CHAPTER 2 — The File Marked M-17

CHAPTER 2 — The File Marked M-17

The file was locked inside a steel case.

Not a safe.

Not a briefcase.

A case designed to survive fire.

Luka placed it on the kitchen table and stared at me.

"Before I open this, you need to understand something."

I held Emma closer.

"What?"

"After this, you won't be able to pretend your old life was real."

I swallowed.

"I already know my husband left me in a hospital with our newborn."

"That's only the surface."

Luka inserted a small key.

The lock clicked.

Then another.

Then a third.

The lid opened.

Inside was a thick black folder.

Across the front were three characters:

M-17.

My stomach tightened.

Luka didn't touch it immediately.

He looked at me.

"Your father spent six years trying to find this."

"Why?"

"Because he believed someone was using medical research to manipulate families, identities, and inheritance."

I frowned.

"That sounds impossible."

"So did your disappearance from the hospital database."

He opened the folder.

The first page was a photograph.

A baby.

Newborn.

Wrapped in a white blanket.

Underneath:

SUBJECT M-17

I stared at it.

"Who is that?"

Luka turned the page.

My blood ran cold.

It was Emma.

The photograph had been taken hours after her birth.

"That's impossible."

Luka's voice was quiet.

"This photograph was taken before you ever saw your daughter."

I looked at him.

"Who took it?"

"We don't know."

I grabbed the file.

There were dozens of pages.

Medical reports.

Genetic charts.

Hospital signatures.

Payment records.

And one document with Daniel's name.

My hands began to shake.

"What is my husband doing in this?"

Luka pointed to the signature.

"He wasn't just selling information."

He turned the page.

"He was working for them."

The first report was dated three years earlier.

Before I had become pregnant.

Before Daniel had started acting strangely.

Before I knew anything about M-17.

The report contained a list of names.

Some were crossed out.

Others were marked with numbers.

One name was circled.

MAYA BENNETT.

I stared.

"Why am I here?"

Luka didn't answer.

I looked at the next page.

It contained a medical history.

Mine.

Every illness I'd ever had.

Every vaccination.

Every blood test.

Every hospital visit.

Every pregnancy appointment.

Someone had been tracking me for years.

"How?"

"Your records were copied."

"By whom?"

"Someone with access."

I looked at Luka.

"Daniel?"

"Possibly."

"Possibly?"

"There are others."

"Who?"

He pointed to the bottom of the page.

A hospital administrator's name.

Then a private laboratory.

Then a pharmaceutical company.

Then a bank account.

I stared at the web of connections.

This wasn't one person.

It was an organization.

A network.

And somehow, I was at the center of it.

Emma began crying.

I immediately closed the file.

Luka stood.

"She's hungry."

"I know."

I picked up the bottle.

My hands were still shaking.

Luka turned away.

That small gesture surprised me.

He wasn't staring.

He wasn't interfering.

He simply gave me privacy.

I fed Emma quietly.

When she finished, she fell asleep against my chest.

I looked down at her tiny face.

"She looks like me."

Luka nodded.

"She does."

"Does she look like Daniel?"

He hesitated.

"Not much."

I looked up.

"What does that mean?"

"Nothing."

"Luka."

He sighed.

"I don't know who the biological father is."

The room became silent.

I stared at him.

"You signed the birth certificate."

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because the biological father abandoned her."

"You can't just decide you're her father."

"No."

His voice was calm.

"But I can protect her."

"That's not the same thing."

"I know."

He looked at Emma.

"That's why I didn't lie."

I frowned.

"What?"

"The document contains a legal declaration."

He turned it toward me.

There was another page beneath the certificate.

A temporary guardianship agreement.

My father's name appeared at the bottom.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

My father had appointed Luka as guardian of my future child.

If I ever became incapacitated.

If I disappeared.

If the child's biological father abandoned us.

My hands went numb.

"When did he write this?"

"Six years ago."

"Before I even met Daniel."

"Yes."

"Why would he do that?"

Luka looked at me.

"Because your father knew Daniel."

I stopped breathing.

"What?"

"Your father investigated him."

I stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.

"That's impossible."

Luka didn't move.

"My father never mentioned Daniel."

"He wouldn't."

"Why?"

"Because Daniel didn't know your father was investigating him."

I stared at the file.

"Then why did my father let me marry him?"

"He tried to stop you."

I shook my head.

"No."

"He sent you a letter."

"I never received one."

"Exactly."

My heart began pounding.

"What happened to it?"

Luka looked toward the window.

"Daniel intercepted it."

I felt sick.

"How do you know?"

"Because I found the copy."

He removed another document.

It was a letter.

My father's handwriting.

I read the first line.

Maya, if you are reading this, something has gone wrong.

My eyes filled with tears.

I continued.

I don't trust Daniel.

I covered my mouth.

The room blurred.

My father had known.

He had tried to warn me.

And someone had stopped me from hearing him.

Luka turned another page.

A photograph appeared.

Daniel.

Standing beside a man I didn't recognize.

Behind them was a sign:

MORETTI BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH CENTER.

I looked at Luka.

