew the risks."
"I need more time."
"You've already had nine months."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Tell me who she is."
The woman turned.
"Who?"
"Maya."
The woman smiled.
"You married her."
"That's not an answer."
"She is the daughter of a man who discovered something he should never have discovered."
"What?"
"The truth about M-17."
Daniel's face tightened.
"And the baby?"
The woman paused.
"That's why you were told to leave."
"Why?"
"Because if the baby is tested, everything becomes public."
Daniel swallowed.
"What's in her blood?"
The woman stared at him.
"Something your family has spent generations trying to obtain."
Daniel felt sick.
"My family?"
She nodded.
"You didn't know?"
"No."
The woman smiled.
"Then you understand even less than we thought."
Daniel returned home at dawn.
He couldn't sleep.
He couldn't think.
He couldn't stop seeing Maya's face.
The hospital.
Her arms around their daughter.
The way she had looked at him when he walked away.
He had told himself he was protecting himself.
Now he wondered whether he had simply become the monster everyone wanted him to be.
Then he remembered something.
Maya had asked him months earlier:
"Why are you always asking about my father's records?"
He had laughed.
He had kissed her forehead.
"Because I love you."
She had believed him.
Daniel sat on the edge of the bed.
For the first time, guilt overwhelmed him.
Then his phone rang.
It was Madison.
His mistress.
"Daniel?"
"What?"
"We need to talk."
"About what?"
"I found something."
"What?"
"Your wife."
He sat upright.
"What about her?"
Madison's voice trembled.
"She isn't who you think she is."
Daniel stared into the darkness.
"What did you find?"
"I found a file."
"M-17?"
"No."
"What then?"
Madison whispered:
"Your name."
Daniel drove to meet her.
Madison was waiting inside a hotel room.
She looked terrified.
"What happened?"
She handed him a folder.
"I stole this from your office."
Daniel opened it.
Inside were financial records.
Payments.
Transfers.
And one document.
His own signature.
Daniel frowned.
"I didn't sign this."
Madison shook her head.
"That's what scared me."
He turned the page.
The document transferred ownership of his company.
To Maya.
Daniel stared.
"Why would someone do this?"
Madison whispered:
"Because your company isn't really yours."
Daniel looked up.
"What?"
"Your father established it using a trust."
"What does that have to do with Maya?"
Madison's face went pale.
"The trust has a beneficiary."
"Who?"
She slid the final page across the table.
Daniel read the name.
His blood turned cold.
Maya Bennett.
He stood.
"No."
Madison stepped backward.
"That's why they wanted you to marry her."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"They didn't want you to love her."
She swallowed.
"They wanted you to control her."
Daniel stared at the document.
His entire marriage had been engineered.
The apartment.
The wedding.
The business.
Even the money.
Everything.
Then he remembered the day he first met Maya.
Had it really been coincidence?
Or had someone placed her in his path?
Daniel suddenly understood something else.
Luka hadn't appeared at the hospital because of Emma.
He had appeared because of Maya.
And if Luka knew the truth about her family, then he knew Daniel's family too.
Daniel grabbed his phone.
He called the unknown number.
"Where is Maya?"
No answer.
"Tell me where she is."
Still silence.
Daniel slammed his hand against the table.
"I'll give you whatever you want."
The voice finally came.
"You already did."
"What?"
"Your wife."
Daniel froze.
"You handed her to us the moment you walked away."
The call ended.
Daniel stood completely still.
For the first time, he understood the true meaning of the hospital.
It hadn't been a divorce.
It hadn't been an abandonment.
It had been a transaction.
And he had been the one who signed it.
Across the city, Maya sat beside Emma.
Luka stood near the window.
He was reading a message on his phone.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Maya asked.
He looked at her.
"Daniel knows."
"Knows what?"
"That your marriage was arranged."
Maya's heart stopped.
"What?"
Luka walked toward her.
"Your father investigated Daniel's family before you met him."
"Why?"
"Because they wanted access to something only your bloodline could unlock."
Maya looked at Emma.
"What?"
Luka hesitated.
Then he said:
"Your daughter."
Maya tightened her arms around the baby.
"No."
Luka crouched beside her.
"Listen to me."
"She's just a baby."
"I know."
"She's not some experiment."
"I know."
"Then why are they hunting her?"
Luka looked at Emma.
"Because M-17 isn't about what she is."
Maya stared.
"Then what is it about?"
Luka's voice dropped.
"It's about what she can prove."
That same night, Daniel received another message.
A photograph.
Maya.
Holding Emma.
Luka standing beside them.
Underneath:
You have twenty-four hours.
Then another message appeared.
Bring us the baby.
Daniel stared at the screen.
For years, he had chosen money over loyalty.
Fear over courage.
Self-preservation over love.
But now he had one decision left.
He could continue running.
Or he could finally become the man he had once promised Maya he would be.
He deleted the message.
Then opened his car door.
His destination wasn't the people who had paid him.
It wasn't his attorney.
It wasn't Madison.
It was Luka.
Daniel was going to find the man who had signed his daughter's birth certificate.
And for the first time, he wasn't going to ask for forgiveness.
He was going to warn him.
Because Daniel had finally discovered the one secret that terrified the people behind M-17.
Maya wasn't their target.
Emma wasn't their target.
Daniel himself was.

And somewhere in the city, the woman who had ordered him to abandon his wife was preparing to make sure he never had the chance to tell them why.
To be continued.