"That's your company."

"Formerly."

"Was Daniel working for you?"

"No."

"Then why was he there?"

"Because he was trying to buy something."

"What?"

Luka pointed to a document.

A genetic sequence.

M-17.

I stared at it.

"What is it?"

"A genetic marker."

"Why is it important?"

"Because the person carrying it can authenticate a biological lineage."

I didn't understand.

Luka explained.

"Certain wealthy families use trusts that cannot be transferred without biological verification."

"So?"

"So someone carrying M-17 could prove a blood connection to one of those families."

My mind raced.

"Which family?"

Luka's expression hardened.

"The Morettis."

I stared at him.

"Your family?"

"Yes."

"Why would my daughter have a Moretti marker?"

"I don't know."

"Then maybe the test is wrong."

Luka shook his head.

"Your father wasn't wrong often."

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying Emma may have a biological connection to my family."

I looked at my daughter.

"No."

Luka didn't argue.

He simply looked at the file.

"That's why they want her."

A noise came from outside.

Luka immediately closed the folder.

"What was that?"

He stood.

I held Emma tightly.

"Someone's outside."

He walked toward the window.

The lights were off.

The lake was black beneath the moon.

Then headlights appeared.

A vehicle stopped at the end of the driveway.

Luka's entire body changed.

"Stay here."

"Who is it?"

"I don't know."

He pulled his phone from his pocket.

Then another vehicle appeared.

Then another.

My heart began pounding.

"They found us."

"Who?"

Luka looked at me.

"The people behind M-17."

The front door shook.

Once.

Twice.

Then the lock cracked.

Luka moved quickly.

He grabbed a weapon from beneath the table.

I froze.

"Where did you get that?"

"Not important."

The door burst open.

Two men entered.

Then a third.

Luka stepped between them and me.

"Don't move."

One of the men laughed.

"Moretti."

Luka stared.

"Who sent you?"

The man smiled.

"You know who."

Luka's expression became terrifyingly calm.

"Tell him I'm not giving her up."

The man looked past him.

His eyes landed on Emma.

"That's not your decision."

Luka moved.

The fight lasted less than a minute.

Furniture overturned.

Glass shattered.

One man crashed against the wall.

Another ran.

The third escaped through the back door.

Luka stood breathing heavily.

I stared at him.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Who were they?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he walked to the table.

The M-17 file was gone.

I stared.

"What?"

Luka's face went pale.

"They took the file."

"But you had it."

"Not anymore."

He looked toward the broken door.

"That means they already know we found it."

Hours later, we moved again.

A different safe house.

A different car.

No phones.

No computers.

No lights.

Emma slept beside me.

Luka sat across the room.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, I asked:

"Tell me the truth."

He looked up.

"Everything."

"I can't."

"You signed my daughter's birth certificate."

"Yes."

"You knew my father."

"Yes."

"You knew about Daniel."

"Yes."

"You knew someone was watching me."

"Yes."

"And you knew my daughter was important."

"Yes."

I stood.

"Then what else are you hiding?"

Luka stared at the floor.

Then he said:

"Your father wasn't the only person who knew about M-17."

"Who else?"

He looked at me.

"Your mother."

I froze.

"My mother died when I was ten."

"I know."

"Then how?"

"Because she didn't die."

The room went silent.

I couldn't breathe.

"What did you say?"

Luka opened the final page of the file.

There was a photograph.

An older woman standing outside a laboratory.

I recognized her immediately.

My mother.

Alive.

And standing beside her was Daniel.

I took a step backward.

"No."

Luka's voice was barely audible.

"Your mother has been alive for fifteen years."

I stared at the photograph.

The world seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

My father had disappeared.

My mother was supposedly dead.

My husband had betrayed me.

My daughter had become the target of a secret organization.

And the man who had signed her birth certificate knew all of it.

I looked at Luka.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

He didn't answer.

"Why?"

"Because I was trying to protect you."

"From my mother?"

"From what she became."

I looked down at Emma.

Then back at him.

"What did she become?"

Luka's expression hardened.

"The woman who created M-17."

The next morning, we received an envelope.

No name.

No address.

Inside was one photograph.

My mother.

Standing beside Daniel.

Holding a newborn baby.

My baby.

On the back, someone had written:

YOU'RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION, MAYA.

Then another line:

LUKA IS NOT YOUR PROTECTOR.

I looked at Luka.

He read the message.

For the first time since I met him, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

"What does it mean?"

He looked at me.

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

He was silent.

I stepped closer.

"Who is the father of my daughter?"

Luka's jaw tightened.

Then he finally answered.

"That's the question they never wanted you to ask."

My heart stopped.

"Why?"

"Because the answer could destroy the Moretti family."

He looked at Emma.

"And it could put you in more danger than ever."

Outside, a black car slowly passed the house.

Luka watched it disappear.

Then he turned back to me.

"We have to find your mother."

I nodded.

But neither of us noticed the tiny red light blinking inside the room.

Someone was already listening.

And somewhere across the city, Daniel received a message containing only six words:

May you like

She knows about her mother. Move now.

To be continued.
